  My girlfriend has a desktop Dell XPS 420 quit working a year or 2 ago. A computer technician told me that it sounded as if the hard drive was bad, recently I purchased from Dell, a Seagate 1 TB hard drive (the original is a Western Digital 320 GB).

  I bought also, once again from Dell, a copy of its installation discs for Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

  I installed the new hard drive, correctly, as far as I can tell, but I tried several times over the past days to install Vista and a few times I got errors (BSoD) STOP and a few other times, Windows Installer errors.

  What's wrong?

  I run Dell diagnostics that took almost a whole day, but I don't think anything. I have not partitioned the hard drive, it's like 931 GB.

  I think that may be something related to the RAM, but I'm not sure.

  So yes actually hear nothing helped me.  Seems that, given that the computer is not stopped correctly and my hard drive was not recognized there starting the cycle upward or give me the BSOD.  Put it in my Ubuntu CD spare which I've had since my last PC hard drive became corrupt and force back across my hard drive.  After doing this, I was able to do a boot repair, who led for the BSOD.  Not sure how that actually fixed, lost about 10 hours of my day.  So I guess I can chalk up to Microsoft and a reminder on why I should buy Mac for now on... an update shouldn't really cause such problems.

  I get that not everyone has the same PC, so it is difficult to tell if an update is bad, but he should not do this and if an update is the cause of a certain segment of consumers who are updating must be taken down for everyone, or at least the users with the configuration that is known to have problems with an update.

  Unplug all external devices.

  Try to start in safe mode. If you can start in safe mode, and then do a system restore to restore the computer to an earlier point in time.

  Change the recovery settings to disable automatic reboot, if you are able to boot up to the desktop computer:

  1.	Right-click my computerand then click Properties.
  2.	Click the Advanced tab.
  3.	Under Startup and recovery, click settings to open the Startup and recovery dialog box.
  4.	Clear the automatically restart check box, and then click OK many times necessary.
  5.	Restart your computer so that the settings take effect.

  Now, when you are going to close and a fatal error occurs, you will see at least and it won't cause an automatic restart.

  Please reply back with the error message you get because it helps us to resolve the error.

  Everything you did corrupt the existing installation. Using the option boot LAN would do nothing for you, that is used to install windows from a network, not repairs.

  Your best bet would be loaded from the recovery console or safe mode with system restore command prompt. If this fails, you might have to reinstall Windows to repair the file system damage. You will need a Vista installation disc to access the Recovery Console, from here, you can run rstrui.exe to start the system restore.

Now, Vista does not load, I get a blue screen saying Windows has been shut down to avoid damage to the computer, it gives an error 0X0000C1F5 shutdown more it give fixing options like Unplug appliances and start in safe mode, but none of it works. I tried all the options in the F8 menu, I tried F12 and I also tried to use a new Windows Vista disk to start. I also ran the repair of the system and checked every option it gives under the menu in advance. Someone please help me I am at a loss. How an update to do this. I know that this is not a virus, because I did an audit of security with CA and done a defrag through the system until I installed updates. It was my weekly check for the computer that day.

  Go to Preferences, Performance tab and uncheck the 'use graphics processor '.
