Repair Windows XP option not to come
Someone at work has an older Dell laptop which has XP installed on it. Windows is damaged to the point that it reaches not even in save mode. They generally get an error message that system.all or just system in the system32\config directory is missing. There are data in the system that has not been saved, no automatic recovery disks have been created. Usually I suggest start of XP to INSTALL XP installation cd, then select press R for repair which restores the windows system and allows generally to existing data. However, in this case I tells me that this option doesn't show up and it doesn't seem to detect that XP is present. Any suggestions on how to fix their system without losing their existing files?

Hi there all your PC gurus
PC fails to complete a repair of Windows XP installation. It does not go beyond the mark of 26 min during the installation phase ends. You can still move the mouse around, however installation is not continue beyond this point.
The 2 following errors are received:
Error installing com +.

The file or the directory c:/documents and settings by default/user/start menu/programs/windows Media.lnk is damaged and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility. »PC is a Dell Vostro 1510, it is only a couple of years.
Can someone please?
The initial problem was that the PC did not go beyond the page of Windows to start upward. So I had to do an installation of the Dell windows XP disk repair. But I couldn't boot from the CD, (even after changing in the system BIOS boot order) to work around this problem, so I had to disable the boot on the other upward options being - HDD, USB etc. so only if it start from the disc.
After completing the first part of the repair facility, the PC restarted to complete the second part of the installation, however I got an error message "the Kernel32.dll file is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the checksum calculated.
After some research, I solved this problem by using the windows recovery console to extract a new copy of the kernel32.dll from the windows XP disc. It seemed to work. The second part of the window repair facility restarted successfully, but now the problem is it will not complete installation, it gets stuck/not will not go beyond the 26 minute mark during the phase of "complete installation."
It has been full of hiccups. I'm not a person of computer tech at all, but have managed to get so far at this stage. Can someone please please help, very much appreciated.
Thanks :)Hello

So normally every month, I format my computer of State out-of-box just to clean my system. When I reformatted it this time, I tried to download steam and it showed an error (written below). I searched for a very long time and no solution to this problem. (whenever I try to download all of the .msi as the steam files an eror comes up saying the following :))
Windows install:
This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.
would really appreciate a solution to this.
Here is a thread with a few options on how to repair Windows Installer: http://www.vistax64.com/vista-installation-setup/96680-repair-windows-installer-service-vista-all-versions.html.
If this does not work, try the Windows Install Cleanup http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Windows-Installer-CleanUp-Utility-Download-18442.html and see if that helps.
If not, reinstall, or install the latest Windows Installer: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en.

Try the following solutions:
To access the system recovery environment in Windows 7, simply start your PC, just before the system loads the Windows operating system. Press the [F8] key function 8 on your keyboard which will launch the menu Advanced Boot Options. You will see a new option "Repair your computer", select this option and press 'Enter' on your keyboard.
If the problem persists, try to start safe mode, start your PC, just before the system loads the Windows operating system. Press the [F8] key function 8 on your keyboard which will launch the menu Advanced Boot Options. Select Safe Mode.
In Safe Mode, try the following:
Check your hard drive for errors:
Click Start
Type: CMD, according to the results, right-click CMD
Click on "Run as Administrator"
At the command prompt, type: chkdsk /f /r
When you restart your system, your computer will be scanned for errors and will try to correct them. Also:
Click Start
Type: CMD, according to the results, right-click CMD
Click on "Run as Administrator"
At the command prompt, type: sfc/scannowThis will check for any breach of integrity
Restart your system
See if Windows starts correctly, when you click on the start menu.
You should also try to check your computer for any malicious code on it.

I have an Inspiron 1520 running Windows vista. I'm doing a restore of the entire system, instructions on the Dells Web site that press "F8" at startup. It is no problem, Advanced Start menu opens, and then its saying to select "Repair computer". That's the question, 'repair your computer' is not where to find them. I tried several times to contact Dell about this issue. They tell me when I chat online to call, when I call they want to charge me for technical support because my laptop is out of warranty. Please help, I need to have my laptop works properly again for work or school.

Windows Vista does not start or repair
I get a black screen, can't get into safe mode but can get bios. Haven't tried to do a repair with the DVD of Vista, but when asked to choose an operating system to repair there is no choice. So I can't fix or recover. Why is this? What should I do? Vista is running on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. Had no problems with it over the past two years. I'm new doing a restore or a repair, but it seems that I have do everything correctly so far. Can't understand why I can't choose an operating system to repair.
Hello
No saving necessary data and re-installing Windows Vista might be the best option, but here
are a few others. You can save your files by putting the drive in another computer as a 2nd disk (best) or external
Drive USB enclosure and then backup to removable media such as CD, DVD or other USB drives.
Of course a real store of the computer or the manufacturer of your system can help to recover the files.Or you can use a boot Ubuntu CD to back up data.

You can access Mode safe? Repeatedly press F8 as you start? If yes you can try Control Panel - device
Manager - graphics card - Double click on - driver tab - click on UPDATE driver - then right click
on devices and UNINSTALL - REBOOT.A method to try to get to the desktop (try in normal Windows Mode without failure) is CTRL +.
ALT + DELETE - Manager tasks and tab process EXPLORER.exe and COMPLETE the PROCESS on this subject - and then
on the Applications tab - lower right - new task - type in EXPLORER.exe. Safe mode is available by
repeatedly tapping F8 as you start. CTRL + SHIFT + ESC also begins the Task Manager.First check this thread in case it is simple and if not to come back to this thread.
Black screen problems are extremely difficult to repair and all patch is usually on a base hit or miss.

automatic repair of Windows 8 could not repair your pc
I recently bought a new 3 TB hard drive for my computer to add to my system. I installed without a problem and has used the software that came with the drive. For reference, I added a Seagate SATA drive 3TO. I cloned my original 2 TB drive on my new drive because I want to use it as my main drive for windows. No problems showed up after it was complete. My records all use MBR and I have very little experience in creating the partitions. I have partitioned my drive and was designed to use the extra space after the 2 TB limit has been reached.
In all cases after a few days I decided to perform a new installation of windows and my recovery disk that put back me in windows 7. My recovery partition is set for windows 7 and I started the migration to windows 8. After completing the installation of Windows 8-re, I ran the seagate software to allow me to use the extra space on my HARD drive but after restarting my computer finds the option of automatic startup and recovery States that he is unable to fix the pc.
I tried a few different options to no effect but my attempt to enter a system restore point, I noticed the Seagate Software did a restore point so I started this earlier period.
It is a new installation of Windows 8. I have not yet loaded Windows 8.1 as all I have is the DVD of Windows 8 and Windows 7 recovery partition. I decided to try another new facility once again with the same result. I have a 3 TB drive, which has been cloned my original 2 TB disk. My 2 TB drive is wiped with 1 single partition and my new 3 TB drive has a system partition, the OS partition and a recovery partition. In addition, I now have a portion that is not attributed, that I'm unable to access and if I activate Windows finds an inevitable auto repair with no option but to remove the Seagate Software. My question is this, can I use this 3 TB drive as my main drive and be allowed access to all the data or I'll need to come back to used my original drive as the OS drive. I would avoid using my original drive because my new drive is faster.
This issue has been resolved itself, I have reformatted all my readers and did install a clean Windows 8. After reading on the 2 TB limit I found that changing a few settings in my BIOS allows me to use the full 3 TB in Windows 8. I tried to save the Windows 7 recovery partition which has been installed by HP, but thought to remove the partition would be the best option. After formatting the drive, everything works as expected but Windows did install 2 partitions, that I don't already know, it's a recovery of 300 MB partition and a 100 MB EFI system partition. I hope this helps someone else who may have this problem as well.

Highlight BasicEditField instead of wrap
When you type in a BasicEditField, if the entry goes beyond its width she will wrap text to the next line. Is it possible to get it to scroll the text of entry overflowing off to the left instead? TIA.
