Win 7 or 8 with a new W530?
Hidy ho.
I realize that no one can make that decision for me, but I would greatly appreciate feedback from users than me.
I've been running Win XP on an old Dell these past seven years, and it's time for a new laptop. Am on the Lenovo site now, customize a W530 before buying.
Win 7 or Win 8? That is the question. Lenovo offers Win 7 free of charge, and I have read and heard that the OS is stable and mature.
Or should I take the plunge of Nestea and go with Win 8? Outside the intuitive learning curve, are there other reasons for delaying the inevitable?
I should add that I'm not big on upgrading the operating system during the life of the machine. Everything that comes with this laptop, it's what I'll probably use for the next six or seven years.
Thank you very much for your thoughts!
Brooks
Windows 7 will be an easier transition, so I recommend that. At the time where you should update the W530, Microsoft will have its model OS subscription full swing and at least most of the questions that people currently have with Windows 8 will have been worked.

Reinstalled Win Vista with the recovery CD that I got with my HP Pavilion, now get quick activate Windows with a new product key. MS sticker on the tower is one that says 'Vista', no product key. When I go to activate Windows, I offer the choice to buy another copy of Windows or enter a new product key. A run the Genuine Advantage tool and he says it's "authentic." HP will not help, they say I have to buy another copy of Windows from MS, but I already paid for it when I bought the machine. What can I do?

Talk about confusion. Does anyone know how to get a Toshiba C660 work after the HARD drive failed and the owner has stupidly NOT followed the instructions to make a recovery disk. Will be the recovery disk (if buy you one from Toshiba) rebuild the new HARD disk with a new recovery partition and install windows 7 (original OS) and accept the product key printed on the Windows license, attached to the base of the laptop. I have read a number of suggestions, but these have been considered incorrect by others.
Surely, Toshiba must have a way to sort this problem.
They read these messages?
Hey Buddy
I don't think it's really complicated, that I could find all the information about the recovery procedure in the user's manual
The recovery disk must be created on the first day of purchase its recommended to create one in case something would be wrong with the HARD drive.
The recovery disk contains an image. The image is a package containing Win system, drivers, tools and all the stuff pre-installed on the notebook.
You bought the laptop and the system has already been activated so that you have need of t the key placed at the bottom of the unit.
In addition, the use of the recovery disc formats the drive HARD integer (partitions too) and set the laptop in the same condition as at the first day of the purchase. There is also another option to recover the notebook called HARD drive recovery. This HARD drive recovery requires no recovery disk. The recovery disc HARD would be to use format ONLY partition C (System).

HP Envy 5530 said to replace the color cartridge, even after replacing with a new one. Printer is 1 year old and I replaced the cartridges several times over the past year. I am enrolled in the program of HP ink. I can run the printer mode single cartridge using a black ink only and it works with my pc XP, Ipad, Chrome pc and mobile phone. My pc win 8.1 will not print anything other than a test page. Printer on the pc file lists always attention required when you try to print from the pc win 8.1. I believe that the problem may be related to surface of cartridge for printing inside the HP envy heads 5530. This part is available for purchase, and if so, where?
I found a work around. On the pc win 8.1, it seems that the print request must see a reset of the HP envy 5530 to print mode single cartridge. I just start the pc and then reset the printer by lifting the hatch for the print heads. That's all. Once this is done, the 'attention required' message goes to the loan and it is able to print. It will open a window, which suggests you add the color cartridge, but it will disappear when printing. Simply open the door once and you can print until you turn off the pc.

I'm a software developer, and I receive a new maxed-out W530, my first Thinkpad ever (HP and Apple so far).
My usual practice with a new PC is to repave with
- a clean installation of the operating system: Windows Enterprise 8.1 in this case, probably
- sufficient pilots that nothing is hit in the Device Manager
- different versions of Visual Studio and SDK and Office 2010 or 2013
- (only if absolutely necessary) packages of software needed to support material
Is there any tarpits I met if I do this?
Thank you
Richard
It depends on.
You're going to be using UEFI? (il apporte beaucoup de complication dans la phase d'installation), also, there seems to be problems with BitLocker, at least in windows 7)
Are you dual boot? (if you will be dual-boot to windows 7 and below, you must specify CSM properties (bios) startup for windows 8 Yes, you can leave it in the UEFI only)
Ideally, you will prepare your customized Windows image (I do not know if these tools have been released to adjust images for windows 8).
In windows 7, you can put an xml in a usb key and configure programs and users in different partitions (shouln t you 'Users' in 'C') (still once, if you use UEFI and dual boot, you will need to the forward bulkhead of the hand with the first program Windows partition (good size for C is 80 GB) (without installation) resize and create partitions for Linux/Windows using G-parted cd.)
-You must have the copy of the file swtools to your thinkpad and directly download the video drivers from nvidia.
-Updated the BIOS of your laptop in advance first, using the windows utility.
-If you use SSDS, you must upgrade the firmware of the SSDS before anything!
-If you use the mSATA ssd, you must update the firmware/SW using a Lenovo tool (page pilot) (and you shouldn't put your system disk or boot)

Hello
I tried to install the software HP Computrace (International) SP64143 c. 8.3.0.5 (November 12, 2013) on my G1 of 850 EliteBook after upgrade to Win 8.1 Pro, but I get the following error:
"The security application can be installed up to what the HP Client Security Manager 8.1 is installed"
Please note that I do not installed the Hp Client Security Package Manager and some other similar programs appear to be installed.
What is this supposed to do? Give access to the function of Lojack (the new name Computrace)? I also wonder if it would be a relevant problem to activate the service of Absolute Software Lojack.
Help, please... Thank you
Caramel thanks for pointing me in the right direction to achieve the final solution!
After a few experiences, it's my final conclusion: HP distributes two different service packs that have the same:
- name SP64339.exe
- version (8.3.1.1714 (November 20, 2013) and)
- Description on the web page (HP Client Manager Security)
but * ILS DO NOT HAVE THE SAME CONTENT AND APPLICATIONS *. If access you the link you gave me:
#1: a system Win Pro 8, the HP Server allow you to download a file that has:
- Description of the file: HP Client Manager improved offer a Windows login Security...
- File version: 4.0.100.1189
- Size 148 MB
- This corresponds to the full-fledged HP customer Security Manager (CSM) implemented by Digital Persona Inc..
#2: a Win 8.1 Pro system, the HP Server allow you to download a file that has:
- No Description of file
- File version: 4.0.100.1189
- Size 90.6 MB
- This corresponds to the HP SimplePass application created by Softex Inc., a very basic site password Program Manager.
Just after installation on the OS Win 8 Pro the CSM HP put implemented by Digital Persona Inc., I was also able to install the Computrace patch (SP64143.exe) smoothly. It is a distinct and different from the SP64339 SP and it allows to Absolute Software access to the features of the Intel anti-theft technology.
Please note that this give HP CSM access you the function of connection of fingerprints and others.
The problem that I saw earlier, it is that in Win 8.1 Pro is due to the fact that the SimplePass application does not support the Computrace agent. so I tried to install on my Elitebook with Win 8.1 Pro the SP64339 even system 850 downloaded previously using a HD different mounting an OS Win 8 Pro and... here, everything seems to install and works great even on Win 8.1 Pro.
The main question are:
1. why HP did end with the distribution of their security HP Client Manager?
2 what problems is I meet on Win 8.1 Pro with the Security HP Client Manager designed for Windows 8 Pro?
I suppose I could run into some problem if I change the pwd of my login, even if outllok.com... Web site it would generate a disallignment on the connection of access controlled, managed by the CSM from HP on my PC...
Thanks a lot again for your GREAT help!

With my new Canon's MG7120 software installation problem
I recently updated my homeoffice with a new Dell XPS running Windows 8.1.
Bought a new Canon Pixma MG7120 to replace my old Epson printer.
I tried to install the printer software from the disc that came with the printer.
Ive been trying to connect wirelessly and my wireless router connects with my printer.
My problem is when I run the disc. When I get to the part of the installation, nothing happens. All I get is a window telling me that "my firewall may try to block the installation of Canon and I should respond accordingly as" Yes, accept,... and no matter what the choice, I give myself to allow Cannon installation.:
There is a button 'Next' at the bottom right corner and it will highlight when I place my cursur on that. I clicked and nothing happens. The installation should take between 5-10 minutes.
Appreciate any comment or idea about it.
Thank you
CSantos
I'm so disappointed. I bought a brand new Pixma MG7120 for my grass hobby photograhy. Finally, my old Epson Stylus photo passed his end of life phase where it is no longer supported.
I have a new PC with os Windows 8.1.
I was so excited, winning this new printer. I followed the instructions to the letter and bam, phase of the Installation stalls. The screen is just sitting there doing nothing. I tried again to recharge etc... with the same results.
I'm not a computer programmer and am really frustrated and angry that I have to go through this bs... and still not get the printer running.
I went in the Drivers Canon section and set to date. Still nothing. I tried downloading online and still nothing. Always the same stall during the installation phase. Just can't get past that.
What is going on? I spent $250.00 on printers and ink and even impossible to print a letter.
I have tried wireless and usb and a big '' NOTHING. ''
I ask the support over the weekend and if I'm still able to print, I'LL RETURN the UNIT AND FIND ANOTHER BRAND THAT WORKS.

HP CQ60-4098SA: problem starting with the new SSD on CQ60-409SA
I just replaced my HARD drive with a new 120 GB SSD 11 Extreme Sandisk.
Everything went well without any problem install Win 7 Ultimate and a lot more quick search time, etc...
The problem that I have, is that when I start the laptop from the cold, IE turn it on to use, the SSD is not recognized and I just get a black screen with the top left corner flashing cursor, but if I press on Ctrl-Alt-Del, the system restarts and boots then in windows without problem.
I'm trying to know if I can access Advanced BIOS Options, if I press F10 when booting I get only Options like to change boot order and not more advanced to change the training settings, etc. and F2 does not Diagnostics for the SDS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated I'm very satisfied with the performance increase that disk SSD gives Windows and start itme except for having to start twice.
Best regards
Hi Erico,
The SSD was visible on the Windows installation disc, but after I installed the AHCI drivers during the option to load drivers installation succeeded and starts as it should.
Kind regards

BSOD when trying to install Win7 64 bit with the new motherboard
Hi all
I have the following BSOD problem:
I installed a new motherboard in my system (a MSI P43 C51). Before that, I got a Gigabyte G41MT-S2P. The rest of the configuration is: Q9650, Thermaltake truespirit 90 cooler, 2 x 4 GB DDR3 1333, GTX 470, 750W PSU, case name, SATA HDD 500 GB, Windows 7 64 bit.Well, the problem started when I tried to boot into windows with the new motherboard: I got BSOD 1 second after windows starts loading. I thought... new motherboard, install new windows, so I tried to install windows 7 64 bit DVD and USB stick, I get the STOP: 0x0000000A error during installation. I changed the HARD drive, thinking that it could be a bad sector problem, but no, the other hard drive behaved exactly the same thing. I got BSOD at 40% extraction, extraction of 90% and for the moment "Complete the installation..." ». I also tried to install with the stick of memory only one, spent between ports, everything. The material I have works, as I played on my PC every day in the last month and received no. BSOD, also had a small overclock the CPU and the GPU (100 MHz on the processor, that the old motherboard supported more than 343 fsb and about 100 MHz on the GPU). It was stable, no errors, no nothing.
My thoughts are only, after asking some knowledge that work in computer support, it could be a problem of version of the BIOS (BIOS is 2005..) and the fact that my Win 7 installation kit is without Service Pack 1 (a colleague told me that he had this problem for the PC more than once and after trying to install SP1 It went smoothly and without errors)
I just got a new "blank" DVD of Win 7 64 bit with SP1. What I'll try today is to Flash the bios with the latest version and install the OS on a HARD drive new, sealed. He could not be my system components, because they are compatible and they worked 1 day before with no problems! I have literally NO IDEA what could be the problem. Today, I'll try the installation of the new DVD and with the new version of the BIOS. If this does not work, I have no idea what I can do... It is a sucky situation.
If you have any suggestions, please, don't keep it to yourself :-D
Thank you!

BCCode: 0a 0x0000000A
Cause
This bug check is issued if the memory paged (or invalid) is accessible when the IRQL is too high.
The error that usually generates this bug check occurs after the installation of the faulty device driver or service system, BIOS.
If you encounter a bug 0xA control during the upgrade to a later version of Windows, this error can be caused by a device driver, system service, an anti-virus or a backup tool that is not compatible with the new version.
Solve the problem
If a kernel debugger is available, get a stack trace.
To resolve an error caused by the faulty device driver or service system, BIOS
- Restart your computer.
- Press F8 to character-based menu that displays the choice of operating system.
- In the WindowsAdvanced Options menu, select last known good Configuration . This option is most effective when a pilot or a service is added at a time.
To resolve an error caused by an incompatible device driver, system service, virus scanner, or backup tool
- Check the system log in Event Viewer for error messages that may identify the device or driver that caused the error.
- Try disabling the cache in memory of the BIOS.
- Run the diagnostics of equipment provided by the manufacturer of the system, in particular the scanner memory. For more information about these procedures, see the manual of your computer.
- Make sure that the latest Service Pack is installed.
- If your system has cards (SCSI) small computer system interface, contact the card manufacturer for updated Windows drivers. Try to disable sync negotiation in the SCSI BIOS, check the wiring and the SCSI ID of each device and confirming the proper termination.
- For devices (IDE) peripheral electronic integrated, set the built-in as only primary IDE port. Also, check each IDE device to the right setting master/slave/stand alone. Try to remove all IDE devices except for the hard drives.
If the message appears during installation of Windows, make sure that the computer and installed devices are listed in the list of the products tested Microsoft Windows market.
Comments
Before upgrading to a new version of Windows, remove all third-party device drivers and system services and disable any antivirus. Contact software manufacturers for updates of these third-party tools.
