Present LUN storage

Hello

Please let me know, what is the process to present the LUN of 256 in single ESXi host, I hired a few parameters to change... Is this true? If true, please share the steps.

Thanks in advance.

Hello

Please note that 256 LUNS by ESXi host is the maximum configuration in vSphere 5.1. This configuration is fully supported by VMware.

Somehow goes beyond this limit is not recommended and you could not get support if you have problems with this host in the furture.

  • Failed to add LUN storage

HI, I am trying to add a new storage and after selecting the LUN, I get the following message:

Call "HostDatastoreSystem.QueryVmfsDatastoreCreateOptions" of object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESXi '10.212.77.30' failed.

The LUN is 465 GB in size and it's hosted on a HP MSA60, I recreated the LUN several times and still not the same error, what could be the cause for it?

    Resolution:

VMware cannot format some LUNS but windows can and once the logical unit number is in the format Windows, vmware can reformat

Create a virtual Windows machine test and fix a new hard drive and select the LUN as a raw device Mapping...

    Connect to Windows VM Test

    Open disk management

and re-run the analysis for the new drive

    Format the new drive

VI - change the settings of the virtual machine and remove the new drive

Now, try to add it as a new storage device... This works.

  • Presentation storage to hosts on servers separate vCenter

    Guy couple of questions:

    1. Can someone please check that I can present safe storage to hosts that are managed by two different vCenter servers?  The original vCenter server has MANY LUNS connected with VM 50 or so running.  The new vCenter VM has a single cluster with a single host.  I need to move the hosts of origin to the new vCenter server by disconnecting > remove > add, but I need the only host in the cluster of destination to see all the storage hosting the original already see.  It was my understanding that since it is a clustered file system, you may add VMFS volumes to hosts in different groups, differect vCenter servers, etc..  Is this correct?  I can't really have any downtime during this time.
    2. If the only way to migrate a virtual computer in a cluster must be a cold migration, how I never migrate my vCenter VM to a new cluster?  If I stop the virtual machine to perform the migration, vCenter will be down to stop me moving it.  Sorry if it's a lame question. We recently moved to a machine virtual for vCenter... we were always physical.

    1. Yes, you can safely do this.  I just finished a migration of virtual machines in a cluster of 3.5 on VirtualCenter 2.5 a new vCenter and 4.1 hosts.  I had storage presented to the authorities and simply stop VMS, removed from the inventory and then added to the inventory and blah blah blah.

    2. I suppose I never tried, but you could stop the VM vCenter and then connect directly to a host with the vSphere Client and add to the inventory on the host, power back on and see if the virtual machine.  I guess it would be, but I'm not 100% sure.

  • Large storage presentation / ESX / requirement 6 to

    Hello

I'm running ESX 3.5, update5, as well as the center of vSphere 4.0.  So far, I've never had a need to create a virtual machine with more than 2 TB of storage, but a situation occurred when I need to migrate a file server, about 6 TB of storage to the virtual machine.  At the present time, my SAN only me will create up to LUN 2 to (well that in the update has been set for him, that has changed - once the update is applied, the limit is of ~ 32 TB).  How would you recommend that I handle this situation, while keeping my risk of corruption or failure of a single element of my setup, as low as reasonably possible?  I'm looking for recommendations VM/SAN, as long as Windows (2008 R2, probably)-dynamic disks, the separate discs, etc.

    Thank you.

ESX 3.5 and 4 have a limit of 2 TB-512 size lun.  Dynamic disks work fine, but are not the best choice.   You can always present LUNS and mount the secondary LUN as folders in your LUN master rather than assign a drive letter to each.

  • iSCSI treatment new target LUN in the additional paths for target Lun

    Hello

I have a 5.5.0 ESXi host (build 1331820) I am trying place some new iSCSI LUNS to, but I have a problem with it that I am hoping someone can help me solve.

The back-end iSCSI server is running CentOS 6.5 with tgtd providing iSCSI targets.  There are four iSCSI targets in production, with another two created and used here.  When I re-scan the iSCSI environment after adding two new objectives, I see more than 4 disks in the Details pane of map iSCSI under Configuration-> storage adapters.

In addition, two of the LUNS stop working and inspection also shows that new iSCSI targets are seen as paths separate for the two broken LUNS.  It is:

    Existing LUNS:

    IQN.2014 - 06.storage0.jonheese.local:datastore0

    IQN.2014 - 06.storage1.jonheese.local:datastore1

    IQN.2014 - 06.storage2.jonheese.local:datastore2

    IQN.2014 - 06.storage3.jonheese.local:datastore3

    New LUN:

    IQN.2014 - 06.storage4.jonheese.local:datastore4

    IQN.2014 - 06.storage5.jonheese.local:datastore5

Of the "Managing paths" dialog for each found discs, I see that "datastore4" presents itself as an additional path to "datastore0" and "datastore5" presents itself as a path to "datastore1" - even if the target names are clearly different.

So can someone tell me why vSphere client iSCSI is the treatment target separate iSCSI LUNS as having multiple paths to the same target?  I compared the configuration of tgtd between the original LUN 4 and 2 new LUNS, and everything seems OK.  They are all attached to different backend disks (not that vSphere should know/care about this) and I wrote zeros to the new back-end disks LUNS to ensure that there is nothing odd about the disc, confusing the iSCSI client.

I can post some newspapers/config/information required.  Thanks in advance.

    Kind regards

    Jon Heese

For anyone who is on this same situation, my supposition above proved to be correct.  But in addition to renumbering of the scsi_id each of the LUNS, I also had to renumber the field controller_tid to the controllers on the second node would be present with unique IDS.  Here is an example of the stanza of config I used for each LUN:

    # device LUN storage medium

    -storage/dev/drbd5 store

    # SCSI for storage LUN identifier

    scsi_id EIT 00050001

    # Identifier for the LUN controller SCSI

    controller_tid 5

    # iSCSI initiator IP address (ed) allowed to connect

    initiator-address 192.168.24.0/24

It is a problem of configuration of tgtd after all!  Thanks to all for the questions that led me to the right answer!

    Kind regards

  • VCenter storage issue

Vcenter needs to see all the storage attached hosts have access to? I tried Googling it but could not find a definitive answer. Thank you!

    Hello

No, you don't have to present LUNS to storage the vCenter Server (if installed on the physical host). It is recommended to have a redundant between the hosts of ESXi and vCenter network connectivity since that is how the pulse information is shared. In most facilities vCenter is a VM and if that's what you have, then you can srtike this step to present LUNS to the vCenter VM. The storage is configured between ESXi hosts and LUNS and vCenter offers a management interface to create/remove the virtual machines on the underlying storage.

  • Creation of local disks LUNS.

I have a few physical machines here, they have two disks (each 300 GB in RAID 1). I ve configured each one as an ESX host with their drives as LOCAL to the vcenter.

Is possible to share their disks or a part of them (perhaps partitioning) and the LUNS? If it is possible, I set some clusters and enable HA. =)

    Hello

It is not possible without the storage virtualization of your guests with products like VMware Storage Appliance, StoreMagic, Datacore, etc.

Alternatively, you can create a virtual machine to present this storage via NFS to another host but that wouldn't do for HA, etc.

    Mr. VMware

    Hello

LUN ID are assigned on the side storage.

Based on the ability of the matrix of storage you use, there are several options.

    That is to say,

all LUNS shared is attached to a storage group, each storage unit on the inside as the SG not identifying his own logic unit number.

When the storage Administrator allow several initiators (HBA) to access this SG will all see with the ID LUN storage devices configured in the SG.

Some tables use a different approach.

They provide storage devices on a per initiator basis, including the ability to individually assign LUN ID for a storage device.

These berries are capable of presenting the same storage device to several intiators with different LUN ID.

This did cause problems with older versions of ESX, as a best practice, so it is recommended to use the same LUN ID shared storage devices.

    Kind regards

  • ISCSI LUN

    Hi all

It is possible to have a present LUN iscsi to a vSwitch with pool.

I read the manual & quot; Configuration of the initiators iSCSI and storage & quot; but we know only this issue.

My setup is therefore 1 vSwitch with two nick teamwork for all the computer's network traffic iSCSI and virtual.

    Thanks in advance.

    Kind regards.

Yes, grouping of NETWORK cards is OK for iscsi, but it is recommended that no more than two cards network is used. See below for more information on:

  • The MSCS storage configuration

    Hi all

I would like to create a virtual cluster using MSCS on Windows 2008 R2 to run SQL. I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around the configuration storage room. I would like to have a 2 cluster nodes with each cluster running on a different node.

We use CF to the EMC CX Clarrion-340. I understand that I must use RDM disks.

When I create a physical cluster, I create a LUN of ladd and storage on the SAN for the cluster group. I then to the area of everything and he my storage can be added to the cluster.

How well it works with virtual machines? It is not as if they have cards CF connecting to SAN. So, how access to the SAN storage?

    Maybe I'm on that thought.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Kind regards

    Dean

Dean, present you LUNS to the ESX host only, in the same way you present LUNS to storage data VMFS. Next, you will add these LUNS to your nodes in cluster as RDM disks. Once you have done your esx servers will create mapping files that take the first virtual machine to LUN IO, all consecutive IOs will be sent directly from VM to LUN by your ESX HBAS. I recommend checking your storage against the hardware compatibility list for Vmware for the support of MS Failover cluster in this configuration, but it could still work well without be supported by vmware.

  • Re-attach the LUN

I'm migrating LUNS from Site A to Site B.  Site B have ESXi 4.1 running.  My question is how can I joined those LUNS to my hosts of the Site B ESXi 4.1 that I migrated just above the Site A?

You must present the storage in the same way you did for your guests in A Site.  You may need to restart if this is a new presentation of the LUNS to hosts.

    HELP REQUIRED PLEASE?

I have a windows VM, which must be connected to a load of RAW LUN mapped. These LUNS (storage symmetrix btw) were all presented through their esx host and were confirmed by the SAN guys and myself. The question I have now is how can I confirm what the label of "vml.xxx" for each raw mapped LUNs (I can't scroll all the way to confirm what it is!). I need this information so I can marry until Dev ID is presented in which logic unit number. The virtual machine is running and needs to stay on as long as its prod. So my question is, is there a way to know what the full title of the map file is please?

Check the attachment below which shows a "gross mapped lun" properties and its inability to scroll to the end to copy the mapping file name complete.

    Thanks in advance
