Use virtual of ESX 3.5 machines in ESXi 5.0

Hello

I have a question. I need to spend our virtual ESX 3.5 machines a ESXi 5.0. So, I need to update the virtual hardware and the right vmTools?

And to do this, I need to install the VMware Update Manager. But how to install this program? Do I need to configure a new server vCenter Server?

Or is there another way?

Thank you for your help.

Best regards

Dominik

You upgrade to ESXi 5.0 on the same hardware or new?

You have vCenter already in place or running a stand-alone host?

For the upgrade of VMware Tools and hardware Virtua VUM is not required. Once the virtual machine is running on the host ESXi 5.0, it can be done on VM separately

Refer to KB for the upgrade virtual hardware and Vmware tools

  • Check disk on a virtual of ESX 3.5 machine operation

    Hi all

I have a virtual machine running w2k3 victory and I want to check one of my disks for consistency. I want to know if it is possible to use check disk (chkdsk) to do this. I don't know if chkdsk will work on a vmdk file. I don't want to use it with out a lot of knowledge and corrupting my data.

    Pls suggest.

    Thank you

CHKDSK runs very well (running inside the virtual machine of course) and will not damage your vmdk.

  • Use virtual servers to ESX 3.5 in ESXi 5.0

    Hello everyone

First of all, sorry for my bad English. It is not my language.

So, I have a question. For the moment, let's have an ESX 3.5 Server 2 virtual servers. (Windows Server 2003)

Now, we want to improve our ESX 3.5 to 5.0 ESXi. We bought a new server on which we want to run ESXi 5.0. So is it possible to simply copy these virtual machines in ESX 3.5 to 5.0 ESXi? (Updated the vmTools) Or I need to reinstall all of these machines?

    Best regards

    Dominik

    Welcome to the community...

The new host (ESXi 5.0) is going to be autonomous? If so, you can use Vmware Converter to import the virtual machine to the new host ESXi 5.0

If you have the shared storage and assign to 5.0 ESXi host, you can remvoe the virtual of ESX 3.5 machine and it add new virtual host, VMtools upgrade equipment, etc...

You need to remove hidden devices that you are moving to new hardware.

  • vMotion between ESX 3.5 5.1 ESXi MAchines?

Hi guys I need to know if possible to a Vmotion between ESX 3.5 s machines to ESXi 5.1?

I hace 2 servers with ESX 2.5 I want to do the update to 4.1 and then to 5.1 hot, for that, I have 4 new esxi 5.1.

Accoeding to http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php? It is not possible because you cannot manage the ESX 3.5 with vCenter 5.1 - I advise to use VMware Converter to V2V virtual machines to the new environment of 6.1.

  • Unable to ping Virtual Machines within ESXi host (vSphere Home Lab)

I'm using VMware workstation 9, I have 4 virtual machines created inside the workstation.
(192.168.1.0 network is defined inside VMware workstation VM network editor)

    Domain controller - 192.168.1.1
    ESX1 - 192.168.1.11 (2 NICs - vmnic0 and vmnic1 connected to n/w)
    Esx2 - 192.168.1.12 (2 NICs - vmnic0 and vmnic1 connected to n/w)
    Management Server - 192.168.1.5

I have 2 virtual computers created inside the machine Esx1

    machine to SQL - 192.168.1.4
    vcenter1 - 192.168.1.2

I have 1 computer virtual created inside the Esx2 machine

    vcenter2 - 192.168.1.3

I can ping all the machines in the administration server - no problem

Question - I can not ping vcenter1 to sql, cannot ping vcenter1 to vcenter2, cannot ping vcenter2 to sql.
There is basically no communication between virtual machines with the Esx host and in the whole of the host. Firewalls is disable on all these machines virtual esx internal hosts.

Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Make sure that virtual network on ESXi hosts maps are Sunrise promiscous mode networking.

  • Cannot start the physical machine converted to a virtual machine under ESXi 4.0

    Hi all

I have 2 has with the material below

Dell optiplex 755 2.4 Qcore 4 GB of RAM and 160 GB of HARD drive

A performer with ESXi 4.0 other runs with Windows 2003.

I tried to convert physical machine with "Vmware Vcenter converter Stand alone" 4.0.1 build 161434

I used the tool on the source machine and by another machine on the network.

The two process converts the physical machine to a virtual machine successfully without any errors.

After conversion, the virtual machine cannot start, and shows only a small slider that is not flashing too.

The physical machine have a single partition of 160 GB

The space currently used on the physical machine is 26 GB.

I reduced the size of the HARD drive to virtual computer with fix / light available in 40 GB.

point to make here is that the ESX have only 160 GB HDD, so he will not be able to copy all 160 GB because of which I am reducing the 40 GB HARD drive

I converted a few other physical machines with 40 GB HARD drive and they work well after the conversion.

Any sugessions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Sunil,

Let me know the drive selected in the custom option controller.

  • Slow performance for virtualized hosts ESX VM

    Hello

I've been playing with ESX in VMware Server on a host XP computer. I edited under the guidance of the vmx ESX VM for. Today, however, I wonder if I could get a little more performance of the virtual machine created by the VM ESX. They run on a dell sc440 which has a xeon Dual-Core CPU and 4 GB of ram. Currently the ESX guest take about 40 seconds for good bios VM and run puppy linux iso takes about 8-9 minutes to reach the office. Since the movement of the mouse for office etc. is slow and laggy.

I do not expect cause high-speed performance, I realize I'm runnning a BONE with vmware server with a virtual machine inside a virtual machine, but if I can get a little more go out of it that would be usful to play with vmotion etc.

    Thanks in advance

I always used to install ESX in VMware workstation, server, but it's a problem of license you probably meet and have you run on the server version.

You have to activate these settings?

    Monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware".

    and

Monitor.virtual_mmu = "hardware" (if your CPU manages RVI/EPT) see: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-9150

Let us know if it solved your problem and don't forget to rate my answer.

  • Don't know which one to use, virtual server or ESXi

I have a couple of Windows server running on IBM e series.  They do not work with heavy loads so I thought to bring together them.  I used Virtual Server 1 x front on my desk and loved so I thought to use it, but now that ESXi is available I want to understand if this is a better option.

I know that ESXi will run the VM faster and uses fewer resources, but from what I read, it seems that it is not as easy to manage.  Everyone notes that the console is difficult to transition to?  Furthermore, what about backups?  For example, if I want to make a snapshot I can run and copy off in my NAS box, but it seems that you cannot directly access the VM ESXi files.  Is this correct?

    Thank you

    Steve

For example, if I want to make a snapshot I can run and copy off in my NAS box, but it seems that you cannot directly access the VM ESXi files. Is this correct?

A snapshot is not a good method of backup, and this isn't how it should be used.  A snapshot preserves the State of a virtual machine that allows you to make changes and revert to a previous state if you need to.  Should not be considered as an alternative to long-term backup.  That's why you have to VCB.

ESX 3i is very easy to manage, the hardest part is not console, so you can not do operations on the host easily, but you can copy files from ESX via the data store.  While ESX is more suited for very large like VM 15 guests or more, and if you are not running a very high load and not many VM VM Server will work fine.  There isn't really a difference in performance between any virtualization product until you start to reach the breaking point.  ESX can accommodate dozens of virtual machines on a computer, is there that ESX is really profitable (and I know that ESX 3i is free) but pound for pound can match VM Ware ESX Server 3i for small host environments, and given that it's windows it does not have a lot to manage.

  • ESXi installation before vCenter Server?  How can I get vCenter Server on a virtual machine on ESXi servers?

My plan for a new vSphere Essentials Plus 5.5 U2a installation is to have the vCenter Server on a virtual machine on the servers of the host on which is installed ESXi.  However, all the installation instructions I found indicate the user to first install the vCenter Server.  How can I get vCenter Server on a virtual machine on ESXi servers?

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi munkyman welcome to communities.

After you have installed your first ESXi host, open a browser and go to https://your-ESXi-ip-or-FQDN

You can download the vSphere Client here. It is a windows application that you can install on your desktop. It is often referred to as the "c# Client vSphere" in communities and blog posts, because it is a new implemented in the vCenter Server Web client.

But for the beginning, install the vSphere Windows Client. You can then launch it and connect directly to your ESXi host. Here you can create your first virtual machine, which can be the VM vCenter (installation of Windows or device, that is you).

You can use the web client or connect to the Server with the client c# vSphere vCenter VCenter runs.

  • Using all-in-one with answering machine

I have an office jet pro 8600 and love it.  However, I would like to know if it is possible to use the fax without having to connect to my machine.  I would use the printer and the answering machine in two different areas.  Is this possible?

    Hello

The answer to your question is YES.
    Listed below are two ways...

#1: having a dedicated fax line.
#2: subscribe to a distinctive ring by calling your carrier telephone and even on the printer menu Telec.

  • No reason not to use Virtual PC to work around inconsistency of program?

I just bought a $29 printer instead of spending $45 to replace the No. 23 of my DeskJet HP ink cartridge.  Unfortunately, I forgot to check for compatibility and have not been able to find a way to share with Windows 98SE.

I tried to upgrade my old copy of the print shop to Vista, but the Compatibility Assistant told me it was a known incompatibility.

On a whim, I booted up my copy of Virtual PC with Windows XP and was able to install and run it without problem. THERE is a driver available for the printer and had XP no harm to use as a shared printer.

Is there a reason not to use Virtual PC to work around incompatibility with Vista? I know that it is not suitable for the games because of limited capacity, but what about productivity as The Print Shop Deluxe 5.0 programs?

P.S. Can someone suggest a way to share a HP DeskJet 1000 with Windows 98SE? I saw a reference to another printer that has 98 drivers called a Deskjet 1000cse, but according to the website of HP, this is another printer that is no longer supported. Any chance I can use drivers 95/98 for CSE to connect to a share of Vista? If so, how do I configure it? If these drivers are like drivers for my DeskJet 812C, the option "have disk" will NOT work in the list, the installer will put things for a local printer rather than on a network, an and I do not remember that it is also easy to change the port to a network printer, you can with XP and Vista.

Is there a reason not to use Virtual PC to work around incompatibility with Vista? I know that it is not suitable for the games because of limited capacity, but what about productivity as The Print Shop Deluxe 5.0 programs?

As long as it works, it's a great idea.
