WEP versus WPA2Personal

I set up my wireless router Linksys and used the WEP option.  Is there a difference between that and WPA2personal. When I look at my security settings on my TIVO it shows security: WEP Configuration open.  It does not require typing in 26 hexadecimal characters.  I want to just make sure I have everything secure.  Any help for this newbie would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

WEP is very precarious. It takes about 5 minutes to crack a WEP encrypted network.

Personal WPA2 with AES encryption is the best available at this time. Use WPA2-Personal with AES and a strong password to protect your wireless network.

Sorry, but there is no WEP settings AirPort Utility on the iPhone or iPad, or any Mac version of AirPort Utility which was used for the last 4 years or so.

If you have an older Mac still running AirPort 5.x utility or a PC with the AirPort for Windows utility installed on the device, the WEP settings that could be used to get the Express to connect to a WEP network there.

As you know, WEP has not been secured for a number of years, and there are any number of free utilities available on the Internet, which is crack a WEP network in a few seconds. Thus, all those who want to be on your network will not have problems to do very quickly.

  • Why do I get an incorrect WEP key during the installation of my printer?

    http://support.HP.com/us-en/document/c00772798

    I worked for HP.

This work also (well) with the J6480 printer.  I was using a Linksys router Wireless 'G' which creates 4 WEP keys, allowing you to choose which use.  I sent #2 key and it would not accept.  The only way I could make it work was to disable wireless security, is not my idea of a good option.  After numerious emails and 1 appeal to support with no ideas that I decided to seek out here and finally managed to do accept the WEP key.  I ended up completely uninstall/reinstall to get everything to work 100%, but now it works like a charm.  For those of you with a similar problem, when using a router that generates more than 1 WEP key, try using (sending) key #1

My 9 immediately connected iOS devices.   Although older OSX (Lion? ML?, I don't know with certainty at this time) does not work.

They see the net in the most convenient airport and can fill in the PW and the 'antennas' in the menu shows good connection, although Mail and Safari (only available applications) report: no connection to the Internet.

This will not change anything, except less secure your network.  The encryption method does not affect the rest of the internet connections, and you indicate that you are connected to WiFi.

Cable connection to the router is working OK

Can't think of anything else to do.
    Advice please.

    Hello

It is certainly a problem of encryption
You should check the configuration of your router again

That means tat that you should try to change the type of encryption; try using WPA instead of WEP.
This should be replaced on the router and WLan configuration settings
Check if you can configure using the Atheros WLan WLan configuration tool
But if you would do this, please don t forget to turn off internal Windows zero config.

  • Unable to connect by Satellite 1410 604 to WLAN when enabled WEP in

    Hello!

Well, all I was looking for this forum, but I was not able to find what is happening with this computer.

    News of the laptop:

    Toshiba Satellite
    Model: 1410-604
    Installed wireless network adapter:
Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card
    Texas Instruments PCI-1410 CardBus Controladora

From what I could find so far (the laptop is not mine, I'm helping a friend to get solved this problem) this card supports the standard 802.11/b. This should not be a problem, because the A / P supports 802. 11b standard.

Anyway, there is absolutely no way to get the laptop connected to the WLAN...

Or, to be more correct: it does not connect to the WLAN when WEP encryption is enabled (WEP or WPA give the same thing: it seems to get connected, but never address IP of DHCP), but this drug is going very well, if I turn off the WEP encryption.

The worst is that the installed drivers don't support almost any configuration. Advanced configuration supports the following:

    1. the station name
    2 channel
    3 speed transmission
    4. power management card

In addition, the card doesn't have any network manager (as others have, where it is possible to adjust some settings and ensure that WEP is used properly).

I don't know what is happening here. I wasn't able to get the card working in Windows XP and or in LINUX (knoppix, ubuntu and xubuntu I tried).

I'm starting to think that this has to do with the card and it is the inability to work under encriptación WEP or WAP (it works OK in open WLANs), and I do not see how to solve this problem.

It seems that there are no newer drivers than what I (downloaded at Toshiba),
I don't know if an update of the BIOS, will probably not solve.

The card is maybe just too old... but if I'm not wrong... It should work. Shouldn't it?

All ideas are absolutely our guests!

    Best regards

    Fenix_D

    Hello

It seems that this map was made by Agere (it comes to WLan driver appearing on the Toshiba page).
The INF file provides a few details and the driver appear to come from v7.42.0.300 19/12/2001

However, the encryption WEP or WAP is features material and if the equipment (WLan card) does not support this then an update of the driver would not help you!

But what you might check is the option in the Device Manager-> card Wlan-> properties-> Advanced tab
Usually, there is all necessary settings and if the encryption would be supported then you should find it there.

If this doesn't help then I advise you to buy a USB WLan stick who favour more recent ciphers

  • Satellite P20: WEP key does not fit - only 24 characters

Salvation; on my satellite p20 there is not enough space to enter a wep key of 26 characters (only 24 places) can someone advise how to configure to accept the 26 characters
    Rgds david

    Hi David

When you enter your password, only 24 points will be displayed. Please enter the set password and save. When you open it again the number of points will be different again. It is a kind of security features and do not show the actual password length.

I can't follow the statement as I see as I installed ConfigFree.
Did he encountered this problem and solved it?

    Hello

What card WLan is preinstalled on your device?
As far as I know that some Qosmio G20 units use an Atheros WLan card.
In this case the Atheros WLan client utility should be preinstalled on this laptop. This program disables the Windows configuration.

When I use WEP, I can't do any connection more.

What card WLan do you use?

As far as I know the laptop must be equipped with LAN Wireless / WiFi Standard: 802. 11B ORiNOCO Mini PCI card.
This card supports WEP 64 or 128 RC4 security.

Everything looks like you WLan card doesn't support the same standards of security as your WLan router. You must understand that this WLan card is an oldie about 7 years.

I think that the best solution is to use external USB WLAN which support the latest encryption standards

  • Enabling WEP on Satellite A100

You just bought an A100. Hoping to run wireless. Guide suggests that validates the WEP function but does not say how and I don't see it in any application?... or would that part of installing broadband?

    Hello

WEP encryption can be enabled in the wireless properties. Please open network connections in Control Panel and open the wireless network connection properties.

After that go to the tab wireless networks. It should be shown your WLAN and if you go to the properties of your WLAN you can find the data encryption option. Here you can set the WEP option.

  • WEP encryption key do not forget when you restart the Equium M50-244

I use a laptop Equium M50-244, with a BT Home Hub 7838 wireless router. Almost everytime I turn on the laptop it has no wireless connection. So I have to go to control panel, network connections and that he can find a new connection.

I would then type the key to encryption WEP number twice to get a new connection.
This is obviously a long procedure, so I need to get the laptop to recognize the encryption key and save it for the next time I turn on.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 and a Norton Anti Virus and Firewall.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Hello

I agree with Louis. Your WLAN cards support WPA encryption and, if possible, you should use it.

Anyway: try to Setup WLAN to use Windows settings and set WEP password we remind for your WLAN. I have the set up on a lot of laptops different and after choosing the publicly traded WLAN password has already been set and the only thing that must be done is to click on the Connect button.
