Disable the USB port

How do disable you the two USB ports on the front of a Dell Inspiron 3647? Or better yet, the password protect them?

The problem with the software approaches, either change the registry or by using an application like IntelliAdmin, is they disable all the USB storage for all users. If you won't be able to connect a USB or USB either. Note: If you use them, only the key and encrypted USB drives USB encrypted is HIPAA compliant.

You will also need a password protected administrator account and only this account has the right to change the registry or re - run IntelliAdmin to reactivate the USB access.

The Manual shows two connectors on the motherboard to the front USB ports. If you unplug the cables of these two connectors (be sure to store out of the way or cover with the CHATTERTON, so they can't communicate with the motherboard, case, or any other component), you can physically turn off the two front USB ports.

BUT, BUT... I do not know if that generates an error message when the PC starts, or if the PC starts even when these two cables are disconnected. May be worth a try...

My other thought is to put the PC in a cupboard locked (with adequate ventilation) and only personnel are the key.

Since it is a HIPAA question, you may not be the first to meet, then maybe you can find acceptable solutions to the HiPAAJournal.com or related resources.

    Hello

Have you tried to connect devices directly to the USB port?
Try this and see if the USB device is disconnected, as you mentioned that using the external USB hub.

Generally speaking, it is difficult to say what might cause this
You could try updating the chipset driver.
Of course, you should also check the USB port settings, and power management options for economy.

In device manager-> USB root & hub-> properties you could disable for unique energy saving USB ports.
This also on Win 7 power management.

    Everything is OK down there.

However, when putting my laptop in * hibernation mode *, my Smartphone and my MP3 player continues to be charged!

    Hello

Before you try this, unplug the devices all attached, turn off the PC and remove the power plug.

There should be a jumper on the Board that you can use to remove the settings current CMOS, located just above the cmos battery - move the jumper to the clear position for 30 seconds and then bring him back - see the image at the link below.

    1. my laptop - acer aspire 5030 - has been having this problem for the last five months.

    2. I tried everything including changing service pack, as we have xp professional, he has recently upgraded to vista business 32-bit with service pack 1.

3 tried all the methods start the laptop after a few hours, remove the battery, press the power button for half a minute, and so on.

    4. I finally he formatted a couple of times, but the problem is not.

    5. later, I improved the professional system of vista and installed the latest security patches, but the problem remains

    6. now, I started to update its drivers, although the device is identified to be connected, but is not recognized. "the error message" not recognized usb device "appears. 8. I tried to change some registry values by merging a regedit file in the registry - for display devices that are not present; but still, it has failed.

    9. I then tried to delete the file infcache1.inf in c:\windows\system32\inf, but the problem persists.

    10. Subsequently, I tried to create another registry entry to "disable selective suspend" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\USB by adding DWORD and assigning a binary value of 1.

    11. I tried later also to uninstall all the system devices including USB controllers, drives and the storage controllers, who must still without success.

    15. I have not found the WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drivers\USBSTOR file. SYS in my driver store. This affects the system?

    16. I also contacted manufacturers pnp devices that provided me with most recent and versions compatible drivers for my devices - namely an apple ipod & Seagate external HARD drive - but even after that the drivers are installed properly and the system rebooted the problem remains. Is this something to do with the updated playing driver registry entries does not after the update? OR is what registry entries are configured to only read the entries at the time of the installation of the OS?

    17. I also contacted local sellers who have suggested to me to change the "motherboard". This will help as a last resort?

    18. in the meantime I had also installed other operating systems to Linux - Fedora and Ubuntu; Full Windows XP - Home & Professional and Vista Edition. All these have been installed successfully but do not solve the problem of usb.

    19. I have also raised the original HARD disk & replaced by another HARD disk. also checked the power of all ihee and ehee usb ports to be at least 5 V. I also disabled the automatic deactivation of devices usb by the system. physical contact, ports and connecting cable is fine. the distribution of power is set at 10% for the ihee ports and 20% for ports ehee, which is what is should be the physical output is also close to 5V for all ports connected.

  • When I plug my portable hard drive to the usb port it does not read and display the contents...

When I plug my portable hard drive to the usb port it does not read and display the contents...

    Hi deaza,.

Ø Have you connected the USB hard drive to the computer directly or you have used an external USB hub to connect?

O trying to connect to another USB port to check if it works?

O the hardrive shows in windows of the computer when you connect it?

    Method 1:
If you have installed security software, I suggest you to temporarily disable the security software and connect the USB and check to see if the same problem happens. Make sure that you enable the security software after checking.

Alternatively, you can try to plug the USB key into a different USB port and check if it helps.

    Method 2:
I suggest trying to launch hardware and troubleshooting of devices and check to see if it helps, here is the link:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-to-do-when-a-device-isn ' t-installed-correctly

    Method 3:
If this does not help, then follow these steps:

    (a) remove all your USB devices. Use the safely remove the feature to turn them off.

    (b) open Device Manager and navigate to the section for USB. Uninstall all USB drives. There should be one for each USB port, and then restart.

To open Device Manager, go to the link below and follow the steps:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/open-Device-Manager

    (c) Windows should re - find all of the devices. If it is not the case, note the error message and let us know.

You can also navigate to the link below and follow the steps to install the USB device.

I hope this helps. Let us know the results.

  • Impossible to have exceptions to access to the usb port?

When you try to use VMWare group policy to disable access to the USB port, we are unable to add exceptions to certain devices. We have added the VID/PID in the peripheral "include VID/PID" parameter and the device will be mapped is no longer up to the user vm session. If we close this group policy setting off, the user is then able to use the usb device?

The include parameter is case-sensitive and the value must be entered in hexadecimal format, I know who gets people.

    Hello

Believe me, that's not easy to say what the problem may be. It is important to see if the problem occurs because of hardware or software may be. I recommend you to backup all your data and reinstall the unit using rescue media. On this way the unit will be factory settings and will be clean preinstalled. Test your USB devices and see what happens.

Try to use some standard like USB stick or external HARD disk parts, because in this case, you must not install any drivers please. If you use other devices like USB webcam with own software and drivers, it is possible that something goes wrong, but what. On this path, it is not possible to say.
