WRT1900AC VPN...

I see options passthtough VPN is this router, but no provision for VPN from the internet.  Has it been to see it in the near future (without having to go to third party firmware)?

Other routers in this class have supported VPN, but done wrong.  I bought a netgear nighthawk before getting the WRT1900 and she is supported VPN worked for windows, but no documentation or configuration options for security, he was not a real solution.  I returned the netgear as technical support was not able to answer any question of VPN.

I would LOVE to see OpenVPN fully supported in this unit, because that would make a solution entirely "rounded" for power users.

Thank you!

You can use the OpenWRT firmware. Information on the firmware OpenWRT for the WRT1900AC can be found in the post at the top of the forum list.

Yes, the IP address that starts with 192.168.x.x is a private LAN and non routable IP address.

Your ISP Modem must also be a router with a DHCP server.

    Two Options:

    1. Configure the Modem for Bridge Mode or DMZ
    2. Configure the same port forwarding rule in the modem to the IP address of the WRT1900AC (192.168.44.x). If the modem passes to the WRT1900AC which redirects to the PPTP in Windows 8 Server.
  • WRT1900AC cannot configure VPN

I CURRENTLY HAVE 2 WIRELESS ROUTERS AN ASUS RT-N56U WHICH WAS EASY to set UP WITH ExpressVPN. COMING TO EXPAND MY NETWORK & IMPROVE USING A LINKSIS WRT1900AC. UNABLE TO SET TO THE TOP OF THE SAME. BOTH ROUTERS ARE HARD CABLES TO THE ISP ROUTER & WILL BE POSITIONED AT DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE HOUSE FOR COVER. I HAVE THE ExpressVPN PAST & DETAILS USER password, LIST OF GLOBAL SERVER ADDRESSES & THEIR ADDRESSES IP CONCERNED.

CAN SOMEONE HELP ME IN THE BASIC CONFIGURATION. I AM NOT AN IT WIZZ BUT YOU CAN FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ESPECIALLY WITH SCREENSHOTS SUPPORTED. HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

    OK gents,

Answers very well. It gives me a lot to think so thank you very much.

Temporarily, I currently have 2 routers connected switch wired to asus to linksys with the linksys being connected on the local network of the asus through the cable network. The asus is configured as L2TP that allows the details of user, password & VPN server. Use them in this way gives me the IP addresses associated with the address of the server used. This IP address is provided if connected to a router. Probably not the fastest or the best way but will suffice until I have work on your tech talk.  I have an ASUS RT - 68U (which has the VPN Client) available to replace the Asus RT - 56U to come. I can use the 56U on the edge of the property similar to the linksys. Trial & error prototyping will I hope make me it in the absence of knowledge or understanding.

Can someone advise on potential pitfalls with the current configuration or plans for the future?

    Thanks again.

  • WRT1900AC OpenVPN sees only not the side of the router LAN

I have a WRT1900AC with the OpenVPN server, put in place.

Can I access with my laptop running the OpenVPN client on the internet (the router is in one State other than me).

I ping the hotspot side WAN, internet access at the router.

I can't see or ping devices on the side of the router LAN.

The address of the router LAN is 10.2.3.1 which I can not ping when I am connected through the OpenVPN client.

The OpenVPN am assinged IP is 172.19.13.3 and the DHCP server on the LAN router is not a fixed range of 10.2.3.35 to 10.2.3.50 with cameras with IP in the range of the DHCP server.

I guess that once I connect to the OpenVPN server in the router it automatically will fill for the devices connected to the router ports, is this correct? Y at - it a setting I need to change?

    Thanks in advance!

The router firmware is up-to-date (we keep turned on the auto update feature).

Today, I can access the devices connected to the router ports via the VPN.

I do nothing else than yesterday, but it works... so for now, the issue is resloved...

I guess I had the correct settings.

I hate it when things get fixed, but I don't know why!

    Thank you for your support.

  • WRT1900AC and OpenVPN with Macbook Pro

I'm trying to set up a VPN connection to my home network so I can access the shares on a WD My Cloud EX2 NAS device when I am absent in the same way as when I'm home and connected to the network.  Here is where I am: I have installed successufully Tunnelblick on my mac and to set up OpenVPN on the WRT1900AC.  When you are connected from an external network I can access my router and NAS using the LAN IP addresses as well as ping devices on the local network (printer, etc.).  What I can't do, is see the NAS on my mac, or use the links I created folders in the shares on the NAS.

I thought that the function of OpenVPN was supposed to connect to my network, I would be able to access these things?  Am I misunderstanding something here?  I understand that this connection will not carry my internet traffic through my router, but I don't care on this issue at this stage.  I just want a perfect access to the NAS at home.

    Thank you!

VPN solutions have problems with DNS. I recommend the use of links address IP NAS instead of the NAS network name if that's how the links are currently configured.

  • WRT1200AC/1900AC WIRED Intermittent connectivity software company (Cisco) VPN - resolved

I work from a Home Office 24 x 7 as a software engineer supporting the business intelligence world production for a credit/bank card issuer applications - so my 'stuff' has to work.  My components materials network and the machines are "top-shelf."  I recently added a WRT1900AC router and have started to feel the intermittent connectivity WIRED to VPN my company (Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client).  To be clear, this has nothing to do with the setting of the OpenVPN server is available via the user interface of the Linksys Smart Wi - Fi.  In any case, after many hours of research and changes the configuration on the router (with a significant amount of curse and aggravation), I solved the problem by using the areas of prioritization of media and bandwidth downstream from the HMI.  Question a also experienced, but to a lesser extent, during the wireless connection.  It was confusing, since generally the when router problems occur, they seem to be more related to the Wi - Fi connection rather than wired.  Anyway, I wanted to share this info with other poor souls that might have been ostrasized of their family, friends and colleagues as a result of this almost apocalyptic puzzle.

You are welcome. Happy holidays! Certainly happy to clarify as needed.

  • VPN works with Sierra?

I understand that the VPN does not yet, with the Sierra

Is this a Bug? or, if this possibility has been deleted?

Can we expect support once again with one of the 10.12. # updates?

This is a very important feature to my office with it, we will not update for Sierra.

    Thank you

VPNS work very well in Sierra as long as they don't use PPTP. Support for PPTP has been removed because it is not safe. By using a PPTP based VPN is useless. Your data is not safe.

  • Tips to add a VPN router to my current network configuration

    Dear all

My apologies if the answer to this question already exists, however, I searched in many situations and none seem to match what I'm after.

I currently have an ISP modem/router in Bridge mode connected to a TC of Apple which is my wireless router, I have 2 Express airport connected to this acting as the extensors of the range.  I have a VPN service through the MyPrivate network I activate on the desired device when required and everything works fine.

What I want to do now is to be able to use my AppleTV and burning Amazon via the VPN as well so you need to add a VPN router in the configuration.  I want to finish with 2 wireless networks running together for these devices who need VPN and those who are not.  I don't want to lose the opportunity to extend the network to express it however airport.

If someone could explain to me if this is possible and if so how do I set up the network.

    Thanks in advance

    Mark

Basically you would need a device that supports VPN-passthrough and VLANS for your goals of networking. MyPrivate network, seems to be a VPN SSL, which is a user-server configuration. In other words, you install a client VPN on your Mac and you connect to the VPN network MyPrivate server to establish a VPN tunnel.

Networking two or more "separated", should be using a router that supports VLAN services. Each segment of VIRTUAL local area network, in essence, would be a separate, she either wired or wireless network or a combination of both. This would probably be the 'easiest' part for the installation program.

Now how combining the two would be the question, and I don't know what would be the best way, or even if it is possible.

    A few thoughts:

    • Use a router that supports VLANS. Create at least two VIRTUAL LAN segments. One for Apple TV & Burns, one for Internet access in general. Connect the device to VPN client host on the first segment, and configure for Internet sharing.
    • Download a dedicated VPN network application that supports hosting of third-party VPN clients, like yours. You would still need a router that supports VLAN to provided separate network segments.
    • Hire a consultant network. Let them know what you the goals of networking and ask them to offer potential solutions.
  • Settings lost VPN - iOS 10.0.2

I had stored in my iPad VPN settings. VPN connections worked well until the latest iOS update. Now ALL my VPN connections disappeared. To make it even worse-, I am unable to put once again, because there are new mandatory fields: VPN type and shared key. I don't have the slightest idea how to fill them because I never need them when connecting to the VPN through my iMac - please see the screenshot.

It drives me crazy. I welcome any suggestion.

Prepare for removal of PPTP VPN before upgrade you to iOS 10 and macOS Sierra

Preparation for iOS system administrators 10 and macOS Sierra should stop using PPTP VPN connections. Learn about alternatives, you can use to protect your data.

If you have configured a PPTP VPN server, 10 iOS and macOS users Sierra will not be able to connect to it. iOS 10 and macOS Sierra will remove any profile VPN PPTP connections when a user upgrades from their device.

Even if the PPTP protocol is always available on iOS 9 or an earlier version or OS X El Capitan and earlier, we do not recommend that you use it for secure, private communication.

    Alternatives for PPTP VPN connections

Try one of these other VPN protocols for authentication by user that are safer:

    • L2TP/IPSec
    • IKEv2/IPSec
    • Cisco IPSec
    • VPN SSL clients on the App Store, such as those of AirWatch, Aruba, Check Point, Cisco, F5 Networks, MobileIron, NetMotion, Open VPN, Palo Alto Networks, Pulse Secure and SonicWall

I use the client VPN L2TP iOS 10.

Firewalls in the system is disabled.

Typical VPN connections, you use the DNS server of your iPhone and not the DNS server of the network corresponding to your server.  In addition, Hello services are only available on the LAN.  So you have no way to resolve names to IP adrdesses for the network, you are VPNing.

The only easy solution from an iPhone is to make a list of IP addresses and use them to connect instead of host names.  using IPs will work as long as your ISP does not also use the same internal (like 192.168 or 10.0) IP address than the network that you connect to.
