Vista - recently changed documents

"In Windows Vista, is it possible to disable the feature that stores recently changed documents.

Is this just a feature in vista?  If I update to Windows 7 it will have same functionality as Vista?

Here is an article on how to disable the service: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/72816-recent-items-list.html.  It also has a link to an article on how to clear the history, so it does not appear again if the feature is reactivated.

In my view, that will solve your problem.  I suspect that the feature is available in Windows 7 but can probably be disabled there as well if you want - but to be sure, you should ask in the Windows 7 Forums:http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windows7.

I hope this helps (I think it is).

Good luck!

If you did an upgrade and not a clean install, they must remain on your drive. Do a search of *.jpg, *.jpeg and see what you get. If I remember correctly, you will have a folder windows.old that they appear in. You can use Windows Explorer if you want to look in your records in the Windows.Old directory.

  • Records "recently changed".

In the Vista operating system, the files and folders that automatically appear in the files "Recently changed" stay there indefinitely?  They use additional disk space to stay in these records?  If so, can I delete these files without losing them in the folder "documents", etc. they came?

"Recently changed" is not a folder is a saved search.  There are no files inside so that they take up space.  Delete the files listed in the saved search will delete the original files, so do NOT unless you want to permanently delete.

  • Stop the "Recently changed" archive in your history folder

Do all the files that you use or access appear automatically in the folder "recently changed"? Can you stop the files to be indexed in this file?  I also have files that I've trashed and yet they still appear in the recently changed folder.  What can I do about it?  Can I change the properties to stop this archiving of my story?

There is no list. The system will search the index file and creates it each time you click the search folder. Everything is stored in the search folder are the instructions on how to perform the search.

The index should contain only references to the files that have been deleted. Maybe now you have reset those will stop to reappear.

You can also try this Fixit http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_search/en-us

If you do not want the index must be created, you can use one of the following methods of indexing:

    http://www.mydigitallife.info/disable-and-turn-off-Windows-Vista-search-indexer-and-indexing-service/

This can affect performance and remove other features of the system.

There is nothing don't delete you saved search folders. This will not remove the underlying files. See this article for more information:

  • Recently changed research - lack of elements

This research has been working well - I use it often to find modified files I need to back up and made sure the indexing options point to all the necessary records.

But now with some extension - .cap (Capella Notation software) that I started to use the files do not appear. I checked the list of File Types in indexing options (tools of research... Indexing options... Advanced... File types) and the extension (.cap) is checked and it appears with the appropriate icon.

Also the affected folders are indexed - other files in the same folders are appearing in their correct (by date) position in the research recently changed. The problem file appears in the search for indexed locations, it does not appear in the recently changed.

Also, the properties of the appearance of the file OK - that of to say that they have the modified Date that appears correctly, and I created a copy of the file in the same folder, then change its extension .doc - makes it unusable, but just to check - and he appeared recently changed!

It seems therefore that the extension is causing the problem?
I have rebuilt the index, but this has not fixed the problem.

Any suggestions much appreciated. Thank you

It looks like types of unknown recorded files to windows do not appear on the recently changed. Two of my programs ProShow Producer and RoboMaster do not show their files in the recently changed folder that both have "Recent files" on their menus file. I tried to create a file to another MediaAvatar program that can create two files .html and .swf (both animated) types in a project, the two files have been properly saved to the desktop but checked the file change recently showed that the file .html as the .swf file wasn't there.

The work around I found was to create a link to the file folder registered under favorite links by dragging the folder to the favorite links area the file when the blue text "create link in links" appears under the folder.

It's something similar on the link below:

  • File "recently changed".

I have Vista Home Premium and all recently discovered, in my case "Recently changed" under my 'computer', much (800 +) .jpeg and .xml files images I didn't upload or have no idea whence they came. In fact, I don't know yet is what a .xml file. However, it seems these files to download on my computer whenever they want (usually at start-up). Among these files unwanted are files that I use and that you have changed recently, but most are unknown to me. I figured that some virus/malware, but, using AVG Free that I installed, it found nothing. What is happening and how to stop it and remove all those unwanted downloads?

Try to install Malwarebytes anti-malware , it seems to stop connections to my computer, I use a P2P program download and it constantly throws a ball upward on the lower right corner, indicating correctly blocked potentially malicious Web site: xx.xxx.x.xxx. Weather this fixed your problem or not, it's a good program running on your computer, and you can use it free or pay for a version full way AVG.

  • Masses of jpeg files, unwanted in "recently changed".

    file can not find hereMasses

Masses of jpeg files, unwanted in "recently changed".  Impossible to delete, get the message that they are no longer at this location.  Where did they come from?  How can I get rid of them?

Do you mean recent items on the Start Menu, or do you mean C:\Users\\Recent?  Are these these files recognize you or are they all strange to you?  I don't know where they came from-maybe there was a mistake in the Vista program or maybe they came to the temporary internet files or it could be a variety of reasons - it is very difficult to say.  It would be useful to know if you all recognize.

First of all, I would make sure that the original files are all where they are supposed to be and do not have somehow been transferred.

Try using one of the following free products to remove the files.  Unlocker to:http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Unlocker.shtml or file Assassin http://www.malwarebytes.org/fileassassin.php (with or without forcing the deletion: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/12/27/force-delete-cannot-delete-locked-or-in-used-files-or-folders-with-fileassassin/). These programs often work when normal functions remove Vista not work correctly.  After back if none of these programs does not work to remove the files either.

I do one and then confirm that it has been also removed from its normal location.  Then try a couple just to be safe.  Once you are sure that the originals are not as well removed, then you can delete everything else.  If the originals ARE deleted, we have a different problem.  Post back and we'll try to solve it.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

  • Can someone explain please the NEW, process RECENTLY CHANGED to "bookmark all tabs" in Firefox 40.0?

The process of "bookmark all tabs" apparently has recently changed. The window "New bookmark" that opens after choosing ' bookmark all tabs "does not make clear what needs to be done now to save all open tabs. It was a simple matter of just to name the folder. Now, it's not not clear to me that parts of the pop-up window must be filled to actually get the tabs open bookmarks instead of just get an empty folder called [name of folder].

Thanks for any help you can provide!

  • How can I delete my folder "recently changed" without deleting all my files?

Hi I just want to have a clear "recently changed record" so no one can snoop on me? I have curious people around me. Is there a way to clear the record without losing everything? should I highlight all and delete? Thank you.

I'd say just delete the entire contents of the C:\Users\\searches folder (where the recently modified record is kept). That will NOT delete your files. The above method is better than becaese the list to delete the shortcuts (which has everything in recent xxxxx files) will never updated again.
Delete the contents of the recently modified files will not remove files that their link.
