Equium A60 overheating issues - thermal paste fix

Hello

Recently, I experienced the same problems of overheating seen by many others on this forum. I even found this forum searching for a fix for the problem.

* This announcement should be used as a guide only - repairs are undertaken at your own risk *.

Now, my laptop is sitting next to me, idling at about 50 degrees - which is a massive improvement on the 64 degrees it was yesterday!

To resolve this problem, I used the method to blow all the dust from the orifice (covered many messages in this forum). However, I also dared to disassemble the laptop and give it a THOROUGH clean. It is a process long and complicated - but not beyond everyone. Firstly - I used this found here guide to disassemble the laptop - http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/ToshibaA65/satA65_1.htm - be sure to keep * ALL * the dismantled parts!

Once this done, you will find with the main card exposed. After that, I undid the screws that keep the TFT on the hinge and separated it from the chassis, while he was in two parts. Then, I removed gently the connector TFT from its place on the motherboard. There is a small screw, an additional wire to the TFT Ribbon to the chassis - I left it on, as I could not? t remove it! Then, I removed the Ribbon for the touchpad (carefully!) and carefully lifted the plastic all silver, away from the chassis part. Then I disconnected the power switch of the card mother - and completely taken off the plastic part.

Now, the heat sink everything will be displayed. From there, it gets a little more complicated - and consists of removing your radiator and the processor. If you are not willing to do that, or just think you don? t want to tinker with the "inner workings" - have a good clean around the parts that are exposed and then replace all the parts you have subscribed. For people who have problems of overheating worse - the following steps worked for me very well.

Presentations will be the whole radiator and fan. The silver on the metal heatsink screws are numbered - and I removed these sequentially. Then I unplugged the fan power cables and removed the screws at the right end of the fan. The heatsink should now clear the chassis lift, exposing the processor set. Then, I took the processor out of the chassis. You should now have a processor and a heatsink in front of you. The two should be a gray paste, gunky. This is known as the thermal paste and ensures a dispersion of heat from the chip on the radiator. On my parts, dough was propagated by the heat and on the sides of the chip - shifted far from where it was most needed. Now, I didn? t actually have a spare block when I took it apart last night - so I'm a plectrum guitar and smooth paste heatsink of heat and the chip on the surface of the chip. Once I covered the chip in a level amount of dough, I placed in the chassis and refitted the heatsink. Finally, I replaced everything what I had - and the powers of the laptop on the property.

I realize that this might not work for everyone - I had nothing to do last night, and it was a ditch last try to improve the management of the heat of this laptop. Fortunately for me it worked. I am looking for a thermal paste today, so that I can make a good application of paste on the chip before that I re - assemble again.

Of course, if you have a warranty on the laptop, it is not a good idea to open it up and execute this method. I recommend that people who have confidence in the performance of this procedure to try - it? s not dangerous - but you can mess up the inside of the laptop / your processor, if you're not careful.

Good luck!

Sam

Hi Samuel

First of all, I want to thank you for this very detailed and long ;) description.
But as you say if the warranty is valid the user shouldn't? t open Notepad and do something. In this way the service guys should check. Then if people don't have any experience in this method they shouldn't? t do that, because it might be possible that something different is going dead.
However, thanks again.

    Hi Dave,.

I think he should assume that your problems stem from overheating. It is very common for the dust and debris to form and block the passage of air through the CPU cooler. I suggest trying to remove such an accumulation or blowing into the heatsink (towards the cooling fans), or by sucking debris with a household vacuum. If all else fails, then you can remove the heat sink and the dust before replaceing it. Beware that this may invalidate your warranty.

Normally a thermal trigger remove power if it detects the CPU heat too, but this does not mean that other problems cannot occur.

If you still have problems with you appear after you have addressed the issue of overheating then please post again.

  • Equium A60-199 randomly shutting down - could it be overheating issue

Hi, I am writing on behalf of a friend who knows his laptop A60 closing unexpectedlly... (she says that he stopped after a few minutes, or when she tried to open Firefox)

    Details of system
Toshiba Equium A60-199 Model No.: PSA67E-00J00C8J
    18 GB free & 19 GB used
    512 MB OF RAM
    CPU Celeron 2.93GH

    Running Windows XP Home
    NIS 2006

I took a look at distance and was about 30 minutes without any problem using FF logmeinitreach... There was nothing showing in the event log manager, for the time of day, that it would close down all before... so I was wondering if it is a faulty power supply?

Everythng is going on well just clicked on the analysis of complete system of Norton Internet security which has not been run in a long time and the PC, stop NOW, it will not restart everything. ??

Apparently she can hear some buzzing but nothing happens... (which I think might well be the blow fan)

Advised her to let a little and about 2 hours later, she was able to turn it back on... I wonder if it could be overheating. ??

Apparently he is 3/4 months than what was going on then ceased to happen and started again...

Please can you give me some advice on how to clean it - other than to take it to a hardware shop

I downloaded the A60 user manual and have themselves asked to confirm what show the lights - in an attempt to check overheating
    is the question...

I've also read online "you can spray compressed air into the gills of admission but not airflow vents to help get rid of the dust and debris." I have looked at the manual and can see 2 lots of mouths... It is on the side and the other on the bottom, is e eintake the one on the side? I literally direct the air on side air intakes and the spray?

When you ask him if she knows that when the fan is always, sometimes on, never an etc. she was thinking ot is ALWAYS on... who'd show up again overheating...

    Please notify

    Hello Cathy

I also believe that the sudden stops are the result of overheating. If the dust is blocking cooling air flow grill is blocked and material can reach the critical temperature of material very fast. Sometimes you can start any application pre-installed, the CPU usage goes to the next level and laptop will suddenly stop.

The laptop should be cleaned as soon as possible. If you have no experience with the disassembly procedure I recommend you contact the closest service and the laptop must be cleaned on professional way. It costs a little bit, but you can be sure that you use Notepad for a longer period of time.

If you need the addresses and phone numbers to contact the ASP (authorized service provider) please visit http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > support & downloads.

    Bye and good luck!

  • Overheating on Equium A60-155

    Hi all

I've owned an equium a60-155 for almost a year now, it has been discovered, but recently it began to close, which I suppose is overheating.

the vents are clear and unblocked, although the area around the Equium logo (top right of the base unit) feels very warm after a closed random

I use the machine for work and play and sometimes watching DVDs

for about 2 weeks, ao that the machine started randomly turning its self, without warning, the machine sits on a table and the underside and rear passages are clear

There is no virus/spy/software advertising on my machine and all programs are updated

Anyone know of a cause or a solution to my problem?

    Thanks in advance

    Jake Houghton

    Hello

Well, if there are cooling vents are free and not dirty, so I guess that the cooling fans are working properly. In this case, what you can do is to check the settings for standby power.
Try changing the method of control of the CPU to Auto. Also, check if the cooling method is set for maximum performance.

  • Issues with my Equium A60-192

I've had my Toshiba for over 2 years,

Here is a list of my problems and there are so so many might save some time would be great!

1 overheating - I sent to PC Mastercare 3 times and all they do is clean the fan and the heat sink. As many people have said about the thermal paste I think it is a problem that requires urgent attention.
Although the problem is, when I recover the computer is fine for about 6 months and then it starts again!

    2. the recovery disc. Being an Amature-semi-professional Windows understanding, there are a few directories that do NOT, for example delete microsoft frontpage (Attention to the record all lowercase) I think that there is some kind of hidden virus that is at fault. Although it is a recovery disk, you wonder if this is something you should look at. However, this isn't a nice feeling to know that you can not delete a single file (which does nothing)

    3. as many people have said about Windows just suddening not allowing start because some files are not present! This is yesterday for me, and with a little persistence, I managed to back up all my files and retrieved using the doubtful recovery disk.

    And the final point!

    4. the computer does not seem to lose a huge amount of processing power, even if it is a 2.5 Ghz! I wonder if I need to add more RAM or there is an underlying problem. I just picked up the computer and it works fine!

If you could point me in the right direction, I would be grateful.

PS my laptop was a series of laptop that were shipped with the wrong BIOS. I've updated, but I wonder if it exceeds the BIOS that is defective!

    Bravo guys! (and girls)

    HI Chris,

Sorry to hear about your problems, but here are some tips to get on with: -.

    1. overheating. It is a very common on laptops problem and if your search these forums you'll see discussed many times. The general rule is to ensure that dust and debris is reduced to a minimum in the radiator of CPU. Given that the cooling air is always being drawn in through the gills of contribution of background, it is obvious that dust accumulates. I clean my SA30 using hose of a vacuum cleaner to fear that once a month and that let it run fine without any problem of overheating. You'd be amazed how much dust crosses a few months.

2 recovery discs. It is very unlikely that you have a virus "hidden". The recovery disks typically contain an image "Ghost" of a default operating system will contain some surprising elements. The 'frontpage' file is one of these elements. It is part of the base build XP but is not filled if will show just like an empty folder (usually contains a "version" file, which is also empty. It is normal.

3 Windows starts do not. In general, if Windows has this kind of problem there are two culprits, either a rogue application (or virus) has damaged or written too part of the OS or the hard drive has experienced some kind of problem (impact or vibration for example). I've had just that kind of behavior with my own laptop and it generally preceded by a hard disk failure. I suggest that you run CHKDSK on the drive to check for bad sectors.

    4. the current treatment. When the unit is newly installed from media of recovery it will work generally quite well, but you use the portable computer the contents of the disc will become more fragmented especially if you add other applications, or do a lot of browsing on the internet. I would recommend that you regularly run utilities cleaning/Desk (at least once a week) Disk Defragmenter to keep things smooth. I recommend also to download and install the malicious utilities (such as Lavasoft Adaware, Spybot and Windows Defender from Microsoft). Run those weeklies as well to make sure that the bad guys are not allowed to infect your system. Extra RAM will also help, but the benefits will be seen most noticeably if you are running heavy applications (such as games or video editors) or if you open several applications at the same time.

    Hope the above is helpful.

  • Equium A60: ATI mobility issues

I have an Equium A60 (PSA67E) with Celeron 2.80 ghz, 192 RAM, windows XP, and a 7000IGP ATI MOBILITY RADEON I bought jan 2005.
I use the laptop and after 10 minutes a message appears and tells the driver has stopped working and I need a new. Which driver should I download for this stop happening? Ive looked to other people having problems with the infanite loop and its recommended location to download a bios updared will this help?

I sent ATI and they said I need to contact toshiba

It is also is so slow when I try and work on it, I've defragmented it but it works still slow. Would this becaure to have 192 RAM?

    Thank you for your help

    Hello

First of all, I would recommend trying the page of the Toshiba driver graphics card driver:
    http://EU.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp
You choose unit and OS and download and install the driver.

In my opinion, your device must use min 256 MB memory.
But it is not only the problem of memory. Some software programs and background processes may decrease the performance of the laptop.

  • Related issue wireless on Equium A60

I have a laptop Equium A60 and upward of unitll recently, that I would never use wireless, but now I do, and I seem to have run into a problem.

The computer is (apparently) configured to use wifi, but when I went to turn on the switch on the side of the computer's wireless, it wasn't a slide, but rather as a "on pop, pop off" piece of plastic with no way to 'turn on' the wifi connection.

Is anyway to turn on internal capacity?

  • Equium A60 issue of the wireless USB mouse

I bought 3 optical mouse for my equium A60. The first 2 have worked for a short period, but then appeared to be very erratic, beating on the entire screen and the slightest touch. • Equium A60-155: ATi Mobility graphics card problem

    Hello

I have a laptop Equium A60, recently I am getting error informing messages than the "display driver ATi2mtag has stopped working properly.
I have reset my machine as told to do the error dialog box. Reset works fine, but the laptop crashes to the desktop, when turned off and on again once I get the Safe Mode screen.

I reinstalled the driver for the graphics card several times, and the error persists through safe mode. The returned error and trying to open in safe mode, the machine flashed a blue screen of death, too fast for me to read, even applied for each of the available options. I was unable to cross this safe mode selection screen.

As a last resort that I reformatted my laptop, using the Toshiba CD recover but the error persists, with regular driver display and the actual machine crashed.

Since the reformat, I reinstalled the display drivers, and the problem persists.

I downloaded the drivers from this site and the problem is still there

You know a possible fix or solution to this problem? I am a competent enough and user of computer knowledge, so do not be afraid of getting technical in your response.

    Thank you

    Hello

This problem occur immediately after the operating system starts or after several usage time?
If this issue occurs after a several time of use, so it could be an overheating problem.
In this case, you should check the cooling modules. Check if the fans are working properly.
Try to clean it with the vacuum cleaner.

If this doesn t solve the problem if you maybe there is something wrong with the graphics card and you will need to contact Toshiba service for assistance.

  • Version of Windows Home on Equium A60 Recovery disk

    Hello

I have an Equium A60 and had no problems with it overheating apartment which was resolved by changing the thermal paste on the processor (that i could tell there was little).
But as other people have noticed that we're slowing down and re - install, it's ok, something to do when im bored, but I hate all the bundled application that comes on the recovery disk.

I have a downloaded version of any version of windows home but the COA serial key does not work with any of those I have and I don't want an illegal version of windows.

Please could someone tell me what version of home, I need for the COA serial key work with.

    I tried:

    -Retail
    -OEM
    -Corporate?
    -VLM

What should I use the legal license key.

    Thank you
    Stuart

    Hello

The OS of windows on the recovery CD is a (already active) OEM version.
You cannot use a key of the OEM version on another Windows operating system.
If you want to install the new Windows OS on your laptop, so you must use an original Microsoft Windows form the original CD.

But I do not understand why you want to install a new Windows OS without the application of Toshiba. Without this software, you can use all the features of the laptop.
All the features of the laptop needs to other tools and utilities.

Of course, the laptop needs a little more to start all applications at the beginning but if you don't want to use it, you can remove it from the BONE in the control panel.

  • Equium A60-692: sudden failure

I have an equium A60-692, a little more than 9 months. For the past few weeks the computer just turned off while I'm working, especially watching a dvd. I removed the battery and restarted and worked normally. Is something wrong with the battery or the computer uses not common but the passage to the battery?

    Any help would be appreciated.
    David.

    HI David,

There are two possible reasons for your problem,

1: the laptop may be overheating leading to the power off. Normally, it is clearly the fan increased before the laptop closed.

If this is the case try any dust/debris from your cooling fans with a compensation vacuum hose.

2: your power system could suffer an intermittent contact of your power connector on your laptop, which causes the phone switch to battery power, even if the power supply is connected. Usually, this will require a power-stop/restart to restore normal operation. If this is the case, you will notice the low battery alarm.

At 9 months, it is likely that dust/debris is your culprit so I would check that first.

If you suspect your power connector then you should always be covered by your warranty even if you have to convince your repairman is not due to 'normal' wear

  • Equium A60 - DVD player does not read the data disks

    Hello

I'm having a problem with my DVD drive on my laptop Toshiba Equium A60. The DVD drive (Pioneer DVD - RW DVR-K13A) will play store bought movies etc. without problem. He will also read a blank DVD when you put it in the drive, but once the information/data are on the disc, it won t detect the drive.

I'm not really good with computer so any help would be grateful. The computer used for any play he stopped just do a few months back.

    Many thanks, Phil

    Hello Phil

It is not easy to find explanations for these issues. What you can try is to create own data CD and check if the drive can read. I recommend buying a blank DVD-R from TDK. Over the past 7 years I never had no problem read/write TDK media.

Media that cannot be read properly? Is - this DVD-R, DVD - RW, DVD + R or a DVD + RW?
    Please give us more information.

  • Equium A60 has recently started to overheat

My Equium A60 has recently begun more heating really bad. It's at the stage where I can not install windows XP on it without him turning off during the installation of precession.

Anyone know what could cause it to fire so quickly?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

Especially the laptop overheats because the cooling module doesn t cool unique pieces in the right way.
Fans do not twist full implementation because of the dust and debris inside the laptop.
After a long time working, it s advisable to clean the cooling modules.

    How?
Well, the simplest method is a use of the vacuum cleaner. But be careful

If it helps the laptop must be checked by a technician.
The technician can renew the thermal paste between the CPU and the cooling module.
Important to take heat from the CPU thermal paste.

Last but not least do not forget that there is enough free space around the laptop.
The free space is important for air circulation correctly

  • "A" key does not work on Equium A60

    Hello

I bought my Equium A60 for more than a year.

I cleaned the keyboard about a month ago and now my key will not work properly!

I had jumped off the top plastic part off and blew out the dirt and the thing below rubber came out! It normally covers the sensor, it a little attached to it and presses down on it, so that's what makes the letter arrived on the screen! I put on top of the sensor and covered with plastic bits, but it won't work unless I press and press about 60 times! This is not very practical when you try to type fast!

Could someone help me please! I don't know what to do.

And A is that you use a lot, so I can't avoid it!
Its only the key has, so I don't really want to buy a whole new keyboard, although I would do it as a last resort a little to solve this problem. But even in this case, the rubber part does not come with keyboards? !! I would have thought that isn't that high woth plastic letters on? Will it get a technician, paste it on?

    Help, please!

    Hi nicola,.

I can't give you precisely answer how to solve your problem.
It seems that you will need a full keyboard.
As far as I know it is possible to also buy only the key caps, but I do not think that a replacement of the key CAP will help you.
In my opinion, you should ask the Toshiba service partner in your country. Maybe the technician may be able to deal with this issue without replacement of keyboard.
If this isn't the case, then I guess you need a new keyboard. Don't be afraid, that's not very expensive.
But as I said at the beginning to seek advice before you buy and replace something.

  • Satellite A200 overheating issues

I got my A200 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 x 160 GB in Raid 0, 512 MB ATI Mobility HD2600, 2 GB DDR2 667 around the Christmas period in 2007, since I bought it I had a major problem that has never been corrected under my warranty. Laptop overheating, overheating all playing games, when copying large files or after a few hours of heavy use. I had the graphics card and card mother, or even replaced the cpu, graphics card twice. now I'm no longer under warranty, and the problem starts again. I can't run without it going down.

My options: take it back to harvey norman and try to get them to fix it again
Call toshiba and get them to maintenance for me (they're going to clean the dust out of her charge me two hundred and it will start to play a month later)
by the post here and hope that some toshiba tech can explain a possible bios fan problem, or how to clean myself.

If I don't get help, I think I'll try to get the laptop all replaced by toshiba - see if they'd pay the difference, because they sold me a product defective, reports on this issue are very common online without a solution - they want your using the wrong or something but im drivers everything works the out of the box and it has the same problem.

Ive tried everything, keeping the computer about 6 inches on the desktop but the internal component always on a fire of disks formatted. A friend of mine has a similar problem with another company and they replaced the laptop everything and updated. I hope toshiba can offer me something similar though I am no longer under warranty. However, the components I had replaced 6 months ago problably are still.

so if anyone has a solution or if toshiba could get it please contact me it would be much appreciated.

    Hello

Disassembly manuals are not available on the pages of Toshiba. I guess that they are not for public use. If you need instructions on how then you glasses a bit.
    Maybe you could be successful.

One of my friends has one of the portable Sat A200 and it works without problems.
    It has installed Win XP.
I remember that after installing Win XP, you will need to update the BIOS to the version of Win XP. There are two different versions of BIOS. XP and Vista.

My laptop (Toshiba not a) overheated in the past because of the clogged vents. Circulate fresh air could not t and the internal temperature has arisen at a critical level. I cleaned the vents of the dust and debris with the can of compressed air.
    This helped a little.

But after some time the problem happened again the next local laptop technician, I visited and he disassembled the laptop in order to renew the layer of fat that was placed between the CPU and the cooling fans.
He said that this is necessary if the heat created by the CPU would not drain properly.

After that, my laptop is ok.
Of course I have enough free space around the laptop because it is very important to the circulation air properly!
