Windows Setup cannot reset the deployment engine. To install windows, restart the installation.

Background: I bought a new 1.5 TB Seagate Baracuda disk to replace my current 500 GB drive.

Symptoms: I removed the old drive and installed the new drive.  I try to install Vista 32.  I have spend entering setup, past the disk partitioning key, then get up at installation windows... never goes beyond 0% and this error pops up.  It's a never-ending cycle.

Information on PC:
HP Pavilion Media Center
Model: M8100n
RAM: 3 GB
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 2.8 GHz
Chipset: GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
Motherboard: ECS MCP61PM-HM (HP/Compaq name: Nettle2-GL8E)

What I've done so far:
Update the BIOS & chipset drivers.
Using the same drive, I can install windows XP without problems.
Using the same player can I clone my existing to the new player (while it really works, I want a clean install and not a copy of the disc I have with it is that existing space)
Once I have clone the new drive I can do a fresh install of Vista from above (even once is not ideal and just wasting disk space)

The problem is that I can't delete all existing partitions, format my new drive and install Vista 32.

Problem is solved.  I don't have a chance to check the compatibility of the reader, but I found a solution that worked.  It turns out that the problem seems to have been a problem of formatting the drive via the Vista CD.  It's very frustrating when you get an error which is not defined anywhere, especially, a mistake by Microsoft that they document on their support pages.

Anyway, I would not normally copy / paste an answer, but it's the solution that worked for me that I found on another forum (thanks Mak)

Download GParted.

http://sourceforge.NET/project/mirror_picker.php?height=350&width=300&group_id=115843&use_mirror=superb-East&filename=gparted-LiveCD-0.3.3-0.ISO

Download and burn the ISO with ImgBurn:

http://NeoSmart.NET/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+images+with+ImgBurn

From there load GParted with the CD in your taskbar. It is a bootable CD. From there, select the partition that you want to install to. right click on the partition and you will see the format option. Choose the NTFS option and format the drive. Then restart with the Vista DVD in the status bar.

Go through the startup process. It should work now.

The problem you are experiencing is related to the format. Vista does not have a formatting full it made just a short where it erases the data. The problem is that you have a damaged area on the hard drive that is causing this problem.

This will get rid of spot and allow installation to complete.

    Okie dokie.

Well I dug on the web and found someone with the same problem, and they said that when they have disabled "McAfee VirusScan 8.5 Access Protection", this error has disappeared. If this applies to you, give it a whirl if you wish.

But the best support that I found came from this website: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838687. The jist of it is (trying to fix it yourself):
Fix it myself to fix this problem yourself, follow these steps:

    1. Log the computer by using an administrator user account.
    2. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.
    3. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    4. Click the view tab.
    5. Under hidden files and folders, click Show hidden folders and files.
    6. Clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.
    7. Open the following folder: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\
    8. If you are running Office 2003, right-click Opa11.dat, and then click Properties. If you are running Office XP, right-click Data.dat, and then click Properties.
    9. Click the Security tab.
    10. Click Advanced.
    11. Click the permissions tab.
    12. Click to select everyone in the list entered permissions and then click change.
    13. Click to select the full control check box.
    14. Click OK three times. If these steps do not resolve this issue, delete the Opa11.dat file or the Data.dat file in the following folder and then restart an Office 2003 program or an Office XP program:
      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data

      If this does not work for you, I would take my installation CD< completely="" uninstall="" microsoft="" excel="" (or="" any="" other="" problems="" that="" are="" giving="" you="" this="" error),="" then="" install="" microsoft's="" windows="" installer="" cleanup="" utility="" (which="" completely="" removes="" all="" stuff="" pertaining="" to="" whichever="" program="" you="" delete,="" for="" you,="" excel)="" and="" then="" reinstall="" microsoft="" excel.="" this="" utility="" program="" is="" really="" powerful,="" and="" you="" can="" download="" your="" copy="" from="">http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.

So, here are three options for you to try. I hope one works for you - let me know it to be.

  • Windows cannot complete the installation in Mode without failure. To continue installing Windows, restart the computer.

HP Desktop, Windows 8.0.  Do a restore of Windows 8 on the hard drive.  Everything is progressing very well until I get this dialog box message: "Windows cannot complete the installation in Mode without failure.  To continue installing Windows, restart the computer. "When I restart the computer the same message appears in a new dialog box.  Before the restoration of Windows, I tried to reset mode without fail to start to get the operating system will once again but failed to get the operating system to boot at all.  Finally resorted to restore to get the computer working again.

    How to exit this loop?

    OK, here's what I discovered.

When you get the error message mentioned above, you can hold down the SHIFT key and press the F10 key.  This will put you in the command prompt.

At the command prompt, type: bcdedit [then press enter]

so to solve my problem I hade type: bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot [then press enter]

This put the loop I lived and finished restoring Windows 8
