• Computer "not responding" when I connect the external hard drive.

  Hi all

  When I connect my external hard drive to my laptop, it is detected and the icon for the material appears in the taskbar background. But when I go to my computer, it happens that does not. I can always open other programs etc that are not related to the hard drive, but nothing to do with the hard drive "fails". As soon as I plug it on, the laptop starts responding again.   I had some movies I wanted to copy in one of my sharing folders, so I tied a drive hard usb at the back of my camera, but the nas don't seem to notice.   Usually start up to a blank screen without the Apple Logo, may report one of the following:

  • Hardware failure
  • Boot drive is not recognized as valid and updated updated
  • OS X essential software is missing, hurt moved or renamed or corrupt

  No matter who, in order to boot from an external drive "bootable", you would normally hold down the Option key until you get a screen that offers a number of devices to try to boot from.

  Alternatively, you can try holding down the C key to try to boot from the external drive.

  Since you have a Mac pre-2013, if you hold down the D key while booting, the built-in Apple Hardware Test should start up.  This can help to identify hardware problems.

  I suggest you to assign a drive letter for the external hard drive and see if it helps.

  To do:

  a. press the Windows key + R and type diskmgmt.msc.

  (b) if the hard drive recognized in disk management and if there is no drive letter assigned, I suggest you do a right click on the drive and assign a drive letter and check if it helps.

  c. right click paths and the drive letter Change.

  Do one of the following:

  ·         To assign a drive letter if it has not already received, click Add, click the letter you want to use and then click onOK.

  ·         To change a drive letter, click change, click on assign the following drive letter, click the letter you want to use and then click on OK.

  d. restart the computer and check.

  How is formatted the external hard drive? Is the file system on the drive Mac OS extended (journaled) or other system files?  Is the drive directly connected by USB or similar, or is it a SIN?
