RESOLVED - unable to enable IPv6 in Windows 7, so unable to connect to the homegroup - ZoneAlarm was the problem

My problem is that I can't turn on IPv6 in Windows 7.

My goal was to set up a homegroup three computers so that I can share a printer that is connected to one of them. They are all running different versions of Windows 7.  A desktop computer has created a homegroup, and a second desktop computer connected successfully to the homegroup and can print using the first computer printer.

The third computer is a portable computer. When you go to the homegroup settings page, it says that the homegroup is available. But this computer is unable to join when you click on the "join" button. The convenience store said IPv6 must be enabled.

Option is checked in the IPv6 network card settings. (The install button is also active and uninstall is dimmed. I don't understand why this should be as I have read that you cannot uninstall IPv6, if it makes sense for the uninstallation to be grey, why install would be an option? Confusion between.)

Here is what seems to be the root of the problem. In the registry settings, in the section IPv6 DisabledComponents is set to 255 (disabled). I change it to 0 (all features enabled), but I can't always connect to the homegroup. I restart the computer and the value 0 is changed back to 255.

I can't activate IPv6, it isn't surprising that the computer cannot join the homegroup as I read that this function requires IPv6.

Can any expert from Microsoft give me some advice on how to operate the homegroup?

Thank you very much.

I have now found the answer to my problem. This is a setting in the free ZoneAlarm firewall. I will describe the solution in the case of meeting other people that.

I have the default setting of the version of ZoneAlarm is that it disables IPv6 when it starts. (I don't know if it's the same for all versions).

Although I tried disabling ZoneAlarm (and my separate anti-virus) so he was trying to set up group residential, just turn it off has no impact on registry settings - DisabledComponents is always set at 255 until you change to 0 and, critically, restart the machine. Then, the parameter 0 (enabled) will come into force. Or so it seems to me as a layman.

But if you did not disable the automatic startup of ZoneAlarm (like me) then as soon as you restart the computer, ZoneAlarm starts too and resets the 255, new registry entry to disable IPv6. If you can't join a homegroup.

The solution is to open ZoneAlarm and choose firewall, hand and advanced. Then you will see the option to activate IPv6 networks. When I didn't do the notebook had no problem joined the homegroup.

I don't know why I have the same problem on the second desktop computer. Maybe it's runnning a later version of ZoneAlarm to allow IPv6 - I haven't checked.

In any case, I spent hours looking for this solution, so I hope that the description above helps someone else that has a parameter of the problem until a homegroup because of what seems ZoneAlarm made IPv6 settings in the registry.

    Hi there @ElliottO

Welcome to the Forums of HP Support!

I understand that you get an error message when you try to connect to the Windows store. You have problems with other Web pages having the same error, or are you able to navigate normally?

With a bit of checking, it seems that it's an unusual problem, but there are several causes. Here are a few pages of various related forums that can help:

  • Pavilion 140 550 - t: unable to connect to the windows service

Not sure if it's the good advice of post, but here goes.

Just got the HP computer yesterday and installed Norton Security, Malwarebytes, and Windows Live Mail (do not like the version of Mail). Now, when I start it, I get "Unable to connect to the Windows Service" pop up and WLM crashes when I try to open it. What the DEVIL?

Had the same problem on the one I just replaced. My laptop became the 'Group Policy' error thing, but I think I fixed it.

Any suggestions? Windows is a joke!

If it is Norton Security, then it's a firewall as well and firewalls blocking things, it's that they are supposed to do. So demand for three, you said that this is probably the cause.

But if you do not want to test it, then try the system restore I've mentioned or reload the image origin, then just put in place the email again and see if it works without the other two installed, first to see if it will work with anything else in the picture.

    Hello

1 have had any changes made on the computer before the show?

    2. do you get an error message? If Yes, what is the full and exact error message?

    Method 1:

See the article and check if that helps:

    To establish an Internet connection

    http://www.Microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/proddocs/en-us/howto_i_client.mspx?mfr=true

    Method 2:

Try to run Microsoft Safety Scanner for any malware or spyware infection and check if it helps.

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: the Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again. The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.

    Hello

Temporarily disable the security software on both computers and check if it makes a difference.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/disable-antivirus-software

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats.  In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Know what type of network card you have and download the drivers of its supplier.

It doesn't matter what it is always a good idea before re-install/upgrade to log on to the computer support page, download independent drivers from there and put them on a flash drive.

    Hi Kenneth,

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community forums.

I'm sorry to know that you are unable to connect to the Internet. Let me try and help you with the issue that you are facing.

    1. What is the brand and model of the PC?

    2. do you let us know the exact error message that you receive? This is important in order to solve the issue accordingly.

    3. are you connected wired or wireless network?

Internet connection issues are more often caused by cables disconnected or routers and modems that do not work correctly.
