Desktop.ini corrupted

Ran/scannow SF and in the report, it said my desktop.ini is corrupt and could not be repaired.  The best answer that I needed, I get a clean desktop.ini file from another computer, but I can't.  Any ideas how to solve this problem or where the web can I go and get own desktop.ini running Windows 7

No I have never had a clear answer to my question. I have however discovered that they are many in my records of more than 80, desktop.ini scattered in my c: drive.  I also discovered that the KB3022345 update is probably the cause of the problem, the problem being the SFC/scannow showing corrupt files found where these files are not really corrupt.  See the link for more information about this update.

http://www.InfoWorld.com/article/2922324/Microsoft-Windows/Windows-usage-Tracker-patch-KB-3022345-triggers-sys-file-corruption-which-SFC-is-unable-to-fix.html

The very big problem after running SFC/scannow, it's that he has locked my user profile, I don't have one that I am the only user of this laptop, and so when I connect my desktop disappeared, came back to the default, and a message appears at the bottom left saying it can not load the user profile and system uses the user profile by default in place.  I had a * to find solution to this problem and how to fix it but finally was able to do so after trying all the other suggestions, the only one that worked made a few small changes in the registry that knowing how even a small mistake can really mess up your system, I followed the well written directions and everything is back to normal.

Thanks for your help. Andrew

    Hi Merlman,

It looks like your system may still have infected files that are not recognized by the scanning software. If system restore has failed to solve this problem, the next step would be to try to repair all files in Windows by performing a SFC/scannow: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747

Remember that your system may have been corrupted too, and you may also need to perform a repair installation: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964 (it indicates if a later version of Internet Explorer is installed and can apply to your system).

You see probably the desktop.ini file that stores the office properties in Windows because you have turned on see the hidden files and folders.

In the earlier version of Windows (XP?), it was possible to hide the .ini desktop in this case, but Vista and later to show them.

  • Satellite U400 - I confused speed up my system - removed desktop.ini icon

Some time ago I moved (or deleted) a desktop.ini icon.
This changed the way files/documents are stored on my computer.

I get a lot of shortcuts that I did not do and seem to not be connected to anything.
There are a lot of ntuser.ini and NTUSER. Icons DAT in different folders.

The files are duplicated, and appear in paces I put them.
No document is missing, but it takes time to find them; the logic of the production system seems to be lost.

How to restore the original system? I don't remember when I made this mistake, and I wonder if I did a system restore or something like that could happen to all the software that I subsequently towards the down loaded.

    Hello

Have you tried using Windows Vista system restore? You can set the operating system goes back to an earlier era. Therefore, you must go into the advanced boot menu, select fix my computer, and then click System Restore.

In the worst cases, you reinstall the full operating system. You can use the function of HARD drive recovery or the Toshiba Recovery disk you burning?

    Good luck!

  • When I start my system, some notifications invites to the top of their own and I still see the desktop.ini file in my documents/files please what this means?

Every time I start my system, the Lync appears, a modem exe shortcut. files also appears, how can I stop this?

I want to know the meaning of desktop.ini, I remove cause it's to show in most of my documents?

Your thread was started successfully in the forum comments, so I moved it to the windows 'Repair and recovery' forum where is is more on the subject.  You must return to your topic and we tell which version of Windows you are using.

Look in your startup folder to see if you see Lync and modem.exe shortcuts in this folder.  If so, remove them and you should no longer see these pop-ups when you connect.

You can get rid of him, but it can return.  Desktop.ini is usually a file hidden, so you must have the display of hidden files and folders active if you do not see it.  Desktop.ini is a file that is present in many files and it is used by the process to "customize the folder.  It allows you to specify multiple behaviors to a folder and what desired icon displayed for a folder.  See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/cc144102(v=vs.85).aspx for a more in-depth explanation of the desktop.ini file.  For certain folders such as My Documents, you should probably leave it alone.  It won't hurt anything especially if you do remove it, but the folder will then behave like any other folder, you can create.

  • desktop.ini files

files desktop.ini appeared on my desktop and after deleting the desktop.ini files it is files/folders that im getting APPLICATION DATA NOT ACCESSIBLE. ACCESS DENIED error message. I also get records that have a blue arrow on it, but these records are not on my computer before. This all started after my sister, transfer photos to my laptop. pls hel

Do you know when this problem started?  Try a system restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem started.  Here is the procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/.  Don't forget to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points.  If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two.  NOTE: You will need to re - install any software and updates that you have installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for updates. You may need to re - download the pictures, but the restoration of the system normally does not affect data files so it's probably not necessary.

BTW, do not delete the desktop.ini file - this is important.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

  • Why file desktop.ini opens in Notepad when I start?

Whenever I have my laptop startup (which is running XP Professional), the desktop.ini file opens in a Notepad file. How can I prevent that to happen?

    Thank you!

You don't need to change all attributes on these files.  All you have to do is show off system files in Solution Explorer.  Hidden files can always be on.  Then, they will not appear on the desktop, but they'll appear when you search using the file Explorer.  And everything still works.

    Hello

As to what you were doing in msconfig to spoil anything, we don't know what you have disabled in msconfig.

  • Can not find the file desktop.ini

I back up my files each week to an external hard drive. When I get asked if I want to copy the desktop.ini file in the HARD disk. Problem is that I can not find where this file is actually located and therefore can not delete it on the source computer. I would like to remove this file to avoid the annoying question whenever I try to save my computer.

I changed the settings for source computer to view the files and hidden folders. After you perform a file search, the system shows a path to the c:\users\valued customer\appdata\roaming\norton utilities 14.
This folder contains only a log of the entries, none of which can be edited or deleted.
Not sure if I do something wrong by looking for the file "ini".
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    You are welcome.

If you don't use Norton, use the uninstall tool to remove all traces of the software.  If she has appeared in the past about the 30 day trial and you disabled, perhaps why the desktop.ini file is displayed.

  • What is a "desktop.ini" file and why it is part of every folder on my drive network hard?

I have Windows vista (64-bit).  I have a WD HDD connected to a linksys E4200 wireless router. I created a music network hard disk, and every time I transfer or rip music to this reader, this "desktop.ini" file appear also in the context of each case.  Is this OK to delete this file?

Desktop.ini is a hidden file, use of Windows operating systems to store folder settings. For example, you have created a music library so desktop.ini will contain the settings to indicate to the user interface to display the files in the folder differently from a normal folder. It will also contain parameters of the custom icons and names.

You can delete the file if you wish; point negative only consequence will be the loss of these parameters/customization.

  • What is ehtumbs_vista.db and desktop.ini and how and is allowed to delete this item

What is ehthumbs_vista.db and desktop.ini and is it OK to delete and if so how to remove

    Thank you

    Hello, zoolady

ehthumbs_vista. DB, that's where the Media Center records the thumbnails for media.
Desktop.ini stores the settings for this particular file.

It's good to remove them both, but they will be re-created automatically. They must be hidden by default, so you can choose to simply do not show the files hidden instead.
