Upgrade my iMac 10.1 (late 2009 model)

My family loves our iMac 10.1 (model) end 2009.  We want to move him to a better performance in speed (recently very slow using iphoto, imovie, and web browsing) and capacity (500 G HDD is occupied 85%).  There are 3 areas I want to do the upgrade.  Enjoy for some recommendation or sharing other users

1. will join 12 G 4 G RAM (because want to keep the original 2 x 2 G). I'll add 2 x 4 G RAM.  Should what model of RAM I buy?

2. I want to improve the disk from 500 G to 1 T.  I don't know I can't DIY after checking the You Tube.  Apple is offering this upgrade services? There are a few computer shops can do the job but I hesitate

3. due to the improvement of capacity RAM and HARD drive, I need to update my old Snow Leopard OS to more recent and reliable version.  Should I go straight to the latest version (EL Capitan)? This new OS version will drag my old iMac to be very slow?

Configuration of my iMac 10,1(21.5")

-3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

-4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

-OS X: 10.6.8

Thanks for your sharing in advance

Take your time, once you remove the screw, slide a book between the screen and the frame, then remove the cables.  Not a lot of room to pull up, this will help you manage the space...

The superdrive in my iMac (21.5, late 2009, running OSX 10.10.3) refuses to mount new audio CD. He sees the cds, which have already been imported into iTunes (12.3.2.35) and same DVD. But new (IE back to the computer) cds are ejected, which means that I can't add anything to my music library on a cd. Any help would be appreciated!

First try to reset the SMC & LANDAU 2 - 3 times back to back by LANDAU and Intel iMac SMC resets with all devices disconnected.

If that does not resolve the problem, go to your local office supply store and get a CD/DVD cleaning kit and use it. If this does not work, then the SuperDrive is end of life and should be replaced. Many users with iMacs older everything just get external DVD readers, if you need to do this, I recommend you contact OWC (www.macsales.com) and they can direct you to one that fits your needs.

  • late 2009 iMac desktop computer - time to go?

My desktop iMac computer has six years this month, [late 2009 model] and provided the fault all this free time. I have upgraded the RAM 12 GB of 8 GB a year ago.

My iMac is linked to a Maxtor external drive old eight year which runs on Firewire 400 [Mac is up to 800]. External drives is full at 85%, while the internal drive of the Mac is only 10% full.

The IMac is scrambling to run Photoshop elements 13. It's just excruciatingly slow in editing, but OK mode to the Organizer. It is also slow, but less than software image of Macphun so editing running creative Kit 2016.

This slow performance is noticeable when I went to 13 items in Photoshop. I wonder if it's related to the lack of speed by updating the internal hard drive and make the Time Machine backups running every hour so at the time where he finished one, it's almost time to start over. Recovery from the external drive is OK.

To get a new 2 TB external hard drive, to say I seem to need firewire 800 and Thunderbolt. LaCie is the brand only I found which is an external hard drive at once [Thunderbolt will be required when I buy a new IMac]. My IMac built in wifi is not compatible with the new Apple Time Capsule.

The problem has a number of different options available. Who would you?

I have 2 mid iMacs 2007 that work very well.

You have been the victim of misinformation.

There are well 2 t (and more) disks that use USB or FireWire available. No necessary crush.

WiFi from your iMac is compatible with the new Apple Time Capsule.

  • 27 "imac late 2009 gel

    Hello

I have an imac 27 "late 2009 with 16 GB of RAM which is constantly freezing. Later, I'll try to explain all the things I tried before this announcement:

    • Start the computer, everything goes well and after a few minutes, the imac freezes: I can see the screen and move the mouse but the iMac does not. I stop and restart
    • The two phases of boot, it only works the first: I see the Apple logo and progress bar until it reaches about half, disappears a moment, and instead of progress, it displays white screen.
    • The next day begins, but after a few minutes, it does the same thing.
    1. 1st attempt: reinstall the operating system with recovery
Choose the drive Macintosh HD and formatting
Computer is connected to an average installation
I turn it off, turn on, and complete the installation, but fails again once the operating system is running
    2. 2nd attempt: check the RAM
Burn a CD memtest, alt to start, choose CD and passes the test properly without crashing
Reset and the same average progress of white screen fault bar
    3. 3rd attempt: resets
      Reset the SMC, no load
      Reset the NVRAM, no-load
Boot in safe mode (the carillon and then capitalized) and start correctly
Reboot in normal mode and will not start

When I reset the SMC, instead of the white screen after flash in the middle of the progress bar, the apple logo reappears and the progress bar stays frozen

I read a lot of other posts and it seems that you need the journal of EtreCheck. I ran this tool twice (no problem - simply check and Apps are broken) since none of the profiles corresponding to my problem. Note that I had to run in safe mode because I'm not able to start normally. I don't know if this is a problem.

I have a late 2009 iMac. When I tried to upgrade to El Capitan. He said that the CHIP shows the h/d is a failure and can not be updated. I have install an external withEl of h/d Cap but it is very slow. the h/d is USB 3 but the iMac's USB 2. the h/d is only 5400 RPM. a 7200 RPM 7 / would accelerate the iMac?

No, because the limiting factor is the computer is USB 2.0, which is how it connects any external drive apart the external drive. As USB 2.0 is much slower, there is no real advantage to a 7200 RPM drive. What you need is a Firewire enclosure that supports FW800 which is much faster than USB 2.0.

  • Can my iMac 21.5-inch, late 2009 with Core 2 Duo deal with 16 GB of RAM?

I think to upgrade the RAM on my Mac to 16 GB or more. My Mac will handle it well?

In accordance with article Apple here: install memory in an iMac - Apple's Support,

For models of iMac (late 2009), you can use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMM memory DDR3 SDRAM 1066 MHz in each slot.

The statement gives the impression that my iMac can not handle more than 8 GB of RAM. (2x4gb). is this correct?

Your iMac can handle a maximum of 16 GB of ram (4 x 4). A single note use quality a supplier like OWC or Crucial ram and avoid the bargain brands.

  • Can I put a Seagate FireCuda drive in my iMac late 2009?

Apple Hardware Test (AHT) says that my SATA drive, 1 TB in size, has a problem.  Nothing specific indicated. The code given is: 4HDD/11 / 40000000:SATA (0,0)

I was testing because of the prob trying to get a good download of macOS Sierra.  Looks like I need to replace a hard drive first.  I have an iMac late 2009 with a Core i7 quad core, 16 GB DDR3 1067 Mhz ram and ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card.  I can put a SSD in this unit or am I stuck with the Barracuda drives.  I'm looking for FireCuda readers and like what I see and read about them.

If you want an SSD, then I highly recommend:

    • Samsung 840.
    • OCZ ARC100 and other models.
    • OWC 3 G SSD.

The foregoing is all compatible and should work well. Your model only supports SATA 3 Gb/s speeds due to the controller, so don't waste your money on more expensive discs of 6 G or 6 Gbps because they work faster than a car of 3 G. If you decide on a 6 GB drive, however, they must be compatible as they work on the slower bus of 3G.

  • my 27 Imac late 2009 became very slow

My 27 Imac late 2009 became very slow - I think especially after I've upgraded to El Capitan. Otherwise, everything in the computer works perfectly and I m using only 200 I have the 1 TB. Onyx and other tests can't find anything wrong. I mainly use my computer for word documents and to manage his photos about 30 000. The internal memory is 2 x 2 GB. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could do to speed it up? Thank you.

I wish I had an answer, but all I can do is rather echo to your problem. I have a 19 mid-2007 "iMac, contributed to the maximum with the RAM, 1 t disc hard less that half full, who did the same thing - he has worked with El Capitan until I updated to the latest version. Once that has happened the machine became so slow as to be unusable. It would take ten or twelve minutes to record a mouse click. When I restarted the machine, it took 32 HOURS to start (Fortunately it isn't my main Mac production).

Last week, I tried all the remedies of common sense - by removing unused software, keeping an eye on the activity monitor (there is nothing fancy here), etc. Finally, I did all the stuff start, PRAM, run utilities disk (no noted problem) and even tried to reinstall El Capitan to a bootable USB I did with my first Mac, the reinstall, but seemed not 'take' somehow - he wanted to repeat the installation procedure again and again.

I use the little Mac for Internet, e-mail and (as Karlis2) deal with some of the oldest pictures in my files - I'm sure that I have pictures on Time Machine, so I'm not too worried about it, but this was the first Mac way back in the day, I bought with my money and I'm a little sentimental on and would like to resurrect if possible... I wonder if there is a way to restore the operating system to an earlier version and it would make a difference?

  • Mid-2009 MBP memory is compatible with the iMac late 2009?

    Hello

I just upgraded the memory for my MacBook Pro (from 2 X 2 GB 2 X 4 GB)... I was going to sell the used memory space but realized that I might be able to add to my iMac late 2009.  How will I know if it's compatible?  Currently the iMac only has 4 GB as 2 units but is expandable to 16 GB and has 4 slots available.

Forward a response and thanks in advance.

Hi OhThatGirl, you can use theCrucial memory Advisor for this.

Things you can do to solve the slow Downs

If your computer seems to run slower, here are some things you can do:

    Start with tours: OS X maintenance - MacAttorney;

    " Safe mac" the myth of the dirty Mac;

    Maintenance fast Mac Help.

Start in Safe Mode , and then repair your hard disk and permissions:

Fix the hard disk and permissions before Lion

Boot from your OS X install disk. After the installer loads, choose your language and click on the button continue. When the menu bar appears select utility drive in the Utilities menu. After that the charges of THE select your entry from hard drive (mfgr. ID and car size) in the list on the left.  In the status area, you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is faulty or has failed. (State SMART is not reported on external drives Firewire or USB). If the drive is "verified", then select your OS X volume in the list on the left (subentries under the entry for the road), click the first aid tab, then click the repair disk button. If THE reports any errors that have been corrected, and then run repair disk again until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, click repair permissions. Wait until the operation is complete, then exit FROM and return to the installer.

Repair the hard drive - Lion-Lion/mountain/Mavericks

    HD recovery start:

Restart the computer and after the buzzer, press on and hold down the COMMAND and R until it appears the screen of Menu utilities. Otherwise, restart the computer and after the buzzer, press on and hold down the OPTION key until the Boot Manager screen. Select recovery HD disk icon and click on the button below.

When the recovery menu appears, select disk utility. If no error is not reported, then click repair permissions. Wait until the operation is complete, then exit FROM and return to the main menu. Select restart from the Apple menu.

Restart your computer normally and see if it helped at all. Then do little maintenance:

For disk utility can't handle situations, the best third party is Disk Warriorutility;  Fixed DW only for problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by the corruption of directory; Warrior drive 4.x is now compatible with Intel Mac.

Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will boot Mac running Snow Leopard or earlier. He cannot start Mac that came with Lion or later preinstalled, however, DW will work on these models.

    Suggestions for OS X maintenance

OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are supposed to take place on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. Maintenance scripts that are run at the beginning AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep). If this isn't the case, then a great solution is to download and install a shareware like Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacronor Anacron utility that will automate the maintenance regardless of whether activity if the computer is off or asleep.  Dependence on third-party utilities to run periodic maintenance scripts has been significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have little or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later version, and must not be installed.

OS X automatically defrags files smaller than 20 MB in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files it little need to defragment the hard drive.

Under no circumstances should you install operating MacPaw or ZeoBit software (CleanMyMac/CleanMyDrive or Mac Keeper, respectively.) You don't need special software to keep your computer.

The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.

Difficulty a few pop ups browser that supported Safari

Common pop - ups include a message saying that the Government has taken over your computer and you pay release (often called "Moneypak"), or a false message saying that your computer has been infected and you need to call a number of tech support (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it to be resolved. First of all, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and that your computer has not been assigned. This "hack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so don't pay not money, call number, or provide personal information. This article will give an overview of the solution to remove the pop-up window.

    Quit Safari

Usually, these pop-ups will not go by clicking 'OK' or 'Cancel '. In addition, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in grey, including the option to leave Safari. You'll probably force quit Safari. To do this, press command + option + ESC, select Safari, press on force quit.

    Relaunch Safari

If you restart Safari, the page will reopen. To avoid this, hold the "Shift" key when opening Safari. This will prevent windows since the last time that Safari was running since the reopening.

It will not work in all cases. The SHIFT key must be maintained at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window is displayed again. In these circumstances, after force quit Safari, turn off Wi - Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then restart Safari normally. He'll try to reload the malicious Web page, but without a connection, it will not be able to. Leave this page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com and try to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet and the page that you entered is displayed rather than the malicious.

An excellent link to read is Tom Reed Mac Guide of malicious programs.

If you need antivirus protection Thomas Reed recommends to use ClamXAV. (Thanks to Thomas Reed to this recommendation.)

The user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:

    The facts are:

    1. There is no anti-malware software can detect 100% of malware out there.

    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect all targeting the Mac.

    3. the best way to prevent breaches the most is for you as the user is aware that

the most successful malware attacks rely on sophisticated social engineering

techniques preying on human greed, * and fear.

4 Internet pop-up windows telling the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on

your computer is designed to trick you into installing their malware thinking it's a

    protection against malware.

    5. some of the anti-malware market products are worse than malware

go where they are supposed to protect you.

    6. be careful where you go on the internet.

    7. don't download anything from sites, you know are safe.

8 avoid links that you receive in email, always be wary, even if you get something

you think a friend is, but that you did not expect.

    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume that it is malware.

    Troubleshooting Applications

I recommend that you download a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaneror hiding a Cocktail that you can use to delete the former newspapers and archives, cleaning, etc. Corrupted cache, logs or temporary files can slow down the application or OS X crashes and panics of the kernel.

If you have leopard snow or leopard, then for similar repairs install Applejackfreeware utility.  If you do not start in OS X, you can boot into single-user mode , where you can run Applejack to make a set of routines for repair and maintenance of the command line.  Note that it takes 1.5 AppleJack for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later versions.

    Basic backup

For some people, Time Machine will be more than enough. Time Machine is part of Mac OS X. There are two components:

    1. a panel of Time Machine preferences as part of the system of preferences;

    2. a request for Time Machine, located in the Applications folder. It's

used to manage backups and restore backups. Time Machine

requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the

    drive being backed up.

You can also get an external drive at least equal to the size hard disk internal and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the disk utility's restore option. You can also create and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (the order is not significant):

    1 Carbon Copy clone

    2. get backup

    3 already seen

    4 superDuper!

    5. Synk Pro

    6. Tri-Backup

Visit The FAQ XLab and read the FAQ on the backup and restore.  Also read How to back up and restore your files. For using Time Machine, visit FAQ Time Machine of Pondini for help with all this time Machine.

Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate .

    Additional tips

Make sure you have a sufficient amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run simultaneously. Make sure to leave a minimum of 10% of the capacity of the hard disk as free space.

Add more RAM. If your computer less than 2 GB of RAM and you use OS X Leopard or later, then you can do it with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion works much better with 4 GB of RAM that is their system. Most concurrent applications, that you tend to use the more RAM you should have.

Always have at least 15 GB, or 10% of the capacity of your hard disk as free space, the largest. OS X frequently accesses your hard disk, so offering enough free space will keep things slow down.

Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:

    Before Mavericks

Open the activity monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select all processes in the drop process .  Click the % CPU column heading twice to display in descending order.  If find you a process that uses a large amount of time processor (> = 70,) then select the process, and then click the quit icon in the toolbar.  Click the force quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Don't forget to mention the name of the runaway process, so you can find the cause of the problem.

    Mavericks and later versions

Open the activity monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select all processes in the menu display .  Click the CPU tab in the toolbar.

This problem occurs often because of a corrupted cache or the preferences file or an attempt to write in a corrupted log file.
