Dell Diagnostics Audio tests

Dell laptops computers have various diagnostic tools available. Those listed here are those most appropriate to help separate hardware of software audio problems. A few other Dell diagnostic tools are not included here because they use Windows and related audio driver to test the audio, and so they cannot separate hardware issues problems with the software.

l. the pre-boot (PSA or ePSA) testing

It is a set of diagnostics based on ROM, residing in a BIOS chip on the motherboard. The function audio main tests to tell you whether your speakers are working or not. In a case where there is no sound from the speakers, but there is no audio through the headphone jack, you can use the test to determine whether or not the speakers are dead.

> Re-start the computer and press the F12 key as soon as it begins to initialize. If the computer starts Windows, restart the computer and try again.

> Select "Diagnostics" in the start menu, and then press the Enter key. The ePSA or PSA tests will be open - it depends on the model of your laptop.

> Locate an Audio "Make Quick Check" button on the bottom right of the screen to menu main ePSA (see screen capture below). Press the button and listen to the Speaker beeps.

> If you do not have the "Make Quick Check" Audio button then this. Start the PSA tests, and when he runs the test of the colors it will ask you if you see the color bars on the screen. Deliberately fail the test by not answering any (press key "n") instead of Yes. When you do this the PSA test emits a series of beeps. Listen to the beeps.

> If you do not hear the beeps means that the speakers were disconnected or failed.

> If you do not hear the tones means that the speakers are working and are connected. In this case the reason that the audio does not come through them is probably that there no detection circuit in the headphone jack. When this happens, it prevents audio activation of the plug to the speakers. The Headphone Jack FAQ contains more details about this issue.

Here is a screen shot of the quick test Audio ePSA:

If you have the old PSA to test you will be the 'quick check of Audio Perform.'

Dell 32 - bit Diagnostics.

It is a set of diagnostics to include with all new Dell laptops. He resided in a 32-bit of the hard drive partition, where the name. Reference includes Dell is no longer with the laptops. Its usefulness for audio was that he could separate a hardware problem to a software problem. In a case where there is no sound to both speakers and headphones, if Diagnostic Dell 32-bit audio tests fail, then audio has not, not an audio driver or configuration issue.

1 restart the computer and press the f12 key as soon as it begins to initialize.

2. Select "Diagnostics" in the start menu, and then press the Enter key. The computer will run tests PSA (see above) before the beginning of Dell 32-bit Diagnostics.

3 Dell Diagnostics should open after the PSA tests, or you should see an option to open it. If you do not have the 32-bit Dell Diagnostics, then you will not see an option to run.

4. Select 'Custom', then the audio tests. (At this point - after you open Dell Diagnostic custom - if you can't find the option to select the audio test is a symptom of an audio chip faulty.)

5. the tests will run. There are about 6 of them for audio. If you have only one or two, it's a symptom of an audio chip that failed. Some of the tests will play a piece of instrumental music - not just the beeps and tones - and ask you if you heard.

6 If you do not hear the music during the test, it certainly means that there is somewhere a hardware failure in the system.

7. If you hear the audio during the test, but not when you start in Windows, which almost always * means that the material is correct, but there is a problem with the audio driver or Windows.

8. error codes: If you answer "no" questions that ask test, test generates an error code which can indicate a technician that you answered 'no' to this question. The test usually does not pinpoit the exact component that went wrong. Before you answer "no" to a question, take note of the circumstances at that time here so that you know in general what is the error code.

4 c 00:0619 error code - speaker could not be heard
Error Code 1 B 63:061 B - user indicates a failure
Error Code 1 B B 22:061 - analog sound playback - user indicates a failure
Error Code 1 B 22:111 B - audio playback of Mono output
Error code: 1 B 63:181 B - user indicated that they have not heard the expected result
Error code: 1 B 22:071 B - the user's response indicated a failure (external mic test)
Error Code 1 B 63:0268 - Codec could not generate interrupt
Error code: 1 B 63:0667 - Codec could not generate an interruption of the game

Exception

There is a situation where the test will pass even if there is a hardware problem. In a case where there is no sound from the speakers, but there is no audio through the headphone jack, the impedance of the headphone detection mechanism may have failed. Dell 32-bit Diagnostics does not test this specific failure and will pass the audio material. The Headphone Jack of FAQ has more details about it.

LLL. system recovery

The new Dell laptops do not have the Dell 32-bit diagnostic tool. An alternative is to restore the computer to the configuration factory of origin. What worked when the laptop was new works again, at least that there was hardware failure, in order to make a recovery of the system is a diagnostic tool to separate materials of a software failure.

1 factory Image Restore

2. system recovery media

The first time you set up Windows, you are prompted to create a system recovery media. You can use this media to restore the computer laptop, similar to using Factory Image Restore.

4 Dell PC Restore

Factory Image Restore was named "Dell PC Restore" on Dell laptops that had originally Windows XP pre-installed.

LV. compare drivers

If you don't have a Dell 32-bit Diagnostics, a no definitive test is to compare the audio driver from the manufacturer and the driver audio Windows native. If you have the same symptoms with two drivers, there is a strong suspicion that the problem is caused by the material.

Open Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the start search box), and then expand "Audio...". Controllers '. Locate the audio driver. It will have one of these names:

  • Realtek High Definition Audio
  • IDT High Definition Audio Codec
  • Conexant High Definition Audio
  • Conexant HD SmartAudio
  • SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec
  • Audio device high definition

If she is named "High definition Audio Device", then you use the native Windows driver. Download and install the driver from the manufacturer of the download page for your laptop computer on the Dell site.

If your audio driver is one of the manufacturers, you need to remove in order to install the native driver for Windows.

1. while still in the Device Manager, right click on the driver to open the context menu.

2. click on "Uninstall".

3. check the 'delete the driver for this device '. Don't skip this step.

4 reboot the laptop. Go back to Device Manager and check the sound... Controllers. If the driver from the manufacturer is still there, repeat the procedure until it is no longer. He will be replaced by the native Windows driver named "High definition Audio Device".

Note: to reinstall the audio driver from the manufacturer, download a new copy on the Dell site.

V. Tools of diagnosis Alienware

Computers laptops Alienware have various diagnostic tools available. Those listed here are those most appropriate to help separate hardware of software audio problems.

1. evaluation of pre-boot ePSA/PSA tests

It is a limited set of diagnosis, but it can be used to determine if the internal speakers have failed. Instructions here. Screenshots here.

2. "Alenware 32 - bit Diagnostics.

Some of Alienware laptops have a tool on a support disk that is similar to the Dell 32 - bit Diagnostics described above. The instructions vary depending on the model, so look in summary in resolution of the problems of your MobileManual > software Diagnostic tools.

[Models with her are R2 M11 M11x, M15x and M17x M17x R2].

3. system recovery

New laptops do not have 32-bit diagnostic tool. An alternative is to restore the computer to the configuration factory of origin. What worked when the laptop was new works again, at least that there was hardware failure, in order to make a recovery of the system is a diagnostic tool to separate materials of a software failure.

Respawn Alien is a restore image that is similar to the Factory Image Restore described above. Some models use DataSafe Local Backup. Look in your table MobileManual of material in respect of the recovery of the system.

4. the models without a MobileManual

There is some variation in the Alienware instructions according to the model, so it is best to consult the MobileManual, but the models listed below, apparently just to have a Quick Start Guide:

Alienware, 14, 17, 18, M14x, R4, M18x, and M18x R2 M17x R2 &.

    Hello

If it fails the S.M.A.R.T. test, replace the hard drive.

    https://en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

S.M.A.R.T. (-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology; often written as SMART) is a monitoring system included in computer hard drives (HDD) and the SSD drives (SSD)[1] that detects and reports on various indicators of reliability of the car, in order to allow the anticipation of hardware failures.

When the S.M.A.R.T. data indicate a failure of the imminent drive possible, software running on the host system can notify the user so stored data can be copied onto another storage device, prevent data loss, and the failed drive can be replaced.

    See you soon.

  • PowerEdge 840 Dell diagnostics on HDD utilities, even on the cd?

When the PowerEdge 840 Server starts, you can press F10 for "Mode Utility" which charge a diagnostic tool which seems to be a score of 57 pre-created MB. We also got the CD with the server, 'diagnosis and service systems","Drivers and utilities", etc.

These CDs contain the same on that pre-installed diags utility on the hard drive? In other words, can I just wipe all of your hard drive and install linux instead, and when necessary, run the diagnostics from the CD? (although I suppose that by pressing F10 doesn't work then). Or should I keep this partition with utilities.

There is also a 2.2 GB empty partition. Which is necessary as well? For example the utility from the 57 MB partition should the other 2.2 GB partition for temporary files, or something?

  • Dell Vostro 1510 Audio has stopped working after the update of Windows Vista.

    Nice day!

My computer (vostro 1510) began to revolt recently and I wonder if you could help me with this.

Basically, last week I was talking to my friend on Skype when suddenly my computer restarted due to the update of Windows (I have Windows Vista Business 32-bit). After he turned his back, I realized that there is no audio from the speakers. I tried using headphones but still - no sound.

Immediately, I went to the 'Sounds' menu and checked if my speakers were still 'active '. They have been.
Next thing I decided to do was to reinstall the Realtek audio driver, however, did not help or the other. Since then, I tried to reinstall several times but, unfortunately, everything remained the same.

Then, I thought that maybe something was wrong with my hardware, however, audio spent ALL Dell diagnostics audio tests (so my hardware is very good, yes?). I also tried "System Restore" option and returned to the point before the update... Nothing has changed!

In addition, as far as I know, all the audio settings in Windows (checked in Registry Editor) are OK.

What should I do now? My last hope is to completely reinstall the system, however, I decided to contact you first.

    Thanks in advance!

Solved the problem by reinstalling the operating system.

    Thank you!

  • Help! I currently have no audio data

Hey, it's the first time on this forum posting, but I have an old dell laptop inspiron 9300 and I did a clean install of windows xp so I can play minecraft without lag, and as well in windows 7 (which was on the laptop before I wiped it) and windows xp, I had no sound... I tried literally everything I can think of maybe but still no luck! I tried to uninstall the drivers and installation of older, installed the generic drivers, play with the settings of the sound, diagnostics utilities (but driver manager and dell diagnostics utility say audio works), I checked on the headphone jack but the switch where it is supposed to be (but I have no sound from headphones too), please someone help out me here sound very annoying not being not able to listen to mp3s and youtube

Well, different things can fail. Speakers may fail, a connection may be loose, or the chip audio itself may fail. Dell Diagnostics audio tests can determine failure but usually not the component that failed. Failure can be age, heat, vibration, abuse, static electricity, power surge, manufacturing defect - all electronic any usual reasons may fail.

  • No sound on speakers

    Hello

I have a DELL XPS 17 L701X- and in recent days he is no more sound on the speakers built-in. When I plug the headphones it is solid. The driver for the card (Realtek) sound is the most recent.

Also a restore to an earlier point in time it not solved the problem.

    Can anyone help?

Thank you and see you soon

You must first re - install the audio driver, or alternatively, you can delete in "remove a program. If you do a simple uninstall without deleting, when you restart Windows re - installs which will give its parameters by default those. Or if remove you it and reboot then Windows will install its audio driver base. In both cases if you still can't get audio speakers you may have the problem, I will describe below.

    *************************************************************************************************************

Audio with HD Dell laptops (all models newer than the Inspiron 9300) use technology of switching in the headphone jack, which is a bit complicated. In addition to the usual mechanical parts, making also uses current technology & detection of impedance to software configuration of trigger and switching (to send the audio signal to the speakers). Laptops with these shots sometimes develop this combination of symptoms:

    * Speakers do not work and are not active or deselected
    * Headphone Jack works
    * Reinstall audio driver does not help
    * Audio test Dell Diagnostics passes
    * On models with 2 headphone jacks, you can be "verified" in the dashboard as if in use
    * Sometimes, but not always, a very gentle agitation to a plug in the plug will get to resume normal operation, at least temporarily.

This combination of symptoms means that the sense in making PIN does not work for some reason any. Failure of the spindle sense translates the computer behaves as if there is always a plug into the socket. The software switch that should send audio to the speakers did not get fired.

There are 3 ways to check if you have a PIN missed sense:

    1. check that the combination of symptoms I listed. If you have all of them then it is pretty certain that you have the PIN direction failed. Note that when you run Dell Diagnostics audio tests, you should hear the speakers. It's the opposite of what one would expect. But note that if you do not hear the sound on the speakers during the tests there is an another hardware problem, not a wrong pin.

    2. replace the headphone jack. If this solves the problem that confirms that you have had a PIN sense failed.

    3. replace the laptop to its original factory configuration. This is called PC Restore in XP and Factory Image Restore in Vista. If the speakers don't work always after that PC/Factory Image Restore and you have the combination of the symptoms listed above, it is a final confirmation of a sense pin failed.

The only way to fix a plug with a missed sense PIN is to replace it. Change the plug on most of the models requires the replacement of the motherboard, but some models have a jack's daughter card that can be replaced by a new one. See down below for the list of models with the advice of jack replaceable.

How to run Dell Diagnostics Audio Tests

These interactive audio tests are designed to limit the problem software or hardware. The tests are independent of Windows and drivers, meaning that it is not serious if those who are working properly or not. To run Dell Diagnostics

1 restart the computer and press the f12 key as soon as it begins to initialize.
    2. Select 'Diagnostic' in the start menu. The computer will run its evaluation of pre-boot (PSA) tests before the start of the Dell Diagnostics. In the PSA, you will hear some tones in the speaker system but it does not adequately test the audio hardware. Dell Diagnostics plays an instrumental piece of music complete with battery, so if you hear only a few tones then you have run only the PSA.
3 Dell Diagnostics should open after the PSA tests, or you should see an option to open it. If you've never reformatted your entire hard drive then Dell Diagnostics will be gone as an option. In this case run it from the CD Drivers and Utilities (resource) If you have a.
    4. Select 'Custom', then the audio tests.
    5. the tests will run. You have no need to run all of them. Just tick or no audio comes through the speakers during the tests.

If you hear speakers during the tests (tests 'pass'), but not once you start in Windows, this result means that you have a software problem. The problem of software should normally be in the audio driver, but if you have the rest of the combination of symptoms, then the software problem is that switching software does not work. But it does not work due to a hardware problem - a PIN sense failed. Dell Diagnostics cannot detect directly a sense PIN failed. That's why Dell Diagnostics produced an opposite result to what one would expect when there is this particular hardware problem.

  • Portable speakers won't play all sounds

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420, and somehow the built-in Laptop speakers won't play any sound at all, even when Windows starts. I run on a Windows Vista.

In any case, I tried to go to Device Manager to uninstall my sound thing called "High definition Audio Device", but this still does not work. Then I tried updating the driver, still not working.

The audio works when I plug headphones to one of the thing taken, but only on one, I have two of these good output jacks.

Can someone guide me please how I can solve this problem? Thank you.

Try to run the Dell Diagnostics audio tests. These interactive audio tests are designed to limit the problem software or hardware. The tests are independent of Windows and drivers, meaning that it is not serious if those who are working properly or not. To run Dell Diagnostics

    5. the tests will run. Alternatively using headphones and listen to the speakers in case a signal path works.
The tests will play some audio and ask you if you heard.
6 If you do not hear the music during the test, it certainly means that there is somewhere a hardware failure in the system. In this case Dell will repair the computer if it is still under warranty.
    7. If you hear the audio during the test, but not when you start in Windows, that almost always means the material is correct, but there is a problem with the audio driver or Windows.
    8. error codes: If you answer "no" to any question that the test ask, test generates an error code which can indicate a Dell technician that you answered 'no' to this question. The test does not know the exact component that went wrong. Before you answer "no" to a question, take note of the circumstances at that time here so that you know in general what is the error code.

    *****************************************************************************************************

If the terst passes then try reinstalling the Sigmatel HD audio driver. You can find it in the Audio category of 1420 downloads page. I suggest that for best results you do not use the Dell Download Manager, simply download the normal way you would be using your browser.

    *********************************************************************************************************

If the problem persists after installing the driver, you might have a problem with one of the headphone jacks when a computer has this combination of symptoms:

    * Speakers do not work and are not active or deselected
    * Headphone Jack works
    * Reinstall audio driver does not help
    * Audio test Dell Diagnostics passes
    * On models with 2 headphone jacks, you can be "verified" in the dashboard as if in use

Laptops from Dell with 92HD audio using universal sockets of IDT, which is a bit complicated. In addition to the usual mechanical parts, making also uses current technology & detection of impedance to software configuration of trigger and switching (to send the audio signal to the speakers). There are three areas of potential failure: mechanical, electronic and software. Sometimes a little gentle wiggle of a plug in the plug will get to resume normal operation, at least temporarily. There is a safety edge stem into the socket (pin Sense_A) that is used to detect the presence of plugs, and it may be the cause of the failure to trigger the ignition of the software. Failure of the sense pin usually results in the computer behaves as if there is always a plug into the socket.

Normally the audio test of Dell Diagnostics would confirm that there is a hardware problem, but universal Sockets can cause a false result Diagnostics. This is because diagnoses running BACK, outside of Windows, so a software configuration problem Windows is not relevant to test even if in this case it is caused by the material. If the audio test can spend in Diagnostics, signaling correctly that the configuration of the software is the immediate cause of the problem, but it lacks a hardware, the Jack or safety edge Rod problem, what the root cause. In these cases the reliable diagnostic procedures are only to try a new motherboard or use PC Restore (called Factory Image Restore in Vista) to restore the computer to its original as in factory configuration. If the speakers do not always work after PC/Factory Image Restore, then it is definitely a hardware issue even if it passes the audio test Dell Diagnostics normally infallible.
