Cannot retrieve Portege R100

I have some problems with my Portege R100. The HARD drive has been damaged so I bought another, it is already formatted.
I have also two CD-readers:
1 Toshiba PX1055E-1NST PCMCIA card reader
2 key USB Toshiba PA3352U - 1 CD 2

My problem is that the doesn´t of recovery works! I'll explain just what is the problem:

I boot from the Flash DRIVE with the recovery disk 1 on the inside. My computer laptop replys with:
"Windows 98 Startup
Microsoft RAMDrive version 3.06 virtual disk D:
Disc size: 16 384 k
Sector size: 512 bytes
The allocation unit: 16 sectors
Directory entries: 64 "

After that, the screen tells me
"Driver for external PC for Rev ATAPI IDE drives card: 2204.

then:
"ERROR: there is no PCCARD in socket A and B!

PCCARD not initialized! »

After some time:
"ATAPI-CD: CD-ROM ATAPI IDE drive driver.
ATAPI-CD: Copyright (C) Freecom Technologies 1995-2001.

After that, in big letters:
"NO CD/NET.
a: ".

If I type "dir", then it displays the list of files. I think it means that the CD-Rom is at work, isn´t it?
I ve tried a lot of things to get my laptop to work, but nothing seems to help. A person of this discussion forum explained using a normal CD - USB drive to start with.

I tried different disks and normal versions of Windows XP. Without success!
What's wrong?
I m not an expert computer as you can probably, and if someone can help me, please try to expain to a person who is a beginner to computer in this case.

made with a lot of problems!

    Hello.

I guess you need a companion disc as described here

You must boot from this floppy disk to load the driver for CD/DVD drive.

    Someone has an idea?

Thank you very much in advance.

    Hello

The preferred resolution is not available on the external screen because the display driver that is installed on the laptop does not support!
The external monitor is able to manage the 1280 x 1024, but if this resolution is not listed in the display driver, then you will not be able to choose!

Try to remove the USB entries in Device Manager, and then restart the device. The ports should be recognized and installed correctly. In my view, it cannot happen without any reason. It will be interesting to know since when this problem started.

    Hello

Unfortunately have no proper explanation, but I guess that WLAN cannot be connected so fast that LAN and it may be the reason why the first logon fails. In my opinion it has nothing to do with the functionality of the device and this is just a feature of network.

Maybe some WLAN expert can give you a good explanation.

    Hello

I have a Toshiba Portege R100 of America with 768 MB of RAM, 40 GB HDD, DVD-ROM on the PCMCIA card. I want to renew the Windows XP Pro Notebook by updating the material.

-How can I update a larger HARD drive?
    -What RAM should I update?
    -Can I upgrade the processor?

    Thank you for your help.

    holger112

    Hello

    You cannot switch the processor!

You can upgrade the HD, but because it is an interface 1.8 "HD with an ide (50 pin ATA) the best you can find is a 60 GB HD (Toshiba MK6006GAH 60 GB) you can find them on ebay for a reasonable price

You can easily switch from memory with a module 1 GB pc2700-dimm ddr1 (like kingston or corsair) in replacement of the module of 512 MB to a maximum of 1.2 GB.

    You can buy them everywhere

    Also note:

install XP on a R100 is not very easy, but you can find lots of information on this forum, as here:

  • How to install the OS on Portege R100?

I have a Portege R100 by the usual means. It has been formatted so it doesn t have something about that. I read there are three ways to install an operating system. PC with USB CD-rom card, I tried without success since the pc card is a 32-bit card.

I ve tried to locate some computer dealers but they've all sent me away. Where can I buy (live in Trondheim, Norway) good CD with the specific pc card that would make me start the CD of Windows XP Home edition? Apparently Toshiba doesn't have a webshop with accessories. Is there another way to install Windows XP Home edition?
Can I boot from a USB pin if I copy the CD of Windows XP Home edition for that?

    IM desperate please answer :)

    Lars cordially

    Hello, Lars

If you want to use the original recovery media in this case, you must use external Toshiba card PC CD/DVD. The recovery image contains disk driver and because of this, the reader will be recognized correctly and start procedure will work automatically.

If you want to use the own external device, you must use BACK pilot to first use and after use of the drive. On this forum, one user recommended to copy the contents of the full version of Microsoft on the second partition CD and after that start the installation from there.

I didn t try so far and cannot give you more specific information how to proceed.

    Bye and good luck!

  • Portege R100 - burn my own recovery CD

    Hello
I tried to reinstall Windows on my Portege R100 for weeks and finally discovered

    http://support.toshiba-tro.de/KB0/TSB5100S70004R01.htm

It is said that if you have a CD player of UBS by Toshiba or something equivalent and appropriate recovery CD, you can boot from the recovery CD to reinstall Windows.
But I have the recovery CD is not that one "appropriate". In this case, the above document suggests to download the bootimage for floppy drive, then

"you can make your own CD for recovery bootable directly with this bootimage, if extract you it and use as (1, 44MB) floppy emulation in your Favorites, engraving software and combine it with data from the original CD."

Can someone explain what this means? Once you unzip the bootimage file attached to the document, you will get a .exe file, which, when you click on, trying to put a bootable diskette. How can I use this .exe file to create a bootable CD?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

On this Toshiba document described how you can preinstall your Portege R100 using original recovery (already delivered) media. As you can see you can use Toshiba external drives listed there and on this installation path is very easy because the designed Toshiba recovery image already contains the necessary driver for Toshiba external drives.

If you n t have Toshiba drives but start other USB drives, you can retrieve the device using Toshiba drive.

There is nothing on your recovery media burning on this document. As far as I know, you can do so by using some applications like Norton Ghost (I use it) and if you have an external hard drive. Application of Norton Ghost to make the recovery image on the HARD drive directly (I prefer this option and save the image on the D partition) or burn it to CD/DVD bootable.

  • Portege R100 - network controller driver

I just installed windows7 Enterprise version on this laptop and I have a Code 28 message in the status window of the network/device/general/controller management device.

He cannot find a suitable driver.

Of course, I'll need to install via a CD or the floppy disk that I can't currently access to the network or to the internet via the phone.

But can someone give me the url for an appropriate driver.

    Thank you

    Rob

    Hello

I think it might be a little difficult to find a controller driver Ethernet for Portege R100. The fact is that this laptop old enough supports to competition from Windows XP, according to Toshiba European driver download page.

Therefore, search for other pilot sites. Most of the Vista drivers are also working on Windows 7, you need to find Vista drivers.
What Ethernet controller do you have?
If it s a Realtek for example, you can search the site from Realtek: [www.realtek.com]
    Or e.g. Intel-online [www.intel.com]

  • Install an operating system on the Portege R100 laptop via my RIS server

I am trying to install Windows XP on one of my laptop Toshiba Portege R100 customers via my RIS server, I install the RIS server correctly with network card drivers, but my problem is that the laptop says "NTLDR is missing, cannot resume" and restarting the laptop and I would remove the battery and put it back in front of the laptop would work and then I could get to the PXE boot agent and then it would crash and I would still have to the whole process.

I know that this problem is to do with a corrupted CMOS sensor but how am I ment to Flash bios without using it to boot from a floppy drive (external).

Please help it's driving me crazy!

    Thank you

    More details!

    Hello

If a "NTLDR is missing" message that this indicates that the hard drive is not bootable. I think that the Portege customer cannot boot from LAN (RIS server)
Have you enabled the option in the BIOS correctly?

Check if the network boot protocol is enabled. You can choose between PXE and RPL.
And if the LAN has been defined first in the boot order.

  • Installing XP on Portege R100

    Hello.

I'm trying to re - install Windows XP on a Portege R100. I have a CD of tools & utilities but no system recovery disk. I have a Toshiba CR ROM that connects to the laptop through a cardbus. I thought it would be a simple matter of putting my XP install disk in and boot from that. Unfortunately, he gets of how most by installing little drivers, then just at the point where it happens with Windows startup, there's the bluescreen error message blue screen following error:

+ A problem has been detected and Windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

+ If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps (and then continues to tell you to chkdsk/f) +.

    + Technical information: * STOP: 0x0000007b (0xf897f524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) +.

I had similar errors with other laptops by which SATA controller drivers need to be integrated into the Windows Installer disk. Is this a similar situation?

If anyone has any ideas / suggestions, I would be very grateful.

    Kind regards

    Steve

I saw 0x0000007B on my laptop previous installation of XP, it's a problem of HARD disk controller, usually caused when XP cannot find the correct drivers for IDE/SATA controller.

First of all, you need to use a CD of Windows XP Service Pack 2. You can integrate SP2 into the XP CD, google search for "Integrate SP2 XP"

I'm not familiar with this model, but you may need to use a storage F6 driver. Take a look at the Toshiba website for drivers or instructions.

  • Portege R100 - recovery CD lost

Hi... There's a year ago, I had installed a vista transformation pack on my portege r100, but when I uninstalled it, I was still left with icons and displays pop-up ads and other stuff from the Pack... Also, I've lost some features like system restore lately... all this has added to my frustration and I need to reinstall windows XP pro again... But I lost the CD of toshiba recovery... I have a separate bootable XP installation CD although and want to install on my portege

    I have a few questions:
    1. I have an external USB CD RW/DVD Rom Combo from Toshiba. Do I need any other than a bootable XP Pro installation CD?
    2. can I use the serial number of the COA under my portege?
    3. can I use the recovery CD to my friend toshiba instead?

I would appreciate any kind of help on your part, thank you.

    > 1. I have an external USB CD RW/DVD Rom Combo from Toshiba. Do I need something other than a bootable XP Pro installation CD?

You usually have a compatible CD/DVD of PCMCIA drive in order to boot from a floppy disk for Win XP.
But I met some people here in the forum who have tried to reinstall Win XP without using a CD/DVD drive.
    Check these discussions:
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=19232

    > 2. Can I use the serial number of the COA under my portege?
I doubt that this serial number work in relationship with other Windows operating systems. This serial key belongs to the Win operating system on the recovery disk. It s version an OEM and cannot be used with the other Win XP.

    > 3. Can I use the recovery CD from Toshiba to my friend?
You must use the recovery disk that was specially designed for the Portege R100. If your friend is the owner of the Portege R100 even then the recovery disk should work on your Portege R100.
The point is that the recovery disc contains drivers, tools and other software that has been developed only for some notebook series. If you want to use the recovery disk that does not contain drivers for Portege R100 then you could damage it the hardware or an error...

  • Portege R100 boots from the HARD drive - lack of operating system

    Hello

I have a Portege R100 which won't the HD boot, I get the message "missing operating system".
I don't have a compatible CD or floppy, I just about 1.8 inches for the hd, it works and I also have norton ghost 2003 is installed in another computer (a toshiba satellite A45).

I tried to recover the drive with the help of norton and the image of the Ghost in the recovery CD, but it keep asking for a password.

I would like to know if there is a way to use the restore with norton CD and usb driver and password screen (or where I can get the password?).

    Thank you!

    What password do you mean?

and what recovery CD do you use? The image on the Toshiba Recovery CD is locked and cannot be extracted.

It turns out that you cannot start or install the OS on the USB key!
You must boot from the CD/DVD compatible player that can be connected to the PC card slot.
