ThinkPad S230u - boot usb?

Hi all

just got a S230u w / I Win8 like laptop company. I need to install a Linux distribution for my work daily so (multi - boot?) but I can't find a way to boot from a flash drive / usb drive DVD (combination of the settings menu or bios to start typing...)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Marco

Hi all

Thanks for your help. Here's what it can be solved:

On laptops active UEFI, you can't really take control of the boot process (your?). Windows 8 - regardless of the BIOS UEFI/Legacy mode - allows to enter "Advanced" at the beginning of boot options by choosing "Advanced Boot" in settings-> general menu (at the bottom of the list, just because it is "Advanced"...).

A screen is displayed with options for the USB FDD, CDROM etc the boot options and then choosing one of them - I've only tried USB FDD - PC gives you the "press Enter to advanced startup options" (sort of) to early start. Then you are presented with a list of options (F1-> the settings of the BIOS, F12-> choice of starter etc..)

It is the only way to get control of the startup procedure. May there is more, I just found this one.

Best regards

Marco

  • Windows 7 64-bit UEFI boot USB

    Hello

yesterday, I received my new PC. There are asus z87 gryphon UEFI BIOS ver 1707. I was assembled and tested before delivery for me. a test of the operating system was installed for testing and then removed before I got it. I bought this version of win 7: http://pro-jex.de/shop2/Windows-7-Professional-64-Bit-OEM-Vollversion-Betriebssystem-SP1

It's a win 7 64 bit dell OEM. now, I couldn't install it, I only got to the step "expand windows files" and then it will fail with the error code. 0 x 80070017 the dvd is damaged. the dvd looks like it has stripes and used before. but I have the key that should be enough to activate and register windows 7.

After that I tried to do a dvd on my laptop with Ultraiso image but I got stuck and always frozen at 75%.

so I tried to install an ISO image file from digital river. I was able to install a version of windows 7 32 bit on my new PC with a USB boot. I used the windows 7 usb/dvd tool, but now when I try to do the same thing with a win 7 64-bit, the tool says 'invalid ISO file. I found all sorts of things about how I can't make a boot usb for a 64 bit OS form a 32 bit OS. and also is that I have a UEFI bios, it seems that I must examine a few extra points with this kind of bios.

can someone please give me a step by step guide what to do. I want to install windows 7 Professional 64 bit on my new PC. and like I said my purchased OEM dvd seems to be corrupted, BUT I have the key to activate by phone. Wrap:

currently has new PC: windows 7 32-bit professional.

USB drive 8 GB (which I used to install win7 32bits)

It works now and btw the dvd is not hacked, the key that comes with it works. but you must activate by phone because it is an OEM version.

  • Why do I need a memory NVRAM reset after boot USB?

Sometimes, I want to test another version of OS X on an external USB drive. I can attach the disc, choose as a boot volume and restart. This part works fine.

If I want to go back in the same way (choose the internal drive as the boot volume and reboot), it does not. What I usually see is a slow progress bar, which finally ends with the Recovery Wizard. Motorcycle boots never the internal drive.

The only way to recover is to unplug the USB drive and reset the NVRM. Then the Mac boots again normally from disk internal, until I restart all restarting on the external drive.

The Mac is a Mac Mini 2012 with the original disc of fusion installed. The internal drive is encrypted, but I had the same problem exactly one year before running Yosemite and try to El Capitan. The drive was not encrypted. Also, I used another external drive.

Did anyone see similar questions? Is there any solution for this?

    There are two ways:

Hold the option key at startup to select the startup disk

While  initialized and running > System Preferences > Start up disc and unlock the padlock to select or re - select your startup disk. Lock the padlock

Before you start a lengthy discussion: what NB you have exactly? Toshiba has released different models of NB and it would therefore be important to know which model you have.

And why you have updated the BIOS?

  • Satellite U840-111 - Boot USB option not seen unless

With the help of the Ultrabook I have prepared an "emergency" Ubuntu USB boot image (LinuxLive used to transfer a .iso downloaded to a USB device) on an SD card in a USB - SD adapter (the map is to a USB port, not the SD slot).

    It worked well.

But when I restart the Ultrabook using F12 to see the Start Menu there is no text next to the USB option in the start menu (and if I select the boot option I see Windows start as usual).

If I select the option in the Bios on the F12 boot menu to go to the Boot menu in the BIOS I still don't see any text on the USB line.

If now, I re - feed and use F12 I now see "Mass Storage Device" (or something equivalent, can't remember) on the port USB line and the machine now boot Ubuntu on it (and I can see the file system on the hard drive).

As far as I know, you need to enter the BIOS Setup, but do nothing) before using the F12 boot menu if you want to start on a USB (well this one at least).

This seems to be a bug in the BIOS? BIOS version is 1.4

Not quite sure if it s a bug or not.

To my knowledge, the USB boot option to flinch F12 menu until a USB compatible and put up-to-date device should be plugged.
This means that you must connect a bootable USB device to the laptop and then power the device and press F12 to get the menu.

I also read that all the devices can be fully compatible so it would be really interesting to know if the same question is displayed using a bootable USB flash memory key you've tried a combination of USB SD adapter I could be possible that it is the problem here.

I couldn't find an option to boot from USB on my

    HP Pavilion dv7-4173us laptop BIOS.

How to enable boot from the USB port?

    Thank you.

    Hey hpng,

I am pleased to hear that the option is now available. When you set up a dual boot with Linux, I have very little information on how to do it. The only thing I would say, is to read the document "frequently asked Questions (FAQ) on Linux". It has a lot of frequently asked questions, but the main reason is, to the bottom of the page you will see an option to where I can find more information about Linux.

Depending on what version of Linux you want to install, I suggest you post your question on the Linux community.

    I hope this helps!

  • How to configure the BIOS to boot USB on Satellite A50-110?

    Hello.
I own a Toshiba Satellite A50-110 and I have a USB bootable Flash drive, but I don't know how to boot from the USB key.
I guess I need to access and configure the BIOS. How can I do? Where can I get information on this subject? What are the steps to perform this task?

    TIA

    Hello

As far as I know in the BIOS cannot be configured anything. As much as I now on this old notebook you can use just USB floppy for boot drive (U key at startup), but not the USB flash drive.

Enter BIOS settings with the ESC key at first upward and check that all listed bootable devices.

    Hey there!

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A place where you can find solutions for your problems with the help of the community!

I understand that you can not boot from USB.

Try a few steps recommended below.

    A. Click Start in the search box type CMD.

Right click on command prompt and select run as administrator

Run diskpart utility by typing diskpart in the command prompt window and press "Enter."

Find your USB drive disk number by typing disk list. We assume that the USB drive is 1.

    Run the following commands:

    Select disk 1

    clean

    create the primary partition

    Select partition 1

    assets

    format fs = NTFS

    Assign

    output

Now, we have prepared a USB drive. Let's make it bootable:

Insert the 32/64-bit installation disk in the Windows 7 DVD drive. Assume that it is D

    Go to D:\boot (cd d:\boot)

If your USB drive letter is "e" Please run bootsect/nt60 e:

Copy Windows 7 DVD multimedia content in root USB (etc. do not put in any folder) folder

You are now ready to install Windows 7 from a USB key!

    B. you said that you are unable to boot from a flash drive on 840 G2.

Turn on your computer, keep tapping key F10.

You will start in the BIOS change the inheritance of secure boot startup option.

Save the changes and exit the BIOS.

You should be able to boot from the flash player now.

Let me know how it goes!

    Have a great day!

  • Satellite A200 - need help with boot USB

    Hi all,

I have a starting problem with my Satellite A200.
I boot from my USB. It is bootable Linux to install the tutorial is as follows:

Insert the USB key or drive you want to boot from.
    Restart the computer.
During startup, when prompted, press the appropriate button to display the Options of 'starting' Usually this is F2, F8 or F12 (displayed on the splash screen).
In the boot menu, select the drive to boot from.

The computer will now boot from the USB key or the first disc to change the priority of booting back to boot from the hard drive. Perform the procedure again, but to choose the hard disk in step 4 the computer will now start from the first hard drive.

My share of any move to the right when it restarts with the connected USB still frozen and Toshiba screen but it does not load anything.

F2 I want to access the BIOS it makes me wait, but nothing happens. I'm nothing like 1 HR wait for selections of F12 boot except that all the boot are marked exceptions for the FDD, one on which I want to start.

I find myself facing a dead end because Toshiba loads must be connected to anything which is silly because I want to start on my key.

    If anyone has a solution...

    Hello

Please unplug your USB and start your laptop to see if everything is OK.
    Test with:

F2 - to enter the BIOS settings
F8 to display the advanced startup options
F12 - to access the start menu

If possible, try to enter the BIOS settings and set it to default settings.

After that restart your laptop and use F12 to get into the boot menu. When the boot menu appears to put the USB into the USB port, choose USB as a boot device and press ENTER.

But the first step is to check if you can get into the BIOS and change the default settings.

  • Boot USB drive

Good then this summer I messed up my macbook pro (don't remember the version etc because I bought it used). in any case, I removed my boot on a crash drive after that a representative was trying to help me. Now my macbook starts just to a screen with an exclamation mark and a folder. I read that I can use a usb key and reinstall OS x lion on it so I'll be able to boot my macbook. I was just wondering if I install it to the USB I have will continue to use the usb whenever I want to get my macbook?

If you're an installer of the USB or clone the operating system installed on the internal drive.

If you do manually put on the internal drive, Yes.

  • Pavilion Sleekbook 15 will display the menu boot usb. Restarts continuously.

    Hello

I have a HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15 (model: 15-b022es) in which I am tryig to install Linux.

Since the day that I bought it, I was unable to boot anything directly via USB. I searched a lot on this subject, and the usual causes are order secure boot devices to boot, or Legacy Support options. This certainly isn't the case, since I tried all possible combinations. In fact, the exact symptoms that presents my laptop are not described anywhere I've found. What is:

If I insert a USB drive into any port of the laptop, it makes the computer completely unable to boot. It is not that it freezes, it restarts again and again, but never goes beyond a black screen and make a few sounds HDD (usual start of sounds, nothing weird). In this State, with again inserted USB, I can access the configuration of the BIOS by pressing F10, but can't access devices (usually available at F9) Start menu, because pressing F9 just causes a new reboot.

In the past I've accessed the start menu do not insert any USB and then pressing F9 then I walked into the USB port, entered and left some folder random to force a refresh of the display (and therefore show the USB) and finally selected my USB. It's a bit hacky and I can cease to apply this solution, as my HARD drive is now cleared and there is no file I can enter to refresh the screen and display the USB.

Now the thing is: I can not install any operating system to my laptop if I can't boot from USB, so how can I do? For now, all I get are continuous resets the machine before you get to the boot menu.

And what is the cause of all these resets? Maybe if I go out, I can imagine a way around this problem.

Thanks for the quick reply, but this isn't the problem, I had already tried.

I can handle the start menu until I do not start the computer with a USB stick inserted. If I insert one, it will prevent F9 to enter the boot menu, causing the machine to restart again indefinitely.

However, after having tried everything I could think of (even different file formats in diferent USB drives and for different configurations of BIOS), I went paranoid and I tried with every USB that I have at home.

I was able to start successfully with a Toshiba 8 GB fat32-formatted USB key (I tried with other pendrives fat32).

So, finally, it seems to me that it is a bug in my computer EFI firmware. In the first place, the incomplatibility seems to be a bad transposition a standard on the side of various manufacturers of USB key or on the side of HP. But in any case, continuous restarts instead of an information on the error message (as happens for some other errors) seems to be a bug to me behavior.

  • X 240 Boot USB

Try to boot on the USB port on my X 240, but does not. I see my device in the boot menu, but when I select it, the white of the screen for a second then just brings back me to the start menu. I tried to change my BIOS settings (disabled USB UEFI support, disabled the USB 3.0 mode, disabled "Secure Boot", disabled the UEFI boot and enabled Legacy Boot) but the same results. Updated to the latest version of the BIOS (2.24) but same result. I am able to browse the content of USB media loading Windows on the machine. I've tried several different USB devices, none of them starts. All devices to boot on other Suggestions PCs.?

I ended up calling technical support on it. When I got them on the phone, the first thing we did was reset the BIOS to default settings to begin troubleshooting. However, no troubleshooting was necessary because after that, the laptop starts on the USB.

I suggest resetting the BIOS to default settings, then try to boot!

  • ThinkPad T410 boots only if the power supply is plugged

    Hello

I have a really strange bug. My thinkpad T410 (2537-UQF) with an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD boots only if the power supply is connected. If I have a full battery, and try to boot without the power I get a blue screen after about 60 seconds on the screen where the windows logo appears. I have Windows 7 installed fresh a few days ago.

I think its possible, I've done a few failure with drivers. The power management ThinkPad always stops working after startup. So I deleted the program using the feature "msconfig".

I'm not really sure what I can do about it. Any idea?

Thanks for any answers in advance & regards

    Rain

    OK I solved the problem:

The workaround is to set to battery power settings in the BIOS to auto. If the power in the Bios settings are on maximum battery life, the system does not start if you use the SSD OCZ Vertex 3.

Hope this helps everyone who has the same problem. I need 4 days to understand this.
