Backup Exec 12.5, ESX 4.0, SBS 2008

Hi all

This is probably a discussion experienced; so apologies if this is the case.

I installed ESX 4.0 on a Dell T710 recently.

On that note, I installed SBS 2008 as a guest.

The Dell server has an internal LTO 4 tape drive; who can see the prompt.

But Backup Exec 12.5 can't seem to write the date on the tape. It fails every time.

It generates the following error: "an invalid command was sent to the storage device ' "

It is apparently a known issue. VMware does not support such a together until I think. So is Symantec.

What are my options?

Thank you

CT

If you are looking for a solution that can work, first try to use a SCSI device.

Add the SCSI ID of the tape of the virtual machine.

If it doesn't, try again with VMDirectPath:

  • Support ESXi 5.0 host FC connected tape drives in the virtual machine running symantec backup exec 2012

    Dear Experts,

We recently purchased C0H19A: StoreEver HP 1/8 G2 6 - LTO Ultrium 6250 CF TapeAutoloader. The purpose is to backup of VMS data, I mean selected data in virtual machines, as for the exchange of data bases email for server accounts database SQL server etc.. We have a full VM backup plan, so using symantec backup exec software.

    We have this configuration:

-TWO DL 380 Gen8 servers (running UPDATE2 Esxi 5.0), both servers have not all SCSI ports

-One SINGLE HP P2000 G2 MSA FC Dual Cntrl storage

-TWO HP SN6000 12 - pt Windows Pwr FC switch

    -HP ADF

All them above are related to the CF. Symantec backup exec 2012 is also installed on Windows 2008 R2, which is a virtual machine.

But now, we are unable to see the tape library autoloader through the virtualization layer in the device of machine Manager virtual backup exec. Reading on internet, I also found some details that connected FC tape drives are not supported by the Esxi hosts. We are really stuck in this situation, all the solutions to this. I also read the article from vmware saying configuration for Esxi 4.0 FC tape drives and later versions

Installation of a physical server windows with Backup Exec 2012 and HBA and connected to above switches FC is the only way to see the ADF? Even after reading articles on the internet, I'm not clear, please guide what solution I have now to get this thing going, I really need to find solution to this.

    Waiting for answers.

    Kind regards

Hello, I'm a Backup Exec support engineer and yes the method supported is only by connecting the tape drive to a server of physical media. • Backup Exec 2010 VADP

Currently, we use Windows Backup Exec 2010 agents to back up data on 10 VM as their SATA option was very slow.

I'm looking to move to the use of transport SAN with VADP, but need some assurance on the set-up process. We have two ESX hosts connected via iSCSI to an IBM DS3300 SAN. As I understand it, I have to add the Backup Exec Windows Server to the host group that our ESX host. It is the only way to present LUNS to the server BE, to my knowledge.

Of course, there is the fear of Automount with Windows Server. I used DISKPART automount disable and scrub, but I hesitate again to add the server to the host BE documentation on the process group does not exist and their support will not confirm anything. IBM storage medium does not recommend adding a Windows Server for the host group, controlled by the ESX hosts.

I forgot something, or do I have to go against the recommendation of IBM?

I hope you are using R2 BE2010 if is not upgraded as soon as POSSIBLE.  Backup agent present Vmware in BE 2010 R2 has been updated to correct defects in present in the previous version of the software. Since you have already disabled automount san must present LUNS to the host.

Add the BE Server to the host group that owns VMFS volumes you want to back up

  • Backup Exec Meida server as a VM guest

We had some hardware problems with our current 12.5 Exec from running on a Dell 4400 Server backup.   So we thought we would give him a try to P2V a Dell 2600 ESX 3.5 server.

Tape drive - tape Exabyte VXA-3 SCSI drive

Host controller - Adaptec SCSI Ultra 160 29160 controller

During the test backup very frist after p2v conversion and the shift of the SCSI controller card backup performance was terrible.  About 100 MB per minute.

I had feared this and thought I would just need to return to a self-sustaining media dedicated server.

However, the next backup performance and for the following week was about 600 MB / / minute.  It was even better that the old physical Dell 4400 server we had.

Then all of a sudden about a week later backup now back back about 100 MB speeds / / min.     A job that used to take about 38 minutes to run now takes 4 hours.

If it is not possible to have a server of media as a guest to talk to the SCSI card in the host ESX 3.5 then so be it.  But it has worked for more than a week, then stopped.

The only thing that has changed is that I added a virtual disk of 300 GB for Backup Exec Server 2003 32 bit sp2 media server.   So that I could make this record to the file backups.   Given that this speed does not exceed 100 MB / per minute.

My backups of backups from disk to disk file are around 600 MB speed.   It tells me that the neck of the bottle is not in the network, but in the more likely tape drive SCSI communications.

I'm back up the server of current reviews as well as other guests as well as other physical servers.

All the ideas from the community would be greatly appreciated.

If I just need a cavity on the idea and go back to only a dedicated physical server I can do the same.

    Thank you.

    Randy

Just to clarify. You just use a single SCSI HBA for a local disk and the tape drive? How many SCSI controllers are in this host at all? Passthrough or paravirtual controllers?

Close to real world throughput is possible. I am using a media server in a virtual machine and it works pretty well. The SCSI controller dedicated to the tape library is presented paravirtualized for the virtual machine. Flow 4 GB per minute constantly (real world of max. 5 GB/min.). A passthrough controller would make probably even much better.

But there are some differences between your config and mine. I use a library of tapes LTO4 and paravirtualized dedicated HBA. I read of fiber channel THAT SAN LUNS presented as RDM. And finally and most importantly, my vm is not migrated. It was installed virtual from scratch with only the required drivers.

    Just some thoughts.

  • Backup Exec on a virtual computer... I dared?

    Hi all

I think strongly about moving Symantec Backup Exec on a virtual computer.  Before I do, I was wondering if anyone has the words of wisdom.   With the material that I have, I will be forced to join the SCSI

cable for the ESX Server backup & hope I can communicate

in this way.  Don't believe not that if anyone here knows if I need some special software/drivers to make sure that everything plays nice?

    What I have:

    • Backup Exec 12.5

    • Tape drive Quantum PX502

    • ESX 3.5

    Feedbackup welcomed.

I have a 2008 VM Windows BE12.5.  Origianally host was ESX3.5, but I continued to get PSODs every time the drive was accessed.  Tape drive is an HP 920 LTO3 autoloader.  SCSI card has been a a HP card LSI brand, but is not compatible with the new server hardware that we would go to anyway, so we tried an Adaptec 39160 (spare part one of our previous tape drive) and ESX does not PSODs, but the 920 drive disliked the SCSI card.  (The 920 can't slow down correctly to Ultra160.)  We have replaced the 39160 with a 29320LPE (we didn't need to double the 39xxx channel and EPA because we had to PCIe connectors) and he CMTF.  29320ALS is on the list of compatibility ESX4, but not the EPL.  ALS is a RAID card that is not recommended for tape drives, but we crossed our fingers.  We have upgraded the ESX3.5 to ESXi4 server and all is well now.  SCSI tape drives seem to be hit or miss.

I noticed that the page Web PX502 says that he supports iSCSi.  This can be a good option for you, if your current SCSI (or whatever HBA) is not compatible with ESX.  We have a Quantum DXi3500 VTL connected via iSCSI to the same Windows VM using Windows iSCSI initiator '.   No problems with ESX compatiibility, as it is Windows communicates directly on the LAN to the Quantum.  We had to dedicate a gigabit NIC for iSCSI communication.  But we can get around 1000 MB/min to 350 MB/min vs Quantum LTO3 iSCSI should be fast enough to a physical tape drive.  The Quantum VTL and iSCSI have been quite reliable and was allowed me the time to get the physical tape drive problems brought.

  • VCB & backup exec 12.5 w / vmware option - list of disks in disk management

    Hello

I have an EMC SAN (CX3-20 and CX4-120) and I welcomed a LUN to be shared between in the backup server.  Backup server has VCB, backup exec 12.5

    This is a normal behavior?

1 - when I click on disk management in the computer management and then the LUNS which I shared appears as a partition 'unknown '.

    2. when I right click it now allows me to delete.  When I remove, it basically caused me a lot of problems on my esx environment.

    My other question is:

Is it away so that I can still share this LUN so that my Backup Exec + VCB can always make backups, but this lun are not not in computer management? I'm just afraid something would go wrong and the LUNS can be accidentally deleted (which will create the biggest problem for me in my production environment)

    Please find attached the screenshot.

  • Backup Exec 12.5 and VCB - support requirements and agent

I noticed there is now an agent, which you can purchase from Symantec that allows you to save as many guests on the particular host windows as you want without any agent (though law enforcement officers are still required).

    http://eval.Symantec.com/mktginfo/Enterprise/other_resources/b-solution_brief-bews12.5_agent_vmware_virtual_infrastructure_09-2008.en-us.PDF

My question is this - from what I can find on the web, ESX 3.5 U3 does not support the latest integration modules Backup Exec (pre and post backup scripts etc.). So based on this, using Backup Exec 12.5 with VCB Symantec agent is needed giving you the GUI (no longer need to customize scripts for VM backups).

    Can someone please clarify this?

The Agent gives you a GUI with VCB integration. You should always install VCB, just not the integration kit. You can always do it the "old school" way. The modules BE did never seem to work 100% anyway and you can the House push something pre and post if you do not want to pay for the agent.

I think that VMware just stopped creating integration because the older kits kits are relatively stable. I tested with esx3.5u3/vc2.5u4 and have no problem. There is no update for VCB, so there is no update for the kits.

I know that you have done this before, then you probably haven't this info, but I just posted a guide on the VI:OPS on VCB as a generic facility backup->http://viops.vmware.com/home/docs/DOC-1392

  • Backup Exec and VCB proxy server configuration

    Hello

I am installing Backup Exec to back up my virtual machine on an ESX Server, but I get the following error:

    *Backup- VMVCB::ESX01VCGuestVm(DC)ha-datacenter(DC)vmserver03*

V-79-57344-38220 - Backup of the virtual machine 'server03' failed. VMware VCB framework reported the following error

Error: Failed to open the disk: Cannot access a SAN/iSCSI LUN backing this virtual disk. (Hint: Option "-m ndb" swtiches vcbMounter to network base disk access if this is what you want.)

It's my setup. I have an ESX Server connected to a San. I store my images on the SAN. I have Backup Exec installed on our file server that is also attached to the SAN and try to use this server as my VCB proxy server. I have installed on my server BE VCB framework and the enterprise Converter 3.03. I have setup a temporary staging that the server can access to place its snapshots on.

My BE\VCB proxy server cannot access the SAN LUN that holds the images. My understanding of the process is that of BE I navigate on the ESX Server and select the virtual machine, I want to backup, and because the ESX Server can access the SAN LUNS where VM images are stored throughout the process of alignment of the image and place in the temporary storage area so that BE can then throw tape should work.

Can someone help to solve my problem?

    See you soon

Yes, it is the intention of the VCB.  Take the resources needed to run the backup out of the host and on the VCB proxy server.  You can define VCB to use the 'LAN' mode which backs the service console of the virtual computer on the network, but it is slower and puts more pressure on the host.

Make sure you carefully follow the VCB document.  There are some things you need to do on the proxy before presenting the LUN as cutting diskpart automount. If you don't there is a chance that the lun might get corrupted and your VM would go bye-bye.

  • For Symantec Backup Exec backup scripts

    Hello

Does anyone know how to change the module of integration of Backup Exec for monolithic backups.  It's create sparse backups at this moment and identification is somewhat more complicated.

Good instructions on how to restore the backup of the file partially allocated to another ESX host would be useful.

    Thank you very much

DOH!  Sorry, I gave you the location for VCB 1.1, it changed to 1.5. It should be added to the following:

    function AttachVMData(VMinfo, vmMoRef, createSnapshot, deleteSnapshot)
