Snapshot LUN

Buenas,
conoce a what is refiere el concepto ¿alguien LUN snapshot?

Gracias.

Hola, segun tengo understood son LUN that son una "foto" otra LUN, unalterable there generally is obtienen por medio snapshot mechanisms o backup of some cajas/cabinas of disco.

VMware reconoce estas LUN como lo son, UN, no permite write instant sober las premium y por lo as recuerdo con some cabinas IBM habia as hacer UN will del volumen of datos para poder each.

No soy UN expert in el tema pero todo lo puedo than escucho.

  • LUN mounted as a snapshot

    Hi all

We have five esx host, a logical unit of Assembly number: some hosts marks LUNs as snapshot, others do not.

    What can be the reason?

    Thank you very much

ESX can detect as a snapshot LUN if the LUN ID are different between servers or for other reasons, here's a link with more details: http://blog.baeke.info/blog/_archives/2006/9/29/2372780.html

To change this behavior and accepts LUN to ride even if they are detected as a snapshot, highlight the host ESX in the VI Client, select the Configuration, advanced settings tab, select LVM and change "LVM. DisallowSnapshotLun"to"0 ". Click Ok, and then restart the host.

  • How to add a LUN replicated to vCenter for test of recovery after disaster?

We are currently on version 5.1 of ESXi and vCenter.  We have a DR test to come to one of our applications that includes about 12 VMs.  My question is, when he introduced the LUNS replicated to our Dominican Republic / Test environment vSphere on our DR site, should we choose to will Lun?  I thought I had read somewhere that for all hosts in a cluster VMware can see the LUN, it must be resigned, rather than simply mount the LUNS without resignaturing, which I believe cannot be presented to a host then do it this way.  I just wanted to confirm whether or not it is correct.

Also, if will be resignaturing LUN, we must manually update the references for each virtual machines vmdk files, or which is done automatically?

When making a DR test previously and just pick up the LUN and not at will, the logic unit number was visible as a single host that is located in a three-node cluster.

    Thank you

What will happen when you present a LUN to a host depends on whether the host saw the signature before, i.e. the LUN was mounted previously and was not dismantled/detached correctly. In the case of a known signature, the LUN will be considered to be a 'snapshot LUN' and it is necessary to will it to make it appear like a new LUN on the host, or you will have to manually force mount the LUNS. By resignaturing the LUN to one of the hosts, it will be recognized by all other guests too. Editing should be done separately on each host. For more information, see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011387.

You can also take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2004605 to find out how properly remove/detach a unit logic of a host number, so that should not keep the signature.

  • Signature LUN after replacement of the RAID controller

    I have the following scenario:

I had a Cisco UCS server with an LSI controller. I needed to replace the controller to another, the same form, different model.

I've done the replacement physical, powered on the server. ESXi starts fine, but no data store appears. Data warehouses are on the local hard drive. There is no remote storage.

When I try to add the data store, I had 2 options of mainly:

    -Keep the existing signature

    -A new signature assing.

I'm sure both will work, and I'd go with the first.

However, I would like to know what impact the selection of one of these options. Similar cases, I will, will that be the best since I'm on a new material for RAID controller?

Or would it not matter at all if I keep the same signature?

I have beenr of reading on these 2 options, and for local storage, they do not seem to make any difference, but would like to know any other thoughts.

I kinda fear Award for a new signature.

    Thank you.

Due to the replacement of the controller, the ESXi host now recognizes the LUN as a snapshot LUN, it contains a signature known, but it is presented to another controller. Given that you can ensure that the logic unit number is unique, I don't see a requirement for resignaturing it.

  • Store of data detected as snapshot (probably resigned)

Hello, we met a little scenario where one of our data warehouses have resigned and only the host that does this can see it now.

There are on the Windows File Cluster VM:s data store with RDM disks. Virtual machines are running on the host computer that sees data warehouses.

All other hosts in the cluster detects the LUN as a snapshot lun. (l., esxcfg-volumes - and in the vmkernel logs we see also the message)

Can I do an esxcfg-volumes - M < UUID > on this volume on all other hosts in the cluster without interruption of the VM:s? The volume they the can mount: Yes value.

    VMFS3 UUID / label: UUID/VolumeName >

Can we will: no (the volume is actively used)

    Hello

If the data store is detected as a snapshot, there are two options:

1 will - requires all virtual machines on this data store and you service interruptions must be vigilant if a virtual machine has several disks on several data stores.

    2. mounting strength i.e. esxcfg-volumes - M -, without interruption. ATTENTION: If you do a force mount make sure that there no SAN replication takes place, because if you snapshots are data warehouses are created, data warehouses could be mounted by VMkernel and this could result in data corruption.

    All the best.

    Kind regards

  • LUN copy, LabManager backup

    Hello

I'm under VC 4.0, the hosts are ESX 3.5 and LabManager is 4.0.

The main goal is to back up by using the VM LabManager amounted less space backup and without having to stop virtual machines while performing the backup.

My plan was to make a snapshot of the LUN (I have one all LM data isolated on a single LUN) and then take a backup of said. The snapshot of the LUN is easy, but then what do I do with it? I want to introduce logic unit number to a host which can read VMFS, so I can get my data on tape. Which excludes any Windows host, because he will not be able to read the file system, right?

So, I present the LUN to an ESX host? But that can't do it now, because the LUN ID don't match those on the LUN. It's a question that I need repair or the host will see the new LUN as a snapshot LUN?

Once I have the LUN that is readable from a host that I need dealt with by my backup agent. Really, I prefer not having to install agents on my ESX host, but this seems to be the only way to do it? Unless I have copy from my ESX host to a windows server and have to back up. Which would mean that I now need space for the live LUN, space for the snapshot LUN to the backup on a windows host and space for it on my backup system.

I expect to hear what others are doing, sullen cause I got hurt

Looks like you are looking for a solution basically save your VMS hosting of Labmanager. Would be a solution to use here something like VMware consolidated backup, or any other company software backup level that has VCB integration allowing them to backup vmfs file system.

  • How to properly map NTFS via RDM disk

    Hello!

I made the next task facing - I need to map storage P6300 EVA NTFS disk.

The area created for the collector, to EVA host created, presented in a drive to it. After that, map this drive via "Add HDD - RDM-... ». It has been done successfully.

Virtual Server (Windows 2012 x 64) contains this disk, but I can't access to it - file system is RAW, not NTFS. I can not format this drive - there are a lot of DBs, which are in use

If I try to open the drive I get error "no access. The required resource is busy.

So, how can I properly map via RDM NTFS drive?

NTFS (CSV and applications supporting it) is not just a clustered file system and is never designed for simultaneous access of several sources. Uncontrolled as this access is likely to cause data corruption.

The physical SQL host is probably SCSI locks as well, completely blocks access fortunately Windows seems smart enough not to try to force to replace the lock of SCSI.

So yes, unless you stop or remove the LUN from the other host you can not access. A copy separate/snapshot LUN should work fine but.

  • Target iscsi ESXI 5.0, active path connected, mounted, are not not in the data store data store

    HI -.

I am looking for help to point me in the right direction.  This problem occurred after a reboot of the system.

    I'm in vmware esxi essentials 5.0.0 821926

I use the starwind software as my iSCSI target

I use ISCSI to connect to my server from storage to the esxi hosts.

I have 2 warehouses of data showing inactive under clusters of data storage and the data store.  I have a third-party data store on the same server that is loading properly.

I currently have the same behavior on three esxi hosts:

under configuration - storage adapters is the ISCSI path is active. Data warehouses appear under devices and mounted.  In data warehouses, they are inactive. On the same storage server

on the starwind Server - I have

    built a new target

removed and added the databases to the new target

Changed the IP address of the target.

On Esxi hosts, I removed the ISCSI server, discover places BOF dynamic and static and added under the same or IPs news discovery

I can restart esxi hosts & storage servers and get to that same point.

Whenever I find myself in the same place - course assets, devices mounted, inactive in data warehouses

I don't know what else to share, let me know what you need to know to help out me.

    Thank you

OK, incase someone crosses my ramblings, it may help.  My original question was warehouses of data that would not rise.  They were visible as devices in the area of storage under devices and as devices in the scsi adapter.

When I would try to force mount them, add storage, keep the signature, mount they wouldn't mount.  I did some research and my question was after a failed mount attempt strength as got data attached as snapshots warehouses.  I then mounted force them and he tells will data warehouses and I got them back.

I followed this KB to identify and resolve the problem

manipulation of vSphere detected as snapshot LUN LUN (1011387)

    When it was over, I tried to add vms back and found a new show.  Power of vms would expire.  the vmkernel.log showed;

(2014 05-27 T 03: 45:47.821Z cpu4:2052) NMP: nmp_PathDetermineFailure:2084: SCSI cmd RESERVE failed on the vmhba35:C0:T1:L0 path, booking on eui.cff548d1952b1e4c of device status is unknown.

I had latency huge read write showing upwards, 3K and more

After several searches, I had in the ESXShell and found that there is no conflict of booking.

On a whim, I took inventory all virtual machines that are now inaccessible.  I then added a DOS virtual machine. Alto! the latency down to version 1.2 a.7 ms for all data warehouses.

ultimately the instructions said you may need to add virtual machines in the inventory, but does not remove all virtual machines first.  I was grabbing vms that were not in stock, so I didn't remove the old virtual machines in the inventory.

  • After doing a failover and failback - store of data replicated

So I have a question of the State of the data store where my vms are in fact a table after failover and restore.

I did a few VMs reocvery failover, and then made a reprotect and definitely failed virtual machines to their original location... Then when I discovered the virtual machines they are running on the original cluster before testing with SRM (as expected)

what I didn't expect is the data store using the vms system has the prefix "follow" yet.

I really don't think that the store of data they use is a snapshot, when I did an esxcfg-volume - l, nothing came as far as snapshots.

So has she not only removed the prefix 'snap' or did I miss something...

    Thank you!!!

Regarding your point about retrieved data warehouses, they actually aren't all that normal.  During the recovery process, vSphere resignatures LUN and it is this will need the LUN that makes vSphere treat it like a snapshot.  The prefix '-wink', says @memadd, is just the default agreement used by SRM for resigned handling LUN, that they are all in the recovery.  The recommended option to keep the original name works well, I've used it before datacenter migrations.

    These could help.

  • Error connection rebuilt host on the San

We had to reinstall ESX 4.0 on one of our guests. I have configured the iscsi connections to be the same as before ip addresses. The SAN has the same ip for my rebuilt host addresses. When I try to add the storage to the rebuilt host he asks me if I want to keep the existing signature, new signature or re format. I tried to select keep existing and also new signature. I use our store iso in order to test this process out. the rebuilt f\hosts will not add the lun because he says he has alreay of active connections. I removed the host access right and I can add the iso lun on the host rebuilt. When I try and add the iso to the host lun well it won't let me. It wants to format the volume.  Don't know what the deal is.

ESX is recognizing your LUN as a snapshot LUN and asking you to keep or change the signature to match with the discovery.  It is probably your id LUN change somehow, or being found out differently.  On the host that is not recognizing the LUN, go to your esx console and run 'esxcfg-volume-l '.

If that comes back with the correct LUN, you should be able to run 'esxcfg-volume - M ' to ride again.

  • Need help while mapping of data to another host store.

    Dear team,

I have a single cluster and two hosts esx is a member of the same thing. now ESX1 SAN1 lun that is only visible to host ESX1, now we have mapped LUN SAN1 at ESX2, it is visible to add windows storage

    CR.JPG

What option I will choose to add a data without lossing store existing data.

    Please help me, it's urgent...?

    Concerning

    Mr. VMware...

From orders, it seems that your colleague has checked if the LUNS were visible as of the snapshot LUNS and then mounted their strength to the host (see, for example, http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011387) Once mounted he checked if data warehouses are available (write access) simply by creating and deleting the file.

In any case, if the ID LUN LUN in the same environment of vCenter Server do not match you may run into questions at a later time. Then please ensure the LUN ID match!

    André

PS: It is equivalent to the "vdf" Linux command 'df' command, but has a few additions about the scores of VMware.

  • QueryUnresolvedVMFSVolumes() returns nothing

    Hi @all,

I build a PowerShell script to mount the snapshot LUN in a case of DR. But my QueryUnresolvedVMFSVolumes returns nothing in my script. If I use all the lines manually I get the expected return. There is nothing in the script. Can anyone help?

  • problem of iSCSI

    Hello

I currently have a linked to a QNAP TS-809U for storage server VMWare ESXi 3.5

I have 3 targets iSCSI configured on the QNAP NAS server and after a reboot, the ESXi server map 2 of the 3 targets.

The first works well, but I can't find the others... When I go to add storage, discs are seen here (2 discs 1 TB iSCSI on NAS), but if I had to match, they would be erased.

I would like to re - map without destroying the data if possible.

If I go to the SSH console and type fdisk - l, I see all 3 iscsi drives it.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you

    Richard

Snapshot LUN means that for some reason, might be the same LUN appearing as a different id logic, the calculated signature LUN crash unit number is not the same as the signature written to the LUN itself.  Thus, ESX disables access to the LUN, to avoid a conflict with a logic unit number, and it is the mirror that is attached to the same host.  In your case, the LUNS are different, but ESX think they are a mirror LUN instead.

The LVM. DisallowSnapshotLun will take this 'snapshot' lun by clearing the snapshot verify functionality of ESX.

In this same section of configuration, you can use option will, that will be will the LUN and create a new name for the data on this LUN store, without destroying the data on this LUN.

  • LVM/EnableResignature value = 1 with PowerCLI on ESX 4.1

Hello, because the way in which the Snapshot LUN management has changed dramatically in ESX/ESXi 4.x, we are looking for a way to set the LVM/EnableResignature 1 on our guests via a script. We did it on older versions of ESX, but now we can call is no longer this setting because of the change in ESX 4.x.

I'm not going to explain why we want to do this because it would take too much time. But I would be grateful if anyone has a sollution to do this, because now I'm going to the first host in the cluster and manually set the LVM/EnableResignature = 1 to serviceconsole with esxcfg-advcfg - s 1/LVM/EnableResignature, then the script filters hosts and selects the first name and made a will on data warehouses.

Can someone help me with this if possible. We do not want call PuTTY in our script to do this.

    Henrik,

    Luc's version says $optarray as a vmware.vim.optionvalue array

In this way, you can add several optionvalue elements to the table and change them alltogether with just one call to the UpdateOptions method.

    Interesting things.
