vCenter 4.1 to 5.5 upgrade

Hello

I'm relatively new to virtualization and therefore ask for basic assistance. We have a vSphere 4.1 system installed at the customer. All guests are on ESXi 4.1 and vCenter 4.1 is located on one of the virtual machines on a host. We will add five new guests with 5.5 ESXi. Since vCenter 4.1 does not support the ESXi 5.5, we'll upgrade vCenter to 5.5. Questions I have now:

1 being existing vCenter 4.1 on host with ESXi 4.1, there will be no problem in upgrading vCenter to 5.5?

2 will be the vCenter 5.5 support ESXi 4.1 upgrade hosts?

3. is there a documented procedure for a gradual upgrade from vCenter Server?

4. any other recommendation?

Thank you

Kind regards

coepengineer

Page 71, you get not documented to go on upgrading vCenter version 5.0 or earlier.

also look at the following guide for your reference, someone managed to create a document with instructions step by step what you plan to do. Just make sure you try to map your scenario with that documented and see if it helps.

http://www.lesysadmin.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/HOWTO-upgrade-vCenter-server-from-4.1-to-5.5.PDF

1 being existing vCenter 4.1 on host with ESXi 4.1, there will be no problem in upgrading vCenter to 5.5?

Double required physical check and compatibilities of component software, if your environment is to have sufficient resources to support vCenter 5.5 and if you make your OS, DB etc compatible with vCenter 5.5 as part of your business step by step, the upgrade should not do in the face of questions.

2 will be the vCenter 5.5 support ESXi 4.1 upgrade hosts?

Should not be big hassle management guests old version with the new version of vCenter server. You also plan to upgrade hosts to version 5.5?

  • The vCenter 5.5 to 6.0 upgrade, which can be bad...?

    Hello

I am trying to upgrade our server vCenter version 5.5 to 6.0, but this is a boxing match, and so far the vCenter Server won I'm afraid...

The problem is that I get an error when you install saying: "unable to install the servie collector syslog", and list a few files, then an error saying "Installtion of the component VCSServiceManager failed with error 1603" code.

Our implementation: Windows server 2008 R2, all services of vcenter, including sql is on the same server. Only a vcenter server as well.

I have read a lot about this kind of problem and tested a few things, but have not yet found any solution.

    Things I have tryied:

    • The time is the same on the vcenter server as on the rest of the field.
    • Windows install the value automatic and started
    • The ODBC can communicate with sql and leak white spaceat the end of the name
    • An IPv4 address is set and no IP address conflict.
    • The user to make the upgrade a sysadmin on the database.
    • Tryied with a fully patched Server
    • TCP/IP and named pipes are enabled in the configuration of sql

What can we check? What could be the problem here?

Thanks in advance! See attachment on the error

    Problem is now solved.

Read today that vmware has released a new version, the vcenter 6.0 Update 1, build 3040890. After a score tie to install that instead of build 2656757 it worked like a charm. No error and no warings, everything rolls.

  • Create the snapshot on VCenter VM during the process of upgrading to VCenter 5.1?

    People,

My VCenter server is a virtual machine running on the host ESXi number 01 (I've nailed specifically using the DRS rule), so it is desirable to take snapshots for VCenter Server VM during the upgrade process?

What happened when the upgrade process has failed? can I safely restored the snapshot?

When the snapshot is created before the upgrade, it means that the snapshot will be the safe state of the VM, vCenter and SQL in your case. But if you can make a backup of database to an external location.

  • vCenter 5.1 to 5.5 upgrade question

It is perhaps a silly question, but dvSwitches makes me nervous. In my test vCenter 5.5 environment, when I update an esxi 5.1 to 5.5, I improve something related to dvSwitches on the host itself. I don't know if it caused no disruption or not, since I had no VM on this host.

Assuming for the moment, vCenter is upgraded to 5.5 and my esxi hosts are always in 5.1, will I run into any downtime upgrades vCenter?

Upgrade of a distributed switch is an operation without interruption: upgrade a vSphere Distributed Switch to a Version later than with the Web Client vSphere

You can upgrade your vCenter to 5.5 without impact to your 5.1 ESXi hosts.

  • vCenter and SQL server Virtual Hardware Upgrade stuck

    vSphere 5.5

I updated all my hardware vm to version 10. Everything went a lot except for vCenter and the VM of MSSQL. They both say the upgrade (successful), but I am unable to vmotion the vms anywhere because of the following error:

    A general error occurred:

The destination host is not compatible with the version of the material to which the virtual machine is scheduled to be upgraded. In order to proceed with the operation, regular virtual computer compatibility update must be disabled.

    I did the following:

    -stop the two virtual machines

    -restart of the host

-removed from the inventory of the host and added to another

The following screenshot shows the message of success on both virtual machines, and it will not go a way. It is not present on any of my other virtual machinesScreen Shot 2014-05-09 at 12.38.39 PM.png

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

    Thanks for sharing the update.

Could he please check if below lines exist in the respective vmx files of virtual machine.

    virtualHW.scheduledUpgrade.state = 'done '.

    virtualHW.scheduledUpgrade.when = "safe".

If so, power off of the respective virtual machine, make a backup of the vmx file and remove these lines from the active file, after which I am convinced that this issue should not be considered.

I guess that there is a form any of the import procedure that will allow me to suck all the existing configuration settings. Anyone know what is the process? I can't find it in the release notes or the center of doc.

    Thanks for any input.

Found in the mountains of documentation: Documentation Centre of vSphere 5.5

You have the choice to make a place in the update since the vCSA or import export of old camera again... I chose the place to upgrade... it took about 15 minutes before restarting. Seems to work after the reboot.

The alternative process of import/export leads you down the shithole of old certificates:VMware KB: configuration of CA signed certificates for vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 insert vomit emoticon

    Hello

    VMware support solve my problem:

We have seen two issues after the update.

First of all, there is no user of the solution for the virtual center when I checked the application users with SSO to the webclient service administration page.

    Solve us this problem of repointing Virtual Centre to the next according to the kb SSO instance;

    http://KB.VMware.com/kb/2033620

    1. repoint.cmd configure vc - search server https://vcenter.com:7444/lookupservice/sdk - password "laquesea" - openssl-path of the user "admin@System-Domain"-"C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Inventory Service\bin."

After that, the modules in the vpxd.cfg solution was not properly updated and an operation manual.

    C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\SSL\sso.crt

    vCenterServer_251703

    C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\SSL\sso.key

Above is the corrected version having replaced "null" with the correct path to the files of certificate and key.

This allowed vcenter service start successfully.

  • vCenter is virtual server - how to upgrade ESX host?

Our vCenter server is a virtual server.  I've been thinking how to run update manager on the host ESX, vCenter is sitting on.   The only thing I can think of is to use the VMware Converter stand alone app and move the vCenter server to another ESX host and then start vCenter / Manager Update on the new ESX host to update the original ESX host.

    Is there an easier way?

you have a shared storage?  If so, go to the host computer running the vCenter VM on, turned off, make a note of the data store that it is, remove the inventory, go to another host, browse the data store, find the vmx file, right-click "add to the inventory.

.. .or you can use VMware Converter to move the VM vCenter.  Another way would be to turn off the VM vCenter and do the upgrade using the CLI interface.

Best practices so that a VC Server VM on a host of multi with SAN storage environment must be available for the use of compatible hardware for VMotion or VCA VMotion.  If you do not have an environment that allow VCA to then I would say that the best practice is to have the VC server on a physical server - it can even be installed on XP.

  • upgrade to vCenter on new server

    Hi all

    We currently have:

A: Server vCenter current 5.5 with database on server b.

    Server B: vCenter SQL database

    C: brilliant new server

    We would like to do:

Server: old 5.5 vCenter (not in use, stop)

Server B: Server SQL database vCenter (same database as before, just upgraded to 6)

C: Server vCenter 6.x with the same database on server B as before

So what we want to do is to simply install vCenter 6 on the new server and point it at the existing database during the installation. Can you let us know if it works please? Otherwise what paths are available for us please (installation of 5.5 to the new server, pointing to the existing database, and then in place upgrade to 6 for example).

    See you soon.

    Hello

VCenter installation costs 6 and that it points to a DB vCenter previously used for 5.5 will fail with the error of the incompatibility of data base (daily if with VMware support)

What you need to do is:

Server c: fresh installation of 5.5

Perform an upgrade on the spot of 5.5 to 6.0 using the external DB. The DB is automatically promoted to VC6 compatibility during upgrade on site.

  • How to run Windows Upgrade VCenter with little or no problem at all?

    Hello

I have 24 x Servers VMware ESXi 5.1 update 1 on HP Blade servers managed by my VCenter VMware Windows virtual machine that is currently in version vCenter Server 5.1 patch 1 (build 1064983 2013-04-25) as follows:

    Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition (64-bit) (SP2) - 10.0.4000.0

My question is which of the Sub VCenter upgrade version is less stressful or no problem at all:

VMware vCenter Server 5.1 Update 3 has and modules

VMware vCenter Server 5.5 updated 2nd and modules

Note: Since the VCenter and DB SQL are in one place, I model clonedto the exsiting running VCenter server for roll simple return by deploying model when you connect directly to ESXi where the model is running.

    Thanks in advance.

Given that the process of updating U3 5.1 or 5.5 U2 is as the same, I strictly recommend you upgrade to version 5.5, in this way, you don't need to upgrade your vCenter again if you decide to upgrade your guests the time later.
