Unknown device - USB 2.0

I'm running Windows XP SP3 and my external hard drive (Western Digital My Passport Essential) now generates an error "Unknown device" when it is plugged.  I get the same error no matter what USB port I use - front or back of the PC.  I ran all the updates of Windows.  The device worked for almost a year on this PC and is always recognized when I plug it into my laptop which is running Windows 7.  How to fix "unknown device" on the PC? "

Yes - your system restore points are corrupted or something like that.  To have up to 90 days back leads me to believe your system restore settings are a bit on the big side (which can cause problems like that.)

Unfortunately, if SFC/scannow has not set and you already have the most recent driver (so you went to web map page motherboard chipset manufacturer, downloaded directly, there ran and installed on you anyway?), then you may be able to fix it with a repair installation (since it is Windows XP) * if * you have the installation media * and * this installation media has SP3 integrated in it?

In addition, it is possible that your USB ports are flakey.

  • "Unknown device" USB Barcode scanner, problem with the USB controller driver?

    Hello

I need assistance with our Barcode Scanners that doesn't work on our newly purchased computers at HP with Windows7 Pro x 64 operating systems.

The brand and model of the bar code scanner is:

    Datalogic Heron D130 USB.

When you connect the scanner to a USB port, Windows will try to install this as a HID, but it takes an unusually long time, about 7-8 seconds, to boot the device and install the drivers and appears as an unknown device in windows "devices and printers" and the hand scanner does not work.

Sometimes when you move the USB back can I sometimes the scanner at hand to be recognized as an HID device or a Datalogic barcode scanner,

It works fine until you restart the computer.

After restart the computer cannot detect the scanner Barcode correctly without re - appears as unknown device.

I suspect that there is a compatibility problem between barcode scanner and card USB controller on the computers.

I tried to update all the drivers available on the website www.hp.com and same www.Intel.com (chipset drivers) but nothing has helped to solve this problem

Tried newly bought barcode scanners and "used" barcode scanners earlier who works on other computers, but the problem remains.

I found a workaround by connection of bar codes in a USB hub, and then plug the USB hub to the computer.  And leave the USB - hub to take care of the communication with the Barcode Scanner.

in this case, it takes about 2 seconds for the code scanner barcode to mount correctly in windows under the heading "devices and printers" and then works perfectly, even after a reboot.

I googled after a response after my problem, but it seems I'm the only one who experience this issue. ?!

Bought more than 40 computers that I have this problem.

These were bought at different times with two different for suppliers

    Computer model are the following

    HP ProDesk 1 400 P/N5S21EA

    Specifikations:

Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong and how to fix it?

    Thanks in advance

    Hello

The problem is not power - related.

We use passive USB hubs that solves the problemon these computers.

(it also works with the docks, or if you EliteDisplay E241 HP as we thers a usb hub 2 ports inbulit in monitor that works.)

The problem lies in the incompatibility between the Intel USB controller and the hand scanner, can be connected to USB 3.0

When you let another usb-controller support in handshakeing (such as a usb hub), it works.

Datalogic or Intel would like to acknowledge this error.

Because none of the big companies want to acknowledge the problem or repair, personally chose to switch to an AMD platform / CPU instead of the Intel and now it works fine!

We get more performance for your money when AMD is usually less expensive to purchase.

And because of the poor of Datalogic press where they don't even answer e-mail (their only channel for support)

I chose to stop using their products. I'm going to use another provider / brand of barcodescanners.

    Hey again,
I thought then that I was here anyway I could ask this too.
The tecra S2 has 3 USB ports, they all work very well for my USB mouse and other small things like the wacom tablet...
But when I plug my external hard drive in two of them, it says that it is an unknown device...

    I think, but am not sure, that this might have something to do with something once, we had to do in school;
We had once set up a pilot for a small converted Converter a series (or parallel, cant he recall) cable to the usb port
(I have already uninstalled the drivers but nothing has changed)

    It's just a guess...

any idea on how to solve this little problem? : p

    Hello

You said external USB HDD appears as an unknown device on two of the three USB ports.
What appears if you connect the HARD drive to the USB port on third?
It appears as an unknown device or what?

The device usually appears as an unknown device in device because manager not installed device drivers.
I check the HARD disk for the drivers and try to install it again.

  • Satellite A500 USB problem - unknown device.

    Hello

Have a Satellite A500 I recently restored to factory from the recovery partition and reinstalled my Win7 upgrade.

I have a couple of unknown devices in Device Manager and have no way of knowing what they are.
They would normally be a problem for me except that I'm also the sounds of disconnecting USB every now and then and caveats relating to the devices being plugged into a port USB2 not high speed.

I have of course plugged anything in time so I expect there is a device which is malfunctioning and not detected correctly.

The devices I first suspected (webcam, TV Tuner, touchpad) all normally appear in Device Manager so I'm at a loss as to what is the cause.

    Any ideas?

    Hello

    I understand this correctly?

You restored the A500 to the factory settings using the Toshiba recovery procedure and the unknown devices still shows up in the Device Manager?

That s strange because the recovery disk to put the laptop in the same State as on the first day of purchase. So generally unknown devices should not appear and all drivers must be installed correctly.

However, I found an interesting and in my eyes useful HowTo document that should help you to know which drivers are missing in your case.

    Hi malsnano,

I see that usb devices do not work on xp. I'll help you with this problem.

    1. What is the brand and model of the computer?

    2. what security software is installed on the computer?

    3. have you made changes on the computer recently?

4 is the issue limited to these usb devices?

    Method 1:

Run the fixit from Microsoft Fixit article and if that helps.

Hardware devices do not work or are not detected in Windows:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems/en-us

    M odes 2:

Put the computer in a clean boot state, then check if that helps.

How to solve the problem by performing a clean boot state:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Once you have completed troubleshooting, perform the steps in step 3: to reset the computer as usual.

    Method 3.

Run a full scan of the computer with the Microsoft Safety Scanner to make sure that the computer is virus-free.

    Microsoft safety scanner: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Warning of Security Scanner: there could be a loss of data while performing an analysis using the Microsoft safety scanner to eliminate viruses as appropriate.

    Method 4.

You can disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

    1. click on start and then click Control Panel.
    2. click on system and Maintenance, click System, and then click Device Manager.
Note that if control panel is in Classic view, double-click System and then click on Device Manager.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on allow.
    3. in Device Manager, double-click to expand the "USB Bus controllers", right click on the controller host, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
Check that if at all, there is an exclamation point on the pilot, it suggests problems with the installed driver.
    4. Repeat step 2 to uninstall all items under 'USB Bus controllers'.
Then, restart the computer and Windows XP will automatically reinstall all USB controllers.

  • 802.11 wireless pen drive recognized as 'unknown device' under USB. Help, please.

Specs: Windows XP Home Edition version 2002, Service Pack 2. This is the version of XP OEM. Processor Intel pentium 4 2.00 GHz. 1.50 GB of ram.

After an unknown incident (i suspect headphones usb), my wireless USB key has ceased to be recognized as such and become everything simply an "unknown device" under "USB bus controllers. Although windows tells me there is no drivers for the device installed, the wireless pen drive is signed with the Publisher of Microsoft Windows with a version of driver 5.1.2600.0, Microsoft being the driver provider.

Compound number, the 802.11 device is listed under "Other devices" when 'show hidden devices' is selected and the variable "devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" entered "environment variables", but is washed out-showing that the system thinks that the device is not currently connected to the computer. In addition, under details, it displays error code 45: the device is not connected to the computer. And it is. It's very hip. as cement and connected tape.

I plugged the wireless key USB in all the usb ports on the computer, every time with her recognized as 'unknown device' under usb controllers. I entered in the safe mode, uninstalled all the usb controllers and root usb hub drivers and let windows the respawn after reboot in order to solve the problem. No dice.

I also plugged the USB in a different desktop and it works like a charm, so the issue is not with the hardware.

Clearly there that a conflict with drivers/registry/God knows what, but I'm at a loss. Somehow, windows has taken its decision and the player associated with "unknown device" and I see no way to make the system "forget" that the USB was never connected. How can I remove the ghost driver "unknown device" manually or force windows to re-associate the key wireless USB with "other devices" (with the yellow? mark) and not this useless usb driver "unknown device"?
