Adding tools from VMware to Virtual Appliances

I have virtual appliances in my environment of different suppliers.  They are mainly the devices of SUSE Linux vendors such as backup software or control solutions provided .ovf format.  Some of them do not come with VMware tools.  When a seller of customizes a Linux OS to make a .ovf model, but does not add the VMware tools, are there situations where I should not try to install VMware tools?  It is normally safe to try to install the tools?

Hello

as usual, the installation of vmware in a virtual appliance tools is recommended.

Check the "virtual machine configuration" section of this PDF on virtual appliances best practices:

When you perform these upgrades, there are things to be aware of that are not visible or in any documentation for VMware, I saw. I created an overview during my upgrade, so I thought I'd post it here.

Thanks for the information, write well.

I would like to add to the list of traps - my point of view is on one side of Windows.

    1. If you use VUM updgrade tools or hardware, check that the client is configured to support suspended snapshots

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1007696

    2. If VUM can upgrade tools, but not the material, turn off comments, and then try to upgrade the hardware of the v4 to v7

    3. the upgrade VUM method seems to work well if you have a single network adapter.  We had trouble with several NETWORK cards and NETWORK load balancing.  Due to the hand reconfiugre.

4 NETWORK GHOST who are left cards account contain their original network configuration.  This can be useful to check the configuration of the new interface.  NETSH to view the configurations on GHOST interfaces.

netsh interface ip show config "Interface name".

    5. in regard to the lost NETWORK GHOST cards, and WINS settings I wrote a script to help.  The script is a batch file and use devcon;

The script is provided as-is.  Use at your own risk.

  • Upgrade VMware Tools on Linux based virtual appliances

I just updated a cluster of 5.1 to 5.5, some of the VMS are virtual appliances based on Linux (most of them on CentOS) which are fairly locked down (no easy access console) critical how's this for upgrade these types of virtual machines to the latest version of VMware Tools? I'm a little OCD and it bothers me that some of the VMS are VMware Tools reports that are "Stale" :-)

    Thank you.

I know what you mean about the annoying notification bit... However, most of the providers WILL group and test vmtools as well as the Virtual Appliance that they release.

The answer isn't vmtools upgrade, it has upgraded the Virtual Appliances.

  • XP Service Pack 3 VDI model - deployment use and Windows XP Service Pack 2 deployment tools?  VMWare View, virtual center of customization specification Manager.

I'm setting up a VMWare View deployment and I need to configure Performance Manager in Virtual Center Customization Tools.  Use the deployment tools XP Service Pack 2 for my model pack 3 XP service or do I have to download SP 3 tools?  Documentation on the internet points to SP 2 tools, but I can't find a definitive answer for XP SP 3 machines.

  • Move the VM from VMWare workstation 7.1 for ESX 4

I have a virtual machine created in VMWare workstation 7.1 (Machine virtual Version 7) and have copied to the data store on a host ESX 4 Update 1

I don't know why I still need to re - import the virtual machine with vmkfstools-i source/destination before it will boot as ESX 4U1...

Can someone shed some light on this?

    Hello

Have you tried using the Workstation 7 export feature?

By using this feature, you can create a consistent ESX VM or a virtual appliance which you would then be able to reload on your ESX.

In VMware Workstation, click file-> import / export

For the Source, you must select the Type of source: 'others '.

then, you look up your VM's vmx file.

Once in the destination Type, select VM Infrastructure VMware or Virtual appliance.

If you select VMware Infrastructure, it will ask you your server address VCenter or ESX + credentials and it will load it automatically.

If you select Virtual appliance, you will be able to create an OVA or file OVF that you can use to create a new virtual machine based on this device in VClient.

mapping (89-> 'other') which is in question.

In its final form ratified (FVO 1.0.0), ovf:id is supposed to be a literal mapping to the data in the CIM schema (CIM_OperatingSystem.mof: OSType: ValueMap *), where "89" is a distribution (Mandriva) Linux 32-bit versions of CIM schema where it is present (2.19.1 CIM schema 2.20.1, 2.21.0 and 2.22.0 experimental as examples). Red Hat Enterprise Linux x86_64 should be ovf:id 80 for a FVO 1.0.0 consistent descriptor.

The valid values for ovf:id are defined by the ValueMap qualifier in the CIM_OperatingSystem.OsType property.

OperatingSystemSection is a valid section for a VirtualSystem entity only.

HOWEVER... we don't talk about the OVF 0.9 (implementation of the VMware project).

The FVO management for VC 2.5 0.9 code was written prior to the ratification of the 2.19.1 CIM schema, and the OS Type mapping data are maintained as a set of private tables, where "89" is in fact mapped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (3,4,5) x86_64 variants. For vSphere 4 (rewrite of this feature), data of the private table for OVF 0.9 has been preserved.

Somewhere along the line, '89' becomes 'other' rather than '-64' or ' otherlinux-64' or ' rhel5-64' (ordered under most preferred).»»»

  • Ovftool from VMware is not install/work on VMware vMA 4.0?

Tried to install 64-bit ovftool on VMware vMA 4.0 today and he could not install or give any useful information:

    Checksum validation failed for archive.
(If you use FTP, make sure to set it to binary mode)

As far as I know, the binary is actually included in the installation script, but I'm not sure why "FTP" is referenced here unless VMware is expected to download the actual source? I hope that, as the vMA is a VMware virtual appliance that it should support utilities "VMwae", but from what I've seen in the past with VDDK and VIX, is not always and not is generally not the case.

Can someone comment or know how to install?

    Thanks for your time

  • Virtual appliance for Veeam

If I use the free version of Veeam backup mV, I don't want to use a Windows license to install Veeam.  Is there such a thing as Veeam backup virtual appliance that runs the veeam backup software without requiring a Windows operating system?  If this is not the case, this is intended to be released at a later date?

At the moment only Windows Version exists.

Backup free edition is the same basis as the paid versions of code. So, it benefits from the software main cycles of quick and immediate release supports new VMware and Hyper-V Versions.

Yes, the device is very easy to deploy, but to me a problem of security in an organization. You are at the mercy of sellers (security) update deployment.

I think that the idea of the Windows Version is so easy to use (everyone knows Windows) and can be integrated in your existing patch, antivirus and monitoring environment.

If Veeam will add the unit or support for Linux I think it will double/tribble close R & D and quality control effort and will slow down the publication cycle.

I m not Veeam management product, but I think that you won't see backup free edition in the form of appliance in the next time.

On MS Outlook license, you can use Backup free Edition also on a workstation OS (XP-8: 1) on a PC/computer/laptop virtual. But for VMware vSphere 5.5 support you need a 64 bit OS.

    Best reagards... Andy

Edit1: You can add a feature on http://forums.veeam.com request. Veeam product management is very active in the Forums of Veeam and the Forum will have an influence on the priority list.

  • VMWare vCenter Server Appliance / 2012R2 Windows domain

    Hi all
I've recently updated my domaincontrollers to R2 2012 WIndows, and I installed vCenter on a vm through the ovf appliance. After you have configured the vCenter in the web gui, I can join the domain successfully and the virtual center appears in the field. After a restart of the virtualcenter, I'm not able to find the field in the client to vcenter under permissions. (version vCenter: VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.5.0.5101-1398493)

Someone at - it a tip on how to fix this?

You must login to webclient using [email protected] and navigate to the SSO configuration. Select your ad that you added and make this default domain. This makes the announcement should appear in the menu drop-down.

What is causing the 2 drives fills up so quickly? And how we can solve.

    2.png1.png

Just a bit of background here...

In your case, if you have a 7.8 GB of files in pg_xlog, this means that there is something like 480 WAL files saved in it. There may be more of (3 * checkpoint_segments + 1) files in pg_xlog (or 901 knowing that checkpoint_segments has a maximum of 300). Note that this is a soft limit and can be exceeded, but the WAL files will be deleted when this soft threshold is reached. Below this limit, when the WAL files are not needed, they are recycled by the system be renamed.

VMware vFabric Postgres 9.2 differs also, a little Vanilla because it uses an algorithm called dynamic control point which allows to delay or speed up the time of a control point is kicked according to the workload of the server is facing, this is slightly different from vanilla Postgres... In this case the control point is controlled with checkpoint_segments_max and there may be more of (checkpoint_segments_max * 3) + 1 WAL files.

More reference on the number of WAL files to vanilla 9.2 here:

    PostgreSQL: Documentation: 9.2: Configuration WAL

    So, to answer your questions:

    > So is there no way to manually clean up the files on the data disk?

You should not remove files your server WAL because this would result in a corrupt system, you might need those WAL files in the case of a server crash for redo operations. So rely on the system for their elimination.

You could accelerate that by kicking CHECKPOINT manually, just be aware that this operation is very expensive in terms of input/output. You can thus reduce checkpoint_segments_max manually in postgresql.conf, which by default is 300.

    > Are they just continue to grow like this for always?

No unnecessary WAL files are recycled or eliminated by the system.

    > Why are there so many files for such a small base?

These files are required to roll FORWARD operations. As far as I can see on your screen, all WAL files have the same timestamp, so don't you have an operation that could generate a lot of WAL, as for example that would make a huge bulk loading of the INSERT? That would explain why you have generated a lot of files without a checkpoint being hit by checkpoint_timeout.

  • Regarding the hosts took max supported on Vcenter Virtual Appliance 5.0

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vsphere5/R50/vSphere-50-configuration-maximums.PDF

Maximum config guide indicates that vsphere 5.0 supports the hosts of 1000 per VC. The same applies to the virtual appliance thus (on an external Oracle DB... not the one internal)

    Concerning

    Girish

The same should apply to the device when you use an external database. But with several guests it would be wise to take the same settings with the Windows version of vCenter, which means increase the memory of tomcat and adding vCPUs additional and resources of the virtual machine RAM.

  • How to start a Virtual Appliance of in vSphere Client

Have the vSphere client connected to the server VCenter, with two hosts.

Everything works fine - VMs can be created, moved, everything.

I would like to make a new virtual machine from a Virtual Appliance.

I have already downloaded (Ubuntu 10.4 Server VA) and uncompressed it.

All the files are there ready to use, on the same computer that is running the vSphere Client.

Don't know how to use the AV.  I can start going in VMware Player, but it's not my goal.

You want to set up/start them in vSphere Client, and then migrate the GOES from one host to another.

    Thank you.

Since the files listed, it looks like a picture of work/drive station. What you can do is to use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone to convert the virtual machine to your ESXi host.
