A large flat Virtual pass vs several virtual switches

experts,

What is the advantage of having a large flat Virtual pass Vs several virtual switches for all types of traffic of the virtual machine (management, Vmotion, Vm Network). Any improvement in performance.

What is the advantage to have the virtual machine and networking on two different VLANS.  improved performance or security?

Our current configuration has a virtual switch with all eight physical NICS are assigned.

Vswitch 0 <-vmnic0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

|

Management network (Vlan 100) <-Vmnic0 (active), Vmnic7 (at rest)

|

VMotion (Vlan 150) <-Vmnic7 (active), Vmnic 0 (standby)

|

The virtual machine network (vlan 100) <-Vmnic1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (all active)

We will be setting up a new environment Vmware (5.0) and I would like to configure two virtual switches as follows

Vswitch 0 <-assigning two physical network adapters (Vmnic 0, Vmnic 7)

|

Management network (Vlan 100) <-Vmnic0 (active), Vmnic7 (standby)

|

VMotion (Vlan 150) <-Vmnic7 (active), Vmnic0 (standby)

And allowing that Vlan 100 and 150 Vmnic0 and Vmnic7 traffic

Vswitch 1 <-assignment remaining interface cards physical network (Vmnic1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

|

Computer virtual network (vlan 101) <-Vmnic1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (all active)

Allow only the Vlan traffic 101 on above NIC

I am thinking propose above configuration.  If I go with above setup, I get an improvement in performance? or other benefits. Please explain?

I don't think that there should be no difference in performance in the two installation options that you have. The only advantage to create two vSwitches would be to simplify the configuration, less risk of errors if Setup lots of armies and easier to check quickly as the configuration is correct.

A small advantage with the creation of a large vSwitch is that you could (if you wish) experiment with the help of multi-NIC-vmotion in ESXi and assign several VMNIC for vMotion and it would be easy to give the VMNIC 'return' for the virtual machines more later if wanted.

    Hello

I need to understand how to move traffic labeled VMware VST to these virtual Fabric switch. Blades IBM HS22 connecting internally to the virtual switch between ports 1 to 14. I use 2 external ports (17-18), one connects to the Netgear switch and another to the other switch to virtual fabric. Did the same on the other virtual fabric switch. My Synology rackstation is configured with LUN iscsi that connect to the Netgear switch and I would like to connect my HS 22 rackstation blades. My main concern is that I can't ping the IP of netgear on the same interface vlan. I can ping my Synology diskstation to the netgear which are in the same vlan. NETGEAR and BNT switches are connected by cables DAC SFP +.

Even VLAN is also configured on Netgear switch. The default pvid is set as 1 on all interfaces, can I disable this? Do I need to use tagpvid-penetration on all interfaces.

Yes. Finally managed to do work. Tagged traffic now connects blades with ESXI 5.5 U2 to the Synology rackstation.

It was the same thing we had. ESXi 6.0 is not supported by this adapter emulex. Also ESXi 5.5 does not I think with the iSCSI driver. So I have updated drivers using esxcli.

  • Migrating from a distributed virtual switch pass

I have a cluster that is approved for business-more.  I would like the host to a distributed switch.  The configuration of the virtual switch is as follows:

4 NICs connected to a host, the NIC are part of an EtherChannel.  The network adapters are teamed up with ip route based on the hash of the IP.  All network adapters are connected to the same vSwitch with port groups created for access to the different VLANS

I did the following to try to migrate to the new distributed switch: I broke the EtherChannel and removed three network adapters on the virtual switch and assigns them to the distributed switch.  At the same time grouping NETWORK adapters on the virtual channel switch based on the originating virtual, we changed the port ID.  I then migrated the service console more for the new switch successfully distributed.  I have created groups of ports on the virtual switch.

The question is when I re - create the EtherChannel falls hosts on the network.  I have noted the following: "see attachment".

Anyone using EtherChannel with distributed switches?

    Any help would be appreciated...

How to configure etherchannel on your Cisco switch? You may not use LACP or PAgP. You must use "channel-group mode on.

  • NSX 6.1.5 - distribute Firewall rules are not applied to the empty virtual switches

    Hi all

We have a big problem since we have improved the NSX to version 6.1.3 to 6.1.5.

I get a bug following this procedure:

. In vSphere Client--> NSX, create a new virtual switch

. Distribuer distribute the firewall, create a rule to deny traffic between two survey periods. Example: source: all, destination: all, service: all, Action: reject, applies: the new virtual switch

. Connect two VMS to the virtual switch and you can test the other (this is false due to the firewall rule)

. Publish ANY changes on the firewall distribute (could not be related to our rule. Example to change its name to another rule), and the rule starts to operate.

    Additional steps:

    . Remove the firewall rule

. Identify the virtual machines in the virtual switch

. Re-create the firewall with applies rule: the virtual switch (still empty)

. Connect the virtual machines and ping between them. Yet once, the rule does not work.

. Publish ANY changes on distributed firewalls and the rule starts to operate.

NSX version 6.1.3 and 6.2.0 both work correctly. But I can't downgrade to 6.1.3 or upgrade to 6.2.0. 6.2.1 upgrade involves the upgrade of several other components.

    I use the following versions:

    . NSX 6.1.5

    . vCenter Version 5.5.0 Build 2414847

    . ESXi, 5.5.0, 2718055

    Please, any ideas?

    Thank you very much

    D.

She seems to be a bug in 6.1.5 NSX and there is no solution for this yet. There are workarounds, but none of them apply to my "fully automated" environment

We need to wait for a fix or upgrade to NSX 6.2.1 requiring an upgrade of several components as well.

  • Distributed Virtual Switch supporting guests with different numbers of natachasery

Our environment has had the same ESXi host model for some time. Each has interfaces from 2 to 10 GB for the traffic of the virtual machine. We use a virtual switch distributed with 2 uplinks. Now, we stand at a new environment where there are 2 types of hosts. (1) a small workload ESXi host with interfaces of 2 to 10 GB and (2) a large load of work sESXI host with 4 to 10 GB interfaces. They are seperasted in 2 groups (large and small workload workload).

I had planned to share a Distributed Switch between the 2 groups, so I could move freely between them according to the needs. The only distinction of level of ESXi host is the power of horse and the I/O bandwidth (storage and networks VM will be used will be the same). It dawned on me that the distributed switch is configured with a particular number of uplinks. I'm trying to picture how this will work in this situation? I thought that I create a vSwitch distributed with 4 uplinks and finish by only using 2 of these uplinks when adding a small amount of work ESXi host to it. This is a valid configuration. Should I disable or do something special with the uplinks unused? I have not met this configuration so I wanted some tips on the correct configuration.

I have validated this configuration as described previously. A dVS with 4 uplinks can take care of the guests with "up to" 4 interfaces. Hosts with only 2 interfaces will have 2 of the 4 links rising dVS associated with natachasery while the other 2 will remain unused. In my case, I decided to use the uplink 1 and 2. Uplinks 3 and 4 are not used with these hosts.

  • Consulta mejor opcion para configurar networking "virtual Switch".

Hola todos espero esten very well...

Partamos respond as las best no son solo eso practices, good practices there no estan en piedra, por cada uno debe set so what requested una best practice in particular to asil o has nuestro stage o an our needs.

Dejando en esto claro, you have several options, partiendo por the config as you currently have there than in any caso esta mala.

Según lo than tiendo tienes 2 vSwitch, uno para servidores office y otro para escritorios office, con cada vSwitch a number x of physical NICS.  Esta config you permite urban el trafico ambos types for office, asegurando además cierto nivel redundancia the conexion en Máquinas.

Otra opcion, works that you are using VLAN, you have a vSwitch solo con todas las NIC that usan los 2 vSwitch configurados currently.  In unico vSwitch puedes crear este 2 exchanges, cada uno con una VLAN para urban el trafico las maquinas office, para lo cual las NIC physical deben estar his in modo los fisicos, pasando both switches trunk VLAN.  Esta config you permite una mayor red redundancia marine y ancho Mayor of banda, use todas las are for VLAN cada that could cards available for en el vSwitch network.

Both options igual son of validas y lo you depende Niños y como are the Red architecture of you plataforma.

  • How to restore a distributed virtual switch.

    Hello

I have a question where one of my esx host 4 i crashed and then we rebuild the host vmware and I have the backup of the file esx.conf with me since the day before. I had a virtual switch distributed in the vmware environment, and since I rebooted the backup config that my vcenter does not add the host esx to the distributed virtual switch.

-How to restore the vswitch distributed on the esxi host settings.

-When I look on the esxi configuration host configuration file indicates that DVS information are uploaded but vcenter does not overwrite the new settings.

    troubleshooting performed up to now

I restarted the vcenter and all services and same problem.

forced file configuration several times and same question

has taken the esx host that out of the inventory and the same issue.

    any other suggestions.

The answer to this has been found in Vcenter 5.1 where there is an option to save the DV switch. I connected this bug a few years back with vmware and this problem is fixed in vcenter 5.1.

  • Network management - only the virtual switch

I installed latest ESXi 4 Update 1, which is available. I m running Active Directory LAB on several virtual servers Windows 2008 R2 and one of them acts as a router with RRAS role. I m creating 3 different subnets and one of them must be only virtual - no material connection NIC in the interface of ESXi´s it seems that I can't do this, while creating the new switch virtual it forces me to select NIC it becomes a problem, because if I use a virtual switch for Windows 2008 router has the physical NETWORK map It will come to mean that the cable is disconnected. And I need a virtual connection between virtual servers only, that they will be the single subnet between them and communication to physical clients will go through this router´s of Windows 2008 NIC that is not supposed to be physical.

How can I archive with ESXi?

You can create a vSwitch without attached Teddy.

Do not select any NIC, or delete them after the creation of the vSwitch.

  • How can I assign some VLAN in Virtual switch?

I have ESX 4.0 installed on two IBM Blade hosts that are in a HA cluster to enable vMotion.  I have a virtual switch created on each host.  Virtual machine connect to the same switch.  I added a new virtual machine to on one VLAN separated.  I have a few "How to"... questions:

    2. can I put several VLANS on the whole virtual switch? (If Yes, what is the snytax? "43; 40 "or"43, 40' or "43-40")

    3. What is the best practice for this kind of Setup?

    Thank you

    Stuart

Hello and welcome to the forums.

    1. How can I put the new virtual machine in an assignment of VLAN different from other virtual machines?  (I think it's through groups of ports but I always read)

Port groups - you're right.  Create a port group, and then assign the virtual machine this connection.

    2. can I put several VLANS on the whole virtual switch? (If Yes, what is the snytax? "43; 40 "or"43, 40' or "43-40")

Yes, you want to create a new port group for each VIRTUAL LAN required in the vSwitch.

    3. What is the best practice for this kind of Setup?

There is a lot of information around this in the Guide de Configuration ESX.

    Good luck!

  • Migrate a virtual switch

We are in the middle of moving VMS to ESX 3.5 data center to a new datacenter in vSphere Enterprise. In the center of ESX 3.5, I have a big test environment where I have reproduced most of our WAN using virtual switches, Linux based Wanem routers to simulate our Active Directory structure, including domain controllers, servers, and the numerous jobs for each of our 26 sites.

There is a large number of virtual switches to recreate on each host. We do not have Enterprise Plus, so we cannot use the configuration of the central switch.

Is there another method (script or other) who can re-create or migrate these switches from 3.5 to 4.0 without manually creating days?

Are you referring to the evolution of the virtual machines network portgroup of one to the other and in your case potentially issue on to another vSwitch? If so, take a look at this script: updateVMPortgroup.pl everything you do really makes a call to ReconfigVM_Task() and passing in a specification change and put to day the network in which you want to change

  • How to set up the virtual switch vmnet0 so in fact, it behaves like a switch.

    Hello

    I have a problem:

    My configuration is:

host of CentOS 5.3 using vmware server 1.06

3 clients (all centos 5.3 with vmware tools) installed

    web01

    DB01

    backup01

The three guests have public ip and use the bridged (vmnet0) network

The backup01 backups web01 and db01 every night.

My supplier can see that traffic on its poort switch that connects the host to the internet, and he wants to charge me for it.

The three guests (and host) are all on the same subnet. It is the local subnet traffic that does not use a gateway.

It seems the traffic between hosts is diffuse on my physical eth0 on the host. When I have some files between guests, it also appears on the page from my supplier of PCs followed AY. (Just likecommunication between 2 physical host computers are on the local network when you use a hub instead of a switch)

I thought it was probably the only way to vmware would work when using network bridges. Because the host doesn't know anyting on the clients ip numbers.

But when googleling abot this I found several docuemtents (for vmware server 2) telling me that vmnet0 is actually a sort of virtual switch.

If this is true this virtualswitch should know other mac adressess clients (arp who a..) and she must stop the internal traffic to leave the material.

Is not what is happinging. It looks more like a virtualhub instead of virtual switch.

So I was wondering if there are ways to configure the vmnet0 somehow. I was hot, but I can't find anything about it.

I don't want to change the bridged mode or coz internal use of the intellectual property of the plan is to spit the separate web01 and db01 to vmware guests in the furture.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

My idea was to put an additional physical switch between me and my switch to suppliers, but that seems to be a ridiculous solution.

    Any help is welcome.

    Concerning

    Hans Groot

VMserver don't use virtual switches: it uses virtual hubs. They are mislabeled - probably because "virtual switch" sounds more sexy than "virtual hub".

You can't change their behavior to be more like a switch

You need to split the file into segments that will be adapted on the disks you are using.

Windows has no characteristic that will do this for you. You can get a BluRay drive and disc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc, when you should be able to fit on a single disk file.

Any plans to support vDS on the embedded host customer?

If the distributed virtual switches are supported, I can't find how to set up their own good that I was able to configure virtual Standard switches.

I haven't used client embedded myself yet, but in order to create or configure the vDS, you need to vCenter server you manage using vSphere Client/vSphere Web Client. vSS are by the host-based virtual switches that can be created and managed at the host level, so you can create those who use client Embedded or stand-alone vSphere client.

  • Mix the virtual switch different type in a Cluster and a data center.

Can I mix standard virtual switch and a virtual switch distributed in different hosts to a Cluster/DataCenter? Can I vMotion virtual machine to a host of switch distributed to a host of standard switch and vice versa? Let's assume that the hosts have the same port group name (but have virtual swaitch different type), in the same data center, and have the same subnet IP vMotion.

You can mix standard switches and distributed, that's what we call hybrid architecture... but to be able to migrate virtual machines between virtual switches, you must the vSphere 6 and again there are some limitations, like not be able to migrate from VDS vs.
