VMotion and mobile readers of other data stores

We are new to VMware and wonder if it is possible to move a single of a disk HARD virtual is in a different data store to customers? For example a customer server that has an operating system drive and a data reader. We built a data store of "The OS" on our storage a data store 'Data' and an ISO data store for the operating system and other ISO images. When customer's server has been built the disk 'Data' has been accidentally placed on our database 'ISO '. So is it possible to simply move the drive of customer data from the data bank "ISO" to the court to erase the disc and recreate in the correct correct store? Looking at the vMotion options in the client web it seems that if we pass a 'reader' we go together or have I missed something?

Hello

You must click on the button Advanced settings in the wizard for vMotion to the point where you choose the target. You can set a separate objective for each single VMDK (and the VMX file)

  • How long does take to dismantle and re-scan a single data store

    Hi all

I am currently using vSphere 5.0 to manage 3 x 5 ESXi hosts. I am trying to use the host VM 2 for surebackup data store and virtual laboratory of Veeam. I had already used the same data store and removed. Now try when I set up again on the same data store, it generates the error Create NAS Datastore - specified key, the name or the identifier already exists.

After reading about the issue, I've seen the way to solve this must dismantle and Reanalyze the data store that produces the error. As I've never done this before that I was wondering if someone could share their own experiences? I need to move the exisitng s VM from the data store before I have to dismount and perform a new analysis or any point throughout this process?

Some details on the data store:

Composed of disks SAS 4 x 300 GB in RAID 5 with a total of 831,50 Gb. There are 8 VM running on this server using 400 GB on the Go 831,50. 4 virtual machine are essential and must be operational during the time leading to opening (9 - 5.30 pm). These total 222 + 39 + 33 + 69 = 363 GB. The data store is not shared between hosts.

The migration of virtual machine for the other guests, I'm able to estimate (if necessary). What I'm really interested in is the length of time that it will dismantle and Reanalyze the data in question store.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Kind regards

    Haydn

You must move the virtual machines before you take it apart

or close the virtual machine and to unsubscribe to esxi.

given that the data store is not shared, you must do the migration of data store for virtual machines such as migration cold.

Disassemble and analyze new shouldn't take more time, let's say less than 2 minutes if each works fine.

  • Clone VM and problem with selection of data store

    Hello

When I tried to clone a virtual machine that has distributed records in several data stores, I never had the chance to select the store multiple data for the clone, he asks only for the unique data store and discharge all vmkdks to this one, is it possible that I can choose several data stores?  for example: I want to drive D: to E: drive to datastoreC c, datastoreB: diving in datasoreA

    Thank you

    Beatrice

    Hi Alain,

When you run the clone operation, when you are prompted to select the destination data store, don't you have an Advanced button? If you click on it, you should have access to a menu where you can choose a different destination for each virtual disk.

  • Migration of virtual machines from a data store, and then delete the data store?

    Hello

I have a future deployment this month and my Director wants to build a new RAID 6 array, create a store of data with the new table and then move all the VMS to the newly created data store.

Then he asked me to take the old data store and remove it and the available space between the deleted data store and other stores of data in our shared environment. The question is when the new raid is created and vm has migrated to the new data store, which is the best way to remove the data store empty and make sure that the space available for other data stores? Any help would be appreciated...

    Greg ~.

If all controls are met, you can go ahead and take it apart without any problem.

    I have re-iterate below checks:

-No virtual machine is in the data store

-The data store is not part of the cluster data store

-The data store is not managed by the DRS storage

-IGCS is disabled for this data store

-The data store is not used for vSphere HA heartbeat.

Especially highlighted 2 controls. Please note that SIOC can be enabled on the data without SDR photo store

  • Try to re-signing and mount a data store

    Hi all

I'm stuck trying to develop a "workflow" and hoping you can help. We need to make a daily DR copy of a production database and edit this copy on another virtual machine. The database feeds a hard with his own logic unit number and is heavily used, so we can suspend only wrote a few minutes.

    Here are the high-level workflow:

    1. Suspend the entries in the database
    2. Create a virtual copy (snapshot) of the LUN on our 3PAR
    3. Resume database entries
    4. Export (present) the virtual copy of the 3PAR to the ESXi cluster
    5. A rescan storage on all hosts in the cluster
    6. Add the LUN and re-signature of the data store
    7. Mount the VMDK from the new LUN to the VM test

I fight a bit to make the portion of ESXi work. I can re-scan storage successfully on my host, but I'm not able to go up and re-signing of the data store newly discovered. Onyx told me to use resignatureUnresolvedVmfsVolume_Task , but the action failed with "TypeError: cannot find the resignatureUnresolvedVmfsVolume_Task function in the object (Instance) DynamicWrapper: [VcHostSystem]-[class com.vmware.vmo.plugin.vi4.model.VimHostSystem]" I run 5.5.2 vRO/vCO and don't have the library installed vi4 nor do I have all the actions that will be re-signing a volume.

So I wonder, ResignatureUnresolvedVmfsVolume_Task has been deprecated and replaced by something else? Or did someone knows a library/plugin that I can add to vRO who will give me the opportunity to re-signing a data store?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    See you soon!

    Hello

The error message, it seems you are trying to call the method resignatureUnresolvedVmfsVolume_Task() on the object of type VcHostSystem. something like that

    var task = hostSystem.resignatureUnresolvedVmfsVolume_Task(spec);

The problem is that resignatureUnresolvedVmfsVolume_Task() is not a method of type VcHostSystem, but in VcHostDatastoreSystemcharacters, therefore, you get this error.

To fix it, you must obtain an object of type VcHostDatastoreSystem. Research in the API Explorer, you should be able to get VcHostDatastoreSystem object VcHostSystem object through the configManager property (which returns an object of type VcHostConfigManager), then property of datastoreSystem . Something like the following code:

    var task = hostSystem.configManager.datastoreSystem.resignatureUnresolvedVmfsVolume_Task(spec);

I don't have a good environment to test, but it should work.

    I hope this helps.

  • Cancellation of the assignment and reassign the data store by using different LUNS that datastore has not appeared.

    Hi all

I have a data store after vdisk1 I have not assigned the vdisk to data store and reread the esxserver, the data store has disappeared.

Again, I assigned the vdisk using the same number of logical unit as before and reread the esxserver, datastore appeared again return.

But if I use a different assignment vdisk lun and on a new analysis of data store does not appear.

Can someone tell me if the LUN must be even to see the store of data back again.

    If so why. ?

Is there a vmware documentation to substantiate this claim.

    concerning

    Neela

What do you mean by vdisk1?  The data store are stored as metadata on the LUN, when is formatted VMFS.  If you remove the LUN the VMFS is sitting on, then Yes, the data store will disappear.  If you only remove the vmdk who lives on this data store, then no, the data store must remain as it is, and you should be able to move the vmdk on the data store as needed.

  • Issue of data store

    Hello

Currently I have a disk (SSD) running the operating system and of my virtual machines.  I want to consolidate all of my machines at home on this machine.  I want to reuse the 3ware 9650se card to run a Raid1 and have a few VMs there to act as file servers.  I also want to have a single SATA drive for a VM acting under the name of backup.

For recovery purposes, lets say if I have to reinstall the ESXi, the other data store on the SATA drive is recoverable?  Maybe even the readers on the 3ware if map I have reinstall the driver for the card?

    TIA,

    TT

    Evening,

I'm not sure what you're asking... but here's my knife to 100%.  If you have two hard disks:

Disc 1: Has ESXi and some vm

    Disc 2: VM only

If you want to reinstall ESXi on disc 1, this could be done without destroying the virtual machine, as long as the current score has room for ESXi installation.

    Thank you

  • Can a virtual machine cause several discs in separate data stores?

I have 2 data warehouses, each on their own RAID array.  The intention was to put the VM OS in a store of data and secondary VM disks in the other data store.  For example, we would be a small OS disc in datastore1 and there will be a secondary drive that the OS could use for storing files or databases in datastore2.  However, once the first drive is created, and I'm going to create a second disk, I have no option to specify where we created/located.  By default, it is automatically in the same location as the first disc.  I see that I can move it to datastore1 2 using 'Browse the data store', but the virtual machine is not aware that the disk has been moved.

Is this scenario possible or each VM disks remain in the same data store?

You can specify a different data store for vdisks, but it is not recommended to place different vdisks in different data stores for the same VM. Things like vMotion and HA do not, or will not function properly if you do this.

IF you do not have other choice, but to do this, duing her 'create disc' step by adding a secondary/additional drive on the virtual machine, you will see the location section. This is where you use the Browse button, or enter the path, to the another data store where the disc files will reside.

I would advise against using the data stores different/double for the same VM. From a point of view logisitical she can make management a nightmare. I did once, and try to consolidate the various files in a single data store (later) was a bitch and a half...

  • ODI file data store

    Hi all

I have a confusion about the physical and logical length in the ODI file data store.

    I have a fixed-width file where a c2 col had datatype as string (30).

I've set this column in the data as string store > physical length 30 > logic length 30

My interface failed with error as '.

    ORA-12899: value too large for column 'S0_IDM '. «C$ _0S0_EAGLE_DWHCDC_CHRG_MST ".» "" "C2_CHARGE_DESC" (real: 31, maximum: 30).

When I increased the logical length to 255, the interface worked fine.

Being always the same 30 physical length.

    How different is it?

Any help on this will be appreciated.

    Thanks and greetings

    Reshma

This isn't the official documentation, but here's my point of view, after a few moments of reflection

Everything you do in the ODI Designer is inspired by the logical architecture. Only when running it manifested in a physical implementation i.e. connection strings are materialized etc. When you perform an integration ODI creates usually a few temporary tables prefixed with C$, I$ etc to be able to perform the necessary data movement and the transformations needed to, for example, to fill a data target (table) store. In your example, your flat file is materialized in such a temporary table before that its content is manipulated (or not) and loaded in the target data store. When ODI generates this code that he uses the logical length emitted in the DDL that generates temporary table column lengths, the physical column is ignored.

Now in your scenario is not a problem as constraints such as these do not matter to the physical file version knowledge if you were to write to the file, that it would not matter if you wrote return 255 characters or 31. This could be a problem if you were using database tables and varying the logical vs physical lengths but generally you reverse engineer tables from database using ODI rather than manually doing so makes better.

Anyway, in short, I think that the logical lengths should be taken as representative which will manifest itself in the materialization of the temporary objects used to manged / transform the data from the source models (tables$ CAN) and target (I have tables$) while the physical lengths indicate what the underlying physical representation of these models are in reality.

EDIT: after reading some logical documentation actually represents the length while physics is related the number of bytes required to store the data. Therefore, you could have a situation with multibyte characters where the physical length could be greater than the logical length but not really the other way around.

  • Rename files within the data store

    Hi all

I'm trying to rename some folders and files in my local data store.

That's what I see in my local data store

    /

    TestBiz-(il s'agit d'une machine Virtuelle)

    . SDD.SF

    TestNav-(il s'agit d'une machine Virtuelle)

    Apps

    images

    TestBiz contains

    TestBiz01.vmdk

    TestBiz01 - 000001.vmdk

    TestBiz01.vmx

    TestBiz01.nvram

    VMware.log

    TestBiz01.vmsd

Now my problem is the following.  The names of the two virtual machines must be lit.  TestBiz must be TestNav.  If I rename not only the record, but the files themselves who will break my servers?

I am aware of the mixture to the top, but I don't want others in the future to get confused.

    Any help would be great

    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the community,

There was a current discussion on VMs rename (change the name of files and folders in data warehouses) which also contains links to some articles in the KB. However, in your case, the virtual machine has an active snapshot, and you should definitely remove the snapshot before you rename the virtual computer!

BTW. where the virtual machine is managed in a vCenter server environment, you can automatically rename the virtual machine by changing the name of the virtual machine in the inventory of the GUI and then he migrate to another data store.

  • Script for the content data store

    Hello

I'm new in the world of Vmware of scripts.

I used powercli and real working examples of scripts to find my way.

I am trying to create an inventory of the existing infrastructure of vmware.

I have a list of all the VMS and their data store, but I also need a data store content.

    As:

a list of all the stores of data in a data center.

Download all the contents of the data store (folders, files vmdk, iso files, other files)

A list of all the folders / files with VMservers still known in the inventory.

The goal is to know if there are any files/VMservers on the data store, which are no longer in use and to check if we have duplicate in other data stores files

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Try something like

Hi all, I'm trying to retire a LUN and storage, it is sitting on, but have several guests that are displayed as on this data store in vSphere.  The strange thing is all show space 0.00 bytes used, and if I browse the data store there aren't any records related to the expectations of the customers.  I believe that clients in question may have their primary storage on this data store at some point in the past.  I have storage vMotioned the guests in question to a data to another store but it moved were the real files associated with the guest of the database that they are really on the new data store I was moved successfully to, while the presence on the remains of the problem data store.

Any idea what I can look at to get out of it?  I'm afraid to remove the data store if there is really something that I don't see.

    Thank you

    David

This happens usually if the CD (or floppy) drive virtual points to an image file on the data store (don't don't even need to be connected) or the virtual machine has one or more active snapshots where one of the snapshots have been created while the virtual machine had a connection to the data store. Depending on the size of your environment, you can click virtual machines or use for example RVTools (http://www.robware.net/) to find the settings.

    Gerry,

Is it possible that your virtual machine contains a cd connected to the data store? I came across that once where a virtual machine was showing that the use of two data warehouses, but there files were only in one. I found that I had connected the reader of cd/dvd via the client to a file that was in this other data store. Just a thought.
