What happens if you connect your laptop HARD drive, you don't see that Windows installs the drivers for the new USB device or do you have an error message?   I agree that it is unlikely to have failed on the first use. Most likely, it is a problem with the SMART attributes. IIRC sandisk can't CHIP for this product so it formats without error, and data can be copied onto the discs with success, I wouldn't worry too much on this subject.
