  • Box "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is grayed out out__cant change file association for any type of file

I'm not allowed to change any combination of files for any type of file... If I try to associate a file type with a program that I can't the box is grayed out to always open the file with this program, for example, if I try to open .py (programming in python language file) with python from another program whenever I have to right click and open with python, but if I want to choose the "always use". the selected program to open this type of file"is grayed on I can not change it... pls help

    Hi VikkHckrz,

    1. you remember to make changes to the computer recently?

    Method 1:

You can consult the following KB article and run the fix it tool available and check if you can assign file association.

When you run an .exe on a Windows Vista-based or Windows 7 computer file, the file may start another program

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/950505

    Also check out the link:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/change-which-programs-Windows-uses-by-default

After running the fixit so check the option is grayed out or not.

    Method 2:

If you're still having problems, then you can try to change the settings in the registry only if it is present on your computer and check if it helps.

    a. Click Start, type regedit in the search box and press ENTER.

    b. navigate to the

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer

    (c) in the right side of the screen, double click on "NoFileAssociate".

    d. change the value of "NoFileAssociate" from 1 to 0.

    e. exit the registry editor and restart the computer and check.

Important: The above mentioned steps show you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, follow the steps from the link below:

DO NOT change the extension of a file type, because you will never be able to open this file. To save an attachment, click on file, save attachments. At the bottom of the window that opens is the place where this file is saved. You can change this location by clicking the Browse button. Once the attachment is saved, for example, in the Documents folder, navigate to that folder and double-click on this MAP. To open PPS files, you must have PowerPoint or the free PowerPoint Viewer installed. If you do not, go here:

  • File associations for Contribute 3?

I know that Contribute can import content from a variety of Office formats directly, but there a "native" format he ' owns '? I know that the user can add new extensions to file for registration, but how different extensions Contribute comes it configured to use?

During the installation process, what file extensions is the program wants to be the default application?

    Thank you.

Contribute does not take possession of the web extensions and does not have a native file extension. It uses no connection keys that use the extension .stc. Default Contribute already knows he'll be editing .html files - if you need your files to be changed with another program like Dreamweaver, you change the default value of the editor via Edit > preferences > file editors > source Web page and then choose Dreamweaver or in Notepad.

    Hi MarcSatz,

-Did you change on your computer before this problem?

This problem occurs when one or more of the following conditions are met:
    • The registry values that are associated with the file name extension are corrupted or missing values.
    • The computer is infected with a virus.

Here is an article that will guide you in the process of fixing the issue:

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. Cannot open files with extensions such as.exe, .com, and.lnk on a Windows XP-based computer

  • You cannot change the file association for .exe owner program

Just bought new Win 7 Dell desktop running Home premium OS from an old XP computer file transfer.  I am a developer of s/w using a proprietary application that compiles the files of .xpa.  Using 'open with' when I try to associate the file .xpa at our request, it does not.  Instead:

    1. the request does not appear in the list of programs to associate even if it has an .exe file extension

    2. when I click on the .xpa file that I want to associate with the application, it is to be associated with a Windows Media file

    Don't know what to do.

  • accidentally changed my file association for utorrent and now not loading the game and programs and browsers

I accidentally changed something in my computer that shuts down my computer to open all the files, I can't even open the Microsoft Fit it online because when I go to install it, I get a pop up window asking me what program I want to run with, but none of the programs offered in the window will work to open the program file. I remember a couple of days ago I have has download a torrent file and one open pop-up window and asked me what program I wanted to associate this file type, I clicked on the option of utorrent, now none of my games, movies or programs run, when I click on them and try to open them I get the same pop-up box asking what application I want to use to open the program with.
am beyond frustration with this, I even uninstalled my UTorrent program hoping that would solve the problem, but no luck, the game/files/movies and browsers does not start without changing the file to open with something that is not available in the list of the programs listed.,.

I would be really grateful for the help in reassociating my files for the games will be automatically start as before.

    Hello
What happens, when you try to open any program?
I suggest you try the following methods.

  • All my shortcuts go to the same program and they all have the extension .lnk.

When I look at the table of file extensions, I see a prticular program indicated, and this program is the program that starts when I click any shortcut.  I see no way to change this so that when I click on Internet Explorer, for example, Internet Explorer sometimes instead of the wrong program.

    Hi Mensard1,

I had the same problem. I solved it by downloading http://www.creativelement.com/powertools/ and then running the program (from the directory, because none of my shortcuts working) "file Type doctor." When I chose ".lnk" in the list of extensions, he said in the Actions in the right click Menu:
"(ignorer le choix utilisateur) ' in red and"
    "Open".
I then removed the "(utilisateur choix override) ' and that's it." All shortcuts worked once again, just as they did.
    Good luck
