Zoning properly esxi host

Hello

I'm new to CF. I have an esxi host, I need to create a zone for on my FC switch. When I look in vSphere, I see two addresses for my QLogic HBA. It shows 20:00:00:26: ff: xx:xx:22:01 21:00:00:26: ff: xx:xx:22:01.

I go to my FC switch to create an alias. Then, I add the wwn as a member. If I expand WWN and one from above, there a sign next to him, if I ignore + the + and add it like this, as well the added 21:00 and 20:00. However, if I develop the + and forest down in it and then add him, only one of these addresses gets added.

No idea what is good?

It is not really specific to vmware, as each server I have shows the same thing, I just found this community more useful

Zoning, you would typically use the WWPN (World Wide Port name) that is assigned to a single port. With a single HBA port you have a WWN/WWNN (World Wide Node name) and a single WWPN, and for multi-port cards, you'll always have a unique WWN/WWNN but several WWPN, which can be used for different areas. (maybe World Wide Port name - Wikipedia help)

    Hello all, I have

I have a lab environment virtual running in VMware Workstation for Linux v12, and my ESXi hosts do not work correctly on one of the virtual networks. All my troubleshooting suggests a problem with nested ESXi hosts that may be a bug, but I want to assure you that I did everything properly first. That's why I post here with the hope that if I made a mistake that maybe someone else can point out he me.

    Physical system

8 core Intel Xeon 2.1 GHz CPU

    128 GB of RAM

OS - kernel Linux 64 - bit w/3.19.0-32-generic Linux Mint 17.3 (fully updated from this announcement)

VMware Workstation 12 Pro - 12.1.1. Build-3770994 (fully updated from this announcement)

    Nested ESXi host VM

ESXi v6.0.0 (Build 3825889, completely updated from this announcement)

4 cards 'physical' (only 3 used for now)

-all use the e1000 NIC hardware virtual, but also tried vmxnet3 NIC with no difference

    -vSwitch0 use vmnic0 & 1 vmnet16 of virtual network in a pair of active / standby

    -vSwitch1 uses vmnic2 on network virtual vmnet18

-vmk0 used for management on vSwitch0 and vmk1 for iSCSI on vSwitch1

-"Promiscuous" mode and forged passes enabled on all Port vSwitch groups (activating or turning off these features makes no difference)

    Test performed until now

I checked that all the IP addresses and network masks used are correct.

With the help of vmkping I ping other nodes on the network vmnet16 with success.

With the help of vmkping I tried to ping the other nodes in the network vmnet18, but that has failed.

I have depolyed other non - ESXi VMs on the vmnet18 network, and they are able to ping each other, but are unable to ping or ping by the ESXI host.

I tried various material virtual NIC as mentioned before, but without changes in the results.

I tried to use only local network instead of the vmnet18 guest network segments with no change in results.

When I find out the status of the network adapters on the ESXi host through vCenter or host incorporated client vmnic0 & 1 time display network information, but vmnic2 shows no networks. Yet, I know that there is a network with different VM communicate on it. Moreover, I was able to get all of this work on a Windows system running 10 Workstation (this is the laptop that my employer gives me with).

Having built nested ESXi labs on different platforms as well as physical environments in the past, I'm very confused as to why I can't get this special configuration to work. At this point my gut tells me that this is probably a bug any with the nested themselves ESXi hosts. Since I can get all this work on vmnet16 including the management of ESXi hosts and the VCSA that I use, I am sure that my vSwitch configuration is correct (other than the IP address space and vmnic configurations is bascially the same). Because I can get other virtual machines to communicate over the network vmnet18 I don't see how can be a VMware Workstation for the issue physical Linux host. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? I read on the ESXi hosts nested under VMware Workstation after having known problems and bugs with networking. If anyone else has experienced this?

Thanks for any help others can provide!

    Kind regards

    Patrick

Well, the problem is now resolved. The problem was what covelli was trying to explain, but I couldn't because the physical host network adapters being mentioned.

The problem on the Linux host, but it was a problem of permissions with the virtual Ethernet adapters. The following article has the fix:
With the help of Ethernet virtual cards in Promiscuous Mode on a Linux host (287) | VMware KB

Even if I launched the workstation under the root user I have yet met this problem and which still makes no sense to me, but change the permissions solve the problem. I was not getting an error message on my Linux Mint and Ubuntu system, but when I tried on a second box of Linux Mint that I just got the error has been generated, and the error message was the above link it contains.

    So, here's what I learned:

    (1) the question has nothing to with a VMware Workstation definition that you can configure.

    (2) the question has nothing to do with a physical network card.
    (3) the question has nothing to do with any vmnic on the nested ESXi host.

    (4) apparently virtual Ethernet adapters are not the correct permissions when created.

All you have to do to fix this is:

    (1) open a terminal.

    (2) run the command ' sudo chmod a + rw/dev/vmnet * "(don't forget to run this each time that you create a new virtual network).

You can also create a group, as shown in the link above and simply give this group the correct permissions. Personally, I think it's easier to just give everyone the rw permission.

I appreciate the help that others have offered. I did not understand what was asked for in previous answers because of the terms that have been used.

  • VMware ESXI host Client is not compatible with the Ipad

    Hi all

First of all I want to say that I am very happy with the introduction of the ESXI host Client, it's a very good start for not having a vSphere client to be installed.

One thing I was hoping too is compatible with mobile devices, for example, an IPad. Unfortunately this isn't the case. Not for IOS 8 or 9

I tried several browsers without a bit of luck.

    There are several problems;

    • The page is not scaling properly
    • The top bar is not visible, you can, for example, sign out
    • The Web page expands when you rotate the page on the iPad horizontally, not having not not able to see the Web page complete.

I found these problems in Tech Preview, build 2015.08.25.3015331 combined with ESXI 6 with the latest patch

    Kind regards

    Marcel

    Hi Marcel,.

Thanks for pointing out these problems. We have made a few improvements wrt. support iPad in the last version of the adventure. Could you update and let me know how it goes?

  • 5.5u2 ESXi host will not mount CF data warehouses

I am the admin in a test lab, so many times I have to "make do" with what I have for the material.  I recently reassigned a R910 Dell with 64 GB memory in a 5.5u2 ESXi host.  It has some storage SAS (2.5 to) and some (CT 11) directly connected FC storage and some FC HBAs for use by VMs to send data to the tape library.

Recently, we had a power failure, and this host does not reconnect to the CF storage when she returned to the top.  (Duty to "make do" with what I means not having is not the capabilities of UPS).  I can tell the host of HBA see it properly and sees the LUNS on RAID controllers, but refuses to mount.  I go through the add storage Wizard, and he sees that there is a store of data storage VMFS, but always refuses to mount.  I also tried to remove the redirection to the two FC HBA that have been set up for this purpose, but it made no difference.

I have now three users unable to work because they cannot access their virtual machines on storage of this FC.  I can't even transfer them off to use the SAS storage form.

I think it might be the cause file system damage, but I'm not sure.  Someone at - it suggestions?

Have you ever tried to set up data warehouses from the command line (see, for example, http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011387)?

  • Impossible to withdraw, migrate, etc., VM on the ESXi host

Earlier, the room of my loss of cooling infrastructure hosting servers suffered vSphere causing several ESXi hosts to closure without notice due to excessive heat.  Needless to say that the results were chaotic.  While I recovered/restored most of the systems, a problem seems to persist.  It is a virtual machine that is impossible to remove, move, etc. due to locks on files active.  The option in the .vmx to "Add to the inventory" file in the data store is also disabled.  However, this virtual machine is not displayed with a "vim - cmd vmsvc/getallvms" command.  In fact, investigating the locks on files, it doesn't appear with a ' vmkvsitools lsof | grep VM_Name command"and no result back with a ' ps | grep VM_Name command.  The host in question has also been restarted and updated (5.1 update 2, Update 3) so a simple reboot does not clear the locks.  So, the question is; How can I get rid of this virtual machine so I can properly re - add to vCenter?  Any help would be appreciated.

Then just do a kill-9 20156 and you are all set - this kill everyone and goes out by the force of the virtual machine and your hair will be free

  • VCM can collect and report on versions VIB ESXi hosts?

Hello. I need to make sure that all of my guests have some version of the NetApp NFS (https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP1237939/html/html/GUID-735E5961-E3FB-4105-A8F8-37F6444B68BC.html) plugin, and I was hoping that VCM could pick this up, since VUM somehow cannot properly report on the question of whether or not this plugin is installed in each ESXi host.

However, I can't find any good data on this in VCM, or documentation of VCM, or using a web search.

    Does anyone know?

    Not at this time.

  • ESXi host have not of virtual machines when connected through vCenter

    Hi all

I am facing a problem with 1 ESXi hosts. All other hosts are working properly.

All hosts are managed by vCenter 5.1 VM. When I select this problematic host in vCenter and click on the virtual computers tab, it does not display anything other than a blank page. Then, it throws an error saying that the object has been deleted or has not completely created. The screenshot of the error popup is attached.

However, if I connect directly to the host through the VI client, it does not throw the error and I can see the virtual machines it. If I have vmotion the vms during this host, I do not see these virtual machines via vcenter but I connect directly to the host and I can see the virtual machines. They work very well.

What could be the cause of this problem.

    Thank you

    AG

I would try restart the management agent on the host troubled or removing of vCenter and time.

  • ESXi host does not connect more after a restart of the service LogInsight

    Hello

I put several (5.1 U1) ESXi to use the newly installed LogInsight. they sent him their event properly. I had to restart the log service Insight. After the reboot, the hosts stopped sending events. the vcenter continued, however.

I had to reload the syslog on the hosts to send their event to the perspicacity of newspaper.

    esxcli system syslog reload

any idea? I guess that's not normal behavior

    Thank you

    Eric

Hi Eric, this is unfortunately expected behavior. What you are experiencing is a bug in ESXi. More information is available in the Guide to installation/Admin under the troubleshooting log Insight section or at the following article: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2003127.

ESXi newspapers stop arriving at the Insight Journal

After you restart the log service Insight, ESXi hosts syslog messages stop arriving at the Insight Journal.

    Problem

In Insight Journal configuration changes require that you restart the log Insight service. After the restart, syslog RSS of ESXi are no longer available.

    Cause

Some versions of ESXi stop balls sending if connectivity to the remote syslog listener is stopped, even for a short moment. This problem affects the following versions of ESXi, depending on the communication protocol used.

  • Single recovery of ESXi host disaster using boot USB device.

Here's the scenario. I have an ESXi host 5.0 running from a USB device on a server blade using shared virtual machine network storage and is scratch storage. I have a failure catastrophic host. Can I just plug the USB device into another blade in the same chassis and start getting my VMs back operational.

In addition, in a similar scenario if I have two devices USB with the same configuration information about them can use as a backup in case of failure of the USB device or is it config info constantly being written to the USB device which is used at the time.

At the level of the configuration, you need not, this means that as long as you take a regular backup of the config, it is ok.

But when you need to set up a backup system if a production system does not go and change the Server Blade, be sure to provide a coherent zoning and LUN masking for the blade, if VMware will see the same number of unit logic and tables as before. Same thing applies for VLANS, switches to which the new blade is connected must be configured in the same way that the old blade was (its ports must be in the same VLAN), or some VM can't see the network correctly.

    1. If a system is corrupt and you just need a fresh USB boot

Plug a USB stick fresh, possibly already installed, boot, and then send the archived configuration, reboot

    2. If a full blade goes wrong, you must change the server.

Put the WWNS of the HBAS in the same areas that the blade HBA has failed

Present the WWN of the HBA to the storage group

If you use the same chassis slotin, the network should be ok, but if not, put the internal ports of the switch module blade matches the new blade in the same VLAN as port internal used for blade failed.

If you use VirtualFabric / VirtualConnect on 10GBE NICs, you must set up the same way, it was too much on the failed system.

I hope that its more clear now!

  • ESXi host does not synchronize with NTP - causes HA config failures?

    Hello

We are currently implementing some Cisco UCS systems. We using blades Cisco UCS B200 M1 (x 5670, 48 GB of RAM)

Everything seems to work fine except these little things, which seems to be related.

1 NTP synchronization is not happenning, or happening very slowly.

    2. a 10 cluster host, when it is configured for HA, has many guests who fail to be configured for HA (for example we had only 2 guests get properly configured for HA out of 10).

Initially, I thought REP 1 and 2 were not related, but then I remember reading somewhere that the ESXi host must have simultaneously for HA to work.

    On question No. 1:

10 guests have a difference of 5-6 minutes between them. Curiously, the first hosts that are connected to a HA cluster, if their duration is similar, they wil work.

But others are more than 1 to 2 minutes off, they will fail. Our NTP is configured on 2 internal NTP servers, which syncs with the outside world - the 2

    NTP servers are:

The default gateway of each ESXi

    The network Core switch

We know that the NTP servers work correctly because our advertising is synchronized with them and we checked on our domain controller local time main external time source.

    Debug information

    Output of /etc/ntp.conf

    ~ # cat /etc/ntp.conf
restrict default kod nomodify notrap nopeer
    restrict the 127.0.0.1
    Server 10.*
    Server 10.*
    driftfile /etc/ntp.drift

Everything has been configured through the GUI, I show the output of ntp.conf for confirmation.

We tried to restart the hosts (without success).

Everyone knows what we can do to solve this?

    Thank you

    Ionut

    You tried to restart NTP.

  • Ping IP of ESXi host fails after reboot? Newbie

    VMWare ESXi 4.0.0 ReleaseBuild 171294 - HP ProLiant DL360 G4

The server turned craps so we got a used that even make and model and shared disks.  Now we cannot connect with the customer and we cannot ping, ping times out.  When we ping from the console we get inconsistent results, can ping ok, the first IP addy and then fails on the second ping, or it connects to the second IP addy, but fails to ping first that it resolve the hostname constantly.  We stopped and started the management network and Management Agents a couple of times but no joy.

I have the Articles KB 1008446 ping to the ESXi host IP fails after reboot, 1003490 restart the Management Agents on an ESX or ESXi Server and 1003677 Tech Support Mode of emergency support.

What must we do to recover the server to an operational state? If there is other information needed to help us please let me know.

And, what distro and version is ESXi 4.0.0 inspires?  I read that it is Redhat, but I couldn't find the version.

I have worked with Soloris, Linux and Aix over the years, so I am comfortable working from the cmd line if need be.

    Thank you

ESXi is not Linux. The VMkernel is VMware. The small console that runs the VMkernel is busybox. ESX has a VM management based on RedHat 5, but here again the VMkernel is all VMware.

I would check that the embedded NICs are working properly. Start with a linux rescue disk and test.

If all extracted would reset the system configuration from the yellow Console screen. Your configuration will be lost, but your machines virtual etc. will be OK. You will need to add to the inventory.

  • Mac OS x won't start on mac pro esxi host

We have the latest mac pro machine functioning as a construction of host 5.5.0 esxi 2718055.  We have setup the virtual Mac machine of the as a waiter in a magic triangle to our Mac OSX windows domain configuration.  Everything was up and running for some time now not really used because we delayed the purchase of our projected deployment Mac until this year.  I logged on today, and he says he has several updates and necessary to restart, so we issued the command reboot. Now the machine won't start upward.  It starts the boot process you see the Apple logo and progress bar starts moving on a 1/4 of the way and then it just turned off. I tried several of the commands below in the link, but nothing works, it just turns off. I tried to use my mac with vm ware fusion and the connection to the host and always change. I have triple checked that I am in the comments window active when you press these commands, but the problem is it only stays on during approximately 5 seconds then stops. I have removed from the inventory of esxi and re added, as well as restarted the ESXi host as well.  The virtual machine is sitting on the local storage of the esxi server.

    https://support.Apple.com/en-AU/HT201255

Has anyone else had a problem similar to this?  I'm getting to this section and the progress bar starts to go, but then stops and turns off virtual machine.  How can I enter in address this further.

Okay, so I went through the list and now I got using the command option r. tried before but maybe I press the keys long enough.  I was using my mac book pro and pro fusion to do all this. Couldn't make it work when you use the client heavy vsphere on my windows machine. Repair disk permissions is grayed out. I ran check disk permissions and got a ton of errors, ran check disk and he stopped saying repair the disk. Ran repair disk and he stopped to say that he cannot repair the disk, backup as many files as possible, reformat the drive and restore your backup files.

Is there another way to try to fix this sucker, or is he at this point a POS and build a new one?

  • 8.3 OMSA @ ESXi 6.0 U2 @ R515-> cannot log into the website OMSA to ESXi HOST.--

    Hello guys.

I've updated my ESXi of U3 5.0 to 6.0 U2 and I lost my OMSA. I can not connect from the web page.

For the update of the host, I used this ISO file:
    . VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.0.0.update02-3620759.x86_64-Dell_Customized-A00.iso

After that, I installed OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-WINX64-8.3.0-1908_A00. EXE to a VM W2012S to this host. I can open the web site to connect, but when I try to connect to my ESXi HOST, I received this message: failed to connect... connection error.

When I saw that I began to check a few things, I ran: 'list of vib software esxcli' and I saw:

  • Recently added that in environment VMware ESXi hosts do not appear

I'm running worm vFoglight 6.7. recently, I added 2 new 5.1 ESXi host and 2 data stores into my vsphere cluster. These new fabrics do not appear in vfoglight under dash VMware environment. I tried to update the server vCenter added by re activating the latter. Without success. Could someone help me how to get it to update.

Give a washer, they can probably find what is happening and turn it on.  It is very rare that I've ever seen an upgrade fails or not be able to recover the worst of him.

  • Connect 2 ESXi hosts to array SAS MD3220

I have two R620s who go to the server as a host for the VM for several web servers (in a Windows NETWORK load balancing) and two other R620s which will be considered as physical database servers (in a Failover Cluster) and have to apply to a single Bay MD3220 SAS. The DB cluster will host the databases shared on a virtual disk and a data store shared on another virtual drive on the Bay. ESXi hosts will store their vmx/vmdk files elsewhere on the Board.

I'm still waiting for delivery of the second DB server, but in the meantime, I installed the first and he speaks with success to the table - I run MDSM on that server and the server is successfully connected to DB and filestore volumes. guess I'm having a little problem with the second server.

I installed ESXi on both VM hosts. I guess the next step is to save in MDSM, but MDSM is not automatically host port identifiers as assigned. Does?

My next guess would be to identify manually port host identifiers, but how can I determine what are their respective IDs? I couldn't see anything obvious in the BIOS.

I have currently two independent hosts to VM with ESXi installed v5.1 - I have not created a VM vCenter again because the host does not have access to the storage Bay (!), so I can pair together for HA hosts, etc. As a broader question, given what I want to achieve, how should I be going to this topic?

Indeed, you will need to register the VMware hosts in MDSM yourself. There is no agent to have a VMware host register automatically on the SAN (at the regular difference in Windows and linux).

You may be able to find the WWN of the HBA SAS in the SAS controller bios.

The only other way I know not to register the correct WWN with the server is intrusive, but not so hard:

-Stop your Windows (cluster SQL) servers

    -Stop the VMware servers

    -power of the MD3220 downwards

    -power up the MD3220

-power up to one of the servers Windows (one that has MDSM on it)

-power up the VMware Server 1

In MDSM, you can now save this first VMware Server.

Turn on the other 2 servers and register the 2nd VMware Server.

I found that only shutting down 1 VMware server is not erase the memory of the MD whose WWNS are connected and there is no way to find which ports you enter the WWN in question.
