  My Satellite 2430 has had a strange DVD problem and may not know what is all about. All started when I tried to make a full recovery. The unit was not able to boot from the DVD. I checked the DVD player with different bootable disk, but still nothing. Unit won't boot from DVD drive even if you press F12 and peripheral DVD selected. Not to mention that the recovery DVDs is loaded normally in my desktop pc. Notepad starts Windows OK the HARD disk and, which is incredible, is that, inside Windows, everything is OK. The DVD player works like a dream. However, it is not enough to perform a full restore, as the recovery process cannot be initialized by Windows.   Have you tried to change the boot priority in the BIOS?
  If this isn't the case, then first change the startup procedure to the CD player. The local network must be on the end.

  There could be different reasons for this... HARDWARE or SOFTWARE!

  First, you need to check if this occurs only when you are running windows.

  My laptop Toshiba Satellite 2430-s255 turns off 5 minutes every time I play streaming video clips to web sites using Windows Media Player version 10.0. I have uninstall the version 10 and used version 9, but there is no difference. Computer has 512 meg of memory and 10 GB of additional space on the hard drive.

  There is no problem when I play DVD using the same software.

  Toshiba support has been telling me that cpu is working hard and it heats up because of this problem. I used the fan to circulate the air, but the computer still shuts off.

  Any graphic activity will tend to make your laptop run more hot and therefore sufficient cooling.

  Make sure that your airway through the CPU radiator is not clogged with dust and debris (a lot of discussions in this forum about this) and also ensure that there is sufficient air under your laptop knife get in the fan air vents.
