10 automatic update of unusual things I believe

High tower HP 2000 240 ca Win 7 Home was on IE 9, but automatic update is on IE 10 now.  ESET antvirus

I noticed that IE 10 seemed faster, but sometimes when the lap top is put to market seems not to want to go on a chosen site (ie: hotmail) and bogs or stalls and gets on it... or I've close IE 10 then raise him again.

1.) now it's just the computer control itself and charging what it should?

2.), I ran, control / alt/delete, see Task Manager...   I saw a program called "toast" running. (he works and goes)    Don't remember this before, or what?   Should it be there?  I've read conflicting things on toast?

3.) since IE 10 installed World email Client (which is used by my employer and accessible home) does not work properly, but it worked fine before?  I can go to the customer world and read the mail, but I can't transfer mail, & I can partially compose mail, put in address and subject line, but cannot do anything in the body of the mail?  My HP destop running XP is very good with the Client world.  I don't know if it's because of IE 10... but nobody else seems to have no problems.

I don't know if it's all IE 10 related?   Not sure to toast what I read?  If I delete IE 10 some say you spoil stuff like registry and cause more troubles.  I don't have a clue that the computer has been set to auto load browser updated.  I think that this must be set to the user's choice... not auto.  Too many glitches often.

I know it's a lot, thank you Ron3033

Hi Ron,

You're welcome and happy, he helped

All the best,

  • What Windows settings or services likely to affect Firefox automatic update?

Automatic update works do not is a common problem but in my case, the culprit is probably not on the side of Firefox Firefox. I suspect this due to the fact that I can't upgrade almost any of my programs installed if they were launched during a session before the session is disconnected.

The thing is I disabled a number of Windows services and I see this behavior for probably as long as I use this configuration optimized. Here is a list of my services system as well as their boot options and the State.

I'm pretty sure I found the culprit at the service of the experience of the Application. Apparently if you have disabled Windows locks the particular executable in an overzealous manner.

  • Stop the automatic updates.

I won't use Firefox 29 or newer to the interface introduced v29 shit it's user friendly and bring some missing thing the v28 (they may be survivals of an older profile), no. Restorer Classic theme does not bring them back.
The above is here simply to try to stop suggestions on the use of v29

I tried to go into the menu options Firefox > Options > advanced > never search for updates, but this does not prevent updates.
I had to uninstall Firefox 29 5 times today, each time after he said to "never check updates."

Not to start a war here, but Mozilla won't return to the entire user interface that they spent 2 years working on. That would be a downgrade to them. Mozilla is all pushing forward. Some users may the hate, but it's that there are other alternatives such as the Restorer of classic theme for people who dislike the design Australis.

There is a way to disable updates by going through the menu Options, but after this, when you go to help > on Firefox, it would update regardless of this setting.
    2 methods here, pick a.
You can set these prefs in about:config to turn off the automatic update:

    App.Update.auto - false

    App.Update.Enabled - false

    App.Update.Silent - false

Or you can use this method to do it for you:
You can create a new file in a text editor (default values are: Notepad of Windows, TextEdit for Mac and Linux text editor) called user.js . When you save user.js, is ensure that it's file type is all FILES like leaving as it's going to add the extension .txt (user.js.txt) and it will not work. Place this file in your profile folder. See link below to find out how to access the file

After you create the folder, simply add the following to your user.js file, save and close, restart Firefox

    // turn off application updates:
    user_pref("app.update.enabled", false);

  • recover programs after the installation of automatic updates

Without any warning whatsoever, my computer shuts down as automatic updates are installed. I lose all open windows that I work with. When the computer starts, my session is not restored. Files of works, open photo galleries, etc., don't open as well, if I lose my entire work session. If I try to "System Restore" which does not restore my previous session. This has happened on all computers (PC or laptop) I've owned. How can Windows or computer manufacturers with impunity do this sort of thing? There is no analogy, I can think of to describe the hideous and various annoyances behind this stupid practice. Our legislators should be informed of this type of crime on our privacy. It's like to be burglarized, having everything in your House upset, even stolen, and then having to put it all back together. It's like the gestapo of cyberspace.

I agree. This is, by far, my favorite less "feature" of Windows.

Looks like you'll have to (as you said) wound things manually. You should be able to go to the history menu (Firefox button > history) and look at the "recently closed tabs" and the submenus "recently closed windows" and restore a lot of what you had open. Also in the history menu, you can select "show all history" and can search if all sites you have been to.

  • Automatic update to 7.5 prevented a Skype to connect

Automatic update to 7.5 has prevented Skype to connect after entering the user name and password. I just get the circle of rotation. I have IE 11. It was working fine before this update. After some time she returned to the login page.

I tried UN-installing, re-installing Skype and almost every other thing that I find your suggestions. Nothing works.

I use this for business and now I can't use Skype, it is causing me a problem...

This has nothing to do with Skype, but the 'problem' is with the Antivirus software. Skype does not change the anti-virus settings, but AVG, when detection new application installed, by default might block its access to the Internet.

  • Would PREVENT you automatic updates and other changes

JO 8600 Pro.  Configuration of the wireless network.

I want to prevent the automatic updates.

There must be a way to stop the automatic firmware / software updates.  I have not found.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" particularly printers.

People update the firmware / software (not only HP) & some things suddenly do not work.

    I don't update * nothing * until I know what it is.

I just installed some new cartridges, not HP.  All of a sudden the printer is accessing internet & "Download".  She flashed quickly on the screen of the printer & I couldn't read what it says.

At the same time, he said something like '... then web printing will be also activated. "

I disabled specifically that, in the SAP when I 1st installation program for the printer.  Won't print web, it is useless.

Now, because I have replace a few carts, it's going to turn it back on for me?  Talk about balls of brass.

I canceled that download / stop the printer.  But of course, he had changed my settings & reactivated web printing.  (I disabled it again).

The next power on, printer took some download.  He did not said worth what - has just shown, "Downloaded X of Y" & showed progress.  I immediately cancelled again.

If there are no parameters to prevent no matter what auto FW / software updates, or if she simply ignores them, I'll have to bury the printer under the firewall.

    Thank you.

    Thanks RnR.

Here is a method to use a router to block devices to access the internet, which should work for many users.

I decided to use my router to block internet access to the printer.  This can quickly and easily be reversed or modified.  It has 2 basic steps:

1 assign the printer a static IP address.

    2. use the settings on the router to deny access to the internet to the static address.

I have a Cisco / Linksys router, but many brands & models have these basic features, which are accessed from EWS from the router (built-in web server), via a web browser.

HP support has the allocation of static IP address for printer more detailed instructions.

Here is the HP document a coating for my OJ Pro 8600 & some other models: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03781399/

It may be easier for most users to assign an HP printer a static address, using EWS of the printer rather than the screen of the printer.

Note: as a general rule, when you use a router to assign a static API for devices that the router would otherwise be assigned automatically (via 'DHCP'), the selected static address is outside the current range of addresses, the router can be used to assign addresses to devices on.  Many routers, that the current range of addresses, it can choose to assign DHCP addresses is visible in certain section / tab of the EWS router.

In my Cisco the current DHCP range appears under installation - basic setup - DHCP section:

    "IP range: 192.168.2.60 to 192.168.2.109.

So I chose an address static printer off this (192.168.2.XXX).

You should write down & save the selected API, in the case where there is no problem getting later printer (shouldn't be, but...).

Assign the printer a static API did not affect access to its built-in Web server (for me).

Once the static method API is assigned & recognized (by the router), use the settings of the router to block this address from internet access.  In my Cisco, it's under "Access Restrictions."  (You may need to turn the printer on / off; possibly reboot some computers, for the new static to be recognized address.)  Here's how I did in the Cisco:

Log on to the router EWS (login by default & password is admin/admin.  You must always change router PASSWORD values by default, for security reasons - then your neighbor or your child can't hack your router remotely).

Go to the tab "Access Restrictions" or similar.
Click on "Edit PC" and put in the "MAC address" of the printer. (found in the network printer config / settings).

    Save the MAC address settings.

Back on the homepage Internet access router, give this internet access policy (rule) a name.

    Then click on "Access."
Check "Everyday" and "24 hours" for time, to block the IPa at all times.
    Save the settings.

Now, the router will not allow this address to access the internet - for the specified hours, but the device (printer) can continue to communicate on the local network - all the time.

The same can be done for specific computers.  You want to block computers in kids' internet access on certain days / hours.

  • automatic update Windows defender

Windows Update is in my case to "check and inform", because I usually take a backup of the system disk before applying updates.
However, the windows defender updates happen every day, and I believe that they cannot break my computer.
I really wish Microsoft to separate the two updates: enabling windows Defender Update automatically, all while my preference of "check and inform" as regards to windows update in general.
Why should he go through the update of windows defender windows? Cannot make its own updates like any other antivirus on the market?

    Hi harrymc,.

Thanks for posting your request on the Microsoft Answers site.

Windows and the programs that ship with Windows, such as Internet Explorer and Windows Defender can be updated automatically by turning on automatic updating.  You can configure Windows to automatically install important updates and recommended updates. Optional updates are not downloaded or installed automatically. With the parameters value updates Windows Update to update, but let me choose whether to download and install, you can set Windows Defender to check the new definitions before a Windows Defender analyzes programmed.

To automatically check new definitions before Windows Defender at the request of scans (recommended)

    1. Click to open Windows Defender in Control Panel > Windows Defender

    2. click on tools and then click Options.

    3. under automatic scanning, make sure the automatically scan my computer (recommended) check box is enabled.

4 check for updated definitions before scanning them to check, and then click Save. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To manually check the new definitions for Windows Defender:

    1. Click here to open Windows Defender.

    2. click on the arrow next to the help button and then click Find updates.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  • Automatic updates jump in there and replace everything I do - stop my operation, while it installs

The automatic updates annoyingly pop up and my computer support - stop my operation while it does its thing.

Change the way you get updates.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial140.html

Understand the Extras in Windows Vista and Windows Update info is at the link above.

Try these Options; one that suits you:

Download updates but let me choose whether to install them - if you select this option, Vista will download the updates on your computer, but not install them automatically. If you want to install updates, then you must install them manually. You should only select this option if you have a reason to not install updates automatically. Only advanced users should use this option.

Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them - if you select this option, you'll be alerted when there are new updates available for download and install. You can then choose to download and install the updates that you want. This option should really be reserved for people who know exactly which updates they need, or those who have little access to the Internet.

    See you soon.

  • Automatic Update error code 646

I got an automatic update of 646 error trying to make updates on security update for

    Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 (KB980470)

    Filter junk e-mail in Outlook 2007 (KB981433)

    2007 Microsoft Office System (KB981715)

    Any ideas?

Sorry, you have problems getting your patches installed. I have a number of things for you to look at.  First of all, are your Windows Update and the Background Intelligent Transer Services set to Automaticand started . You can check these settings by typing services.msc in the search box of the start menu.

Sometimes in order to get patches to install correctly, you must perform these tasks manually.

    (1) Download Center to visit Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx.
    (2) search for each update code that begins with the letters "KB" and followed by a set of numbers (i.e. KB979309).
    3) click on the link for the download and then click on download and run.  You must accept the agreement of contract and then click on continue.
    (4) repeat this process for each download of updates Windows could not install.
    (5) to rerun the update from Microsoft, click find updates.  If all goes well, it will show that you are completely patched.

If this does not work, try to run the Microsoft OneCare safety scanner.  Sometimes it will solve problems of hidden registry, or erase viruses can prevent the installation of patches: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm. Click full service scan, and then Quick scan (full scan takes a long time to complete). Try the patches.

    See you soon,.

  • Automatic updates do not. Discovered when trying to install Security Essentials.

I have XP - Media Center Edition.  It has been updated to SP - 3 some time ago.  I've always used updates to power off, so I never see the process underway.

I just uninstalled Norton 360 and that he would upgrade to MS Security Essentials, but Setup has failed.  I then googled the error code and found an article that said that it could be related to not having all the updates.  I went and manually start the automatic updates and I found it is bombed on.  Then I checked the log and found that it worked very well until an automatic update around September 17, 2009.  After this, almost all the automatic updates failed.  I never know what I used the update to the power down of the method.

I found a post that says (Phase 1) stop the windows update routine and rename the folder "c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" and then restart the windows update routine.  Phase 2 was to force a reinstallation of Windows Update Agent.  I did these things and when I did an update, found that an update loaded for windows, but all other updates (for things like the Net.frame) and other applications, has failed.  Try to install Security Essentials also bombed.

I looked through the forums and found that most of the people are referred to an article on whether you installed the SP3 before restarting after repair or installation of SP2.  This doesn't seem to be my problem.

I hope that this story sounds familiar to someone who can guide me to a solution.  I still haven't yet installed virus protection program and really want to use the bulk of the security.

Thanks for any help you can give,

    John
