Since I've upgraded to internet explorer 8, he can't see that I'm connected to the internet

I have upgraded to internet explorer 8, but now unable to connect to the internet using my wireless connection.  Wireless has excellent resistance and worked very well with the previous IE.  I tried to reinstall and the same problem occurs.  It does not seem to accept as a connection.  The computer is windows xp. I put internet explore in the firewall exceptions.  When I open the browser, I get the connection to diagnose button and when I push it says an error has occurred because it is not able to diagnose the problem, but it does not say what is the error or how to fix it.  Is it possible to go beyond that, or I'm stuck using an earlier version of Internet Explorer?

Thank you
