VMWare Workstation on a virtual computer

Hi guys,.

I'm looking to get a new laptop for a company, I'm leaving, and I was thinking about a mac. However, most of my software is based on windows. No problem, I already use VMWare Workstation as half of it is also not supported on anything except XP SP1. My only concern with a mac, is that while I can have all my VM set up, I can not run VMWare Workstation on OSX, so if I need to change something in the settings of the virtual machine, I need access to a PC with VMWare workstation.

Unless, I thought, I use a PC to initially set up a virtual machine running windows XP/7/8 with the sole purpose of running VMWare Workstation. Then I run this virtual machine by using the merger, make my changes, register the virtual machine on the host computer, and then run them using the merger.

So outside all feeling a bit like this guy:

26hg.jpg

Can someone tell me if this is really possible? Or if she would have inherent problems that I have not thought? Having not used merge I don't know how access to the settings of the virtual machine I would be compared to the workstation, perhaps merger would in itself be sufficient. The only things I'll need to play with are virtual serial ports, and network connections. In any case all advice is appreciated!

Thank you!

Hello

From the description above, I think that merging should be pretty good, that said you can always get a trial version of VMware Fusion

Click on the link below to download the demo version:

https://my.VMware.com/group/VMware/info?slug=desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_fusion/6_0

Now make a copy of the virtual machine responds you plan to use and see if VMware Fusion to your questions.

Once you are convinced, then you can buy VMware Fusion and use it,

Hope this helps

  • VMWare Workstation - movement of virtual machines

I created a virtual machine using VMWare Workstation 6.5.1 on an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU PC processor. My intention is to put this VM on a USB hard drive and then use it on the other 2 work stations, which are all two Core 2 Duo CPU.  All 3 hosts are running 64-bit Vista Ultimate. The guest for this virtual machine operating system is also 64-bit Vista Ultimate.

I copied the files on the computer, virtual on a USB drive and then plugged into one of my workstations. I selected the file & gt; Open and open the virtual machine. Everything seemed good, so I turned on the virtual machine. When I did, I got an error screen that says:

"Unable to start Windows. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. »

    "Leadership: \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe.

«Info: attempt to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with the 64-bit mode.»

I mounted my Vista install DVD iso and started for her, but even the installer wouldn't start. The error seems to make no sense as the Core2 Duo is a 64-bit processor and the host is running a 64-bit operating system. The only thing I can think is that the virtual machine was originally created on an Intel Core 2 Quad processor, and that causes a problem when trying to open with a Core 2 Duo.

    Any suggestions?

Check the BIOS of the machine with problems - perhaps VT extensions are not enabled.

If you do a switch do a boot cold - unplug power for 10 seconds the change

  • Problem with VMWare Workstation combo, .vhd virtual drives and physical disks in the sector of size 4K?

    All,

I suspect something wrong with some of my virtual machines.  I have been using these virtual machines for a while, and I see some weird behaviour recently.

I see a lot of corruption in the virtual hard disk (.vhd based).  CHKDSK automatically gets performed many large files such as Oracle datafiles get damaged etc...  It all seems quite random and inconsistent, but I am using .vhd virtual machines in VMWare Workstation for years without problem.  This problem is new, and hard drives are basically unstable.

I * think * (and I'm totally off base) that is perhaps the issue with my new external hard drives.  These discs have a 4 KB sector size, without e512.  Thanks to this architecture of hard drive, don't mount not the tools of Microsoft or manupulate .vhd files on these disks.  The questions seem to go away if I switch to vmdk or switch to the physical hard disk size-one-sector 512kb.  Because errors are not compliant, that I don't really have a way to document/prove that is the case, but it seems to be.

I use version 9.0.0 on Windows 7 Workstation, and the guest is Windows Server 2008R2.

    My question is:

    (1) what meaning?

    (2) how I prove/document, since it is a contradiction?

    (3) is this a known problem?

(Btw, switching HDD's vmdk is not an option in our case due to an obscure legal agreement with Microsoft.  I have to distribute my VMs in vhd format, even if they are designed to run on VMWare...)

    -> Adam

These discs have a 4 KB sector size, without e512.

(I've highlighted "without e512" in "BOLD" to key in my answer to the host operating system.)

    -L'OS is Windows 7 Enterprise

According to the political support for the 4 K sector hard drives in Windows, Windows 7 does not support the native 4 K (logical 4 k sector size) but it does not support Advanced Format or 512th (size of logical sector physical and 512 bytes of 4 K) and that is can be the question.

  • How can I run VMWare Workstation on a virtual host?

I need to run VMWare workstation 7.1 on a 2008 R2 virtual running on ESXi.  The software installs fine, but when I try to start the virtual machines I get the following error 'you are running VMWare Workstation via an incompatible hypervisor. You can not power on a Windows virtual machine until this hypervisor is disabled. »

    Is it still possible?

Due to a design flaw of material in the first AMD - V compatible processors, we do not support AMD - V on your host.  Hardware support for virtualization (AMD - V or VT - x) for the virtual machine outside is needed to get nested VMs to work.

  • Move a machine virtual in Vmware Fusion (Mac) of Vmware Workstation (PC)

I guess that most people worry about how to move a virtual machine from the PC to Mac. I have exactly the opposite need.

Will there be a way to migrate toward the back of the Mac to the PC? VMware Workstation recognizes as virtual machines created with the merger?

I agree with etung provide a list of files.  The virtual machine has been turned off when you have copied the disk NTFS?  Do you have pictures?  I usually don't use snapshots and always make sure that the virtual machine is turned off before changing platforms, but the error message sounds like you can't be in the same State before performing the copy.

  • Problem installing VMWare Workstation on a Server Windows 2012

    Hello

I have problems when trying to install VMWare Workstation on a Server Windows 2012. Windows Server is Amazon EC2 environment and a generic image extended release.

The problem is that the installtion process fails because of "Hyper-V" during installation, but after investigating the option "Remove roles and features" I can see that it is not installed.

Is there any fixes for this issue?

I enclose three screenshots for you pleasure.

    Regards, Ray...

    Hello Ray,

Welcome to the VMware community forums.

You run an EC2 instance that has just 615 MB memory installed?

It's kind of a weird for a host, much too low for Amazon memory configuration, even be profitable.

I think that your server is running UNDER Hyper-V, for example. It is probably a Virtual Machine.

You can easily check that yourself by running the script from this site:

How Hyper-V to: detect if you are inside a virtual machine

If it's a Hyper-V virtual computer then I don't think you can install VMware Workstation on the virtual machine and run the nested clients.

You could do the opposite (invited running hyper-V in a workstation virtualized on vSphere) but is not very fast.

As you have no control over which platform virtualization Amazon use for their windows servers, I'm afraid you will have to go for a dedicated server instead of a virtual machine.

    Hope this helps,

  • P2V in VMware workstation 10

I am on Windows 8 and have installed VMware workstation 10 and have several virtual machines.

I need low grade of the PC to windows 7 and thought I could make a VM to install windows 8, so I still have a copy (a virtual machine) my data and existing installed programs.

But thought I might have a problem doing a P2V on PC Windows 8 which is also where VMware Workstation is installed. VMware workstation in the virtual P2V machine would be uninstall because it does not need the virtual machine.

Is it possible to do a P2V to the PC running VMware workstation?

I install VMware Vcenter Converter Standalone or I have a backup, Acronis that I could use.

    What are my options.

    Thanks Rainey

Is it possible to do a P2V to the PC running VMware workstation?

Yes, it's possible... you will need to install VMware vCenter Converter Standalone.

  • How can I change default location VM VMware Workstation via Group Policy or to a Script?

    Hello

I administer a laboratory of my school networking in a Windows Server 2008 R2 environment. We want to enable folder redirection but since VMware Workstation creates new virtual machines by default in the C:\Users\Username\Documents\Virtual Machines, I can't do this, or else the NAS would be overloaded.

My question is, is there a file registry or config that I could change via a script or a political group? In this way, all students would default their VM install to another location.

    Thanks for your time.

The default location is %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Virtual Machines and is not set in the registry of Windows or the disk file until the default is changed and is then defined in the file %APPDATA%\VMware\preferences.ini as: prefvmx.defaultVMPath = "FQP.

  • How to move the Virtual Machine VMWare Workstation 10 to a completely different computer

I have a laptop that is going to become my 'old' laptop, I bought and am always set up a new computer.

I have a VM THAT evolution created on the 'old' portable using VMWare Workstation 10.  I installed the software VMWare Workstation 10 on the new laptop computer and am ready to move to the existing VM development since the old laptop again to continue the development of software on the virtual machine to the new machine.

I never moved a computer virtual from one computer to another, and I guess that all I have to do is to copy and move the folder and all its content from the old laptop to the new, and then I'll be back in business?

Just make sure it is this simple before doing so.

    Thanks for any input.

It's as simple as that. When you start in the new machine, it should ask if you copied or moved. Answer that you moved it will keep the same MAC address and you will not be able to connect the two copies at the same time. You copied it saying assigns a new MAC and they both can connect, but a Windows machine can ask to reactivate. Seems to me he asked also to reactivate when I copied it for an Intel system AMD system, but it was a long time ago

  • Can you teach VMware WorkStation to attach NOT some devices to a virtual computer?

What I find more tedious with VMware workstation (I use v9) is, it still attaches automatically * all * USB devices being plugged in while that VM Workstation automatically runs in a virtual computer.

On my laptop work/computer workstation I frequently have a VM open for long periods while developing and testing programs. In the meantime, devices all USB (USB, security tokens, my cell phone keys, etc.) I plug are automatically attached to the VM without asking. However, I want to be attached to the host, which is the main system. Only when they show up there for more than half a minute or so after plugging the, I usually realize that they * new * have been connected to the virtual machine, then I neeed to detach and their connection to the host instead manually.

I find it ANNOYING! Can't you teach WorkStation to memorize these settings and automatically connect devices, which were previously attached to some VM or at least ask me?

    M.

This may not indicate all the scenarios, but it of a place to start, have a look on: disable the AutoConnect USB devices

  • Running the VCS 4 and ESX 4 and computer virtual on a PC using VMWare Workstation 7.01

    Hello

I could not install on my PC Windows 7.01 vCenter. I was getting a "28035.Setup error". I was told that you can run vcs on a virtual machine, so I decided to create a machine virtual W2K3 just for my VCS. I have 1 VM ESX 4.0 and 1 VCS 4.0 VM on my PC. I'm using VMWare Workstation 7 to join my VM and vSphere Client on the desktop. How can I run VCS? Normally, it will show on vShere customer. Do I need to reinstall from the CD of vCenter? Any ideas? Thank you.

When I try to add my vcs on the domain controller server

I don't understand exactly what you are trying to add?

Basically, what you need to run a test environment is:

-a domain with DNS controller and - if you want - DHCP

-Member Server windows on which you are installing vCenter Server

-one or more host ESX (i)

On your client, you must install the vSphere Client and connect to the server vCenter Server by using your credentials of the AD. Using the vSphere Client, you can add hosts ESX(I) and your installation configuration.

  • VMware Workstation 12 Pro Maximum number of standard error of virtual Macines

    error.png

I get this error when I open many clones of virtual machine to WIn 2K12R2. now, I opened a new instance of workstation for

run a new VM clones. I don't have this problem in the Workstation 11.0.2

There is a limitation in Windows that will sometimes hit when an instance of VMware Workstation tries to manage a lot of virtual machines simultaneously.  If the workstation user interface knock this architectural limit (which can happen to about 28 VMs), the user interface will break.

Earlier versions of workstation had a check in place to prevent that from happening, but that the cheque has been omitted by mistake of recent versions, you to eventually open a little more VMs, but risk of accident.  12 workstation restores the audit.  In a future version of Workstation I hope will eventually be restructured to avoid the underlying limitation altogether, but we are not yet there.

This particular limitation is not related to the total number of virtual machines that are running on the computer host, so (as the message says) you should be able to simply open a second instance of VMware Workstation and run several virtual machines in this second case.  If I remember correctly, I think that we have a strict limit of 64 virtual machines running simultaneously on Windows hosts.

    I hope this helps!

  • Failed to create virtual machine using VMWare Workstation 11 (test)

    Hello people,

I installed VMWare Workstation on my machine Windows 10 and trying to create multiple virtual machines to test the object. I have done this before on the Windows 7 computer and did not face any problems, but this time, as soon as I gave the location of the file to deploy an operating system it comes up with some fatal errors as error BLK_CACHE IOERR if I have enough space on the HARD drive and everything is not going further. So, my question is if my computer has compatible with Windows 10 problems or there is something else that would cause this problem. Any help or comments would be appreciated on this topic.

    Thank you!.

    Thanks for your answer, Noel

I was going through discussions in the community with similar and found subjects that VMWare had released 12 pro workstation that supports Windows 10 entirely. I personally installed it on my physical machine and it works. Here is the link for the release of Workstation 12 notes.
