DVD and CDROM will not read the disc

I recently reinstalled Vista on my PC. In the process, I put a lot of files on a DVD rom for backup. My PC is now updated and everything works fine. However, I put he disc in the drive, it will attempt to read, but no files appear on the disc. However, when I click on "computer", then "E: / (DVD rom player)" it shows who have 4 + GB of information stored on disk. How can I get these files to appear and become available?

Hi dharmapaws,

This can sometimes happen if an audio device is disabled or if windows media player is already running in the background when the disc is inserted, then you can check this.

You can also check if you are able to recover the files on another computer. If so, see if you can extract them and burn a new copy.

Hope this information is useful.

  • Vista will not read the disc, MPEG-2

Hello. I recorded a few tv programs with my dvd burner, and it always does to the MPEG-2 format. But when I pop the disk in my laptop, windows does not detect the file, it detects the drive but please nothing to her which means that it wont let me convert. In fact, I want to convert the file into an mp4 so I can put the things that I recorded on my ipod when I go on vacation. Do I need some kind of code that allows windows to read the files on the disk? see you soon

    Hello

You can not read these files is because you have not a compatible MPEG-2 decoder (also called a DVD decoder) is installed on your computer. You will need
to download the codec or you can upgrade the existing DVD decoder Codec.

    Refer to this article:

Supported decoders MPEG - 2 software DVD in Windows Media Player for Windows XP and Windows Vista
    http://support.Microsoft.com/default.aspx/KB/306331

To ensure that the player can try to download codecs automatically, you must maintain Internet access while playing the file and your Internet security should be set to
Middle. In addition, you must be logged in as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group. Now, follow these steps in Windows Media Player:
    a. click the arrow below the now playing tab, and then click More Options.
    b. on the Player tab, select download them codecs automatically check box.

You can even try to download codecs manually. Search using your search engine preferred for more information.

    Can anyone help?
Does anyone have information on how to remove these disks of the computer? Im sure I can install a new one myself if I really need to.
Unfortunately the computer is just out of warranty

    Hi Robert,.

Unfortunately, your problem sounds like a problem with the hardware with the optical drive. The player itself must be able to refocus its lenses to switch between DVD and CD formats, and also to pass the pressed DVD and DVD burned.

I suggest you tyre remove the device from the Device Manager Control Panel, then restart your laptop so that the optical drive will be recognized as a new component hardware and Windows will then be re - install with standard drivers etc. If this does not work then it looks like a new drive will be necessary.

Unfortunately you say not what model of laptop you have (the removal procedure is not the same in all cases), but in general if the car is equipped with in-house it is held in place with one or two screws accessible from the bottom of the laptop that should be removed first, then the optical drive can be slid out of its location.

    Hello

You have disk problems as the CD/DVD is actually 4 discs in 1 case (CD & DVD burning and)
Playback of CD and DVD). So it is not unusual for parts from 1 or 2 to not work so that others do
    correctly.

Burning at low speed, or by using the master could help. A CD/DVD cleaner might help.

Brand of the CD or DVD drive can also be the problem. Low quality (cheap brands) are always problematic.

CD/DVDs have a tolerance + - and your can read/write on the edge outside these discs
tolerances. They may be delivered, but it is generally more economical to replace the disk.
