Downgrade ESXi 6.0 to 5.5

Hi all

I installed ESXi 6.0 on a new server, but now I want it downgrade to 5.5. I have already created virtual machines, I don't want to delete.

What is the procedure to do?

Thanks for your replies.

in this case, Yes, install ESXi 5.5.

on an installation successful, you won't see VMs in the inventory, but you have to browse the data store and locate these machines virtual a VMX file and write them in the inventory.

In addition, I wanted to ask you, do you have those created VMs on separate data store or data store where to create virtual machines is the holding of an ESXi 6 OS.

If your ESXi 6 installation and datastore VMFS that organizes your virtual machines are on the same drive, please do not forget during the replacement OS with ESXi 5.5 this facility does not affect the VMFS partition, or alternately if you could use another drive other then that with virtual machines.

  • Remove data for a downgraded ESXi host syslog collector?

We would like to seek your advice on how to remove this entry to ESXi host Syslog collector Page.  Should I restart the service "VMware vSphere Syslog Collector" on vCenter Server?

If the server esxi already downgraded in judgment of sate, then you can delete the syslog file (in vcenter) to as esxi. If the underwater ESXI still running, you can disable forewall port for syslog (even if you can remove the host name of the syslog setting advanced collector.)

  • Possible to downgrade ESXi license?

If having already installed a certain license to an ESXi host, is it possible to change this license at a lower license type?

(I know that a lot of things could go wrong if at all by using the features that can be deleted with the lower license, but I wonder if it's possible).

If you try to apply the license key 'lower' with features enabled that are not covered by this license, you receive an error message, and the license will not apply. I saw a few times with the licenses of Essentials where someone tried to vMotion in Eval mode and the VMkernel ports had not been removed before applying the license key.

  • Reinstall, will retain datastore and VM?

    Hi guys,.

I have a case where I have to "downgrade" ESXi 4.1 4.0 by reinstall.

It will retain the store data and virtual machine?

    Thank you

It depends on where the data store. The installation disk will be reformatted (wiped), all other disk/LUN should not be affected. After installation, you will need to register again the VM to the inventory. Pease double check with the installation guide.

  • Cluster of downgrade of ESXi 4.1 for ESX 4.0 Update 2

I have an ESXi 4.1 3-node cluster.  I would now like to come back on a cluster of ESX 4.0 U2.  I guess I can proceed in the same way that I set at level - free up to a single host. Installing ESX 4.0 on the free web host etc.  I know that U2 4.0 ESX and ESXi 4.1 can coexist in the same cluster as was the case when I first upgraded cluster.  Thus, everyone has done something like this before (downgrade a cluster)?  How should I handle virtual machines that are currently running 4.1 tools?  Thanks in advance.

I've never had to downgrade a cluster but the methodology you listed sounds great.  We all know have mixed cluster will break so I don't see it being a problem to downgrade.   As much as your VM tools has always recommended to run your version of ESX so if long-term current tools your going to be on 4.0 can I remove 4.1 tools and return the 4.0 on.

  • PowerVault MD3420 support for vSphere, Esxi 6.0 6.0?

    Hello

We ordered 4 R730 servers "nine" with 12Gbps SAS and a SAN MD3420 cards. ESXi hosts are preinstalled with ESXi version 6.

Once we have installed 40 VMs on that, we now see that after a reboot, the HBA does not detect the LUNS. Only after the adapter cables HBA and their reversal, it detects the. Also in the selection of the HBA path I see all the options like "round robin" etc.

When I check the site of VMware, it looks all DELL powervault MD32xx/MD34xx without DOING to support ESXI 6.0, with the exception of the MD3420! I checked it before and are beginning to doubt myself / or if the compatibility on the Web site has changed.

I found the solution by installing another driver in the list of lsi, and then disable the native driver.

The appropriate driver is not in the image of DELL ESXi 6.0 A00.

In short, all this on each host:

  • Problem with the start of VMware ESXi 5.0

I just installed VMware ESXi 5.0 on a new Cisco UCS B200 series blade with two 300 GB hard drives configured in a RAID 1 mirror.  I went through and completed the installation of VMware ESXi 5.0 on this server.  When the installation is complete and the server restarted, he did not initiate the ESXi where I can change the IP address and VLAN.  Instead, I get this text string after the initial boot sequence that is shown in the attachment.  I have a guest who said Shell > do not know why I can not start correctly in ESXi 5.0.  Thank you!  Paul

    Hi Paul,.

Looks like you boot to the EFI shell. What is the startup policy that you have configured on this server service profile? It should look like the one below.  If there is a problem with the boot order, you should be able to type "EXIT", then enter on the EFI shell to exit the prompt. If your startup is similar to the one below and you still experience this issue, try to downgrade and re - ack the blade.

Let me know if it helps.

  • How to remove ESXi host of Distributed Switch

    3 Cluster DRS - 1 x physical, 2 nested nodes in a LAB environment

I need to downgrade a 6.0 U2 ESXi host and replace it (from ESXi nested in Physics). I am trying to remove the host from a distributed switch, but it seems that I can't do that until I remove it from the Distributed Switch. I can't remove the VMkernel group management ports that prevents me to remove the host from the Distributed Switch. Any suggestions? I guess that I need that migrate to a Standard switch first?

I am connected to the ESXi host through vSphere Client, migrated the group management to a Standard switch ports, then I was able to clear the host of the distributed switch. I could then remove the host from the Cluster.

  • The ESXi 4.1.0 to 6.0 upgrade. -upgarde and best practices

    Hi guys,.

We are a small business with a single physical server, ESXi 4.1.0 installed with approx. 8 VMs. We plan on buying Essential Kit 6.0 ESXi because that's all we need right now. However, as VMWare says that 4.1.0 to 6.0 upgrade is NOT supported (matrices of the interoperability of products VMware), how we improve our host and VMS?

I guess the correct way will be upgraded from 4.0. 5.5 U3 first, then to 6.0. However, if we buy the 6.0 license essential Kit, that we will be able to always download and install and upgrade of the host and all VMs to U3 5.5, and 6.0. Essentials?

In addition, what are the best practices to upgrade a single host with multiple virtual machines? What I did research, we should back up important files from virtual machine, all critical data, etc. All recommendations are welcome. My understanding is that the upgrade also virtual machines will be upgraded automatically, that's correct - methods of upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (2058352) | VMware KB

    Best regards

    D. Stanchev

    Hello

As you said, you cannot upgrade host ESXi 4.x to 6.x, you must first upgrade 4.x to 5.x and then switch to 6.x

Before moving to 5 or 6, make sure you ESXi host is compatible with ESXi 6.

Check cheque and VMware hardware compatibility list if your server is listed.

Although you'll have a 6 ESXi license kit, you can download ESXi 5.x and use it to upgrade process.

Only if you need to use 5.x permanently, then you need to get your license keys downgraded to 5.x, otherwise once you upgrade host to 5.x, go ahead and level to ESXi 6.x

    Backup-

Before you begin the upgrade, make sure that you have backup of all VMs critics.

Either you can download/export all VMs as OVF, or you can use Veeam's free edition to make the backup of virtual machines

    -Update

You can join the server ESXi ISO Installer and boot server form ISO and update.

During the Installation process make sure to select ' PRESERVER VMFS and upgrade ESXi host '

If you do not keep vmfs, all virtual machines will get deleted during the installation/upgrade process.

Once you get ESXi Host upgrade to Upgrade VMFS 5.x version so that it can support 6.

Then finally the ESXi host to 6.x upgrade, yet once make sure PRESERVE you VMFS during installation.

If you have vCenter Update manager, use update reach the average upgrade easy it is to upgrade.

    Thank you

  • vSphere 6.0 license Standard downgrade then upgrade

    Hi guys,.

Just a quick I'm not quite clear on if possible.

Basically, I have two hosts of ESXi, an old box of 5.5 running on vSphere essentials license and a new box of 6.0 running with the standard license for vSphere.  The new server is not yet in production, and is associated with a San (current storage on the 5.5 server is local)

We have a 4 CPU license for vSphere 6.0 standard, so what I was hoping to do was downgrade 2 CPU of this license to 5.5 and apply it on the 5.5 server, this will enable vMotion and let me live migrate servers of local storage for the new San and across to the new host.  I then tried to shut down the old Server 5.5, rebuild fresh with ESXi 6.0 and then upgrade the number of processors 2 license 6.0 who have been downgraded, back to 6.0.

Is it possible to do so without incurring a cost?  I see that a downgrade is possible for free, but I'm not 100% clear on the component to upgrade.  Basically, I wanted to do it this way to avoid blackouts, but if it comes to it, then I can plan a failure, just try to scope out right now.

    Thank you.

I was wrong. I just checked and you can select 'Upgrade quantity'. I learned something new today.

From the point of view upgrade/downgrade you can make it back as long as you have a valid support contract.

  • ESXi 6.0 U1 U2 upgrade, iSCSI questions

    Hello

First post, so I'll try and summarize my thoughts and what I did with troubleshooting.  Please let me know if I left anything out or more information is required.

I use the free ESXi 6.0 on a Board with a CPU Intel Xeon E3-1231v3 and 32 GB of DDR3 ECC UDIMM mATX to Supermicro X10SLL-F.  I use a 4G USB FlashDrive for start-up, 75 GB 2.5 "SATA to local storage (i.e. /scratch) and part of a 120 GB SSD for the cache of the host, as well as local storage.  The main data store for virtual machines are located on a target (current running FreeNAS 9.3.x). iSCSI  This Setup worked great since installing ESXi 6.0 (June 2015), then 6.0 U1 (September 2015) and I recently made the leap to 6.0 U2.  I thought everything should be business as usual for the upgrade...

However, after upgrading to 6.0 U2 none of the iSCSI volumes are "seen" by ESXi- vmhba38:C0:T0 & vmhba38:C0:T1, although I can confirm that I can ping the iSCSI target and the NIC (vmnic1) vSwitch and VMware iSCSI Software adapter are loaded - I did not bring any changes to ESXi and iSCSI host before the upgrade to 6.0 U2.  It was all work beforehand.

I went then to dig in the newspapers; VMkernel.log and vobd.log all report that there is not able to contact the storage through a network issue.  I also made a few standard network troubleshooting (see VMware KB 1008083); everything going on, with the exception of jumbo frame test.

    I found [a | the?] solution: downgrade for 2.5.4 drivers - Intel e1000e 6.0 U1 6vmw.  For the file name, see VMware KB 2124715 .

    Steps to follow:

    1. Sign in to https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/patch#search
    2. Select ' ESXi (Embedded and Installable) ' and '6.0.0 '.  Click on the Search button.
    3. Look for the update of the release name - of - esxi6.0 - 6.0_update01 (released 10/09/2015). Place a check next to it and then download the button to the right.
    4. Save the file somewhere locally. Open archive ZIP once downloaded.
    5. Navigate to the directory "vib20". Extract from the record of the net-e1000e.  In East drivers Intel e1000e ESXi 6.0 U1: VMware_bootbank_net - e1000e_2.5.4 - 6vmw.600.0.0.2494585.vib
    6. This transfer to your ESXi Server (be it via SCP or even the file within the vSphere Client browser). Save it somewhere you will remember (c.-a-d./tmp).
    7. Connect via SSH on the ESXi 6.0 host.
    8. Issue the command to install it: software esxcli vib install v - /tmp/VMware_bootbank_net-e1000e_2.5.4-6vmw.600.0.0.2494585.vib
    9. Restart the ESXi host.  Once it comes back online your datastore (s) iSCSI / volumes should return.  You can check by issuing h df or the list of devices storage core esxcli at the CLI prompt.  vSphere Client also works

It took some time to find the correct file (s), the steps and commands to use.  I hope someone else can benefit from this.  I love that VMware can provide for virtualization, but lately, it seems that their QA department was out to lunch.

Do not always have a definitive explanation as to why Intel e1000e ESXi 5.5 U3 drivers were used when ESXi 6.0 U1 U2.  Maybe someone with more insight or VMware Support person can.

I havn't done it myself yet, but I think you should be able to achieve your goal, follow these steps:

-downgrade license keys CPU Essentials to v5 im Portal MyVMware

-the value of the new vCenter Server Evaluation Mode (actually maybe not necessary)

-Add the licenses of Essentials v5 license vCenter inventory 6

-Add hosts to the new vCenter Server ESXi 5.5 and assign licenses Essentials guests

-re - assign the license previously removed to vCenter Server

  • vCenter 6 in a WAN configuration - cannot add 6.0.0 ESXi host, is stuck at 80%

    All,

I tried a day now to find a solution to this. We have 6 break-in LAN1 vcenter, connect a host ESXi LAN1 and ESXi another I LAN2. LAN1 and LAN2 are connected with IPsec. Resolution of DNS works both ways, as far as I can tell and all ports are open between the hosts. We had everything up and running but due to hardware failure, needed to replace the ESXi I LAN2.

With the new host in place, I am not able to add to vcenter. I tried to use the name and IP address. I even downgraded to a previous version of ESXi, but all does not work, stuck at 80% progress bar. Then the message "Failed to contact the host specified." Checking the logs I see that vcenter is actually connected to ESXi in LAN2 and creating the account vpxuser to communication works in one way at least.

I remember I had the problems of implementation of the previous host in LAN2, but all of a sudden it worked simply.

  • ESXi 5.1.0 adding new license

    Hello

I installed vmware ESXi 5.1.0 with free license last year. And today a new license of vSphere Essentials 6.

Now, I want to add new license to esx, but it gives me

    License downgrade WARNING

Some features will be unavailable after the transfer of license

    Host: my host name

    from: unlimited

    to: unlicensed

The following features will be unavailable

    * Up to 32 GB of memory

    * Up to 8-way SMP

Caveat. is this normal? I would add new license without no problem safely? And now I can't add 192 GB of memory without limits?

    Thank you

If you need to keep up with the 5.x version and not upgrade to version 6, you have you downgrade the v6 license key because it does not work with v5.x Setup.

See VMware KB: how to move license keys in my VMware for more information on decommissioning in MyVMWare.

That's why you get the ' to: without a license "message, because the key to the v6 is not valid in v5.

  • ESXi 5.5 license error

    Hello

I am trying to add a Standard 6 of vSphere license to an ESXi host 5.5 using vCenter 5.5. The environment is the following:

    vCenter Server 5.5 Standard license

    1 host stand-alone ESXi 5.5

VPP L3 VMware VMware vSphere 6 with the standard of operations management

I'm sure that our supplier mentioned as a vSphere license 6 can be used on a host ESXi 5.5 but I get the following error when trying to add it to vCenter:

    lic_error.jpg

Can you get it someone please let me know if I can really add a vSphere license 6 to 5.5 ESXi host?

    Elodie

I'm sure that our supplier mentioned as a vSphere license 6 can be used on a host ESXi 5.5...

I'm not aware of such an option. To assign a license to vCenter Server or host, you must have the appropriate license key / version. What you need to do is to downgrade the license in your portal MyVMware.
