SMBIOS VM UUID

Hi guys,.

I am trying to automate our CMDB with automatic updates, so we get an accurate billing based on the CMDB instead of various exports of various VC CSV files.

Because the virtual machines haven't really a serial number of an ID unique I wanted to fill a UUID persistent instead and then preferably UUID used by the operating system also for consistency.

I had the idea of Alans blog post in December and figured VM SMBIOS UUID ($_.extensiondata.) Config.UUID) fits over description.

He writes that the ID must be maintained during migration and that it is the UUID that is visible to the guest OS.

I have now come to full scale stable and noticed that some VMS changes this UUID from one day to the other, and I wonder what may be the reason.

We have not cloned them or anything like that, but we use fully automatic DRS and Netbackup with snapshot backup option.

It fits to the random model of what could be the result of a migration of DRS, but when the migration manually it seems to have kept the UUID, so I wonder if this may be due a virtual machine has been migrated and amplified to be so on a new ESX that generates a new UUID, or is it because he has migrated to an ESX where UUID is already used by another virtual machine (I think to) what Alan wrote: "This UUID is generated by the server ESXi for vCenter doesn't have to be in the control flow for the uuid.bios generating.")?

What could be the reason for the change of the UUID?

What would be the more static UUID to use in a CMDB? Or it is generally a bad idea?

Thanks for the tip Luc, was an interesting read, but I'm a little embarrassed to say that I think that I was a bit hasty in the creation of this post.

When we look deeper in my logs (must love Start-Transcript) and verified exactly what virtual machines it was touching I noticed that some of the VM, which was cloned and renamed incidents and the other was VMs in double where it was powered and had name of capital LETTERS and one has been turned off and name of tiny. Since the CMDB is not case sensitive we had only one record in the CMDB, but I use a foreach statement to complete Get - VM, so he changed for the second virtual machine.

My apologies, but the deadline is approaching, so I was a little quick on the establishment of this post.

  • Not enough space in Runtime area. Data not available SMBios. Inaccessible BIOS

Hello, I was trying a restore or Windows 7 install on a p6510y for a friend. Tried going into the bios to select which device to boot from.

I hit F10, it says enter the bios or enter the configuration..., then it goes to a black screen with a blue bar at the top. The blue bar is bright blue in the middle and it fades to the edge of the screen. It is not animated. I see no text or the cursor blinking either.

If I do not go into the BIOS, I get the message "not enough space in Runtime area. SMBios data will be unavailable"and if I hit F2 to continue, windows starts normally.

I stripped the system down to a single stick of RAM, tried a different PSU, graphics card, vga cable, etc.. I removed the cmos battery and flies over the rider for a solid 30 mins. I can not even access the bios.

It's a machine extremely strongly virused, I was able to install Windows 7 via disk external drive bootable. The recovery partition is still intact, although it seems empty, still too much space.

I ran sp49851.exe in windows 7 on the machine, the installation has been apparently successfully, but the BIOS always behaves in the same way.

I am at a loss, have spent many hours in checking these forums of discussion, does not. Is it possible for me to prepare a bootable USB key and manually install the bios? I extracted the contents of the exe to a folder but I don't know what to do next. The computer has a floppy drive port. For any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I was able successfully to Flash the BIOS manually, and it behaves as it should. Here's what I did:

I extracted the contents of my bios file (sp49851.exe), using a program called Universal Extractor.

I renamed the file alo6.09 to bios.rom (this was the only file required)

    I followed this guide:

    http://www.BIOS-mods.com/BIOS-update/

Make SURE you get the HP USB Disk Format Tool, they provide a link.

Make SURE you get the BACK image they provide a link for.

I used AFUDOS for my AMI BIOS, from which the above ROM file extension. (they provide a link to AFUDOS)

I used the command line afudos bios.rom/p/b/n/c/e/k/q/reboot (EXACTLY) how they said.

Went straight into the BIOS, was able to make changes. System seems to work fine. It is very important that you read all of this guide and be absolutely sure that you have the good BIOS before updating. Thanks for the help Dave!

  • [S531] UUID is invalid, how Flash BIOS?

    Hello!

My Lenovo Thinkpad S531 gives me an error message whenever I restart the computer that the UUID is invalid. This does not affect the performance but is really boring because of the beeps sounds.

I discovered that this error can be resolved using the WinPhlash.exe to backup the BIOS. Unfortunately, the program shows me the error code - 100: BCPSYS block signature not found.

What can I do to avoid this error message, or how do I enter the UUID of the motherboard BIOS. I do not have a guarantee of more and each piece is an original part of Lenovo.
    I use Windows 7 64-bit.

Please help me, because I feel that I searched through the whole internet and I found quite well how to get rid of this annoying error, but another error prevents me to do.

Thank you and have a nice day!

Only dealers and service providers have the disc.

  • ThinkPad Tablet 2 - error 2201: UUID of the Machine is not valid

I just unboxed my "nine" Thinkpad Tablet 2 and got an Error Message 2201: UUID of the Machine is not valid.

Network card, sound card, USB camera don't work at all. They said that I have not installed drivers for these devices. Because I can not connect to the Tablet, I'm unable to install a driver for them.

Can someone guide me to solve this problem?

    TKS you all!

Yes, you will need to send the machine back for the service.

    error 0271 real time clock

    2201 invalid uuid.

It is usually the Group of errors that you see if you replace a motherboard with a new one without ID defined using the service disc. If this started after service, bring her back.

  • start-up system not available SMBIOS runtime error

When I start my PC which runs on windows vista, I get the message "not enough space in runtime SMBIOS data area will be unavailable press F1 to resume.  I press F1 and the system terminates the process, but when I open Internet Explorer, "the page cannot be displayed".  I checked the memory and there are many, I checked my internet connection (which is a connection wired broadband), and there is no problem (I get internet on my other devices with wireless at home so I know that I have no problem connecting).  I looked for solutions and carried out as much as I could.  I think that my internet connectivity problem is the result of the error I get when starting the system.  I would update the BIOS, but unable to connect to the internet to do this.  I have run even the system restore, but have not used the system recovery again.  I need help!

It is a problem with the BIOS or the motherboard before Windows begins loading same. So nothing do you in Windows will help.

It should be possible to create a CD on another computer to try to update the BIOS. Try to get into the BIOS and look for a reset option. Also try to remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard for five minutes to see if it will reset things.

In diagnostic test systems, it indicates that the SMBIOS failed.  There is, however, no option click on this, or know how to fix. What is SMBIOS? Is it different from regular BIOS? How to fix it. This caused my computer to start not properly all the way, it freezes. I try to avoid restoration of hard drive recovery.  Thank you.

    Hi Rrc421,

The System Management BIOS (SMBIOS) is responsible to declare the configuration data from the computer to the diagnostic programs.

For more on the support of SMBIOS, I suggest you to visit this link provided below and download SMBIOS.

  • Omni 27 SMBios boot - off blueray KB

    Omni 27 1054, Windows 7 Professional.

I recently moved my hub USB powered a 2.0 to a PC 3.0 port PC port (port Manhattan 28 (24x2.0 and 4x3.0)). What happened then is that my blueray KB was not while initializing SMBIOS. I had to remove the USB 3.0 port hub or plug in a USB KB to use or connect the USB hub to the USB 2.0 port to obtain the SMBIOS password typed in. Someone has seen this? It seems to be a conflict neglected in the SMBIOS (FRIEND 7.12, 29/03/2012) program.

Wow, thanks for waking me up. First of all he should have read bluetooth not blueray. Your USB reviews prompted me to go get specifications for my PC again. I finally found them at http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03131099 for the KB and mouse are USB remote and no bluetooth and for l all ecept why who care 1 USB 3.0 disables the connection to the KB and mouse. In any case thanks for the wake-up call.
