Virtualization, product Suggestions

Hi, I'm relatively new to virtualization, but have a few questions on products to get a better idea of what I need for what I want to do:

Currently, we have a handful of servers (about 12), and I'm looking for a better way to manage all this, because I'm really one of the only SHE directed people where I work.

We run mainly windows, as well as a few linux servers machines.  What I want is a better environment of data center for the recovery of disaster scenarios (if a server where just fail, or the place to get wiped out by an asteroid.)  A SAN will be made soon.

What I need, is a product that works independently of the OS (basically, the VMWare product should be the operating system) which allows me to make backups of the virtual disc itself, while in the case of physical server failure, I can start a new instance of this server on another physical box.

The product must be able to run the hardware-independent Virtual Machines, so that when our treatment needs to intensify, the hardware upgrade is a minor task.

I'm sure that VMware has a product like this, I'm not sure exactly which product to use.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

Looks like what you want is to VMware ESX or ESXi product.  These are type 1 hypervisors running on the bare metal.  According to the levels of availability you want (or can afford), you can go on VMware Infrastructure.  Have the SAN in place will also be an added bonus, when you move forward.

Good luck!

  • Because of the Extensions of virtualization ESXi MANDATE Intel, what other products?

This may seem obvious, but I already said x 86 virtualization extensions to improve the performance of the virtual machine, but are not required to run virtual machines.

I installed ESXi 4.0 on an HP Proliant DL380 G4 of second hand.  The processor specifications are as follows:

    2 x 3.40 GHz

    800 MHz front side bus

    2 MB of L2 Cache

Cela rising site Intel here: http://processorfinder.Intel.com/list.aspx?ProcFam=528 gives me a shortlist of 3 processors, which none have 'Intel virtualization technology'.

I have managed to install ESXi 4.0 without problem but cannot install Ubuntu Server Edition on a virtual machine, as it says I need a disc compatible i686.  (I tried both 32 and 64 bit discs without result).  However, I am able to boot from the drive natively without all these error messages.

In the BIOS of the machine, I can find no mention of virtualization extensions, so I am lost to what is the problem.

If this is the case, are there any alternatives for me to virtualize this machine? (i.e. ESXi 3.5, ESX)

    Thanks in advance

It takes on hosts for 64-bit clients Intel VT - x.  See KB 1003945.  VT - x is not required for 32-bit clients.  This is true for all VMware virtualization products.

  • Advice of virtualization to test Web sites / / multiprocessor environment

just a quick survey on some virtualization products. I am after a solution for my Web development team test websites and thought I would check with you.

Scenario: The team of Web developers who need to test websites in different browsers on cross-platform - flavours XP / / Vista maybe Ubuntu Linux

Solution: Machine dedicated remote log-in with various OS / image access. the concurrent user log-ins / / or simply the ability to run computers invited in a multiprocessor environment

The closest comparison product is virtual server microsoft except that I do not need to run any any server software and must be able to web developers to log on remotely and use the resources.

Any suggestions / / direction would be much appreciated!

    < Thank you / >

I would look at VMware Server or ESXi - these two products allow for virtual machines running multple with different operating systems - you would be able to use the RDP clients or the VM Console provided by the two.

Hello, I have a real copy of Windows XP (in a box), but I would like to use one of these virtual machine images (Images of VPC), expiring August 9, 2009.   I wonder if it would be possible to activate the VPC image with my real product key?

I was wondering if its possible because he can save me installation of service packs and all of time clean install using my really old XP disc.

    Mozillakilled salvation,

Thank you for using Microsoft Vista answers forum.

Yes, when you use VPC images, you install the operating system, and it is treated as any other facility with the same licensing requirements. This looks like a reasonable alternative to a dual-boot machine since you don't have to reboot to switch between operating systems.

  • 12 c virtualization Tuxedo taken in charge of features compared to 11 g

    Hello

We plan on going live with the upgrade of Tuxedo 12 c on top an old version of tuxedo, but I would like to know, before that did take place, if there is no limitation in the virtualization taken in charge by the latter. In comparison to Tuxedo 11 g, are there differences? These differences relate only to the platform / OS used?

Check the link below, I noticed that some items (like HP - UX) supports only the FMW Oracle 10 g

    http://www.Oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/IAS/OracleAS-supported-virtualization-089265.html#oraclefusionmiddleware11g

So, basically what I want to know is what are the differences between the two versions (12 and 11g) and if there is a patch planned to make these virtualizations supported on the future.

    Thanks in advance,

    brunno Attorre

    Hi Bruno.

Smoking is not a virtualization feature. It is a separate product.

Tuxedo binaries are built and released for specific platforms. If the virtualization product supports a Tuxedo 12 c platform is released for

then the binary Tuxedo 12 c will be executed on it. Patches created for Tuxedo don't take virtualization into consideration.

Tuxedo 12 c has added a lot of new features that Tuxedo 11 g does not support.

All applications that you built by using an earlier version of Tuxedo must be rebuilt with the new binaries / libraries released before they will work.

(i.e. all applications that you built using Tuxedo 11 g will have to be rebuilt with Tuxedo 12 binary c / libraries before they will work with Tuxedo 12 c)

Here's the matrix certification Tuxedo (free vs platforms):

  • What is x 86 all the Techniques of virtualization?

    Dear Experts of VMware;

I know the ESX(I) have three x 86 virtualization techniques:

    1-binary Translation (The older)

2-material assistance to the (The one that follows - which have a lot of performance problems due to the lack of MMU virtualization support and lacks to cooperate quickly with the MMU virtualization software)

3-paravirtualized (The most recent technique it have the ability to change the core of the guest operating system to perform an execution performance by using APIs is communication between the virtual machine and Hypervisor.) This makes using VMware tools and VMI kernel enabled for VMI Linux kernels).

I also found that the MMU & CPU paravirtual are supported only for 32 bit OS, I have no why he provided only for 32 bit OS.

Finally, I surprised when I know that VMware support is no longer the VMI in future versions of virtualization products.

Did I miss something here? or what plan of VMware for virtualization performance? Are it will depend only in the first 2 techniques and stop the paravirtual for CPU & MMU and support it to storage drivers and networking only!?

    .... Oh... I'm so confused. !!!

Please, I hope that someone support me with the correct answer... or papers...

    Thanks for the replies.

    Fady

By the VMkernel resource management is an essential feature.  Planning enough vCPUs, allocation of memory and conservation and management of I/O is the functional Center of the hypervisor, and is not a trivial task.  Be able to unload things like shadow page tables and output entry/VM VM activity for privileged CPU instructions (interruptions, etc.) leaves more room in the vmkernel for other tasks.

Paravitrualized ECS (vmxnet) and for guests paravirtualized SCSI controllers will not have anywhere for awhile; they are now required to e/s high-performance of a virtual machine.

There are a number of documents of the performance under the vSphere technical resources that enter the details on the CPU scheduler and the VMkernel memory management features.

  • paravirtualization or virtualization on os

    Hi all

I'm confused about VMware ESX. Is it a

    -paravirtualization

    -virtualization on os

    -hypervisor virtualization

    -on hardware virtualization

It seems that it is the two paravirtualization, because you can enable this option for a virtual machine, but also the virtualization hypervisor, because it's a hypervisor "bare metal".

What I need is a virtualization which is like a small Linux on it to run a daemon (I think it's what is the administration of esx console) Interior I can start, manage and access the virtual machines on the same host. Is ESX the solution for me?

    Thanks for your reply.

    ESX is

    -a hypervisor

-uses a binary conversion or paravirtualization for the CPU

    -can use the paravirtualized drivers

If you mean hosted virtualization by "virtualization on OS", no, ESX is a bare metal virtualization, what you might call "on hardware virtualization. VMware Server or VMware Workstation are hosted virtualization products. The difference is that the hypervisor of these need a regular BONE under so that with ESX(I) hypervisor works directly on the bare,

  • I need help to create a virtual machine - I am new to virtualization.

    Hello

I am new to virtualization and I chose the merger.  I have a hard drive from a Dell died in a USB enclosure.  I have also the XP restore disks.  Can I create a virtual machine from this? Converter?

    Hello

No, you can't legally. Your Windows XP has an OEM license that connects the OS for the DELL died. If you ask MS then the Windows operating system died with the DELL...

Is this fair? Not IF you ask me. Can you work around it? Maybe... but its going to be a long and painful process.

Restore XP disks have the same problem... basically... you can always try it, but I fear that you will not be able to activate the operating system because it is related to DELL hardware.

You will need a version of windows not OEM to install on the merger (or any other virtualization product, this is a Microsoft limitation, not a virtualization)

Hi plc775and welcome to the VMware communities!

The version of Debian you downloaded is intended to be run directly on an ARM processor.  VMware virtualization products virtualize the architecture of x 86 / x 64, no ARMS.  You will need to download a version of x 86 / x 64 Debian (I suggest the "amd64" version) to run in VMware Workstation.  You can then configure a build environment cross-targeting ARMS in your VM 7 Debian amd64.

    I hope this helps!

Ok. You will need to ensure that the ip addresses you assign to your virtual machines are in the same subnet that the adapter created by the installation of vmware. Once you get the fixed basic network installation, you can treat these virtual machines like any machine in your data center. Forget the vm console and access it exactly as you would for any remote server - putty for the Linux and Windows Remote Desktop to the Windows machine.

To a prompt on the host computer, post this:

    c:> ipconfig -all

You will get feedback on multiple net cards, of which two are identified as with vmware - vmNet1 and vmNet8. Note the IP addresses of the two. We'll need later.
You'll also need to know how you have configured the network cards on your virtual machine - NAT, bridged, hostonly?

Note that these issues are out of scope for this forum. I don't mind helping, but I don't have an installation of vmware for details of the reference.

Which have really tried to do? ( Data transfer )

It's pretty vague. Exactly how did you try to "Exchange data"? A SQL using a db_link? import/export? Pigeons?

I don't know, how to set up the ip address and the necessary information for the windows database.

Configuration of an IP address is purely a matter of admin OS and out of range for this database forum.

  • Is there a way to limit the feature browse Datastore ESX/ESXi 3.5?

    Hi all, new poster here.

We have an environment VMware ESX for QA and Production which is doing slowly on the ground.  All the big teams in our company have embraced ESX except one - the Active Directory team.  Currently they virtualize production DCs on VMware Server 2.0.  Their reasoning for ESX or ESXi moves do not, is that in VMware Server that they can control access to the host OS (Windows Server 2003) using their established and quite restrictive of ad groups and policies.  What they want to avoid at all costs is a person to connect to the host OS and copy hard files for use offline, and restore elsewhere for purposes of nefariosu.  They manage their own VMware Server environment, so that they control access to the virtual machines via the VI Client as well.

More in the Infrastructure team, we designed a robust ESX environment with good change control and patch management.  We also organize our VMware on shiny new hardware connected to a San.  Some members of the AD team would like to take our material and the patching process, but they are concerned about people (we) copy their hard through the VI client.  They prefer also ESXi for ESX because they love congestion reduced, reduced the risk of vulnerability, to assume that without a security environment local to manage access to the hosts on the host, ESXi can be managed by AD.

My suggestion to them is going to be to set up their own ESXi host and manage and patch it themselves, unless there is a way of:

    (a) manage somehow permissions with this granularity that my team can patch the OS ESXi (VMware Update Manager) but not browse the data store and copy hard files

    or

    (b) restrict the ability to browse files hard storage of data/copy via the VI Client at all.

Backups/restorations would be done through VCB and be the LUN for virtualized domain controllers I masked the rest of the environment.

    Any thoughts?

First of all, there is a question of trust, which I think can be solved through technology.  Member of your team will need to have rights for the uber (administrator or Datacenter administrator) in order to obtain concrete results.  In addition, if your team can give THEM rights, so you can give yourself rights just as easily.

That said, there may be some things you can do.  If you configure a permission class that doesn't have a store of data/files access management, give permission to your group on a specific host, then who should be close to what you are looking for.  You could probably even use vmotion and DRS for maintenance.
