  • List of bookmarks replaces the bar menu and taskbar

When I open a folder of bookmarks that contains a long list of bookmarks that extend upward in the menu bar and down in the taskbar, menu and task bars are crushed and remain even after the bookmarks menu is closed. It remains until the browser is closed, and then reopened or click on the 'Show desktop' button in Windows.

If disabling hardware acceleration works then you can probably do nothing else to fix other than to update the graphic display driver.

Thanks for posting with us.  I suggest try to start safe mode and see if it works correctly.  If Yes, then you can start using the "last known good configuration."   If in Safe Mode, you have the same problem, you should run chkdsk /r and sfc/scannow.  Here are the instructions for these suggestions.  Post back with the results.

  • My second monitor lost functions of the menu and the image.

Original title: monitors identified with reverse pilots

I upgraded my second monitor.  After loading the new driver for it, he was assigned to the old monitor and the new monitor is now the old driver.  Features on the old monitor do not work and I had to make the new monitor my primary monitor. It's ok but the old monitor lost functions of the menu and the picture is now crap.  Also, when I open PS it is said that the profile of the monitor is deffective. I ran the calibration software, but that did not fix it.

It looks like this: in the display settings, in the drop down menu below the pictures of the monitors, number 1, said SyncMaster 2443BWT on NVIDIA GeForce GT 9599.  Number 2, said SyncMaster digital S23A350H on NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT

This is backwards.  How can I get the correctly identified.  or is it important.

    Thanks for any help.

    Loïc

I ended up uninstalling the driver for the 23 "and disconnect.  This put the 24 "at number 1 and automatically back to the only driver left, 24".  Then restarted with the 23 '' reconnected.  It assigned the pilot generic and in fact number 2. Yes the 23 "works very well on the generic driver and I have the right driver for the 24" so I'll leave well enough alone...  I had downloaded the drivers from the monitor on the Samsung website according to the instructions on my cd that came with them.   I never thought to check the updates on my nvidia graphics card.

Thank you very much for this information.  I'll do this and keep my fingers crossed he doesn't mess up something else.  This Vista is so tempermental.

I apologize if I chose the wrong forum for this.    HP Pavilion P6610f Windows 7 family Ed Office.  Internet Wi - Fi of 64-bit (Qwest DSL) middle of experience in technical (I think).  Windows Defender No Windows Live Security Essentials yet, (oops!)  When I signed out of AOL and returned to my desktop, the taskbar, start icon and menu start would not appear.  I tried CTRL + ALT DELETE, to try to find out if a program is interfering, (nothing was running) could not arrested except to do it manually, so I did and pressed conitnually f8 when starting upwards.  I tried 'last best configuration' (did not help) went to HP Support Assistant, ((Heureusement, la barre de HP advisor était en haut de mon écran de bureau) I tried all diagnostic & troubleshooting steps HP Support Assistant.) When I tried to go to Windows Explorer from there, or attempted to open the configuration of my system, he kept saying that the (HAPSLC) (or something close) leave work and he wanted to know why, but never did. I tried it 4 times.  I was hoping to reset back a few days but could not find a way to access this page. Scared to try something else. I did a factory reset on September 1, 2012. Have a record of system repair that was made in may 2012. I think that Windows was the installation of the updates at the time wherever I discovered that these things were not working.  You have any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.

  • JumpLists disabled; 'store and display of recently opened items in the Start Menu and the taskbar' is greyed out

My option 'store and display of recently opened items in the Start Menu and the taskbar' is grayed out. Are also grayed out any mention of "jumplists" system (i.e. the number of items to display in the jumplists). Have I inadvertently disabled this feature? If so, how can I return it?

    Hi, landonblaine:

When the option store and display recently opened items in the start menu and the taskbar is disabled and grayed out, it is a symptom that two Windows fonts are applied to your system.

Open the Publisher of the registry (Regedit.exe) and navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. If there is a registry that NoRecentDocsMenu value set to 1, delete it. If there is a registry that NoRecentDocsHistory value set to 1, remove it as well.

Repeat the same steps in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer registry key (it cannot exist).

Restart your computer and see if the problem is resolved. Microsoft MVP Windows Desktop Experience

original title: the start menu and taskbar does not appear.  IM on windows 7.  Any help please?

The start menu and taskbar does not appear.  IM on windows 7.  Any help please?

You can try to leave Explorer yourself.  Here's how:

    1. Press Ctrl-Shift-escape, which should open the Task Manager.
    2. On the file menu, choose new task.  Type explorer.exe and press ENTER.  The taskbar and the desktop should appear.

However, this is not a permanent solution.  My best advice to you would be to use the system restore to go back to one hour before the beginning of the question.  This restoration process takes about 2 minutes and will not lose one of your folders: it restores only the settings from the system to a point in time that you choose (you can 'come back' as little as a few hours or several weeks).

To do a test, follow the steps below.  I guess that you are unable to reach the taskbar for the following steps:

    1. Press Ctrl-Shift-escape, which should open the Task Manager.
    2. On the file menu, choose new task.  Type rstrui.exe (this name is for 'restore user interface').  When you click OK, the system restore should start.
    3. Through the system restore program, you will choose a time to come back. When you have completed the program, your computer will restart with the settings at this time.

Please let me know if it helps.

  • I changed my admin.password last night and the earlier my husband did a system restore on it. now it tells me wrong password

    original title: help please!

I have windows vista on my acer aspire 5517 I changed my admin.password last night and the earlier my husband did a system restore on it. now it tells me wrong password... I don't have a dics in it plese... I need help ASAP

Next time please post in a forum of Vista. This one is for Windows 7. But since you're here:

You can change your password to something that you remember another administrative user account. If you had only an administrative user account and you have forgotten the password, all is not lost. You can then follow the general recommendations for implementing user accounts in Vista that I will give you at the end of this post.

All this requires a certain level of computer skills. You know better and that take the machine to a competent local computer tech (not a type of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad place) is the best solution for you.

If you have an installation of Vista DVD (not a recovery DVDs), you can start the system with it. Select the default language, then select "repair your computer". Then select "Command Prompt". At the command prompt, type:

NET user administrator / Active: Yes [press Enter]
NET user [insert here the name of your user account] [insert the new password of user as 1234 here] [press Enter]

[Note: do not enter the brackets!]

Remove the installation DVD and restart the computer. Now, you will be able to connect to your user account by using the password that you set; for example, 1234.

If you do not have a Vista installation DVD (only have a recovery disk), the computer mftr. may have given you the option to repair Vista (not a system recovery!) system in the diagnostic menu. This menu of diagnosis is the same one where you can choose Safe Mode. Get to this menu by repeatedly pressing the F8 key as the computer starts. If you do not have this option, you can make a bootable Vista file repair DVD in this link:

    http://NeoSmart.net/blog/2008/Windows-Vista-recovery-disc-download/

Note: All the Neosmart recovery disk downloads are torrent files. There is a good explanation of the torrent on the site Web of Neosmart files. You will need a torrent asmuTorrent client to get the files. Torrent client will download the .iso file with which to create the bootable DVD. You will need to use third-party burning software such as Nero, Roxio or the free ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com ) to burn the image .iso image file, not in the form of data.

Once you have fixed things, log on to the additional administrative account you will be made by the suggestions below and disable the administrator account integrated yet for security reasons:

Start Orb > Search box > type: cmd
When cmd appears in the above results, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator" [OK]. Now, you will get the command prompt. At the command prompt, type:

NET user administrator / active: No. [Enter]

    Exit the command prompt.

General recommendations for creating users in Vista:

You absolutely don't want to have only one user account. As XP and all the other modern operating systems, Vista is a multi-user system with integrated system of accounts as default Administrator and comments. These accounts should be left alone because they are part of the structure of the operating system.

In particular, you do not want one account user with administrative privileges on Vista because the administrator account integrated (normally only used in emergencies) is disabled by default. If you use as an administrator for your daily work, and this account is corrupt, things will be difficult.  It is not impossible to activate the built-in administrator to rescue things, but there may be more that you want to do. Better not to put you in a bad situation at first.

The user account that is for your daily work must be a Standard user, with the extra administrative user (call it something like 'CompAdmin' or 'Tech' or similar) only it for elevation purposes. As a user Standard is recommended for security reasons and will help protect your computer against infections. After you have created "CompAdmin", connect to it and change your normal user account Standard. Then log on to your regular account.

If you want to go directly to the desktop and ignore the Welcome screen with the icons of the user accounts, you can do this:

Start Orb > Search box > type: netplwiz [Enter]
Click continue (or provide an administrator password) when you are prompted by UAC

Uncheck "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to connect automatically by clicking on the account you want to highlight and press OK. Enter the password for this user account (when it exists) when you are prompted. Leave blank if there is no password (null).

  • I have reset firefox and lost all bookmarks. No backups.

First of all I discovered I could no longer type a web address directly into the address bar and access a site. Then, on the advice of online support, I reset Firefox, and the result was that I lost all my favorites. I tried backup to a recovery point, but it was not good. Help!

For best results, I wouldn't use Windows System Restore feature. This can lead to mixed files that do not work well together...

You're low space by chance? Reset feature duplicates a lot of data and sometimes it does not end when the disk space.

Could you search for your old settings folder in the following two locations:

    • Windows desktop: the folder named "old data of Firefox.
    • Firefox profiles folder: copy the following text and paste it into the search box on the start menu, and then press ENTER:

      %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

You will certainly find your current (incomplete) record, but there is also an older file (old modified sense just before your reset).

If you find one of them, recover bookmarks, you can restore a backup by following the steps described in this article: restore bookmarks from a backup or move them to another computer. At the step where you choose file, point you Firefox in this profile folder everywhere where you found it, and then in the folder bookmarkbackups inside.

You can also save other settings of the folder. This article can help, or for more specific help post-return: recovery of data from an old profile.
