Unpresenting a LUN in ESXi 5

I know that the appropriate procedure to remove a LUN of ESXi 5 is to disassemble the data store (what can I do for all hosts in the cluster at the same time), then detach the device in the storage SCSI host adapter Panel.  My question is, as the doc of VMware doesn't even mention this - is that I have to follow the procedure of posting on ALL my hosts in this cluster, or a fact?  If each of them (which seems unnecessary that VMware includes a way to dismantle all but not detached from the whole) is there a good way for this script?

Thank you!

Chris Fox

Hi cfox,.

You are right, for anyone a logic of one or more hosts ESXi 5 unit number, you must first remove and then head to the storage card and remove the appropriate device. Unfortunately the real detach process is on a per host-level, which means that you must do this for each unique host before unpresenting unit via the vSphre customer, if you choose to go through the user interface. My understanding is that the article will be updated in order to clarify the procedure. It is certainly a way to describe what it can be tedious if you need anyone a LUN of dozens of several hosts, I hope to be able to share the script that I wrote very soon with vSphere SDK for Perl to automate this process and a PowerCLI equivalent will be available.

I know that KB 1015084 talks unpresenting a LUN that contains a store of an ESX/ESXi 4.x host data without deleting the contents of the data store.

What is the proper procedure to remove LUNS if:

    (b) the SAN will have his replaced controllers (2012i G1 upgrade controllers of P2000 G3 MSA)?

If you have empty LUNS that you no longer use, simply remove them from your inventory. Once they have been removed from inventory, have your team of storage not present and remove zoning.  From there rescan your storage adapters to make sure you can't see the LUNS in question

  • Problems with masking the LUNS on ESXi 4.1

    Hello

Im trying to delete a data from a cluster of ESXi 4.1 store but I need to keep the information on here. I read the correct way to proceed is to use LUN masking and delete the data from the end of the storage store.

When I try to create the rule of the claim using the following command:

    esxcli corestorage claimrule add - rule 192 - location - A vmhba37-C t 0 t 0 L - 1 - P MASK_PATH

    I get the following error:

Errors: Extra noted arguments of the parameters at the end of the entry: "-'' 192' ' rule - you 'rent' '-has ' 'vmhba37' '-it '0' '-you '0' '-the '1' '-P' 'MASK_PATH'"

This happens on both hosts that I need to remove the data store of.

Anyone know how I can add the claimrule with success?

    Thank you

    Try using this: esxcli corestorage claimrule add -rule 192 t - slot - a vmhba37 - C 0 t 0, L - 1 Pei MASK_PATH

  • Stream access to the ISCSI LUNs on esxi v4

    Greetings,

Wonder just anyone could throw me some lights on it?

Esxi v4 does support stream access to a single lun? The reason behind this is I want to consolidate LUN based on roles (exch, file, etc.), that is to say, a lun (datastore) will host all the servers exch only running on different hosts.

    Thanks in advane.

    Hello

Yes No... multi host access to iscsi LUNs is possible... that's what san / storage isa he's shared on the subject. Just make sure that Suur iscsi luun u plan on using is in the list compatibilityy supported so that u get the support of vmware in the future if you need. ESX / ESXi have a clustered file system.

    Mr. VMware

You can ignore these alarms. They happen to me every time I do it. You have performed the proper procedure. Although I usually remove the LUN manually and do not let the detach operation to do. Also, if you use HA-check is not a heartbeat data store.

But the alarms are normal, worry not.

  • Presentation of vmfs LUNS 3.33 to Esxi 5.0.0,914586

  • Expansion of the existing space on LUN

I wanted to confirm that the following steps are still the best method to expand a LUN formatted with a single VMFS partition space and make sure that I don't have lack of someone who came up with a more elegant solution.

    1. create a new LUN with the space to require it.

    2. move all virtual machine hosted on LUNS with insufficient space for this new logic unit number.

3 anyone to the ESX host logical unit number and remove it from the storage device.

    Anyone using the following KB:

Unpresenting a LUN that contains a store of data from ESX 4.x and ESXi 4.x

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1015084

The increase in the VI client option creates a scope for the partition VMFS and scopes are a tool of the devil.

With vSphere 4 you can hot - develop the LUN on the storage, and then increase the size of it. This will not generate the extensions. I think that is much more elegant and I can say that it works with Clariion, Symmetrix and Equallogic, EVA (I saw it happen and no problem at all)

I think the installation is on local disks, but there a lot of LUN fc attached

should I disconnect all the fc LUNS before installing?

the DR I'm not confronted with this problem it is fast and the performance is excellent.

    I need a solution please

  • Present LUN storage

    Hello

Please let me know, what is the process to present the LUN of 256 in single ESXi host, I hired a few parameters to change... Is this true? If true, please share the steps.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

Please note that 256 LUNS by ESXi host is the maximum configuration in vSphere 5.1. This configuration is fully supported by VMware.

Somehow goes beyond this limit is not recommended and you could not get support if you have problems with this host in the furture.

  • How to create LUNS target the same data store?

In vnx5100, we created two partitions (MON) to be shared separately with 2 VM machines for clustering

The question here is, that I have assigned the size of the LUN to a new data storage. And when I created ROW for a virtual machine, I had to choose the target LUN, but I wasn't able to see the unit number logic I'm looking for (the one that I have allocated for the storage of data, I created).

    The question here is:

Why the logic unit number assigned to the storage is not displayed in the list?

Do we need to create a LUN for the data store and a separate LUN target in Vsphere with the same size of the LUN in VNX?

What is the target LUN in VMware (vsphere client)?

    Kind regards

To a RDM and VMFS data store, you must create/submit two LUNS for ESXi hosts. What is stored on the VMFS data store is only the RDM mapping file (this will be created at the time wherever you add the raw LUN to a virtual machine), who shows up with the size of the RDM LUN, but requires no available disk space on the data (as a few bytes) store.

  • Anyone ESXi storage

What is the best credential LUN that I could share with the storage team to get the good ONE of the battery of ESX Servers unpresneted. I have ESX 3.5 running in my farm.

You can determine this by different target values.  The vmhba2:2:48 translates hba2, target 2, lun 48.  The other is target 3.  Since the other LUNS are different sizes at each target, which should help storage administrator choose the one to delete.

If you are running 3.5 there is little risk in unpresenting a lun.  Make sure that there is no virtual configs machine (CD with ISO) or backup application or other 3rd party applications access or what causes host to access the lun.  3.5 handles ok, but the PSA architecture with 4.x and above can cause ODA condition.  Check the knowledge base for more details or just google unpresenting a lun in ESX 4.

  • How to reach esxi host 5 on storage area network

I have a Dell PS6000E on my network.  I would like to create a volume on it and use it as a shared storage for a new configuration of esxi5 with 2 hosts.  The PS6000 already contains 2 volumes in use by other servers (physical).  To access the PS6000 via my regular local network hosts.  Is this possible, and is there a documentation on how to put in place?

    Thank you

Welcome to the community - I guess you access the PS6000E are configured for iSCSI or NAS/NFS, you will be able to access as shared storage long ESXi hosts can reach the unit. Because ESXi hosts will not be able to share the LUNS in use by other servers, you're going to create a new LUN for ESXi hosts. This storage of ESXi - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-50-storage-guide.pdf - guide that has information on how to configure your ESXi servers to access the storage.
