    Hi all.

I was wondering, what is the best configuration of RAID for ESX 3.5 performance?

I have a HP DL360 G5 Proliant with several SAS drives.

It will be better to make a RAID 5 o RAID1?

    Thank you!

There is no best RAID for ESX. Depends on VM disk usage profile - so if you plan to install SQL server and then create RAID appropriate for SQL server.

  • Backup Restore Time Machine does not see RAID external drive

    Hi all

I have a problem with my iMac restore from a Time Machine backup, and I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem already.

I had to reinstall OS X El Capitan from scratch, based on education, I received Support from Apple. That worked without problems and my iMac works fine. However, I wanted to restore it to how it was before, using Time Machine. I keep my backups on a LaCie 5big Thunderbolt 2 and never had any problems with it.

To restore the system, I followed the instructions on the Support page. I restarted my system in recovery mode and selected the "restore from Time Machine backup". Unfortunately the LaCie 5big does not appear on the list of drives, so I'm stuck... When you use the system in normal mode, the external RAID is visible and Time Machine stores backups on it without any problem.

Any of you are familiar with this problem? I would be very grateful if you could help me with this problem!

    Kind regards

    Valerio

    Hello

-While the system is booted in recovery mode, confirm that the Lacie 5big network is visible in disk utility.   You will need to disconnect / reconnect the Thunderbolt cable to the Lacie 5big be detected.

-Once seen, a new attempt to restore from Time Machine backup.

  • ESXi see raid 5

    Hello!!

I have a server esxi on a hp x 235. She saw by partiton two of bios Setup. RAID 1 (two disck) for the system to install esxi and raid 5 (4 discs) to install the virtual machine.

I installed my esxi and later, I checked only have a data store, and do not appear datastore2. Only appear the first and I don't know how I have to do to see this partition on my viclient.

I need to explain a bit.

    Excuse my expression.

What RAID controller do you use in the servers for the RAID-5?

Are you able to see the physical partition to RAID-5 at the start of the server?

    Hello

I installed ESXi4.1 on a usb key, the server has a configuration raid 5 with 6 TB of storage. As we all know Vmware will see LUN 2 TB minus 512 b. How can I create LUNS over there? People mention extensions is there a way to do this. I am not concerned if it is supported so that it works.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thank you

Welcome to the community - according to the RAID card you have to go to the hardware RAID card BIOS and create logical Volumes that are below the limit of 2 TB.

  • VMware ESXi 4.1 size not see Raid of the table.

After installing ESXi 4.1, I have a little problem with my intel RAID CARD turn a 4 X 1 TB drive in a raid 5 array.

ESXi sees the table and indicates that the capacity is 2.73 TB under storage adapters, but when you look under storage it says there is only 739 GB of capacity as well as the amount of available space. Somone explain what happened to my 2 TB?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jeff Norris

With vSphere Client (free version) maybe that this must be bought to be unlocked?

ESX and ESXi currently have a limit of 2 TB LUN.  Depending on the capabilities of your controller, you can get around this limit by creating several bays on the disk that are less than 2 TB.

  • ESX, RAID and other issues.

Hi all.  I tried to take a few production servers to a virtual environment.  A few questions have been forming in my head over the last few days to make the big move.  We hope a virtualization guru can help out me.

We conducted a RAID 1 configuration on the servers in the past.  After digging into it, I noticed that it is configured as software RAID.  ESX only does support hardware RAID?  If so, what in the list of capatability RAID controller would you all suggest someone on a budget who need performance as well?

Another thing I noticed during my research is that some people have had problems with the removal of their DNS and Exchange servers.  This is a common problem or if it is limited to certain cases?

    Thanks for help in advance.

    Hello

Software Raid only is not supported with ESX. Only hardware Raid. I suggest that you use a system of the HCL. You can search your system to see if it is supported. You should also watch your i/o devices and see if they are in the HCL of IO list. If those who are not, ESX will not work on the box.

Regarding the DNS and Exchange, the two work in ESX as VMs. For DNS, you can not your ESX host to have their names in their own host files just in case the DNS server fails, and you receive a chicken and the egg thing kind.

  • New ESX 4 install lack 2 TB

    Hi all

I installed ESX 4 on a Dell 2850 1.4 TB of local storage and 3.7 TB of storage.  Both local and fasteners have been implemented in RAID 5.  I created 3 Bay, a 30 GB for ESX, one with the remaining local and the other with storage.  When I set up data warehouses, I see all of the storage.  I created a datastor with all of the local storage.  When I try to create a store the attached storage data, it shows the total amount of 3.7 TB, but when I get to the size selection, it shows only 1.7 available to.  So, I'm missing 2 TB?  I have not yet found all the answers.  We have even wiped the whole thing and recreated all RAIDS and the berries without luck.

    Ideas?

    I appreciate all help.

    Rick

I'm assuming that when I returned to ESX I'd be able to use 2 TB of the attached table. I was always limited to a size of 1 TB, ignoring the other 2 TB.

You just never NOTICED before, it has always been so.  You cannot divide the space to the ESX level you MUST do it at the hardware level.

If you have a 3 TB drive, for example, and you want to use it as a data store, ESX will allow you to use ONLY 2 to, but for some strange reason, there is a vice that it allows you to use the rest of the storage, so if you try to install ESX on a single 3 TB drive, it will partition the drive and use the rest of this disc for VMFS.  so lets say that install it ESX takes 50 GB, which leaves 2.95 TB.

Now, you want to partition the VMFS, so he says he will create an extended partition 2.95, you plan to use 2 TB and do another extension, but ESX treats the drive as one partition divided for space.

So what is left is what you can use, which is .95TB, you will lose the initial 2 TB.

So for a RAID you need to allow the ESX to ONLY see 2 TB primary partitions at the same time, so you can install 1 2 TB and 1 1 to (or whatever that the partition be set up), then you can use ALL the space.  But if install you 1 contiguous 3 TB RAID and ESX sees it and attempts to partition, you'll be where you are now limited to 1.1 TB of space.  You must go back and change FIRSTLY to the material/RAID/LUN level.  Yes, we know, it's a bug, but this is how you can work around it.

  • PX6 - 300 d - double Raid 1 is not possible?

Hi guys, I hope I'm missing something, so I'm tender hand to support community. I've had a px6 for awhile now. I love. Works very well with VMWare hypervisors. I've been running a RAID 1 and a RAID 5 for over a year without any problems.

Now, my needs have changed. I run 2 raid-1 matrices. I deleted my raid-5 array and don't see Ano option in the list to create another Raid-1. Why is this? I see raid-10, but not what I need. Just another Raid-1.

In my case, I need to divide the disk IO system in another array of disks in raid1. Simply becoming the current Raid1 is not enough, because there a lot of requests for e/s which should not weigh down the second raid-1 array. I need raid1 because of the performance and the protection it offers.

Can someone comment on the creation of another array of Raid-1? I hope that I don't need to buy another NAS compete for this task.

    Thanks for the tips!

Figured it out. There is a bug in the GUI. Once you have 1 raid-1 array configured, there is no option to create an another raid-1 array. BUT, if you select a new table and set of raid-10, it can reset to raid-1 on the creation. I have now 2 tables separated from Raid1 created by doing it this way. They are NOT wiped off of mirrors raid-10.

    Hi William,.

How do you set up the raid volume? You use the WebBios utility?

If you use the WebBios utility you must make sure that you create two spans of two disks of each to be able to see raid 10 in option.  See the document below, it will show you how to configure raid 10 beginning on page 76.

  • Manually restart the Dell OMSA ESX agents

    Hello

Recently, I installed a server Dell OpenManage Essentials to monitor my ESX 5.0U1 hosts. I installed the VIB 7.1 via the Update Manager and everything was fine. I could detect and identify the hosts to OME and troubleshooting tool I could connect via WSMAN and retrieve all the details of the server. I also had the successfully servers send traps snmp on the server of the OME.

I didn't watch it all for a few weeks but noticed this morning that the OME server could no longer see any servers ESX and WSMAN wouldn't connect.  I want to restart the services/agents of dell on the ESX host computers without restarting the computer, but do not know the CLI commands. Could someone please.

    THX

I was on the phone with Dell's VMWare support last night for just this question.

Here restarts all the services management and worked for us.

We do not MOE, but OMSA on connections to remote VMWare host management is no longer accepted.  The following fixed it without a reboot of the host.

    restart the /sbin/services.sh

    (1) check if your hardware supported vSphere 4.1

    (2) suggest upgrade to ESXi instead of ESX

    (3) make sure that you update your vCenter server first and vCetner 4.1 will run only x 64-bit Windows systems

    (4) for the stand-alone version you have separated RAID for ESX and store data if so you can just format the drive on which ESX is installed

    (5) for the site with SAN storage disconnect from host to storage and re - join

Make sure that the upgrade guide is reviewed

  • Move LUNS from physical Windows area to an ESX VM without formatting

Hello. I'll convert machines physical (with converter stand alone) in virtual machines on my ESX servers.

These servers have local drives (for the OS, the quorum and other data readers) as well as multiple LUNS.

    First question:

My thoughts were to convert only local drives (jump the LUNS as they are already on the SAN). Then have the path of the SAN people (let me see) to my ESX servers. BIG draw back is that when I first plug a logic unit number, he wants to format. How can I connect to it and knew him ESX as store data without formatting? On the page [disk/LUN - formatting], there is no way NO format.

    Second question:

When you allow an ESX box to see a logic unit number that uses a Windows box, there is assertion that ESX wouldn't let me even see. It happens just to expiry. Is anyway about this or what I was removing people SAN paths to my Windows boxes and then add first to my ESX boxes later?  The SAN is controlled by another agency and this would add a lot of time in the middle and these servers are critical and can not be down for long.

If anyone can provide fairly detailed steps I would really appreciate it.

    INFORMATION:

    vCenter

    4.1.0 345043

    ESX servers

    4.1.0 < various levels of patch >

    physical boxes

    Windows 2003

    SAN

    Hitachi Fiber Channel

    (1) you can use these LUNS as RDM (raw device mapping), in which case you do NOT have to reformat them.  You just create a mapping of RDM.  See page 140 of this document: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_esx_server_config.pdf

    (2) Windows will apply the locks to the volume.  You need service entirely volumes of old guests prior to commissioning for the new ESX hosts.

  • ESX 3.5 U5 Virtual Machine memory usage

    Hello

I have a question about memory consumption I see on my ESX 3.5U5 hosts. I googled around and discover how ESX deals with management of memory... but I'm not sure that I put all the pieces together correctly in my brain. I hope you guys can help clarify this for me.

I have a few guests but will use one as an example:

This host has 64 GB of physical memory. There are a number of virtual machines residing on this host and the total amount of memory that I attributed to them is 40 GB. In VirtualCenter, I see on the Summary tab is 21,65/64 GB global memory on the host use and this is due to the fact that not all of the virtual machine are fully utilized.

Now more confusing part... I've attached a picture that contains screenshots of what I'm about to discuss...

    • In the tab control performance, the host indicates the high memory limit (100%) as being ~ 40 GB. I guess that's because I assigned only this amount of memory. Is it a correct assumption?

    • Why the configuration tab memory doesn't display that Virtual Machines use all 60 GB of memory available? I am not mistaken in assuming this is due to the fact that the host use and wrote to all parts of the physical memory as time passes (for overcommiting and balloon?) I expect this number to reflect either the current amount of memory of memory allocated to each virtual machine or memory present consumption.

    Any idea is appreciated.

    Hello

Instead of directly answering your questions, I will explain what each image represents. This will explain I hope that what you're seeing and why.

-At the top image, what it says is correct - this is memory that has been consumed by the virtual machines and may be less than what is given to them.

-L' the Middle image is to show you the total physical memory that is available for the use of virtual machines after that things like the service console and general system has been deleted. Not what is used or has left, but what total physical memory can be used.

-In regards to the third graph your hypothesis is correct. It is the memory allocated to the VM. This is different from consumed which is the actual physical memory, use virtual machines.

After reading my answer I'm not sure I have made better or worse? Let me know if further details are required.

    Kind regards

    Glen
