disk storage of thin available VM showing double its actual size

I have a 70 GB of that drive virtual available... when I look at the summary of the actual virtual machine this stoarege funded shows 144 GB. the virtual machine disk management shows 70 GB... am confused

You probably have a snapshot of the virtual machine. This causes you actually supply the virtual machine double the size, since in the worst cases, each snapshot can grow as large as the base vmdk.

Also note that put into service space includes the size of RAM configured for the VM swap file (unless you have reservations of memory).

I created the hard disk from VMware to address initial as 40 GB prealloue. After you run a week, I decided it was a mistake - it was much too large (16 GB is more than enough). I stop the machine virtual, unchecked the box pre-allocated on the hard drive settings, applied, restarted the VM, run VMWare Tools, choose "Shrink Partition", and it did. The hard physical file is now 10.5 GB instead of the previous 40 GB. So far so good.

However, VMWare settings does not know it is narrowed, i.e. hard disk settings still shows 40 GB and it won't let not the slider be moved immediately to the left. Go in the Win7 Disk Manager, he does not know he is shrunk, either, that is, it always shows 40 GB. I said DM to shrink the partition (it showed 28 GB free), but he told me that he could reduce only 8 GB. I went ahead and did it, and now DM shows three partitions: the system reserved 100 MB, the partition of 32 GB used and now an unallocated 8 GB one.

How to do everything (VMWare settings, Win7 DM, etc.) to agree on the size, where size is the actual size, for example 10.5 GB? Or, Alternatively, who all agree on 16 GB (and increase the size of the physical hard to 16 GB) are very good, too.

    Thanks for your help.

Without using the pré-alloué, you will get never all disk numbers to "agree" unless your drive is 100% of its capacity.  There are at least three numbers to deal with and understand.  Virtual disk capacity: 40 GB (thinking that it is the actual size of the disk), the size of the logical file system partition: usually matches virtual disk (-less overhead), for example 39 GB and allocated space: 10.5 GB (how much space you actually used).  On the latter, Fusion do not show you this value in the user interface.

As you have seen, you can reduce some putting file systems so a "cap" on the upper limit of size the vmdk virtual will get on the host.  Unallocated space shouldn't be relative, he is just reflecting a gap that is never used.   Think that the capacity of your virtual disk as a credit limit, but you say that I will never ever having a balance of more than $ 500.  It doesn't matter if the limit is triggered or doubled, etc..  You set your own limits, for example the capacity of your virtual disk could be 40, 60, 100 GB, but you already have size your file system to never consume more than 20 GB.  The positive thing is that if you need to grow, all you do is resize the file system, of course if you need more than the current virtual disk capacity, you also up to the size of the virtual disk with the cursor.   Unallocated space in a dynamically allocated file is practically free.

If you are still not happy having so virtual drive potentialcapacity, you can rebuild the virtual disk to a smaller capacity.  There is no tool to resize the ability down into place.  There were to be (ESX) options but it is dangerous enough for most users, for example if you do not reduce the first file system you can lose data.  It is therefore preferable to force users to migrate their data to a new disk, or with a disk cloning tools like Ghost or Clonezilla (free) Converter from VMware, which allows to reconstruct a new machine of the former.

    Someone help here?

Julian, my problem is very similar, though different because I use Veeam.  Here is what I posted on the forums of Veeam - if all goes well, it will help you

Looks like the solution is to uninstall the 'SmVssProvider' who, when running "vssadmin list providers", is listed as:

    The provider name: "SmVssProvider."

    Provider type: hardware

    Provider ID: {24e4e8a3-69cb-4370-8b7b-c5276cd49765}

    Version: 10.84.02

This service is launching the premium add-on snapshot service that you can buy for the MD by Dell line. If you do not buy it, you don't need this provider. (for as far as I understand it at least)

To uninstall this provider, navigate to the folder in the folder storage uninstall VDS - VSS MD. By default, it is at:

C:\Program Files (x 86) \Dell\MD Storage Software\VDS_VSS\Uninstall Modular Disk Storage Hardware Provider (* BE CAREFUL here and double check your path.) There is more than one with a similar path and name.* uninstall program)

Once inside this folder, run the "uninstall modular disk storage hardware Provider.exe.

Note that the uninstall program is very rudimentary - there is no GUI or confirmation that it's over. The file and the service will simply disappear.

This will remove the "SmVssProvider" and the corresponding Windows services:

'Modular disk storage hardware provider' (SMPROVIDER1. EXE - identical to SmProv ~ 1.exe).

In my case, service of 'Modular disk storage hardware provider' has been set to start "Automatic", although it did not work, so I was unable to uninstall the provider without stopping I/O or disruption to my VMs. There is no restart request either. Although YMMV so proceed with caution.

  • Provision of storage optimizer & Thin

Well I use VOP for a bit, can someone tell me why and how I can get VOP watching the vs thin use commissioning / actual size put into service?

And perhaps, to obtain a report on thin provisioning sizes?

Perhaps a graph showing the growth of the provisioning over a period of time? With alerts that can be set when 90% of the lun was actually used?

    Hi Kyle,.

You can see the thin provisioning on a data store ranging in capacity manager/availability and looking at the statistics of data store. You will see a column "committed." Sort by that and it will show you your percent committed - it's next to the column that is the % used. You can schedule this report, simply by clicking the report button.  You will see the column engaged with percentages over 100%. That will tell you where yo u use a provisioning.

    Hello

    1. have you done any change in software on the computer lately?
    2. are you able to install other applications and programs successfully?

Check to see if the problem exists in Safe Mode, if the computer works as expected in mode without failure, then we can solve the problem in the clean boot state. There is an application which is set to start when you start the computer and which launches the installer of Windows.
    a. refer to the article below for the procedure safe mode in Windows XP
A description of the options to start in Windows XP Mode

  • Modular Disk Storage Manager

We are decommissioning of an old server hosting the Modular Disk Storage Manager software and I was wondering if there is a procedure to move it to another host.  Is there a way to copy/export configuration and import it to the new host?

The configuration is stored on the MD table itself. The only thing that is stored on the server's IP SAN network addresses, so that he knows where to find.

So you can just download the last DVD of MD resources for your San, install it on the new server, leave the auto discover table and confirm you can see everything. Once you feel comfortable that it looks good, you can retire the other server (uninstall MDSM or just format the old server).

  • Reduced block size but no big change on the disk storage

    Hi all

This is my first post on this forum and I hope that I won't have any rule of Recommendation to report a question completely distinguish...

I need your advice on the disk storage of a BSO cube, here are the details:

Make tests on a cube of OSI, I reduced the size of the block of 76 032' to 11'232 bytes. Then, I was interested to check if the disk storage has been reduced... So, I took the same set of data and loaded into the old structure as well as in the new structure. For both structures, I have applied exactly the same calc script + has not changed any other settings (such as "cache" for example).

When I checked the results, I was really surprised because with the same set of data, it must 13go to the old structure and still 10 GB for the new even if the size of the block is really small... I've heard that "compression" could play a role here, but except for the compression, you have an idea of the reason why the disk storage is not smaller whith the new block size?

Thanks in advance for your different tips and best regards,
    Laurent
P.S: the density is not very good because I tried to do tests on a smaller data set than the real...

^ ^ ^ You just stated that all of the data is not representative and is actually smaller than reality. So that means you load (approximately) the same set of data in large blocks and small blocks. Guess what happens when it is compressed...

To answer your question, the real test would be, for a number of limited but representative of blocks (good luck with that one), blocks of size reduced and complete tests. That will give you real world block size.

BTW, I'm guessing / hoping that you did all members of dense upper level dynamics. There is almost never (well, sometimes, but really very rarely) a reason to store the dense upper limbs at level. A large part of the time forms dense member of lower level can also be set to dynamic.
