  I considered just take a chance and update the iphone software app 'Settings' of the phone with the ability to do a "restore" via iTunes on the laptop if I ran into problems. Then, however, I found that the button "backup restore" in iTunes was "greyed out" and not "clickable".

Without details, it is hard to say why we are witnessing this, but did you ever having installed iOS 10 beta? If Yes, then you can get up-to-date public final version with the section of the following article that is titled "download the latest version of iOS.
