Bruce:
The problem has been fixed (I think) but in a most unusual way. Let me explain.
When I was closing down to give the computer a rest yesterday, there was a pop up saying that vprotector expected to close. He really wanted the process of closing until I clicked on finish the process. Curious to know what vprotector is, I searched on the net and got a lot of shots, saying: it is a virus and should be deleted pronto. So I searched the hard drive for the vprot. * and found in the folder program files for AVG!
I then went to AVG to see if it's really a part of AVG and they said yes. If there is a problem with vprot, the toolbar is at fault and needs to be reinstalled. There was one click here to download and run the part of the program to fix the problem. However, I had WebRoot antivirus running that stopped the download of this program as a virus. Because I trust AVG, I've disabled WebRoot and reinstalled the AVG search bar.
I haven't restarted WebRoot and computer flying along as it should, and OE is the link to IE when I click on a link as it has always done.
Seems to me to be the faulty AVG toolbar and a cross with two virus programs upward was at fault. Thank you for your time. Your reply gave me a chance to think differently this problem could arise.
Computers are really complicated machines and we have to be complicated to deal with their problems.
Thanks again,
Fred

Backup Windows XP to create the complete image of the system?
Original title: Windows Xp backup for the new update to reader.
I want to get a new larger internal hard drive. However the idea of trying to reinstall all my programs and settings have discouraged me it doing so. My Mac is great in that it allows me to back up my entire system with time machine on an external hard drive, and I can put it all right even if I accidentally erase my whole machine.
Window xp Backup Wizard can do the same?
Under the Backup Wizard tool, it seems to be a selection that says that "all information on this computer. So once I have replaced my old internal drive with the new and improved, can simply paste in my external drive in the USB port and reinstall everything as it is? is this possible?
I realized with the technical stuff you just can't assume anything and that things go wrong or you need something more...
Hi Yes,
This isn't the functionality of Windows XP. However, you can find this feature in Windows 7.

Until a few days ago, this problem didn't exist - I know. My CD/DVD drive is no longer recognized in Windows Explorer, BIOS or Device Manager. It doesn't, however, appears briefly in Windows Explorer in the analysis of the security of the computer. It allows to open/close, etc. and when it is visible, I am able to open the drive and see the contents of the CD. Then it disappears again. The light flashes indicating that he works and I can hear it trying to read the CD. I uninstalled iTunes because I read somewhere that this may have been the issue - but that didn't work. I tried the system restore, registry cleaners, removal of upper/lower case filters from the registry, used the program Fixit found on the site Web of Microsofts etc and still no luck. Any ideas? The computer is a gateway SX2850 (?) with Windows 7 Home Premium installed.

Hi, I'm in big trouble.
I just try to repair my Windows XP service pack 2/3 upgrade.
The system asked me to save the copy, but after trying to save the computer freezes.
I try several time to reinstall and now the system asked me to reinstall the software, I need to reinstall the earlier version of Windows that has been '2000', but unfortunately I throw away a few months ago.
I bought a new hard drive were I have installed a new version of XP 64-bit.
Is it possible to transfer all my documents, files, settings, etc in the new hard drive?
All advice avaiable?
Thanks in advance.
CICO.
Disconect your drive, insert your disk again as master, install Windows XP on the new drive. Once msupdate was executed and the manufacturers drivers have been installed and the sys works ok.
Stop, connect the old drive as slave, restart
Transfer data as needed. You may need to "take possession of records" - see victory help (donot attempt the transfer settings)
