  3. Ensure that no aucune fonctionnalite feature of vSphere, such as storage i/o control, only use the device
  4. Hide the ESX host LUN by creating new rules in the PSA (Pluggable Storage Architecture)
  5. Anyone physically appropriate LUN of the ESX host using table tools

  7. Clean the rules created previously in order to hide the LUN
  8. Cancel paths remaining after the LUN has been removed

  • How to reach esxi host 5 on storage area network

I have a Dell PS6000E on my network.  I would like to create a volume on it and use it as a shared storage for a new configuration of esxi5 with 2 hosts.  The PS6000 already contains 2 volumes in use by other servers (physical).  To access the PS6000 via my regular local network hosts.  Is this possible, and is there a documentation on how to put in place?

    Thank you

Welcome to the community - I guess you access the PS6000E are configured for iSCSI or NAS/NFS, you will be able to access as shared storage long ESXi hosts can reach the unit. Because ESXi hosts will not be able to share the LUNS in use by other servers, you're going to create a new LUN for ESXi hosts. • 5.5u2 ESXi host will not mount CF data warehouses

I am the admin in a test lab, so many times I have to "make do" with what I have for the material.  I recently reassigned a R910 Dell with 64 GB memory in a 5.5u2 ESXi host.  It has some storage SAS (2.5 to) and some (CT 11) directly connected FC storage and some FC HBAs for use by VMs to send data to the tape library.

Recently, we had a power failure, and this host does not reconnect to the CF storage when she returned to the top.  (Duty to "make do" with what I means not having is not the capabilities of UPS).  I can tell the host of HBA see it properly and sees the LUNS on RAID controllers, but refuses to mount.  I go through the add storage Wizard, and he sees that there is a store of data storage VMFS, but always refuses to mount.  I also tried to remove the redirection to the two FC HBA that have been set up for this purpose, but it made no difference.

I have now three users unable to work because they cannot access their virtual machines on storage of this FC.  I can't even transfer them off to use the SAS storage form.

I think it might be the cause file system damage, but I'm not sure.  Someone at - it suggestions?

Have you ever tried to set up data warehouses from the command line (see, for example, http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011387)?

  • ESXi host running 6 VCSA disconnected from the vCenter

    Hi guys,.

I have a weird problem with my vCenter build 6. Single cluster of ESXi hosts. Running VCSA 6.0 and 6.0 ESXI. Making a storage of the vCenter vMotion initially got stuck at 77% and the ESXi host running the disconnected from vCenter vCenter. But I can connect directly to the ESXi host with vsphere client and see the vCenter VM works perfectly well. If I try to manually connect host ESXi and vCenter, I get the error "Failed to contact the host specified") both are in the same subnet and VLAN. I can migrate to other virtual machines without problem. I even restarted the host and yet I am not able to connect to vCenter. The host connects to vCenter if I reboot vCenter, but after a few minutes, disconnects again (even if no task does run on this topic.) I have no HA or DRS enabled at this point that I build this new environment and only presented a single LUN as a store of test data to the cluster.

    Any ideas?

OK, I think I fixed that or have at least a work around. So the underlying question was hiding ID mode/CPU EVC. I'm under the cluster to a level of EVC to reduce until I have migrate workloads from old environment and I think that this created a problem for the unit vCenter. To resolve this problem, I turned off the unit, directly connected to the ESXi host that had the camera running, edited the virtual machine and reset the masking of CPUID. Also, I've hidden the flag NX/XD of the guest. It's temporary (I hope) as once I increase the EVC to the Haswell, I will expose the NX/XD comments and test. For the moment, it is of the workaround I did. It may be of some use to someone.

  • The service PowerPath/VE is not manage LUNS on this host.

Cross posted this to EMC forums, but they tend to be much less active.  Will post a follow-up here if I found the answer elsewhere first.

I have a vCenter 5.5 build 1378903 installation and a host that I just upgraded to 5.5 build 1331820.  I did the upgrade by putting it in maintenance mode, detach my 5.8 PowerPath/VE a group of extensions of the host, attaching my new 5.9 PowerPath/VE to the host group, off lockdown, applied all the outstanding 5.1 ESXi patches and restart, applied patches 5.9 PowerPath/VE and restart.  I used 'rpowermt check_registration"to check it was OK, and he seems to think it is.

However, having not taken it out of maintenance still mode for fear that something is wrong, I checked the tab EMC VSI in my vSphere Client and it is reported at the top of the screen in a bright color:

The service PowerPath/VE is not manage LUNS on this host.

If I use 'rpowermt host = 192.0.2.1 display dev = all' he seems to think that things work:

    Pseudo-Nom = emcpower1

    VNX ID = 1234 [LUN1]

    Standard UID = naa.1234 [BLOCK_LUN_20]

    status = alive; policy = CLAROpt; in queue-IOs = 0

I guess that the result would have been empty if PowerPath was not actually managing i/o to that LUN?

On the Configuration tab, storage, "Devices" button, choose one. in the lower window "Details of the device", it shows owner as PowerPath.

My other hosts, PowerPath/VE 5.8 tab EMC VSI continue to say ' Found PowerPath/VE version 5.8 (build342) installed on the ESX host... ". »

I don't want to come out of maintenance and risk mode direct you can get back to it, if something is really wrong with PowerPath.  Something else I can check?

Found the issue; the RTOOLS version on the server was still 5.8 and it should be updated to match the version of PowerPath/VE.  Problem solved.

  • Change the path information for ESX ESXi hosts to access

Hello all! I hope you guys can help me.

I have about 47 hosts that I need to change it Round Robin storage path information. If I make the change in vCenter and restart the host it again changing fixed. So, I thought that I should change it to the level of the host through esxicli.

I have about twice as many LUNS of the Hitachi SAN. I'd like to see if it is possible to make the change in all areas, in some way, or I need to make the change by host? Also, is there anything that I need to change sides San so that it works or not.

I saw this VMware KB: modification of path information for ESX/ESXi hosts to access and assume that it is the best plan? But did not know of all put into custody, if necessary, that everyone ran to when doing this?

You will need to make the change by the host and the KB you'll find is the right method.

  • Trying to create a shared via iSCSI storage. Storage shows is not the second ESXI host

I created an iSCSI lun and gone through the process of adding it to my first ESXI host. It displays well in storage adapters-> Details and I can also add as a data store.

When I try and the same thing on my second ESXI, the iSCSI host does not appear under storage adapters-> Details (although properties are correct within the parameters of the iSCSI software card) and I can not add it as a data store.

If I remove compleatley from the first host I can then add it to the second, but (I think) need in the two hosts to use a shared storage?

    I'm doing something wrong?

    Thank you

What iSCSI solution do you use? Are there limits set on the number of connections?

  • Single recovery of ESXi host disaster using boot USB device.

Here's the scenario. I have an ESXi host 5.0 running from a USB device on a server blade using shared virtual machine network storage and is scratch storage. I have a failure catastrophic host. Can I just plug the USB device into another blade in the same chassis and start getting my VMs back operational.

In addition, in a similar scenario if I have two devices USB with the same configuration information about them can use as a backup in case of failure of the USB device or is it config info constantly being written to the USB device which is used at the time.

At the level of the configuration, you need not, this means that as long as you take a regular backup of the config, it is ok.

But when you need to set up a backup system if a production system does not go and change the Server Blade, be sure to provide a coherent zoning and LUN masking for the blade, if VMware will see the same number of unit logic and tables as before. Same thing applies for VLANS, switches to which the new blade is connected must be configured in the same way that the old blade was (its ports must be in the same VLAN), or some VM can't see the network correctly.

    1. If a system is corrupt and you just need a fresh USB boot

Plug a USB stick fresh, possibly already installed, boot, and then send the archived configuration, reboot

    2. If a full blade goes wrong, you must change the server.

Put the WWNS of the HBAS in the same areas that the blade HBA has failed

Present the WWN of the HBA to the storage group

If you use the same chassis slotin, the network should be ok, but if not, put the internal ports of the switch module blade matches the new blade in the same VLAN as port internal used for blade failed.

If you use VirtualFabric / VirtualConnect on 10GBE NICs, you must set up the same way, it was too much on the failed system.

I hope that its more clear now!

  • Unpresenting a LUN in ESXi 5

I know that the appropriate procedure to remove a LUN of ESXi 5 is to disassemble the data store (what can I do for all hosts in the cluster at the same time), then detach the device in the storage SCSI host adapter Panel.  My question is, as the doc of VMware doesn't even mention this - is that I have to follow the procedure of posting on ALL my hosts in this cluster, or a fact?  If each of them (which seems unnecessary that VMware includes a way to dismantle all but not detached from the whole) is there a good way for this script?

    Thank you!

    Chris Fox

    Hi cfox,.

You are right, for anyone a logic of one or more hosts ESXi 5 unit number, you must first remove and then head to the storage card and remove the appropriate device. Unfortunately the real detach process is on a per host-level, which means that you must do this for each unique host before unpresenting unit via the vSphre customer, if you choose to go through the user interface. My understanding is that the article will be updated in order to clarify the procedure. It is certainly a way to describe what it can be tedious if you need anyone a LUN of dozens of several hosts, I hope to be able to share the script that I wrote very soon with vSphere SDK for Perl to automate this process and a PowerCLI equivalent will be available.

  • MD3220i - install the drivers 'to host' on ESXi hosts

We bought a MD3220i to use as shared to our vmware datacenter storage.

I'm a little confused by the documentation...

She says that she needs to host software installed on each host that connects to the MD3220i and the software grouped: the driver agent and multiple paths to storage. And that any host servers that connect to the storage array need.

Without doubt, this also includes ESXi hosts?  If so - how do install on ESXi hosts?

Or I completely understood you something here...

    Advice would be appreciated,

    S.

You have no software special 'host' because all the parts needed is already bundled with vsphere ESX (i). The essential parts are to check if the right HOME is used and that configure you the initiator of swiscsi in the right way. In terms of vsphere4 you need some Voodoo (remote control) command line to use esxcli to bind the VMKs created together.

Reference Dell have a best practice on how to connect the md32x0i to vsphere which has been found at the momemt. The guide shows the ip network configuration and all the necessary parts in vsphere. Dell uses a subnet of grand for all ports of 2 controllers. If you are looking for in this forum you will also find configurations where a single subnets are used to place a port for each controller. The two works configuration but I do face "LUN is not on preferred path" errors from time to time during the use of the first installation.

If you call technical support Dell will send you the necessary guide but I do not know google can help as well. Its like for many other iscsi bays and rules applied (several VMKs, binding, etc.). If you can't find something I can dig in my Inbox if necessary.

    Edit:

OK... after a google search hard that I found the former guide who use a single subnet, but the guide describes the installation with different subnets. Then you should follow this path. Take a look at http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pvaul/en/md-family-deployment-guide.pdf

  • Stream access to the ISCSI LUNs on esxi v4

    Greetings,

Wonder just anyone could throw me some lights on it?

Esxi v4 does support stream access to a single lun? The reason behind this is I want to consolidate LUN based on roles (exch, file, etc.), that is to say, a lun (datastore) will host all the servers exch only running on different hosts.

    Thanks in advane.

    Hello

Yes No... multi host access to iscsi LUNs is possible... that's what san / storage isa he's shared on the subject. Just make sure that Suur iscsi luun u plan on using is in the list compatibilityy supported so that u get the support of vmware in the future if you need. ESX / ESXi have a clustered file system.

  • 2 ESXi hosts... Nor can see each stores data to other hosts

    All, morning

I have a little problem with a cluster of 2 servers ESXi 4.1.  They are connected to a VC and Enterprise Plus license.

We have about 15 stores of data, called san01, san02,... san15.  ESXi hosts, we'll call it ESXi-01 an ESXi-02.  As I said - they are in an active HA with DRS cluster.  They are part of a disaster recovery test, we are performing.  For some reason, only the host on which each data store has been added (add storage, select LUNS, use the existing signature) can use this store.  It does not appear when a new analysis VMFS on another host (or automatically as it should).  If you try to import the same LUN to host opposed when it is already mapped to the one, the only available option is to reformat the partition, which is not good as there are a several machines on each Lun.

So now I have a host with san2, 3, 5, 7 & 9 and all the others are on the other host.  Of course, they are unable to balance the load using vMotion & DRS.  It makes me crazy - any suggestions please?

Just FYI, the hosts are the IBM HS22 blade, cards QLogic FC and the SAN is a unit of IBM XIV.  In our main site (live), we have a XIV with all LUNS alive and running on a cluster of 12 ESX4 host.  The data is replicated on the XIV in our disaster recovery site using the iSCSI Protocol and the links were broken between the 2 sites at the beginning of the excersise, allowing data replicated to our Dr site must be set to read/write and connected to hosts via FC.  Both hosts use the same configuration as the other and have the same drive mappings to the SAN.

Look forward to hearing your ideas!

    Dave.

As I understand it, the issue could be caused by the LUNS being recognized as LUN snapshot (see the ESXi host logs)

In this case, you could try to force mount the LUNS. See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011387

  • Vmfs only store data on two physical disks on ESXi host?

I have an ESXi host with one disk of 250 GB and you want to add another disk of 250 GB to the host.  Is it possible to have two discs in the Act on the host as data store single vmfs?  This is a test machine and there is no shared storage (nfs, LUNs, etc.) available.  Can I add a measure after adding the second drive to the host?

    Thank you

    Ken

Yes it is possible and it's called covering vmfs. However this is not recommended as any failure on one of the disc would render the whole vmfs unusable.

  • Is it possible to use GPFS or another build is a SAN storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts?

We have a license GPFS and SAN storage. I am trying to create a storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts share existing virtual machines. We tried once NFS, it of a little slow and consume too much bandwidth LAN.

Anyone can help answer? Thank you very much in advance!

It depends on your storage space.

You must connect all hosts to the same San, then follow the configuration guide of ESXi and specific documentation for your storage space (for sharing LUNS on multiple hosts).
