Tenendo conto che abbiamo in azienda 5 vm che can mess a massimo 10 (dc, exchange server, sql server con UN a di 4 GB database e niente di grave) I wanted to know a po' di opinions.

Sapete come if collega? Ethernet oppure fc? Che cavi need? Doubt? perplessita? software da acquistare?

Affido mi a voi che chew più di me...

Grazie thousand

• LUN directly linking to the virtual machine

Hello
I have a cluster of 2 IBM x 3650 M3 ESXi5.0 and IBM N3300 system storage (NetApp FAS2020) CF.
My question is how to attach logical unit number to an operating system directly invited (win2008 R2) using FCP?
At the moment I add NPIV successfully to my VM but one can not access the LUN. System and initiator of the stogare groups are configured with the WWN, but still no success.
My plan is to use a unit number logic to multiple virtual machines with the aim to store multiple databases in a safe place.

There is another option... to use a same vmdk of several virtual machines, but my boss wants to open the file in case of failure of the virtual machine and I don't know how to make this opening...

Yes, this can be done. All by adding the new RDM choose a different SCSI controller (ex: 1:0) with the option of sharing of Bus. Please refer to the configuration guide MSCS, section 3, "Creating virtual machines across physical hosts"

• Update to version 4.1 EXSi 5.1 with NetApp Filer as storage device

It is simple to upgrade a single host EXSi the old version to a new version. But how to change a host mounted storage NetApp Filer (data store). I'm not familiar with NetApp Filer as storage device. Receive detailed information or step by step example 1) disassembled the NFS share? (2) the driver update from 4.1 to 5.1 3 exsi) then go up the NFS share?

Hi ginger8990,

It's me again by reviewing some of your recent posts, I see that you're eager to learn, so I'll throw a little more treats to snack on there. That's just my opinion and how I do things, your and other approaches may vary. A large part of it, you'll already know so forgive me, but better too much, not enough, I say.

Compatibility

Always check the compatibility and interoperability of the matrices for all suppliers. When in doubt degenerate to a provider and ask, it's their job to answer.

BIOS / Firmware

When you upgrade, you can also take the opportunity during this downtime to update your BIOS Firmware server, etc. to the desired standard.

vmkping

Once the server is online and ESXi has been updated, you can confirm own access to storage by a vmkping on the IP Address of the file server to a session of putty/SSH on the VMHost (particularly useful for testing the frames extended if use you it). Other than that, if you see that data warehouses are not grayed out (i.e. you can right click and browse their) then you should be good to go. Set up a test of the virtual machine and discover things.

VSC NetApp data OnTap Versions

As you upgrade your VMHost 4.x to 5.x, this means that the version of vCenter was already updated (requirement hard as you know). I see that you mentioned that you use vCenter (VCSA). You also use the Netapp VSC? If so this would be installed on a Windows Server of some sort I don't think that it is still supported on VCSA (but I could be wrong).

See the version of your NetApp VSC plugin and talk to your storage team to decide if they want to update. They might want to consider their Data OnTap version among others before deciding (OnTap version is also very relevant if research of VAAI and SIOC features... don't worry about these last 2 If you have not yet started it in this way).

IVMS

After the upgrade of the VSC, you should review annex IVMS (NetApp snapshots) If you use those. Do not skip the IVMS review or you can violate SLAS for lack of shots every night. The reason is that after a VSC your schedule component upgrade snap may have to be reconfigured. In any case, the VSC upgrade is optional, but desired.

Advanced settings (vmkernel)

Using the traditional fat vSphere C# lient, you must also confirm that each of the ESXi hosts have the best practical vmkernel advanced settings for NFS. You can view your VMhost conformity of the Home > NetApp plugin on the vSphere client. I don't have it in front of me now, but I think it's under the "host discovery" in the plugin. Just scroll your host in the plugin and see if it is consistent. Alternatively, you can right-click and apply the settings to the VMHost in question (required restart ESXi). The advanced settings can also be made manually in the Client vSphere for each host, or using PowerCLI.

CDP and own Communication reports

As always, before making any upgrade, it is always useful to collect a RVTools report and store it off to Excel for reference. A COP report (as this or that) is also useful. The CDP report shows the switch ports that your host is connected. Send this report to your boys network and tell them of ' contempt restarts on the following interfaces during upgrades of the host'.»» It's always nice to communicate, more if you have trouble the ports in question are clear for everyone.

OOB (out-of-band access)

Ideally, you should have the band access to the server (that is, KVM over IP, HP ILO, Dell iDRAC, IBM RSA, etc.). These are all examples of the technology used to reach the server where the management interface is not reachable on the network. If you do not, you should have physical access to the server, or planning your upgrade, when you know that someone who does not have physical access can reach the server if you have trouble.

DNS and time synchronization

Make sure that the synchronization host is NTP correctly and that the DNS addresses are correct. It is a town that gets loser on fresh builds. Your upgrade which should carry on but without problem.

Profiles of the host

If you use the host profiles, the final step would be to update or create a new profile of the newly updated reference host host (host > Host Profiles), and then verify the compliance of each improved host. This view hosts and Clusters by selecting the Cluster in the left pane, and then clicking on the 'Compliance profile' tab in the right pane. Then, right-click on the desired host and select "Verify profile respect" (then scroll way down to see if something fails verification). When in doubt, stick to the upgrade of a host at a time and test/prove your success.

Tools and vHardware for virtual machines

After the upgrade, you can choose to update tools VMware, then the material as usual (both optional and can be postponed to a later date to support simple roll-back to 4.x if necessary).

Note: since you're going to 5.1 we still call vHardware. 5.5 it is called virtual compatibility. You can be several versions behind on this and always be supported. Most people just do it sooner than later however. Always just, don't forget to make the tools before hardware. I think you have it mastered well

Summary and closing

OK, so it's a lot of techno babble I just typed (and believe me there is more) but the reality is that you would be fine not to read all this and just upgrade. Try and do your best to organize your approach and research / ask questions until you are comfortable. In the end, the best way to learn is through practice. Anyway, NFS is very forgiving and is probably the easiest support in VMware thing. Good luck and have fun!

• NetApp VSC v6.1 UI is missing from the Web Client v6.0u1

I recently updated my vCenter Server 5.5 to v6.0u1 (2k12r2 for Windows with backend SLQ 2012). With that I installed a fresh instance of Virtual Console storage NetApp v6.1. All was working perfectly until I've restarted the vCenter after about 2 weeks of operation of the new version. After you restart the gui NetApp VSC and features were missing completely on the web client. The plugin has always shown as active in the webclient service is, however, no GUI. Strangely when I try to disable the plugin from the web client, it refreshes and remains only set as active.

In heavy client, the icon was always present, however with the new version (6.1), no functionality can be achieved through this and you are just re-directed toward the Web Client of VMware. Backups were still underway at the scheduled time, even if the plugin was not visible in the Web Client.

I tried the following:

The re-registration plugin

-Stop webclient VC services, stripping any trace of com.netapp* of the VMware folder of the directory (program files and program data). Mainly located in the folder of vSphere-Client-serenity

-Departure VC web customer service

-Re-enrollment VSC with VC

All the re - install

-Stop services of VC

-Stripping any trace of com.netapp* of the VMware folder of the directory (program files and program data)

-Stop services VSC

-Do a complete uninstall

-Remove the VSC installation directory

-Reboot server VSC to delete reg keys

-Install the new copy of VSC 6.1

Re-record with the VC Server

The same question is observed. The plugin shows as being installed. The extension "com.netapp.nvpf.weblient" exists in the breast of the https://< vCenter > / mob. (see attached screenshot). The thick client still shows the plugin as permitted, as the web client. I still cannot see the interface user via the web client despite the plugin is installed and activated.

Tear out my hair with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Guys,

An update on this issue, it could be useful to resolve any other issues similar and research...

After 4months our case eventually made its way to the development of the web client team in VMware. The problem has been identified as a corrupted file in vCenter which is responsible for organizing the status "enabled/disabled' plugins customer web. Difficulty as follows:

"C:\ProgramData\VMware\vCenterServer\data\vSphere Web Client\SerenityDB\serenity\ALL\client.package.states.

The solution was: -.

• Delete the file
• Open customer vcentre, administration, plugins
• Disable a random plugin (this forces the State file recreate)
• Exit vcentre and then reopen
• Plugins should now be visible
• Customer goto plugins and re - turn that which has been previously disabled

Good luck guys, it was a serious pain in the ass

• Netspp old storage and issues of Cluster VMWARE

Hello

I saw a former NETAPP FAS 2020 connected storage and confiigured with the cluster of 4.1

Customer is polanning to install new vcenter and ESXi 5 new hosts and want to migrate virtual machines to new Cluster and get rid of the old because of some problems of old hosts

I heard some mouth sharing old storage Netapp Storage can cause some strange problems and can cause some virtual machines get corrupted

is that correct? strange problems known?

Sharing storage should be the correct way to migrate virtual machines safely to the news of ESXi

It's exactly the way I use to migrate virtual machines to a cluster. I've done a couple of times (also with 3.5/4.x/5.0 storage Netapp and ESXi) and never had corrupted VMs. what VMFS is designed for.

Of course, I would not share a LUN to ESXi hosts between different vCenters as final configuration but for migration, it is reasonable.

Just know that:

-Do not upgreade to VMFS5 until all ESXi4 hosts are disconnected.

-Storage i/o Control does not work across multiple vCenters.

-migrate does not mean "vMotion" but: power off > remove inventory > add to the inventory > voltage (of course...)

• Question about vmdk names and they are contained in folders

ESX 4.0 update 3 with a fileserver netapp fas2020.

I am running mbralign on my servers and it seems that some of our vmdk inconsistent naming what I what they be. I know I can rename the folder that contains the vmdk, but then, how can I change the path in the settings of the server itself to point to the new folder name? Also can I rename the vmdk somehow through CLI?

If you have vCenter and Storage vMotion, it's the best way to get the vCenter object name, the name of the datastore folder and it's underlying files to all the named correctly. You can storage vMotion invited and it will fix the naming convention.

Other methods are mentioned in the KB below

http://KB.VMware.com/kb/1029513

Edit: there is a bug in vSphere5 that renames the folder but not she's underlying files using Storage vMotion. The solution is to rename the files through the CLI.

• Building a cluster and HA

Hello

I have several questions, but first, a little overview of my systems.
I use ESXi 5.0 on 2 IBM x 3650 M3 connected to IBM N3300/NetApp FAS2020-storage system for the CF a20.
I intend to build a cluster with this machines and store the virtual machines on the storage. I have all hosts 4x2.5 cm 10 k HDD in RAID10

1 q: is it possible to have the same VM files on storage and local disks, virtual machine storage running and if the storage system fails start VM automatically from local disks.

2Q: I have already create a cluster, but when I restart a host (simulation of an event of default) change the virtual machine host but VM freeze and automatic restart.

Hi etniesBG,

Yes, is it possible to have the same VM files on local disks and storage.

No, if the storage system does not start VM automatically from local disks.

"Life would be so much easier if we only had the source code.
• updgrade ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.1

Hello

I know there are various documents on the upgrade from ESX 3.5 to 4.1 and I read some of them, but I need help from those who have

experience.
My current configuration
Material:
1 HP BladeSystem C3000 enclosure
• 5 blades ProLiant BL460c G1

• 1 NetApp FAS2020 where all my VM:s (NSF)

• 1 NetApp FAS2020 where all my VM backups

Software:
• ESX 3.5 update 5

• VCenter 2.5 runs on a virtual machine, windows 2003 32-bit

• Database SQL2005 Express runs on Vcenter

• NetApp Snapmanager

My new Setup:
Material:
• 1 HP BladeSystem C3000 enclosure

• 5 proLiant BL460c G7

• We use the same ESX 3.5 current storage systems use

Software:
• ESX 4.1

• VCenter 4.1 works on a new G7 BL460c, windows 2008 R2

• Sql2008 database running on another server

• NetApp Snapmanager

Our plan:
• No upgrade ESX 3.5, but install ESX 4.1 on 5 new knives

• Move/migrate 30 VM:s of ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.1 hosts guests again

• Keep the old host ESX 3.5 to run virtual machines, but these ESX 3.5 will administer the new Vcenter 4.1

My question:
1. I have to keep the database I had on the old environment?

2. I should updgrade the database? If so, why?

3. Can I cancel the registration of a former host to vcenter 2.5 and enter it with the new VirtualCenter and migrate it is the VM:s of this new host-to-host 4.1 and upgrade then VMware VM:s tool and virtual hardware?

4. What about a virtual machine that has snapshots?

Thanks for all tips

If you delete snapshots, actually will not delete files in your virtual machine. It will merge the files newly updated with your base vmdk file. The only ting that you lose is that you can't return to your virtual machine to your restore point.

• Remove the virtual SAN HP P4000 VSA

Hello

We have 2 Dell poweredge 2950 host running vpshere 4.0 and we have virtualized internal storage of these Dell using P4000 VSA happening as a virtual machine on each host. Our virual servers use this storage.

Recently, we introduced NetApp FAS2020 on our network and we move all the virtual servers for the netapp.

My question is "what is the best way to remove theP4000 VSA Vsphere? (I don't want leave no trace). We don't have support with HP and could not find much information on the web.

I've attached screenshots of the console management VSA and vsphere.

Hello.

These are just virtual machines that use the local VMFS storage on servers, so to get rid of them first to power them off. Then right-click on them and choose "Delete from Disk. This will permanently delete.

Good luck!

• Implemented 2-3 other Terminal servers - virtual servers

I am currently running VMWare 3 on 3 host connected to a NetApp FAS2020 FC

Currently we have 4 servers TS Server 2008 running, my thought was just cloning one of the servers and then create TS5 TS6 and so on. I think we might be on not enough space so I was going to contact NetApp on the addition of multiple LUNS in SAN storage.

Any suggestion or help would be greatly apprecaited.

I will also seek in licensing for our servers MS, a lot of work to do.

Thank you

I just talked to a techguy from vizioncore yesterday invited to stop by the police station Tuesday for evidence of what I have heard about this.

The vizioncore guy told me that it suggests we can save 40 to 50 percent of our storage with their tool. I'd go up to 20% will see what will be the outcome Tuesday.

Œuvres of ESXi, in my opinion, better so worth ESX (I´d like to call it classic) because of the console, you don't have where third-party software can be installed and spoil your ESX host.

Any ESXi host can manage your Terminal servers. A guy told me that they tried various configurations of TS on VMware. He has figured out the the Advanced or the Windows Enterprise Version works best with TS especially on ESX.

• 12 c CARS bug or I have to fix ist: "PRVF-5150 < DRIVE > not valid path."

Hi, after many problems with the installation of 12 c first BECAUSE I am now a bridge, I have one problem left.

My system:

2 knots, with ASMLib

Storage: netapp

I created disks ASM, oracleasm say that everything goes well on both nodes:

[root@dbb-n15-01 /] # /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks

DISK01

DISK02

DISK03

DISK04

DISK05

DISK06

DISK07

But the Oracle installer condition tests says:

PRVF-5150 < DRIVE > not valid a path

Can I gnore it? Unter 11 g BECAUSE I know, that there was a bug, but I thought it's fixed...

Thanks for your help.

Greetings from Berlin

So, I ignored the Message After checking with oracleasm that everything is ok. The installation of the grid completed without error.

• Strange NFS permissions problem

Hi all

We have a vsphere English 3 server essentials most updated, with an iSCSI Equallogic SAN and a Netapp FAS2020 holding an NFS volume.

The Netapp is older, so it does not take our critical data, we usually deploy something new on it to test and them he move to the Equallogic.

This time we just finished a new project a few days ago and had not moved out the Netapp data even when we had a problem.

We have been doing some maintenance switch yesterday and blew a breeze, causing the Netapp to power off. When he returned to the top, the virtual machine on it doesn't work.

I get this error:

An error was received from the ESX host turning on VM GR-VidyoGateway.

Cannot create the file ' / vmfs/volumes/7598db61-d9422e03/GR-VidyoGateway/vmx-GR-VidyoGateway-1219306367-1.vswp ': Permission denied

Not able to start VMX: msg.vmk.status.VMK_NO_ACCESS

Watch the virtual machine vmware.log file. Nothing in it since the power blip. I tried to restart the virtual machine, so there should be something in the newspaper, but there is nothing new (+ 24 hours later).

I can browse the store of data without problem and can copy some files to the virtual computer out of it, but others, like the vmdk, give an error. Also, I can not data to the Equallogic, same question of vMotion. Also, I can not create any new files/folders on the data store, it feels like she is read-only, but I don't know where that would have occurred.

Here is a list of the directory:

/ vmfs/volumes/7598db61-d9422e03/gr-VidyoGateway # ls - la

Total 6597852

drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4096 9 August 01:13.

-rw - r - r - 1 root root 764766 9 August 01:13 vmware.log

Note the permissions are different on some files. I tried chmod 644 them but get access denied.

I tried to copy the files from the console/cli to esxi, but get access denied.

I mapped the NFS share on a Windows machine and receive the same access denied error on these files (even once a copy OK, but not the VMDK)

On the NetApp. This is what looks like the export:

/ flight/vol0/Home - sec = sys, rw, nosuid

/ flight/vol0 s = sys, rw, anon = 0, nosuid

/ flight/vol1 s = sys, rw, nosuid

We use the export of flight/vol1.

If I maps to one of the other exports above, I can create and delete files very well, so it's just the one that was in use that has a problem.

I'm not sure what it takes, anyone have any ideas?

To follow up, I was able to fix this by opening on the Netapp filerview and giving the host esxi 'root' access to intellectual property. I don't know why RW wasn't enough, but with the root, I could get get the data off the coast, as well as burn it again.
