Yes. In addition to an anti-virus program, you must also at least one
anti-spyware (two or three is even better) program. Windows Defender is
    an anti-spyware program.

    But keep in mind:

I think McAfee is one of the two worst anti-virus programs on the
market (Norton is this one). I recommend that you run eSET NOD32
If you are willing to pay for anti-virus software, or one of the
the following three if you want for free anti-virus software:

    Avira
    Avast
    Microsoft Security Essentials

For anti-spyware, I recommend running all three of the following:

    MalwareBytes AntiMalware
    SuperAntiSpyware
    Windows Defender.

  • Unable to access computer because the account password for Windows Vista has been forgotten and don't have a password reset disk/hard to find ways to restore the system... Help please

    Hello
I'm stuck on the screen on my computer for my Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition. The password to the user account has been lost, and now I am unable to access my computer. I don't have a created password reset disk so I can't reset the password. I searched these forums and seems the most effective way is to run a system restore to a time where I did have a password for my account. Fortunately for me, I did an automatic update of Windows that created a system restore point literally moments before I put the password, so I should be able to get access to my computer once I figured out how to get system restore to work. The advice I found on other forums do not seem to work, because I'm in my Windows vista operating system disc, but no screen is coming up with 'Repair your computer', which indicate the steps happen. I need assistance to find another way to run the system restore on boot menus/Vista/DVD CD. Thank you.

Go to Bestbuy or other PC shop. They can fix it for you. (Could I have so I am not allowed to post these alternative instructions.)

When I go into the Panel and then programs and features, Windows Media Player is not in the list. If I click on the Start button, then all programs, his list here. Must indicate all items that are installed on my computer, at least I thought. If someone has an idea, I would appreciate a response. Thank you for your time and your help.

All the built-in programs that are part of the Vista operating system will NOT be displayed in programs and features. To simplify the reason, Windows Media Player 11 is part of the operating system and cannot be uninstalled. So there is not need to be listed in programs and features, whose main goal is to uninstall or repair any installed programs. Another example is Windows Defender.

    For your information:

In Windows 7, Windows Media Player 12 is also part of the operating system and it cannot be uninstalled and it will not reveal in programs and features either.

  • Hi, not really a new Member, but I'm having difficulty with the system recovery.

I have an Acer Aspire 7741Z, I know he's older. It has windows 7 Home premium on it. I guess the hard drive went bad because I replaced it and it seemed to work. I put the system recovery discs that I bought at Acer last week and it rises to display disk copy files and looks like it loads the images file. But then it stops and gives me an error message that says "do not copy the file to the HARD drive. File G:\Images\WOP000400OENSC121103. STORMWATER MANAGEMENT.  I'm not worried about record data at this stage, just try to get the computer to work.  I don't know if I was sent a 'bad' disc or what.  Any suggestion would be great.

    Alexa

Good for you! I suppose that insufficient disk space might also explain why the installation stopped at the same place.

Try typing F2 when you first see the Acer bios screen to get back into the bios menu. Make sure your new hard drive is first in the boot order. F10 to exit and save the settings.

    Windows Vista

    Using the F8 method:

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. When the computer starts, you will see your computer hardware are listed. When you see this information begins to tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Boot Options Advanced Windows Vista.
    3. Select the Safe Mode with networking with the arrow keys.
    4. Then press enter on your keyboard to start mode without failure of Vista.
    5. To start Windows, you'll be a typical logon screen. Connect to your computer and Vista goes into safe mode.
    6. Do whatever tasks you need and when you are done, reboot to return to normal mode.

Once in Safe Mode with network, download and run RKill.

RKill does NOT remove the malware; It stops the Malware process that gives you a chance to remove it with your security programs.

  • Vista SP2 enterprise. Updates to Windows from 11 August caused the system hang after starting.

Œuvres of mouse pointer, but the catch systems when I click on any element of the bar of tasks or office. OK works in safe mode. System Restore to a date before the updates does not help. I've eliminated all unnecessary programs in menu start, including NVIDIA drivers, but the problem persists.  Any suggestions?  Thank you!

    Hi Mathew and Imran;

Thank you.  After several reboots, add and remove services, I believe a solution to the problem.   It seems that McAfee Total Protection disliked among updates August 11... or the update did not like 'total Protection '.

After much frustration, I removed any trace of McAfee, first using windows uninstaller, then running the downloaded program to uninstall McAfee. I then installed Microsoft Security Essentials and downloaded and re-installed McAfee Site Advisor.

I don't think I have the same level of protection as I had before, but the system is faster and I think that I have an adequate level of security.  I'll leave it as it is for now.

I don't want this post as a blow against McAfee, they are an industry leader in computer security and 'Total Protection' provided exactly that.  We have a second PC in our House... material of identical office however, but under Vista Home Premium, whereas this one is running Vista Business.  Home Premium system runs 'Total Protection' and has not experienced the same problem, as the system of the company.  What's up mind dat?  It runs more slowly, probably because of McAfee files analysis procedures.

If Security Essentials works well in the coming months on this system, I can install it on the other system, as well as on my laptop.  In more than 10 years (from Windows 98 to Vista), we always used McAfee products and have NEVER had a viral infection.  Is it because of MCafee or our own due diligence?  Assume that this is not serious.

Thanks again for your help.  You got me on the right track!  Best regards... TeeDubTW

  • I need to run an old program from back 16 bits on 64-bit Windows 7.

I asked that the supplier and the 32-bit and 64-bit software versions are not available. How can I run the software I have?

Try the Windows XP Mode to run your 16-bit application:

All editions of Windows 7 Professional, full and business supports XP mode which can (not a 100% certainty) start your older Windows XP compatible software. For more information, read the info below, pay attention to the requirements.

Run in Windows XP Mode requires:
Windows 7 - Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise (not supported in the Home Premium edition - upgrade Express below see).

    XP Mode System Configuration required
    Supported operating systems:
Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise.
Note: If you have Windows 7 Home Premium, look at the "Anytime Upgrade" options

My XPS 400 system crashed with an error hal.ddl.  Was able to copy my important data on a disk external usb.  Tried to re - install windows XP on the old disk and windows does not recognize the hard drives.  I have two drives a Maxtor 250 GB and a 160 GB Maxtor.  I am able to run the utilities on disks and they spend.  After many trys, I thought since I was my important data on the external usb drive, I would go buy a new HD and start all over again.  I bought a WD 500 GB drive and you guessed it, windows xp couldn't recognize the disc. I use Windows XP service pack 2.  I read that Dell had the F11 recovery tool and I ran with success.  However as I started to load some of my programs on the disk, it seemed super slow and I don't know that I have confidence in it.  What should I do to get Windows XP to recognize my drives on the installer?  FRUSTRATING!
