Time Machine acting strange

iMac - Mountain Lion 10.8.5

Since the last backup with time machine, I just added a few Photos to my iPhoto Library (1.4 MB) and made very few minor changes to certain documents. The next backup should have been more than 50 MB. Instead, Time Machine backup and backup. He went about like this:

backup of 4 MB to 5 MB

12 MB to 16 MB

30 MB to 40 MB memory

1 GB 2 GB

and so it went upward and upward. I stopped the backup when she went from 14 GB to 16 GB of backup.

What could it maybe be back up?

Until the backup is started, I had just deleted multiple iPhoto libraries starting from Time Machine backups. Could it be, this time Machine tries to reconstruct those yet? I thought that when you delete something of Time Machine, it is permanently deleted.

Hi, how do you delete things,™, in the Finder or™?

Start the restore Partition holding CMD + r to start, use disk Utillity to repair two discs... any change after a normal start then?

    Hello

After having passed my MacBook Pro to El Capitan, I tried the same thing with my Mac Mini (mid 2011).

Has not completely, because the system is stuck on the gray screen with the bar locked (10 hours) in advance. Impossible to get on this screen (sometimes P - ram reset restart, try Mode safe without success), I decided to return to Yosemite using my full time Machine backup.

This operation was successful, but with a few strange things:

    • Normally, my system language is set to French. But at startup (i.e. asking the password), the system speaks English. It's extremely confusing, because the layout of the keyboard is also different (for example, the first key of the letter is 'Q', where on a French keyboard the first key is 'A', other differences of keyboard also). Once a user is logged on, the system returns itself to the lay-out French!
    • The new pit of backup Time Machine does not start. It remains suspended in the "preparation of files for backup" (= free translation).

Repair permissions and restart didn't help.

  • behavior strange time machine

    This is not a complaint.

About once a week, I get a message that does not have a time machine backup.  I could solve the problem by rebooting the system.

About 4 days ago I got a time backup failure message. I rebooted the system, but not 'Back Up Now'.  I thought that the time machine disk was gone and had to be replaced.

Then, miraculously, time machine started working!  With the new backups in progress.

    Two sets of questions:

    1. is anyone else seen this happen?  If so, what ended up happening?

    2. any advice?  I've never used time machine to recover a version of a file that I've trashed, only to do a full system restore, after that I had a system failure.

    Thank you.

  • Strange behavior of Time machine

One day when nothing much was going on my system, time machine has failed.  I got the error message:

"Time Machine could not complete the backup"Backups Time Machine".

The backup drive ran out of unexpected place. Time Machine will try to make more space by eliminating backups expired during the next scheduled backup.

Open Time Machine preferences to select a bigger backup disk or make the smaller backup by excluding files. »

I don't want to exclude the files.  Once, I dropped my mac (stupid human tricks).  The mac was irreparable, and I was able to restore the latest mac with Time Machine.  Because I would like to be able to do a complete system restore, I don't want to exclude the files.  I don't want to make a larger capacity disk.

My Macintosh HD is 500 GB on which 294 GB are available.  In other words, 206 GB are used.  My time machine drive is 1 TB.

The backup failed was 48 GB.

    A few questions:

    1. How do I need to make a backup of 48 GB (23% of my system) when nothing much was going on my system?

2 is it possible for a lot more free space on the disk, Time Machine?

  • Time Machine blocked preparation backup

    Hi community

Time Machine, I get the iMac to backup, Time Capsule 371 GB of the preparation phase of backup available 998 GB for one eternity, as others have reported.

My system is an iMac (27-inch, late 2009), processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory with an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB video card and a physical disk internal 1 TB ST31000528AS Sata media.

My last backup was September 16, 2016 @ 1257 GMT and my software was the last version of El Capitan.  (I backup to another external HARD drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner and backup guru Mac unfortunately I don't have a big enough other ext HDD to run a time Machine backup to as well).

When the TC is connected I can see the iMac and iMac.sparsebundle backup folder and when I enter the time Machine I can see the chronology running back from 16 Sep and it allows me to access the files in the folders.  So, I guess that the disk HARD of TC is OK.

Software changes have been: 1 MS a copy of CCleaner Free 1.14.451, 2 Ms Security Update 2016-001, 13 Sep Adobe Flash, 14 Sep 12.5.1, 16 Sep Digital Camera RAW compatibility update iTunes.  Never had a problem before with these downloads.  Safari updated September 20, then to Sierra 22 Sep having saved first using the CCC and MBG.

Through the various pages of help through Google.  Follow-up advice given to reset the SMC and the PRAM, deleted Sophos home and com.apple.TimeMachine.plist and com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.lockfile.

Rebooted and restarted the iMac and Time Capsule several times, done many backups check the reset even the time Capsule disk, but all without success.

I'm still stuck in preparation of backup when I reselect the backup drive.

    Can someone help please?

Finally, I had a problem in 2014 when Apple recalled the iMac to a HARD drive replacement program.  This was successful, but a few days later the Time Machine and time Capsule would not save.  This is due to the component change when the UUID was different.  The advice I would have given were to know how inherit backup and controls disk associated within the Terminal. Stupidly, I started again when the TC asked me to and then discovered the Terminal commands a few days later.  The loss of backups of 4 years was no big problem, so I suppose that if I have to, I won't again unless a member of the smart community can better advise me please?

    Good community

I forgot to tell you that I save on a Capsule of 1 GB bought in 2010 with the iMac.

Don't know how, but not before I finished posting my above query Time Machine kicked back in action and performed a backup pick up all the changes, about 50 GB since Sept. 16.

He did once again this morning, so I'm sorry I can't post what Time Machine and my Time Capsule due action to act properly.

  • How can I restore mac Time machine backup to most recent?

So, I recently met several problems with my old mac. He started acting upward with the blinking folder and question mark more often. So I did multiple time machine backups and have since then tried to reinstall the OS and many other options, but it looks like my mac middle of 2007 has had its day. So I bought a new mac and tried to restore the back upward on the external hard drive. I get the message that his back is an older version and it cannot be restored and I should use from the other mac migration assistant.

So the question is: If the first mac is burned and I can not restore settings etc of the time external hard disk machine, how to restore the whole upward? Can I transfer files only?

    Very much appreciated.

    Hi Sir,

You cannot restore data in time machine just like that. You use the data transfer assistant to recover your old records to your new Mac.

The data that you used time machine made to your old mac are not available to your new mac. There is limitation of the system.

    Hope this could help you.

  • calculation of the space of time machine

I'm not to give lectures on safeguards. Before yesterday I made a backup on a disk IDE 80 GB about 2 years ago, and I got my MBP since I bought it in mid-2009. Recently, I tried a new backup on the same drive, but my data were passed to about 150 GB, so TM reported that there was not enough space. This is why I bought a 250 GB SATA drive and started the backup. TM was told he had 150 GB for backup and that it would take about 5 hours. In an hour or two it was over and the amount of space occupied on the SATA was just below 80 Gb. Strange - I think - but everything seemed ok. I used the disk utility to check the SATA and he said it was ok. Then, I connected the HDD IDE 80 GB, erased all the data and set as the backup in MT and Mt finally told me that he had 150 GB for backup and the 80 GB drive has been insufficient. What is going on? Is it possible that I can check that the SATA drive contains a full backup? (Note that I did not exclude anything to save.)

I've seen similar and I suspect the backup that you did on the largest disk is correct. Time Machine backup of data, applications and operating system, but there are a lot of things, he's not back until - caches, mobile backups and other files of the operating system or applications can recreate. Algorithm of TM to estimate the amount of space required does not appear, however, to take into account the files, it won't save.

I just configured my LaCie 5big Network2 act as a time Machine, but it is not back up correctly. When I run it always freezes at 14.70GB/237.71GB, even after deleting the backup and starting up again. I don't know if it of related or not, but the Console is littered with the same error messages (even if Time Machine is not running):

If I stop the backup and restart it, it will get stuck after 7KB. If I delete the backup and starting a new one, it will get stuck at 14,70 Go again. This could be the cause? The NAS is configured correctly and firmware is up to date, disks are operational and functioning perfectly.

  • Time Machine periodically tells me it has not saved in two weeks

I have an iMac and a time Capsule, which are the only three months old. For the most part, they work together seamlessly to provide backups Time Machine. However, twice now, even though I know that I had regular hourly Time Machine backups, my computer informs me that Time Machine has not backed up in two weeks. And no backup is available. Time Machine then immediately starts a backup on my Time Capsule that takes a few hours. Once that ends, everything is back to normal, and my story any backup is available for me that this is supposed to be. And resume regular backups as usual.

What happens here? Is there anything I should do? Or stop doing? I'd appreciate any comments on this subject.

The problem is the reliability of the system network Apple is not particularly good.

Is the Mac directly related to TB by ethernet or wireless?

Is the TC the main router of the network so this is to distribute IP addresses?

The strange thing is that the internet still works, but the computer has lost the TC disk location and knows not where to find it again.

For reliable TM backups on an iMac, I highly recommend using the USB... self powered 2.5 "1 TB or 2 TB drive can be connected behind the mac and invisible to the world... who will be always available for the local system... While his brother of network in the TC will fluctuate in and out of existence.

  • I can't get my new WD external hard drive to work with Time Machine.

My Seagate 1 TB external hard drive, connected to my Airport Extreme, use the USB port, was completed (it stores up to 3 1 iMac and MBP), so I bought a Western Digital 2 TB hard drive to replace it. I formatted correctly, connected to my MBP, then connected to the Airport Extreme. When I opened the time Machine, it didn't appear. By selecting "Set up the new TimeCapsule" open Airport utility. By clicking on the router button gave me change. By clicking on the "Record" button showed my new hard drive. The "setup" button is grayed out, unless I unchecked and double-checked all of the options. He warned me that I would be offline for a while, but it did nothing; My wife MBP and MBP my son not a never lose their connection to the internet, and I lose mine, either.

My Mac guy, who never met a problem he couldn't fix it, is puzzled. So I am. We tried all the usual ideas, restart my MBP, restart the Airport Extreme, reformat the external hard drive, with different numbers of partitions (and Yes, I chose the GUID), but we can not simply Time Machine to connect with the hard drive. It is a Western Digital My Passport Ultra. This external hard drive is not compatible with Time Machine?

What version is your AE? Backup is supported only on the sector of Tower model.

You are self feeding Ultra Passport? It really must be external powered... or plugged into a powered hub.

My passport readers have been consistent in the past... but sometimes strange things... That is, they can change the USB chip without warning, resulting in questions. The USB hub can help.

There is also something... Plug the USB key into one of your computers and start backup TM on this... proceed very long... but we need to start... Cancel backup... and then plug it into AE and see what happens.

  • Change Time Machine backup

Time Machine and I never got along. Time and time again, I tried to turn it on, but it always ends up biting me in the... back.

This is how I have a disc that I had tried last to use as a Time Machine drive. Once more I gave (my different posts on these forums are prolly still out there proving my frustrations). But now, I met another problem. I'm establishing another backup strategy and all I want to do is get my stuff off the drive I was using. Well, guess what? (you prolly already know this) I'm not being allowed to edit the folder Backups.backupdb in any way, shape, or form. I can't drag something out of it, I can't rename anything; I can't trash anything. I tried to "deselect" this drive as the TM drive to see if that would allow alterations, but I couldn't find a way to do it.

Although, no, this is not quite true. I CAN drag things from her on my system drive, but my SSD, basically, 500 GB cannot accommodate all at once. I have to go pieces transfer ten ad THOSE before I can move on. But above all I want pictures and videos from the TM drive and those, of course, are the biggest.

A strange thing that happened that I did drag the Backups.backupds folder on an external one and, surprisingly, has begun to transfer things. But he got about 2/3 of the way through with it and then stopped. as if to say, "oh, wait, I'm not supposed to be allowing this.» So now I have this folder Backups.backupdb partial to this external one, similarly, can I do anything with! Just like the real TM reader, I can't change anything on/in it. And I can't get rid of it!

What the heck can I do about it? TM drive has stuff on it that I have anywhere else.

Oh, another thing. I tried to go "back in time" as TM was supposed to do, and I told myself I am not able to access any Time Machine drive. WHAT is everything?

Start with B5 and B6 in the 1st article linked.

    Troubleshooting of Time Machine

Solving the problems of Time Machine

  • As a Time Machine backup, it keeps adding to the size of the backup?

TM starts the backup and starts suddenly to add to the size of the backup, it will do. This means that no player will never be large enough to accommodate the backup because it keeps growing in size (as each block of data is added, the size of the backup continues expansion of the same amount). I have attached 2 screenshots showing what has happened in the minute to restart the backup. TM is backup on an external WD hard drive via the USB-3 port on my MacBook Pro (retina, 15 inches, end of 2013). 1.9 TB of data backup - there should not be a problem because the external hard drive has 3 TB of space and has been freshly formatted before being used for the first backup on this drive. As you can see from the screenshots, the backup is much larger than it should be.

    1 minute later screenshot:

Before this behavior, I have had problems with Time Machine while using another backup drive (a drive LaCie Quadra) with for example, ignored backups, backups landed at calculation time, backups, partially blocked by a backup for more than 36 hours etc., error messages from read-only TM etc... I tried several solutions on this forum and none seem to have corrected these strange behaviors. It felt like I've solved a problem, shortly after another was about to begin.

I stopped finally try the solutions suggested here in the forums, as well as some external sites such as Pondini and chose to use another drive (HD freshly cleared using disk utility - the WD drive that is currently attached to the MBP). The WD external drive worked well on the Mac Pro in the office, and I have no reason to suspect that this is the problem (I ran some tests after erasing it and there is no error reported).

Well, the first symptom that something still was wrong was when backing up to disk WD has slowed to a crawl yesterday afternoon, but I left it on overnight. At noon today the backup was still running, but about ⅔ complete (very, very slowly - running data blocks are moving into very small pieces), but I have to bring the MBP to a meeting and everything stop. Then my back and everything by plugging, TM started upward and all seemed well, until I noticed that the backup data was almost 2.5 to. I restarted the MBP. It's once again, I noticed that Time Machine did not work as I expected. The size of the backup continues to expand... I was expecting TM that she had about 250 GB left to save, but as see you from the screenshots it much much smaller than that. I have let it run like that for about 2 hours, hoping that it was just a small mistake, but the HD continues to fill, only 185 GB of space left. Strangely, I can enter TM and see my data.

    Suggestions please? Very much appreciated.

    Stu

Nobody answered, so I thought I'd share the temporary solution I came up with.

I started in safe mode, deleted the backup external TM drive I was using and launched a full backup with TM (always in safe mode). I leave TM turn all night and a full backup has been completed. I rebooted, entered TM and restore some files to confirm that I was actually able to restore the backup pieces. Since that time, I did have problems with TM make scheduled backups, with one reading errors etc.

I will continue to spend some time to know what triggered these questions... since I was able to make a backup in safe mode, this means that I have other avenues to explore.

I will report back if I find anything.

  • How to restore mail using Time Machine data

Sunday my iMac that runs 10.8.5, had problems with Apple Mail. Email correctly loaded at 7:30 and was fine, but at 6:30 I opened the program to retrieve e-mail. The program crashed. I restarted the program and it quickly crashed again. After a 3rd reboot it crashed again. I restarted the iMac and when I tried to start the Mail, he acted as I've been setting up Apple Mail for the first time, wanting my e-mail address and password.

I thought there is a data file that creates that so corrupted Mail, you can go back in time Machine and restore it. OSX does not allow me to change the Mail or restore from Time Machine, it gives me an error message that Mail is part of the OSX system and cannot be changed.  I have 5 email accounts that keeps track of the mail and so far it has only one account setup. I would like to restore all the email accounts to backup Saturday night before all this started.

Is there a way to do this? Any thoughts on this is appreciated.

    John boubacar diallo

Make a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

    Quit the application.

In Finder and hold the option/alt key while clicking on the menu item Go. Select the library. Then go to the Mail folder. Enter Time Machine and restore this file.

If this does not work, there are additional e-mail folders in Library/Application Support, covers and containers.

  • ReadyNASOS 6.5.0 (RC1): backups Time Machine "gone".

Somethine strange happened after the RC1 update (I assume it's related, because I can't find any other "even major", but maybe it's just a bug OS6 OR something I did not understand)

The time machine backups are moved from the admin. I use 3 accounts to manage 3 private time Machine and...

The NAS can't. Fun fact: the Time Machine work well, accounts are fine, so I don't know why, it's like this... I don't see all the TM in the admin, maybe I missed something. In any case, I thought that maybe it's a bug, so I'm reporting the issue.

If you add with the appropriate storage, they show back up under time-machine.

It happened to me several times. Will affect your backups, or anything like that. They disappear just for one reason, but they are still obviously there and working. Just add back in the accounts, and they will appear and display the amount of data is used and all that good stuff.
