Virtual MACHINE starts in EFI environment after crash

Hello world

I'm breaking my head on something that looks like a bug to me.

A few weeks ago, the ESXi host on that I was running VMs crushed (power fail) and after powering back and from virtual machines on this stand-alone host, one of the virtual machines did not start correctly.

This machine virtual runs Windows Server 2012 and booted up this time in the EFI environment.

After some research, the EFI configuration is gone. When opening the Boot Manager Maintenance upward and choose 'Start configuration Options', no options are listed. When you add a new boot option and using the backup function, the settings are lost instantly. When comparing the parameters with any other SMV 2012 I have running, Miss me a lot of configuration such as startup options and some driver options.

These two options will not save after closing the menu for adding these options. When you choose 'Start from a file' I can start the virtual computer by using the 'VOLUME LABEL\EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi No.' file. After the virtual machine restarts, it will be to the EFI environment.

It is very difficult to find information about the EFI BIOS so I hope anyone here have experience with it.

I even tried to restore the VM about 2 weeks before the accident, but even with the files of the virtual machine will start in EFI environment with no settings at all. So maybe the problem caused earlier; very weird! Also not to be able to save the new settings in the environment EFI seems very strange to me.

Thanks for the replies! =)

Hi René,.

Hmmm... There is something of very, very wrong with this file NVRAM.  Looks like that the power failure has corrupted the file NVRAM in a way that confuses the firmware irreparably.  I consider this new next week (next year!) when I'm back in the office and will introduce an internal bug report if I find something that we can make it more robust.

Although I generally recommend it not for VMS EFI, in your situation, your best course of action is probably the virtual computer power off, remove the file .nvram to the directory of the virtual machine (or rename it to something else, if you want to be extra careful), and power then it powered.  A fresh .nvram file will automatically create the virtual machine starts.  For the most part, reasonably normal Windows installations, the virtual machine must then be started automatically in the operating system installed.

(For the benefit of other readers of the forum who may come across this thread, I repeat: do not delete a virtual machine EFI NVRAM memory, unless you understand the consequences!)  "It seems that there is rather than remove the NVRAM in this particular situation and very few others.)

Please let me know if that gets things going again!

And I'm going to one of our regulars of the forum, WoodyZ, avoid having to make his regular situation comment: If you haven't already done so, you can consider investing in an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to keep your system running through power cuts or to allow at least a normal instead of a hardware failure stop.

See you soon,.

    Hello-

Over the weekend, we had a power outage in our data center which resulted in the loss of power to our HP blades that make up our ESX cluster.  Power was restored after a few minutes, and fed up ESX Server, VirtualCenter, which works as a virtual machine, does not, no has yet no virtual machines.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might have happened?   For storage, we have an HP EVA SAN fiber.

  • Virtual MACHINE starts automatically after a power outage of the entire site?

    Hello

    We use ESXi 5.5.

If there is a power for the datacenter failure, ESXi hosts must be restarted when power is resumed.

We wonder if VMs will be launched automatically to the top?   If not, this means that we must allow the "starting the Virtual Machine / stop option.

If we put a number of virtual machines in "automatically start", such as VM1, VM2, VM3 on ESXi Server one, VM4 VM5 ESXi Server b.   Virtual machines are migrated between ESXi servers and how they can keep the boot sequence?

Thanks for your advice. He agrees with your saying that the start / stop sems to be buggy.

It's only disable it every time that you enable VMware HA.

But it works (if enabled) and may be useful to define how the system starts up.

  • Will be the virtual machine starts on another host (during the blackout) if he can't switch to Maintenance Mode?

    Hello

We use a cluster with 2 5.1 ESXi hosts.  When attempting to place an ESXi host in Maintenance mode, he failed and said "not enough resources to satisfy configured level of failover for HA.

We would like to know, just in case where one of these ESXi hosts failed, VMs will be start on another ESXi host (at least some) or all of them will be down (i.e. None of them start)?  If no virtual machine will be migrated, we will change our level of failover for HA.

    Thank you

This occurs when you enable admission control on your HA cluster. When the failure of the host occurs and you have Admission control is enabled, it will let all market on the other host machines because it violates the constraints of availability.

If you turn this off all VM is switched even if you do not have enough resources to accommodate all the s VM on a single host. On a long term, I would say that you have sufficient resources to allow this to happen. But for now, you can turn it off and try.

  • Virtual MACHINE running on two hosts after hung vmotion

    Hello

I started a VMotion of virtual machine by host A to host B. The request got hung at 65% for several hours. I restarted the VCenter service, registered to vsphere. The process was running is longer, but now the virtual machine appears on the Host A and host B.

The Cluster-'Virtual Machine' tab displays the virtual machine and cycles between two hosts seconds couple?

Anyone seen this before? How can I fix it? Thanks in advance!

First of all, it's impossible.  A virtual machine cannot be in 2 places at once.  It's just in the transition.

Secondly, vCenter manages the process but it doesn't actually do the vMotion, ESX hosts are.

What is happening is life of the virtual machine on the host only until the end of the evolution towards the other host (somewhere around 97%) when the transfer is confirmed with the new host.

Best thing to do is to restart the services of management on both hosts and see if that frees the vMotion.

  • Virtual machine starts as soon as I open VMWare

I think I said to VMWare Fusion to start my Windows XP virtual machine automatically everytime I open VMWare fusion.  I don't like it and want to go back, but could not find the setting anywhere.  Can someone tell me where to change that, so I open VMWare Fusion and then separately tell him to open my virtual machine separately?

    Thanks in advance.

The setting can be found in the Virtual Machine library - click on the orange star to turn this option off.

    Hello

    Untitled.png

    Hello

This is the VMware KB which provide a workaround to enable this option for VMs on ESXi hosts in cluster HA active.

VMware KB: Automatic Virtual Machine Startup / Shutdown in ESXi hosts in a cluster VSA is turned off

Last time (couple of years back), when I was researching on this topic, I found that these settings are applied only when the virtual machine is on the same host ESXi, and once his migrated to another ESXi host for this VM autostart option is lost and needs to be reconfigured again. I don't know if this behavior changed with new versions of vSphere.

    I hope this helps.

  • Unable to start the virtual machine after failing to remove the snapshot

Recently, I tried to delete a snapshot on a Windows XP virtual machine in VMware server 2.0. After a few minutes, the operation has failed, then the GUI crashed. I was not able to manage one of my virtual machines until I rebooted the server. My other virtual machines still work fine. I can't just run the virtual machine on which I tried to remove the snapshot. This virtual machine is very important to me and I would try to get it back. Does anyone have advice? Also, I upgraded this version of VMware server 1.x to 2.x, so please let me know if this may have something to do with this problem. Thanks in advance.

An additional note. If the virtual machine starts, I suggest that you run chkdsk, just to make sure that there are no problems with the file system of the client.

  • Windows XP mode virtual machine does not start after the upgrade to Windows 10

    Hello

After the upgrade to Windows 7 Pro for Windows 10 Pro, my virtual Windows XP machine (which was created from the "XP" mode in Windows 7) no longer starts.

    It shows:

This system is not allowed to run "Windows XP Mode". Now, the virtual machine will be turned off.

How can I activate the Windows XP Mode in Windows 10 Pro? I mean, I have not lost my right to run Windows XP Mode, just because I've upgraded to Windows 10, right?

    VMware Workstation 12.1

    Hello

How can I activate the Windows XP Mode in Windows 10 Pro? I mean, I have not lost my right to run Windows XP Mode, just because I've upgraded to Windows 10, right?

I fear that the statement is pretty much on the mark.

Microsoft caught only supported XP Mode in Windows 7, it has been since Windows 8.

    See also:

    https://support.Microsoft.com/en-us/KB/2724115

You might be able to extract the folder integer vhd it and import it in VMware Workstation as a separate virtual machine. In the end, 'XP Mode' just was running a virtual machine in your Windows 7 after all.

  • Cannot start the unique virtual machine after you have patched ESXi to 4.1.0 800830

I patched a standalone ESXi host yesterday, leading a successful ESXi 4.1.0 800830 upgrade.

Can you browse the data store where is stored the than VM and check what files you see in the directory for this virtual machine? The error claimed that it cannot find a file of virtual disk for this virtual machine.

Restart all of the services, they seem to stop and start cutting.
