I recently enabled Microsoft Update for my XP Media Edition 2004 after his being unavailable for a year due to corruption Trojan. The solution that worked there was rename the CATROOT2 folder and the SofwareDistribution folder in the Windows directory in the Windows > System32 directory and reboot. This solution came from the Microsoft site. After that, I was able to download and install 50 of 51 updates. A fails repeatedly: update for Windows XP (KB2686509) security. I get error code 0 x 8007005. I tried several fixes, including one designated for error 0 x 8007003 (rename file) download at download.old as well as the use of aggressive mode on Microsoft Fixit. Always fails to update. All other updates installed correctly, including a new this morning, but of course update continues offering that failed. Any ideas on how to get this installed? This is a relatively new, so I'm not sure that the problem is that it is already there, but the first failure was around 40 of the 51 when I check the history update file. Thanks for your suggestions.

XP fails: Security Update for Windows XP (KB2686509)
Hello.
I keep harassing to install the update for Windows XP (KB2686509) security, but the keeps installation not. No information about the reason.
I ran the 'Fix It' program. Had no effect whatsoever. My Windows XP looks ok in all other respects, except one: it will not install any version of Direct X from a previous version has been uninstalled months ago - I'm sure that it's irrelevant, but I mention it for completeness. That said, it seems to behave normally.
Oh and I disabled my Avast antivirus so it can't be blamed either. Ideas anyone? Thank you!

The Go.Microsoft.com reference site for this security update does not exist and automatically takes me to a site that is irrelevant.
I tried checking the utility support Windows successfully and he stretched something but still no change on my attempts to update.
I attepted to change my boot through the msconfig utility, but it still does not work.
I cold booted my computer without modification.
I disabled Norton 360 during the download and update and still no change.
In automatic update mode, it tries every night and shows me the message that failed in the morning.

I get the ready to install icon every day, all the time. Downloads, it will fail to install. I looked at the history of the installation failed, and the error code is 0x8007f0f4.
It's very frustrating, and I wish that Microsoft would issue a patch to fix this problem. I know I'm not the only one having this problem XP.
I tried Safe Mode boot suggestions, I have no viruses, I have a defective keyboard log, and they are all the files 'uninstall '. I don't know what to do with them, so left alone.

If you go to programs and features, and then on the left side you should see a link for "Daily display installed." Which would then show the list of updates with the State which will show you if it failed or not.Hope that helps. Mike - Engineer Support Microsoft Answers
