vCenter Server Database - what's really in it?

Hi all

I was looking at a possible a 2.5 VirtualCentre 2003 R2 upgrade to a new version 2008 R2 / vCentre 4.0 server.

I read in the upgrade guide that seems simple enough, but it made me think. What is actually represented in the vCenter database - as in, if I had to establish new ones without upgrading and simply type hosts into the new vCenter Server, what I actually would lose?

Enjoy that probably said more about my lack of experience with this kind of thing but he had me wondering - the only thing I can think is a historic performance and alerts data? Server vCentre is obviously not necessary for the functioning of a group and DRS / HA configuration on the host (IDE) are pools of resources.

Just curious really - is it useful the hassle of the upgrade, or should I better just to drop the existing server and starting from scratch?

Thank you

Chris

Welcome to the community,

you already mentioned the cluster configuration and historical performance data. Some of the things you need to rebuild with a new installation - according to your needs - are data centers. Clusters, Pools of resources, folders, roles, and Permissions, alarms... In the case where you have templates, you will need to re - register manually inventory,

  • VUM and vCenter Server database

Does anyone know if 2 vCenter servers can use the same database VUM?  I'm building a new vCenter server dedicated to View 4, and I wonder if I need to have a separate database.

You will need a separate VUM server, which requires its own database, unfortunately it cannot be shared

  • VCenter Server database

Any thoughts on the passage of the physical server to our SQL 2005 VM off Vcenter database? The two are running Server 2003.

    Thank you

Nope... I don't foresee any problem anyway.  SQL as a virtual machine is fully supported, you just need to update your ODBC information.

  • Is it possible to run vCenter Server and AUVS in the same database?

Hello. My client has vCenter Server and VUM installed and running in the same database. Yes, the same database (not only same server database) and the same ODBC (ODBC VUM is 32-bit only).

My question is whether it is supported or not and I would like a source VMware information, not only "it works fine for me".

I can't find any definitive info on this VMware. Only something to wave in the installation and upgrade guides about or not to run in the same database ' ' (I guess they mean 'server') and it seems that the recommendation is to separate them for the 'large environments,' whatever that means.

The environment vSphere 4.1 is currently, and there are about 20 guests and 150 virtual machines.

If it is not supported, I guess the best way to go is to reinstall both from scratch?

    Thanks in advance!

    / Anders

Yes, it is a supported configuration.  Since VUM and vCenter using different tables, you can share the same DB

The database of the update manager that you use can be identical to the vCenter Server database. You can also use a
separate database, or you can use existing database clusters. For best results in a large scale environment, you
must use a dedicated Update Manager database that is located on one computer other than the
    the vCenter Server system database.

  • VCenter Server Update

In an environment with hosts of ESXi and vCenter server, ESXi 5.0 hosts have been updated to update the 2 just now. Everything works fine, however, Server 2012 64 bit does not appear as an option when you create a virtual computer in vCenter with the vSphere client. Research indicates prerequisites 2 update is necessary to do so, that is applied to the ESXi hosts. The vCenter server has not been updated and it is not possible to still go to U3. ISO has been uploaded to the vCenter update 2 with modules. What is the procedure to update the vCenter server. The update can be checked before hand and guests must stand, so I wanted to just get a sense of the update. What is the executable launched just for the new ISO? The installation as an update or new feature will install? Guests must go down? Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Yes, simply run the installer of vCenter and media when prompted on the vCenter server database, select upgrade the existing vcenter Server database... your virtual machines will not be affected and do not need to be moved to another host.

You're welcome and don't forget to award points for correct or helpful answers.

  • vCenter server is down and esxi server db server hosting is due

    Hello vmware experts,

I hope that you will be able to help me with this problem. Suddenly our vcenter server fails. I discovered that the vcenter Server database server is down. When I look back, the esxi itself host is having a problem.

I already rebooted the esxi. I tried to connect to this host again via vsphere client and at first, he says that it takes too much time to respond (this is the reason for the way I know that the host has a problem) then I restarted the console management officer. This time I was able to connect to the client via vsphere esxi host. Unfortunately, all virtual machines are showing unknown.

assuming that you have shared stored, you can always make a note of what the VCDB VM runs on (even if the guests are unkknow).  To connect to a different host, browse the shared data store and find the VCDB VM, there right click on the .vmx file and add to the inventory.  Then turn the VCDB VM.  You can do the same if your vCenter host is a virtual computer.  Once you get the two VM added to the inventory and power, you will find that things are a little easier to troubleshoot.

  • vCenter Server - rename the config files and moving datastore

Our vCenter VMware Server (4.1.0) is a virtual machine. The vCenter Server database is stored on a SQL Server that is also a virtual machine. The configuration files for the server vCenter and file a vmdk are located on a data store and the other vmdk file is located on another data store. This isn't a problem, but the parent folders that store these files have different names and do not reflect the name of the vCenter Server VM. Also the names of configuration files are different for the vmdk file names. I would like to move and rename files vmdk my vCenter Server to another data store and all the configuration files so that the parent folder that stores all the files has the same name as my vCenter Server VM and all of the files in the folder are on behalf of my vCenter Server VM.

What would be the best way to do this? Can I install the stand-alone converter on the vcenter Server and migrate the server? I have a vCenter Server Standard license. Thank you.

as above, use storage vmotion if possible else, you can use vmware converter...

  • Configuration of SQL 2008 R2, Enterprise Edition for vCenter Server 5.1

    Greetings to all seasons.

Kind of a newbie here. That's my lab environment.

I have always used the vCenter Server install Simple option that also installs the shipped Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 Express edition.

Now, I do an eval of vSphere 5.1 and I want to manually configure a database server using the Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition.

I know how to install the database server and it works. But I do not know how exactly set up a database for vCenter Server.

I looked at the guide Configuration / Installation of vSphere and I don't seem to be able to follow the preparation vCenter Server databases section, because I'm not a person to the database. Y at - it any other guide or a blog, I can follow? I searched a lot and found everything I was looking for. Thought I would ask here.

Here are the virtual machines I have.

    Lab - DC1 (domain controller)

    Lab - DC2 (domain controller)

    Lab-SQL1 (SQL 2008 R2, Enterprise Edition)

Lab-SQL2 (SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise - subsequently configure failover clustering)

    Lab-VC1(vCenter Server 1)

    Any help is appreciated!

Happy holidays.  Here is a link to another site with a nice installation guide for SQL 2008 for VMware.  Version 4.x, published in lonesysadmin.net was very helpful, so I'm sure that the 5.x update (have not read through it again) must be all too packed with useful tips.

  • vCenter Server referenced in VMview

    Good afternoon

Our environment VMview is centered around an old installation of ESX 3.5 with vCenter server of v4.0.0.10021. All of our ESX servers are 4.1i base and governed by a completely separate vCenter (v4.1.0.12319) server. My question is I want to gradually remove the old server vCenter, but as much as feared VMview isn't just "VirtualCenter servers" section that I need to change on the most recent vCenter Server? What should I be wary of?

    Kind regards
    Keith

PS - I'm looking to upgrade ESX 3.5 to 4.1i, if anyone has advice or suggestions for this also which would help greatly - it seems straight forward enough, but 22 years that makes me a cynical beast!

OK, I guess that the amount of work you need to do will be decided by your installation.   If you use complete desktop computers or clones associated with persistent desktop computers, you will need to go through the user data, http://communities.vmware.com/people/skg/blog/2011/01/01/moving-svi-pool-across-vcenter-server-keeping-user-data-and-ownership.

  • What will be lost if I use a new database for vCenter Server?

Currently, we use VC 2.5 U4 with database SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition.  We intend to migrate the SQL Server used by VC to SQL Server 2005 Express 2000 database.  We have tried the upgrade on-site of the VC database but without success.

In this way, we will create a new SQL Server 2005 Express for VC database.  We would like to see more performance statistics, the following items will be lost?

    (1) resource pool

    (2) cluster configuration

    (3) connect to the ESX host

    (4) configuration of NIC in ESX host

    (5) the allocation of resources for each virtual computer

We are very concerned by the Network Configuration of a particular ESX host that takes us a long time to repair.

    Thank you

The ESX host network configuration will remain as it is a host level setting.  With regard to the other elements:

    (1) Yes, you will lose your Resource Pools

    (2) your cluster configuration, including DRS rules, etc. will be lost

    (3) you will need to add each ESX host on your vCenter Server

    (4) as indicated, you will not lose your network configuration

    (5) If you set resources in a Resource Pool, then you who will lose.  If you set it on the virtual machine itself then I believe that you leave this setting.

You will also lose some other things, like all the permissions you applied at various levels of vCenter.

  • vCenter Server 5.1 fresh install database MSSQL w/box

    Hi all

Looking for advice on how best to manage a new installation of vCenter Server 5.1 using a MSSQL database out of area.  Have done some research and looked at some of the videos that are out there, but have not found quite what I'm looking for.  So, I thought I would post.  Be gentle - I'm a bit new to the vMware environment.

Here's my scenario.  And if there is a link/doc/post/video that covers what I'm after - very well.  Looking for a little help on searching for it.  If this isn't the case, direct responses will be fantastic.

-Need to build a 5.1 vCenter server and use a MSSQL off the coast of the MessageBox database.  Out the door, I started with 6 guests and 24 guests, which, as I understand it, is just a little bigger than SQL Express can handle.  And the footprint of the host/guest is likely to increase over time.

-Have available to build the DB MSSQL 2008 R2 cluster on.

-My company has vMWare/vCenter existing deployments, but my particular scenario is going to be a unique and independent facility.

-ESXi hosts will be 5.0 update 1 (to stay in our internal model of best practices).

-vCenter maybe 5.1 for purposes of property management.

-Also need to run the Update Manager, as I understand it, kind of excludes the version 'device' vcenter, or at the very least, a little complicated.

-Leaning towards the Simple installation of vCenter 5.1.  Know that this will launch the single sign on the server, the inventory Service and the vCenter Server installed.  And that the installation of the Update Manager will be a 4th installation (and hopefully last).

Where I am a little confused:

-Discrete databases how should I really?  A school of thought (and practical in our 'other' vMWare environment) is 1 DB for each app on Cree.  This seems a bit complicated, but if this is the way it must be, so be.

-I think I can run only a database and each of the 4 required applications would build/use the necessary table space they need.  Is this correct or am I far from base?

-1 single database, if feasible, should I use a master service flavoured AD account for everything, or should I watch different service AD for different functions accounts.

Not quite sure I'm being quite clear on what I'm after, fire so far with follow-up if necessary issues.

1 DB for SSO, 1DB for VC and 1 DB for MUV.

SSO DB needs to execute scripts (in your search for ISO for scripts to prepare your SQL DB:(:\Single Sign On\DBScripts\SSOServer\schema\mssql))

The inventory service has its own DB.
