  When you create an import or export tasks and select a vNetwork Distributed Switch in the choice of the network for the virtual machine target, the task begins but does not immediately with the following error message: unknown error returned from agent vCenter Converter.   According to the "Known issues" section in the release notes for "VMware vCenter Converter vCenter Server 4.0 Update 1 | November 19, 2009 | Build 206170 "to http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_vcc_41u1_rel_notes.html#resolvedissues , the question was always present.

  There is no mention of the issue on the VMware vCenter Converter vCenter Server 4.1 release notes. The release notes can be found at http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_vcc_42_rel_notes.html

  Recently, I was doing the following error on our vCenter Server server while trying to import a virtual machine - "unable to connect to the server vCenter Converter Server.

  I followed the recommendations of the other post of the community http://communities.VMware.com/thread/239203 However, I still get the same error.

  I tried to run a repair on vCenter Converter of add/remove programs however I get the following error:

  "Cannot save the extension.

  I restarted the server as well and still no change.

  Any ideas?

  If you have changed the IP address on the VC, your best option is probably uninstall the Update Manager and converter, once again.  delete their directories under \program files\vmware\infrastructure\ installation, restart and install again.

  Both work in the same way.  The big difference is one is a plugin (Converer Plugin Enteprise vCenter) and the other is self-contained.

  (2) difference between host update utility vs. Vcenter Update utility?

  Host update utility is no longer available in 4.1, but is/has been used as a standalone tool for ESX (i) patch.  Don't know of a vCenter Update utility.

  Launch the vSphere Client, connect to vCenter then go to Plug-ins and choose to install the plugin first vConverter.

  Then once it is installed successfully, you will be able with the right button and select Import VM like mittim12 said.

  the plugin must be installed in the vSphere Client (or VIC if 2.5) you use. If this is the case, do a right-click on a cluster host / and choose Import.  The wizard should appear.
